Background: Antibiotic management of low-virulent implant-associated infections induced by Cutibacterium acnes may be compromised by multi-drug resistance development, side effects, and increased cost. Therefore, we sought to assess the effects of shock wave therapy against the above pathogen using an in vitro model of infection., Methods: We used a total of 120 roughened titanium alloy disks, simulating orthopedic biomaterials, to assess the results of radial extracorporeal shock wave therapy (rESWT) against C. acnes (ATCC 11827) biofilms relative to untreated control. In particular, we considered 1.6 to 2.5 Bar with a frequency ranging from 8-11 Hz and 95 to 143 impulses per disk to investigate the antibacterial effect of rESWT against C. acnes planktonic (free-floating) and biofilm forms., Results: Planktonic bacteria load diminished by 54% compared to untreated control after a 1.8-bar setting with a frequency of 8 Hz and 95 impulses was applied (median absorbance (MA) for intervention vs. control groups was 0.9245 (IQR= 0.888 to 0.104) vs. 0.7705 (IQR = 0.712 to 0.864), respectively, p = 0.001). Likewise, a statistically significant reduction in the amount of biofilm relative to untreated control was documented when the above setting was considered (MA for treatment vs biofilm control groups was 0.244 (IQR= 0.215-0.282) and 0.298 (IQR = 0.247-0.307), respectively, p = 0.033)., Conclusion: A 50% biofilm eradication was documented following application of low-pressure and low-frequency radial shock waves, so rESWT could be investigated as an adjuvant treatment to antibiotics, but it cannot be recommended as a standalone treatment against device-associated infections induced by C. ances., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflicts of interest.

Gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata) is a teleost of considerable economic importance in Southern European aquaculture. The aquaculture industry shows a growing interest in the application of genetic methods that can locate phenotype-genotype associations with high economic impact. Through selective breeding, the aquaculture industry can exploit this information to maximize the financial yield. Here, we present a Genome Wide Association Study (GWAS) of 112 samples belonging to seven different sea bream families collected from a Greek commercial aquaculture company. Through double digest Random Amplified DNA (ddRAD) Sequencing, we generated a per-sample genetic profile consisting of 2,258 high-quality Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs). These profiles were tested for association with four phenotypes of major financial importance: Fat, Weight, Tag Weight, and the Length to Width ratio. We applied two methods of association analysis. The first is the typical single-SNP to phenotype test, and the second is a feature selection (FS) method through two novel algorithms that are employed for the first time in aquaculture genomics and produce groups with multiple SNPs associated to a phenotype. In total, we identified 9 single SNPs and 6 groups of SNPs associated with weight-related phenotypes (Weight and Tag Weight), 2 groups associated with Fat, and 16 groups associated with the Length to Width ratio. Six identified loci (Chr4:23265532, Chr6:12617755, Chr:8:11613979, Chr13:1098152, Chr15:3260819, and Chr22:14483563) were present in genes associated with growth in other teleosts or even mammals, such as semaphorin-3A and neurotrophin-3. These loci are strong candidates for future studies that will help us unveil the genetic mechanisms underlying growth and improve the sea bream aquaculture productivity by providing genomic anchors for selection programs.

Background: The Mediterranean diet (MD) is associated with decreased risk of metabolic syndrome and gestational diabetes due to the anti-inflammatory and antioxidative properties of its components. The aim was to investigate the potential association of MD adherence (MDA) during pregnancy by mothers delivering prematurely, with intrauterine growth as expressed by neonates' anthropometry at birth and complications of prematurity. Participants and methods: This is a single-center, prospective, observational cohort study of 82 women who delivered preterm singletons at post conceptional age (PCA) ≤ 34 weeks and their live-born neonates. Maternal and neonatal demographic and clinical data were recorded. All mothers filled in a food frequency questionnaire, and the MDA score was calculated. Based on 50th centile of MD score, participants were classified into high-MDA and low-MDA groups. Results: The low-MDA mothers had significantly higher pregestational BMI and rates of overweight/obesity (odd ratios (OR) 3.5) and gestational hypertension/preeclampsia (OR 3.8). Neonates in the low-MDA group had significantly higher incidence of intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) (OR 3.3) and lower z-scores of birth weight and BMI. Regarding prematurity-related complications, the low MDA-group was more likely to develop necrotizing enterocolitis, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, and retinopathy of prematurity (OR 3.2, 1.3, and 1.6, respectively), while they were less likely to develop respiratory distress syndrome (OR 0.49), although the differences were not statistically significant. However, adjustment for confounders revealed MDA as a significant independent predictor of hypertension/preeclampsia, IUGR, birth weight z-score, necrotizing enterocolitis, and bronchopulmonary dysplasia. Conclusions: High MDA during pregnancy may favorably affect intrauterine growth and certain acute and chronic complications of prematurity as well as maternal hypertension/preeclampsia.

