An instructive comparison can be drawn between Jacques Ellul's 1936 Esprit article portraying "Fascism as Liberalism's Child" and Georges Bataille's 1938 lecture on "The Sacred Sociology of Today's World". Both rely on Durkheim's sociology in assuming modernity's amorphousness, leaving passive masses of atomized individuals susceptible to mobilization into totalized entities by charismatic leadership. Bataille welcomes the postwar intensification of social aggregates but criticizes their militant, militaristic regimentation as not violent and sacred enough, whereas for Ellul, the resurgent social sacred (whether orgiastic or dictatorial), as the active mass, is the enemy of the free person as the sole meaningful whole. As China has risen as an advanced technological society, a new type of Orientalism—Digital Orientalism—has likewise emerged. Using historical materialism, this paper details these developments, including China's change from a civilization-state to modern nation-state and its transition from a technical state to an advanced technological society, closing the technology gap that had left it vulnerable to foreign aggression and continued forms of international dominance and hegemony. It reviews and develops theories associated with technological societies, and how these relate to technophobia generally and the rise of Sino(techno)phobia specifically. It then theorizes three distinct but overlapping trends or themes in Orientalist depictions of China over the past two centuries: 1) 'classical' Orientalism, first theorized by Edward Said; 2) 'Sinological Orientalism,' described by Daniel Vukovich; and now 3), 'Digital Orientalism,' which was first introduced by Maximilian Mayer. This paper develops analyses associated primarily with the third theme, investigating contemporary developments in the context of China as a rising power and how scholars and other nations have responded in turn. It argues that China appears to have surpassed others now as a technological society, including the US, with China's response to COVID-19 as a clear example, and with clear implications for China's national advancement and global position vis-à-vis the United States particularly. FETISHISM (Religion) , *CRITICAL theory , *INTERNET , *AMERICAN fiction - Abstract
According to Jean Baudrillard, in a totally functional world people become irrational and subjective, given to projecting their fantasies of power into the efficiency of the system, a state of 'spectacular alienation'. I argue that Americans as a society have accommodated themselves to such a system to the detriment of their ability to make sense in their public discourse. Baudrillard finds pathology in the system of objects as it determines social relations. In one symptom, people may obsess over a fetish object. For American society, the magical mechanical object is the gun. I show evidence for this weapons fetish in American fiction, cinema, television and serious journalism. Then, using Baudrillard and other analysts, I show how the American obsession with the superior functionality of weapons joins its myth of exceptionality and preference for simulation over reality to create a profound American dream state that protects a very deep sleep. The evolution of technology has changed society's thinking, employers' claims and uncertainty among those who cannot adapt to the new. The new jobs that have emerged in recent years have put more emphasis on creativity and science, which is a disadvantage for people with a phlegmatic temperament, inclined to routine, meticulous tasks. What solution would it be in the future for employers to emphasize on relational, creative and learning abilities, then the mathematical and logical ones be taken by those inclined towards them. In the future, due to the technology of workplaces, people will have to learn to adapt to the new, to know better about them and the resources they have in order to find the right jobs for them. A proposed solution for employability would be the creation of prototypes for each job. There are still trades in which people cannot be replaced by robots, and they lack emotions, feelings, creativity, reason. These are specific human qualities and jobs that assume such qualities will be in the future: psychologist, nanny, actor, singer, make-up artist, physician, social worker. With all the advantages that IA can bring, emotional intelligence, how to act and react in various situations, the sense of humor, creativity, spontaneity, expressivity, cognitive flexibility cannot be taken over or replaced by robots. The question arises: what jobs could be created in the future so that the unemployment rate remains low and the psychological comfort of the people raised? The students from the University POLITECHNICA Bucharest will create a strategy in which they will answer this question and propose new jobs for the future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective. The aim of this study is to consider the new challenges facing psychological science today, the chief of which are the modern transitive society and network virtual space. Design. The study consisted of two series of tests. In the first part, 150 students (ages 19-21; 80 female, 70 male) were tested on their structure of social identity and attitudes toward people of both their own and different cultures, with the questionnaires “Structure of social identity,” “Level of personal anxiety,” and “Attitude to native and alien cultures.” In the second part, 100 people were divided into two groups, one of persons 18 to 25 years old, and another of persons 30 to 45 years old. They were asked about their attitudes toward the new technological space with the questionnaire “Attitude to new technological space,” which was developed by the author in 2017. Results. The study showed that transitional space puts people in a difficult life situation, which increases their anxiety and reduces their socialization potential, especially in a multicultural space. The data showed that under these conditions, the family turns out to be the most important group for most people, regardless of their ages or where they live. Conclusion. A transitive society is determined by its variability, and the uncertainty and multiplicity of social and personal spaces and contexts. This situation raises the status of the family in the structure of sociocultural identity. The experience of working with new technologies is the main determinant of people having a positive attitude toward them.

