Abstract

Sappho has always been regarded as one of the greatest lyric poets of ancient Greece. Her famous poem Fragment 31 V., also known as the “Ode to Jealousy”, accurately describes the profound emotional reaction triggered by the sight of her beloved. The poet’s precise description of each sign and symptom triggered by this arousal makes Sappho 31 V., to the best of our knowledge, the first analytical description of the acute stress response, the so-called “fight-or-flight” response, in human history. Here, Fragment 31 V. is re-read from a medical point of view, correlating the ancient Greek lyric text, the corresponding medical terms, and the underlying catecholamine mechanism of action.

Abstract

The gymnosperms are a taxon of plants that release large amounts of pollen. Some genera of this group are specifically studied because their pollen is known to be the cause of respiratory diseases. The medical interest in allergenic bioaerosol has led to the need for daily aerobiological monitoring. The technique applied involves the use of an instrument that aspirates a volume of air corresponding to human inhalation and the identification under the light microscope of the allergenic bio-particulate present. Morphology alone does not allow to distinguish the non-saccate pollen thus they are attributed to a single category, i.e., Cupressaceae-Taxaceae, without distinction between genera belonging to the different families. This research represents an attempt to overcome the difficulties in the recognition of non-saccate gymnosperm pollen. Twenty-one species belonging to the Araucariaceae, Cupressaceae, and Taxaceae families were selected in Perugia (Umbria, central Italy). The most common species and other less widespread ones were selected, all characterized by non-saccate pollen. The results obtained allowed us to identify four morphologies: aperturoidate, areolate-papillate, areolate-porate, and porate. This study provides further knowledge regarding the morphological characteristics of these pollen grains, in order to overcome the general definition of inaperturates attributed to the pollen of some gymnosperms. Abstract

BACKGROUND: Grass pollen is a worldwide cause of respiratory allergy. Identifying the causative species is essential, for example for choosing the appropriate immunotherapy, because not all grass allergens are totally cross-reacting, and the pollen calendars provide only a gross estimate. Phenologic analyses allow identification of the pollen release for each individual grass. OBJECTIVES: To assess, using phenologic analyses, the true flowering periods of grasses and to compare the data with the standard pollen calendar. METHODS: Phenologic analyses were performed of the following grasses: black grass, sweet vernal grass, common wild oat, barren brome, cocksfoot, tall fescue, Yorkshire fog, ryegrass, Timothy grass, bulbous meadow-grass, Kentucky bluegrass, and Bermuda grass. Sampling was performed every 10 days, starting in April 2009, at 50 stations distributed across Italy. The flowering phase was assessed using a stereomicroscopy-based method for the detection of spreading stamens. The official pollen calendar was used for comparison. RESULTS: Relevant differences were found between grass pollen count and effective flowering of the grass species. Only some species contributed to the pollen peak, and a relevant pollen load for other species was also present out of the peak. Important Pooideae, such as Timothy grass, were not present during the pollen peak in northern and central Italy, and the same occurred with Bermuda grass. CONCLUSIONS: The various species of grasses release their pollen grains at different times during the pollen season, and this information is missing with pollen calendars. This may have a relevant effect on the choice of an appropriate immunotherapy.

Abstract

Background Depression is a frequently observed and disabling condition in primary care, mainly treated by Primary Care Physicians with antidepressant drugs. Psychological interventions are recommended as first-line treatment by the most authoritative international guidelines but few evidences are available on their efficacy and effectiveness for mild depression. Methods/Design This multi-center randomized controlled trial was conducted in 9 Italian centres with the aim to compare the efficacy of Inter-Personal Counseling, a brief structured psychological intervention, to that of Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors. Patients with depressive symptoms referred by Primary Care Physicians to psychiatric consultation-liaison services were eligible for the study if they met the DSM-IV criteria for major depression, had a score ≥13 on the 21-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale, and were at their first or second depressive episode. The primary outcome was remission of depressive symptoms at 2-months, defined as a HDRS score ≤ 7. Secondary outcome measures were improvement in global functioning and recurrence of depressive symptoms at 12-months. Patients who did not respond to Inter-Personal Counseling or Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors at 2-months received augmentation with the other treatment. Discussion This trial addresses some of the shortcomings of existing trials targeting major depression in primary care by evaluating the comparative efficacy of a brief psychological intervention that could be easily disseminated, by including a sample of patients with mild/moderate depression and by using different outcome measures. Abstract

The Asian chestnut gall waspDryocosmus kuriphilus(Hymenoptera: Cynipidae) is one of the most serious pests of chestnut trees worldwide. Wasps lay eggs into chestnut buds from mid Jane to late July, depending on latitude, and galls develop the following spring on new vegetation, reducing photosynthesis and nut production. We observed that modification of tissues surroundingD. kuriphiluseggs, which differentiate to form the larval chamber, started approximately 1 month after oviposition, shortly after eggs hatch. The larval chambers continued to increase slightly in size throughout the autumn months until January. After that, a period of stagnation, which corresponds to the plant's dormancy, occurred, followed by rapid growth from March to May, during the period from bud swelling to bud break. Galls continued to grow during the leaf expansion after bud break and stopped when plant organs achieved their final size. Our results have implications for the management of the pest, providing a better understanding of the critical time periods for the effective control. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In wheat and other grain species, variations in kernel size are related to variations in ovary size. It is not known whether environmental factors that are known to affect kernel size may also affect ovary size, thus maintaining the kernel size‐ovary size correlation. Additionally, it is not known whether variations in ovary size in wheat depend on cell size, cell number or both. In this study, ovary size was measured with a stereomicroscope, and ovary wall cell size and number were measured in equatorial cross‐sectional areas of the ovary wall in two common wheat cultivars with different kernel size: Bora (large kernels) and Bologna (small kernels). Plants were grown at low and high N fertilization (0 and 240 kg ha−1) with normal density (450 seeds m−2), and at low and high plant density (200 and 650 plants m−2) with normal fertilization (160 kg N ha−1). The variation in ovary wall size across all data pooled (i.e., including two genotypes, two N and two density treatments, and including within treatment variations), was related to cell number and not to the cell size, which did not vary significantly with cultivar and field practices. With increasing ovule size, ovary wall size increased less than proportionally, thus the ovule/ovary ratio increased. Cell size in the ovary wall showed an upper limit across all treatments, which decreased with increasing cell number. These findings may be useful for breeding programs and field practices aimed at increasing kernel size and yield.