Background: Orthodox Christian believers fast abstaining from meat, eggs, dairy products or even fish and oil in certain days of the fasting period, three times a year., Aim: The present study aimed to investigate the impact of a 48-day fast before Easter in blood count parameters, coagulation and antioxidant status., Material and Methods: A total of 35 healthy volunteers, 19-66 years old, were included in the study. White blood cells (WBC), lymphocytes (Lymph), granulocytes (Gran), haemoglobin (Hb), hematocrit (Ht), red blood cells (RBC), mean erythrocyte volume (MCV), platelets (Plt), were measured. Blood coagulation parameters, such as PT, aPTT, fibrinogen concentration, factor VII activity were also determined, and INR (PTsample/PTcontrol) and aPTT ratio (aPTTsample/aPTTcontrol) were calculated. Total antioxidant capacity (TAC) was assayed., Results: Levels of all parameters remained within normal. By the end of the fasting period, lymphocytes and TAC levels were significantly increased (p = 0.011), whereas all the other parameters, except fibrinogen, were significantly decreased., Conclusion: Orthodox Christian fast impairs all haematological and coagulation parameters and seems to be beneficial in the body antioxidant protection.

Aim: In sick children who are unable to be weighed estimation of weight is often required, but the routinely used equations lack accuracy and precision. This study aimed to develop a novel equation (Children's European Estimator of Weight-CEEW) using measurements of mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) and other predictors in multinational groups of sick children in Europe., Methods: Weight estimation equations were developed in 2086 children from the UK, Greece and the Netherlands, using a combination of demographics, MUAC and height measurements. The final CEEW equations were compared against the performance of the European Resuscitation Council (ERC), Advanced Paediatric Life Support (APLS) and the Cattermole equations., Results: Two final CEEW equations were developed, incorporating measurements of age, gender and MUAC, with (CEEW1) or without (CEEW2) the inclusion of height. Both equations presented very high coefficients of determination (R 2 >96.5%), minimal mean prediction error and narrower limits of agreement than the comparator equations. 88% (CEEW1) and 77% (CEEW2) of weight estimates fell within 15% of measured body weight. These figures compared with less than 57%, 57% and 37% for the ERC, APLS and Cattermole equations respectively., Conclusion: The CEEW equations performed substantially better than other routinely used equations for weight estimation. The treatment of molasses wastewater, by a combined microalgae-activated sludge process, for the simultaneous organics and total nitrogen reduction, was examined. Further enhancement of the performance of the combined process was accomplished, by means of biofilm carriers or electrocoagulation. A LED light tube was immersed into the reactor tank aiming to enhance the growth of photosynthetic microalgae, while in a similar unit, biofilm carriers were added to the system, representing a moving bed bioreactor. Exposure of the activated sludge biocommunity to light source, resulted in the growth of microalgae and photoreactors exhibited higher removal rates of total nitrogen and nitrates. However, operation at longer times resulted in low effluent quality due to the presence of microalgae cells as a result of high growth rates, and potential light shading effect. Nevertheless, the moving bed system was more beneficial than the single photoreactor, as biofilm carriers provided a self cleaning capacity of the light source, reducing the effect of microalgae deposition. Advanced treatment of the biological effluents, by electrocoagulation, increased even more the process efficiency: the combined photobioreactor and electrocoagulation process resulted in about 78% COD removal and