This article investigates digital Bildung from the teachers’ perspectives by analysing how the teachers reflect on the phenomenon. To understand the teachers’ perspectives on digital Bildung, this article introduces a theoretical framework constructed from three analytic perspectives: inner process, Self-Bildung and democracy. These perspectives represent allsides of Bildung by Wilhelm von Humboldt with a democratic understanding from Dewey. Based on this framework, the article outlines a paradox in education between the increasing focus on the use of digital tools and the blurry, unclearcommunication regarding schools’ ‘digital mandate’.

UNITED States politics & government, 2017-2021 ,AMERICAN politicians ,LIBERALS - Abstract
This article applies Daniel Boorstin's notion of the pseudo-event to the ascendency of President Donald Trump. Boorstin defines the pseudo-event as an event staged to call attention to itself, a phenomenon made possible by the graphic revolution. As early as 1961, Boorstin recognized this phenomenon in the areas of travel, news and politics. Concerning the latter, the hero, a person once recognized for his achievements, has been replaced by the celebrity, a person known for his well-knownness. While Davy Crockett was a precursor of the American celebrity politician, P. T. Barnum and Edward Bernays were practitioners of the pseudo-event par excellence. Donald Trump, however, exemplifies the human pseudo-event in a most tragic way because his persona is emblematic of what some observers now perceive as the fly-in-the-ointment of American liberal democracy – the unrestrained autonomous self, something to which our original political commitments ensure us can be liberated from nature, time and place. In our quest to realize 'liberty' for ourselves, older and more localized ethical restraints had to be cast aside. Ironically, the crisis of liberalism resides in its great success. POLITICAL ecology ,VIOLENCE ,RELIGION & politics ,INDUSTRIALIZATION ,NATIONALISM - Abstract
A pioneer of political ecology, Bernard Charbonneau (1910-1996) viewed freedom and nature as jointly threatened by the "second nature" of technological society (whose critique by his friend Jacques Ellul owed much to him), defined by total mobilization as revealed in world wars as in industrial development. Its roots intertwine with those of the modern State made possible by the Christian distinction of the spiritual from the sacred violence inherent in religion and politics, returning unchecked in both guises. Charbonneau's thought thus provides an ecological counterpoint to René Girard's mimetic theory. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The evolution of international relations, the turbulence and acceleration of both integration and fragmentation of the International World Order lead to unexpected and unconventional forms and types of threats to national and international security. Some come from the technological development, some from the impact of technologies on our societies, some others from the rise of populism and identities, and last but not least, from our own minds and perceptions that are influenced dramatically by our preconceptions and easiness of the rational thinking. All these have a huge impact on the new threat assessment, on the security and defence of a nation. That is why such facts need to be explored, known and approached in a scientific and comprehensive manner in order to prevent strategic surprise in the mentioned areas and the emergence of new types of conflicts. Abstract: The main objective of this paper is to underline the difficulty of defining propaganda in a systematic and noncontroversial way. I will present a few definitions of this term, from the pejorative and widely spread one, to the theoretical explanations provided by prominent authors in the field, and I will argue that they have to face some serious objections. In the final section of the article I suggest that the causes of this difficult task have to do with the influence of the pejorative conception, with the overestimation of the role played by the propagandist, and with the insufficient attention given to the function of propaganda in the process of configuring the social identity of a community.

