In cities worldwide, cycling is increasingly upgraded with smart technology and is included in smart cities' visions and projects. This process has not been problematized in public discourse, as smart innovation is seen as a potential booster of the known benefits of cycling. Drawing on critical literatures on smart cities, smart mobility, and degrowth and using the case studies of Copenhagen and Amsterdam, the article opens up a more critical conversation on the subject, discussing the role of "techno-solutionism," technology push, and pro-innovation bias in the process of "smartification" of cycling. Abstract Background Renewable energy (RE) systems are becoming a central component of the clean energy transition and are often seen as the way to combat climate change. Their establishment requires innovation, investments, and deployment policies for emerging technologies. Governments around the world are increasingly trying to create and support the energy-tech and climate-tech innovation ecosystems in their attempt to promote an innovation-supporting environment. However, energy innovation policies are often aligned with the dichotomous notion of technology-push and market-pull and overlook the social, political, and cultural contexts in which RE innovative technologies are embedded, and the multiple actors and interactions that are associated with their development. By combining the Middle-Out Perspective (MOP) and innovation literature, this paper argues that an innovation ecosystem could be weaved from the middle-out. Methods This paper analyzes the case of ‘Eilat-Eilot Renewable Energy Initiative’ and Israel’s RE innovation ecosystem creation through the lens of the MOP and applies a socio-technical interpretation to the push and pull terminology. Process tracing methodology was applied to trace a sequence of events to determine whether an actor was pushed or pulled, the formation of a network of actors, and its evolvement to an energy innovation ecosystem from the middle-out. Data for the analysis were collected from interviews, policy papers, media articles, and Governmental decisions. Results The analysis demonstrates how middle actors push the implementation of RE technologies in Israel, and at the same time pull decision-makers and other middle actors to promote the low carbon transition. The push and pull forces and the interactions between actors lead to the engagement of new stakeholders in the innovation network, the adoption of more ambitious RE targets and supporting policies, and the creation of an effective RE innovation ecosystem. Conclusions This paper uses the MOP as an analytical framework and the push and pull terminology to demonstrate how a middle actor initiates and develops an actor-network by interacting with other actors. As this network broadens, it forms an effective innovation ecosystem. A network of actors has the potential to lead change, provide innovative ideas, initiate research, encourage investments, create employment possibilities, and promote regional sustainable development.

Strategic transformation is the primary reason why digitalization, artificial intelligence and related changes are on the top of most corporate agendas. Currently, many firms have completed the stage of strategy formulation for their digital transformation and are in the phase of strategy implementation. Here, many firms face major difficulties, which often result from an emphasis on technology issues at the expense of market-related issues. Following the innovation-based view and a conceptual framework of technology push and market pull effects, this conceptual paper presents important building blocks of successful digital transformation. On this basis, it illustrates the typical focus of most firms at present and highlights the limitations of these approaches. To overcome these limitations, several implementation steps are presented. As such, this paper contributes to research into digital transformation and artificial intelligence as well as into managing strategic renewal in light of technological change. Many innovations result from firms following theories and models of innovation such as disruptive innovation, blue ocean innovation, etc. Yet, there are many other innovations that are not developed through these models and rather stem from technological pushes and research and development efforts. The commercial success of these innovations is contingent upon existence of a good fit between the technological innovation and the accompanying business model. To date, this fit has been mostly sought through trials and errors. In this paper, we develop a framework for analytically choosing and aligning two important components of the business model — value proposition and target market — to fit the technological innovations. Though innovation strategy and organizational learning have been credited to impact on product innovation performance, they have been rarely considered in a single model simultaneously. Thus, the main aim of the paper is to investigate the extent of impact of innovation strategy on organizational learning and product innovation performance. A structural equation modelling analysis was performed on the survey data collected from Ethiopian textile and leather product manufacturing firms. The result reveals that innovation strategy is positively related to product innovation performance. Further, firm size and ownership type moderate the effect of innovation strategy on product innovation performance.

Developing a technology push product that brings real novelty to the market is difficult, risky and costly. This case study analyzes success factors defined by the literature. True industrial cases, representing Finnish ICT firms in their early phase after a successful market entry, were researched for the success factor analysis. The whole set of the previously introduced success factors were variably supported, and three new factors arose. Because the technology pushed development processes are risky with high failure rates, the validated success factors are valuable knowledge for the developments intensive firm’s management.

Because technology pushed product development projects are risky and failure rates are high, the success factors are valuable knowledge for the management of development-intensive firms. This paper provides a comparison of success factor weighting between hardware and software product development projects in the ICT industry improving existing success factor research. We analyze qualitatively interview data from nine intentionally selected start-up firms and identify which success factors were clearly supported by HW and SW firms, and in which area different types of firms could benchmark each other. This study develops a moderation model to examine the role of a proactive environmental strategy on eco-innovation. Drawing upon the perspectives of contingency theory, this study argues that the impacts of sustainability strategy on eco-innovation depend on market demand, innovation intensity and government subsidy. The sample used to test the hypotheses is obtained from the Community Innovation Survey in Taiwan. A total of 2955 manufacturing firms are included in the final sample. A logit moderating regression is adopted to analyze the models. The results reveal that market demand and government subsidy positively moderate the relationship between environmental strategy and eco-innovation. Specifically, firms are more likely to adopt a proactive environmental strategy to improve eco-innovation under high levels of market demand and government subsidy. Furthermore, the results indicate that innovation intensity affects the effect of environmental strategy on eco-innovation, but the direction of the influence varies with different categories of eco-innovation. Technology push and market pull innovation strategies are playing an important role for the effective management of ideas, technologies, and trends. The coexistence of these two approaches led to many debates and the focus switched several times from putting more effort into technology push aspects to fostering market pull approaches in the last decades. Still, there is no in-depth exploration of the interface of technology push and market pull and only few conceptual models are dealing with the connection between technology push and market pull in particular. Therefore, this study puts an exploratory focus on the innovation management processes of a global outdoor manufacturer with a special emphasis on the interface between technology push and market pull. From the case findings and our literature we conceptualise a non-linear innovation model that systematically integrates market pull and technology push activities. The model was tested for its practical applicability by reflecting it against the case company's organisational capabilities. Further research implications are discussed as well as implications for the management of the innovation process in practice, which highlights especially the importance of an innovation competence team.