more than 35% total nitrogen removal in the effluent, where nitrates represented almost the single form of total nitrogen., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Purpose: Follistatin may affect lean and fat mass and be implicated in metabolic diseases. We aimed to elucidate physiological predictors of circulating follistatin variation in healthy young humans., Procedures: This was an observational, cross-sectional study with two additional prospective observational arms (circadian, seasonal sub-studies) and one prospective interventional arm (mixed meal sub-study). Healthy, young individuals of both sexes (n=122) were subjected to anthropometric and body composition measurements and their eating and exercise behavior profiles were assessed by validated questionnaires. Sub-groups were subjected to standardized meal ingestion (n=36), day-night rhythm (n=20) and seasonal variation (n=20) studies. Main outcome of the study were circulating follistatin levels., Results: At baseline follistatin levels were correlated with creatinine (r=0.24; p=0.01), creatine phosphokinase (rs=0.22; p=0.02), and with lean body mass (rs=0.19; p=0.04) and were higher in males than females (p=0.004) after adjustment for leptin, which was its major predictor. Follistatin levels showed a circadian (p<0.001), but not a seasonal, variation, and were also affected by the phase of menstrual cycle in females (p=0.034). Follistatin levels were not affected by dietary or exercise habits but levels increased after a standardized meal ingestion (250kcal) (p=0.002)., Conclusions: In healthy young individuals circulating follistatin levels are correlated with muscle mass. Objectives: Hamstrings grafts are commonly used in ACL reconstruction, however, the effect of graft harvesting on knee flexion strength has not been longitudinally evaluated in functional positions. We hypothesized that greater deficits in knee flexion strength exist in the prone compared to the seated position and these deficits remain as rehabilitation progresses., Design: Case series., Methods: Forty-two consecutive patients who underwent ACL reconstruction with a hamstrings graft were followed prospectively for 9 months. Isokinetic knee flexion strength at a slow and a fast speed were collected at 3, 4, 6, and 9 months in two different positions: conventional (seated) and functional (0° of hip flexion)., Results: Peak torque knee flexion deficits were higher in the prone position compared to the seated position by an average of 6.5% at 60°/s and 9.1% at 180°/s (p<0.001)., Conclusions: Measuring knee flexion strength in prone demonstrates higher deficits than in the conventional seated position. The ability of selected manganese peroxidase (MnP) yeast strains, isolated from the mixed liquor of an activated sludge bioreactor treating melanoidins wastewater, was investigated in this work, aiming to examine the degradation potential of melanoidins, in the presence or absence of nutrients. Ten yeast strains were initially isolated from the mixed liquor; four yeast strains (Y1, Y2, Y3 and Y4) were selected for further studies, based on their tolerance towards synthetic melanoidins (SMs) degradation and MnP activity onto solid agar medium. The Y1 strain exhibited almost 98% homology to Candida glabrata yeast, based on 28S rRNA identification studies. During experiments carried out using SM at 30 °C, the four isolated yeast cultures showed a noticeable organic matter reduction and decolorization capacity reaching up to 70% within 2-5 days. However, the corresponding yeast cultures grown in glucose peptone yeast extract medium using real melanoidin wastewater at 30°C showed lower organic matter and color removal capacity, reaching about 60% within 2-5 days. Nevertheless, it was found that the removal of real and synthetic melanoidins could be carried out by these strains under non-aseptic conditions, without requiring further addition of nutrients.