- Abstract
Man is a social and a personal being, but is also a spiritual one. He does not live concerning himself only with material or problems, but try to understands his own existences, and the existence of the world. One issue that affects his existence on all these levels is the problem of evil. The problem of evil is pervasive an is not easy to discern or to tackle it accordingly, thought one should not allow himself to think evil consists in the wrong structure of society. Evil lurks moreover in the soul of man, but his soul exists and moves in society. And it is associated with the problem of liberty. Evil and liberty belong together. The sociology of Jacques Ellul, his sociological work and his theological, offer some insights in the matter at hand. The evil can be named according to hum the technological system, or le système technicien. This paper offers some insight in Ellul's conceptions and adds some insights from other thinkers, so that it may become clearer what he means, and where the roots of this technological system or technological man lay. His views on technological society are true, and such things existence of explicit transhumanist theoretical positions, or the social changes that are imposed unto the societies today do attest his views. The socialization of technology and the technicalization of society have accelerated the speed, scope and scale of human liberation from nature. In our past technological society, ‘liberation from nature’ mainly referred to people's physical strength. An intelligent society, characterized by the wide application of the internet, big data and artificial intelligence (AI), will further liberate not only people's physical strength, but also their mental power, greatly changing social forms and social operation modes, as well as people themselves. In the application of technologies and the design and manufacture of equipment on which the intelligent society depends, a new tension is formed between instrumental rationality and value rationality. While promoting the liberation of human beings, intelligent society will also cause humans to be dominated and enslaved by AI, which will lead to human alienation. Intelligent society is more in pursuit of how the invested capital and technology can multiply in the process of accumulation and circulation; meanwhile, it will ignore the moral responsibilities of relevant parties, such as researchers, manufacturers and users. In the process of developing an intelligent society, instrumental rationality should be regulated by value rationality, thus promoting the liberation of human beings and eliminating their alienation. As capital appreciation occurs, the moral responsibilities of relevant parties should be clarified.

Artificial intelligence has marked a before and after in the history of computing, in technological evolution. However, this type of development is unreliable for people, since it puts at risk the use of confidential data and information to be used for other particular interests of companies. This paper evaluates the most salient aspects of artificial intelligence associated with new technologies and its impact on society during the pandemic period. Social needs in the period of social distancing, confinement and how a life of confinement is made acceptable with the use of technological tools are evaluated. A set of scientific publications, academic material, technical reviews are taken into account and it can be observed that new technologies are useful and necessary in the pandemic, however, it is not enough to cover human needs.

This is a study undertaken at the interface between behavior analysis, history, and social sciences. The aim was to present a historical interpretation of schooling as a cultural practice to produce certain types of aggregate products as schooled subjects in Western civilization’s modern and contemporary ages. We used concepts of the social sciences, history, and behavior analysis to interpret three canonical works in the field of history of education here assumed to be cultural cusps. We propose that schooling in the modern and contemporary ages shaped different ideal types of aggregate products as a result of successive alterations to the cultural system metacomponents: (a) the Catholic and erudite courtier of the upwardly mobile mercantile society of the sixteenth century; (b) the literate and citizen of the world of the emerging machine manufacturing society of the eighteenth century; (c) the ethical and pragmatic individual of the technological society in place in the twentieth century. Changes in shapes of ideal types of aggregate products along these centuries may be used as important variables to understand educational challenges now faced in the twenty-first century.

The role of Everyday Technology (ET) use is presented as subsidiary or neutral in policy for age- and dementia-friendly communities; and yet, research suggests that older people, especially those with dementia, experience increased challenges using ET in their everyday lives. Through the lens of micro-citizenship, the study aims to deepen the knowledge about how use of ET outside the home, including portable ETs, relates to participation in places visited within public space among people with dementia over time. Using a longitudinal study design, 35 people with dementia were recruited at baseline and followed over three years. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews using standardised questionnaires: the Participation in ACTivities and Places OUTside Home Questionnaire (ACT-OUT) and the Everyday Technology Use Questionnaire (ETUQ). Random intercept modelling and descriptive statistics were used to analyse the data. Throughout the three-year study, decreasing use of ET outside the home, including portable ETs, was associated with decreasing participation in places visited within public space, in a statistically significant way when controlling for age (F = 7.59, p = 0.01). The findings indicate that facilitating access and use of ET outside the home, among people with dementia, should be integral to promoting and maintaining participation in age- and dementia-friendly communities.