Background: Free radicals, as a product of cigarette smoke, are considered to have deleterious effects causing oxidative stress. Acute active smoking seems to be followed by transient leukocytosis and delayed increase in neutrophil activation. The aim of the present study was to investigate the oxidative status of smokers and passive non-smokers, as well as the impact that acute cigarette smoking has on hematological parameters., Methods: Thirty-two healthy volunteers, 16 active smokers (Group A) aged 20-23 years and 16 age-matched, non-smokers (Group B), 18 women and 14 men in total, participated voluntarily in the study. All subjects did not have any food, drink, or cigarette smoking for eight hours before the study. Each time, two active smokers and two non-smokers were exposed simultaneously for half an hour to the smoke of two cigarettes smoked consecutively by the smokers. Blood was drawn before and after the exposure to cigarette smoke. Whole blood was analyzed immediately for total blood count parameters and serum was stored in -70(◦)C until serum levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) and vitamin E (VitE), and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) were determined., Results: No statistical significant difference was observed in the values of white blood cells and their subpopulations between the two groups and within the same group before and after exposure to cigarette smoke. In the group of smokers, granulocyte/lymphocyte ratio increased significantly, MDA levels showed significant elevation and protective VitE serum levels decreased significantly, whereas TAC was reduced, but not significantly, after the exposure. In the group of passive, non-smokers the results of the blood count parameters, MDA and VitE were similar to Group A, and there was a significant decrease in TAC, as well. Between the two groups, only hematocrit values and MDA levels differed significantly before the exposure to smoke, and no other significant difference was detected before or after the exposure, between active and passive smokers., Conclusions: Acute exposure to cigarette smoking affects hematological indexes and oxidative stress biomarkers negatively, in both active and passive smokers, with similar results. The outcome seems to be even worse in passive smokers regarding oxidative stress and antioxidant protection markers. Elimination of cigarette smoking could prevent the adverse effects for smokers, as well as for healthy non-smokers in their vicinity. Hippokratia 2015; 19 (4): 293-297.

Background: The study aimed to test the hypothesis that computer-based calculation of malnutrition risk may enhance the ability to identify pediatric patients at malnutrition-related risk for an unfavorable outcome. The Pediatric Digital Scaled MAlnutrition Risk screening Tool (PeDiSMART), incorporating the World Health Organization (WHO) growth reference data and malnutrition-related parameters, was used., Materials and Methods: This was a prospective cohort study of 500 pediatric patients aged 1 month to 17 years. Upon admission, the PeDiSMART score was calculated and anthropometry was performed. Pediatric Yorkhill Malnutrition Score (PYMS), Screening Tool Risk on Nutritional Status and Growth (STRONGkids), and Screening Tool for the Assessment of Malnutrition in Pediatrics (STAMP) malnutrition screening tools were also applied. PeDiSMART's association with the clinical outcome measures (weight loss/nutrition support and hospitalization duration) was assessed and compared with the other screening tools., Results: The PeDiSMART score was inversely correlated with anthropometry and bioelectrical impedance phase angle (BIA PhA). The score's grading scale was based on BIA Pha quartiles. Weight loss/nutrition support during hospitalization was significantly independently associated with the malnutrition risk group allocation on admission, after controlling for anthropometric parameters and age. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis showed a sensitivity of 87% and a specificity of 75% and a significant area under the curve, which differed significantly from that of STRONGkids and STAMP. In the subgroups of patients with PeDiSMART-based risk allocation different from that based on the other tools, PeDiSMART allocation was more closely related to outcome measures., Conclusion: PeDiSMART, applicable to the full age range of patients hospitalized in pediatric departments, graded according to BIA PhA, and embeddable in medical electronic records, enhances efficacy and reproducibility in identifying pediatric patients at malnutrition-related risk for an unfavorable outcome. Background & Aims: Previous studies reported a wide range of estimated malnutrition prevalence (6-30%) in paediatric inpatients based on various anthropometric criteria. We performed anthropometry in hospitalised children and assessed the relationship between malnutrition and length of hospital stay (LOS) and complication rates., Methods: In a prospective multi-centre European study, 2567 patients aged 1 month to 18 years were assessed in 14 centres in 12 countries by standardised