The object of discussion of this article is the analysis of the relationship between teaching work, fundamental rights and protection of personal data in the technological society, in order to reflect on the process of intensifying the use of digital technologies in education, in order to know possible violations to the fundamental rights of subjects. The investigation used the methodology of bibliographical and documental research based on a dialectical materialist approach from the following question: to what extent does the stimulated insertion of digital technologies in education violate the fundamental rights of individuals? Among the results, it can be seen that the intensified use of digital technologies has a negative impact on teaching work relationships, as well as on the subjects' rights to privacy. In conclusion, it is highlighted that, for the work relationships of these professionals not to be negatively impacted by the use of technologies and to overcome the lack of privacy and protect the personal data of individuals in the technological society, we can base ourselves on the Freirean strategy of awareness of teachers and students about the pedagogical work, in addition to the strategy of the paradigm of the City of Feenberg, whose challenge is the use of technologies to be appropriated in a dialogic way.

Population ageing ,Economic growth ,Psychology ,Technological society - Abstract
Inclusivity of design for an aging population will be one of the most critical problems to address in the near and far future. With advancing age comes new needs, goals, and unique issues – all of which may be ameliorated through well-designed systems and technologies. But what does it mean to be “well-designed”? In this chapter, the authors discuss the background research supporting design principles that take into account age-related changes in cognition, movement, and behavior. These are then applied in a worked example of a “car of the future,” partly constructed with current technologies, but also imagining near and far future advances. They conclude with a discussion of how to employ these principles in practice, both when designing new and cutting-edge technologies from the ground-up and revising systems and technologies already in place.

Bitcoin came into existence as a peer-to-peer payment system for use on online transactions. This achievement was the result of a shared vision about the future relationship between governments’ control and citizenry, and the collaborative work of the many who contributed to the development of the cryptographic field. This innovation and its underlying technology, the blockchain, have been at the root of a change of paradigm, as the joint use of blockchain and artificial intelligence (AI) seed the next technological revolution. However, as it is often the case, these revolutionary inventions have also been met with skepticism in the financial sector and society at large. Using the case of Bitcoin and the blockchain, this paper analyzes the intersection between the philosophy and technology underlying these innovations, and the outlook of a sector of society who fears these developments while others try to profit. In this chapter, we first look at the history of Bitcoin together with that of those behind it. We then review the mixed reception it obtained after coming to the market. We assess the innovations’ properties and confront these with the needs of a society eager to obtain further clarity and enjoy more transparency in matters of relevance to their participation in democratic processes.

In order to map out the German engagements with STS, this article draws some historical and conceptual connecting lines: first, the technological society, second, the sociology of everyday devices and third, the sociology of innovation. The historical developments of discussing the relation of science, technology and society in Germany will be used as the starting point. The reception of STS in Germany will be depicted in reference to these precursors and some peculiarities of the German debates will be addressed. The article roughly follows the institutionalisation of science and technology studies in Germany and highlights some intersections with STS from the early 1980s until today.

This article discusses the possible tensions between the way the school organizes itself in order to fulfillits role of cultural transmission and the increasing demands of the technological society, such as those competences requiredby the information technologies. It is argued that the present school organization is related to one mode of world presentationdifferent from that which grounds the technological innovations of the contemporary consumer culture. These two ways ofworld presentation to children involve different affective and cognitive processes. The aim of the empirical research conductedin a private school in Rio de Janeiro was to examine how students related their technological and school experiences. Themethodology consisted of a participant observation in a 3rd grade class of elementary school, complemented with interviews. The results showed four axes along which it is possible to characterize the shifts promoted by technology in the modesof subjectification: learning, concentration, time/space, and effort/pleasure. We conclude that the empowerment given tochildren, by the access to technology may become void. It is the role of educators to reflect about how this power can take acourse which helps children to make a more productive use of information technologies.