anthropometry within the first 24 h after admission. Body mass index (BMI) and height/length <-2 standard deviation scores (SDS, WHO reference) were related to LOS (primary outcome), frequency of gastrointestinal (diarrhoea and vomiting) and infectious complications (antibiotic use), weight change during stay (secondary outcomes) and quality of life., Results: A BMI <-2 SDS was present in 7.0% of the patients at hospital admission (range 4.0-9.3% across countries) with a higher prevalence in infants (10.8%) and toddlers aged 1-2 years (8.3%). A BMI <-2 to ≥-3 SDS (moderate malnutrition) and a BMI <-3 SDS (severe malnutrition) was associated with a 1.3 (CI95: 1.01, 1.55) and 1.6 (CI95: 1.27, 2.10) days longer LOS, respectively (p = 0.04 and p < 0.001). Reduced BMI <-2 SDS was also associated to lower quality of life, and more frequent occurrence of diarrhoea (22% vs 12%, p < 0.001) and vomiting (26% vs 14%, p < 0.001)., Conclusion: Disease associated malnutrition in hospitalised children in Europe is common and is associated with significantly prolonged LOS and increased complications, with possible major cost implications, and reduced quality of life. Context: The myokine irisin may increase energy expenditure and affect metabolism., Objective: The objective of the study was to elucidate predictors of irisin and study whether circulating irisin may have day-night rhythm in humans., Design: This was an observational, cross-sectional study with an additional 24-hour prospective observational arm (day-night rhythm substudy) and two prospective interventional arms (mixed meal substudy and exercise substudy)., Setting: The study was conducted at the Hellenic Military School of Medicine (Thessaloniki, Greece)., Patients and Interventions: One hundred twenty-two healthy, young individuals were subjected to anthropometric and body composition measurements, and their eating and exercise behavior profiles were assessed with validated questionnaires. Subgroups were subjected to day-night rhythm, standardized meal ingestion, and 30-minute aerobic exercise studies., Main Outcome Measures: Circulating irisin levels were measured., Results: Ιrisin levels were lower in males than females (P = .02) after adjustment for lean body mass, which was its major determinant. Irisin levels followed a day-night rhythm (P < .001) with peak at 9:00 pm. Irisin levels were increased at the end of exercise (84.1 ± 10.0 vs 105.8 ± 14.3 ng/mL; P < .001). Irisin levels were not affected by intake of a standardized meal and were not associated with caloric intake or diet quality., Conclusions: In healthy, young individuals, circulating irisin displays a day-night rhythm, is correlated with lean body mass, and increases acutely after exercise.

ACL tear is a major concern among athletes, coaches and sports scientists. More than taking the athlete away from training and competition, ACL tear is a risk factor for early-onset of knee osteoarthritis, and, therefore addressing strategies to avoid such injury is pertinent not only for competitive athletes, but for all physically active subjects. Imbalances in the prelanding myoelectric activity of the hamstrings and quadriceps muscles have been linked to ACL injuries. We investigated the effect of landing from different heights on prelanding myoelectric activity of the hamstrings and quadriceps muscles in recreational athletes. Thirty recreational athletes (15 male and 15 female) performed three bilateral drop jumps from two different heights; 20cm and 40cm while myoelectric activity of the vastus medialis, rectus femoris, biceps femoris and medial hamstrings were collected. When increasing the height of drop landing tasks prelanding normalized myoelectric activity of the quadriceps was increased by 15-20% but no significant changes were found for the hamstrings. Female athletes exhibited higher activity of the medial hamstrings compared to their male counterparts. We concluded that increasing the height of drop landing tasks is associated with increased myoelectric activity of the quadriceps but not the hamstrings in recreational athletes. These differences in muscle activity may be related to increased risk for ACL injury when the height is increased. Pear tree (Pyrus communis) is an important crop in Greece. In 2012, fruits of the pear cv. Kontoula were observed in commercial fields located in Tirnavos, Prefecture of Larrisa, Greece, with symptoms of well-defined brown angular margins and their grayish white centers in which a few pycnidia (about 180 × 150 μm) were produced within the spots. Pycnidia were dark, separate, and globe-shaped with an ostiole (opening at the apex) from which conidia (about 40 to 60 × 3 μm) were extruded, and erupted through the surface of the infected tissue. Conidia were produced on short conidiophores. They were clear, narrowly elongated to filiform, and several-celled. The pathogen was isolated on acidified-PDA (2.5 ml 85% lactic acid per liter of nutrient medium) and incubated at 23°C for 7 days. The pathogen was identified as Septoria pyricola Desm. based on morphological characteristics. Koch's postulates were completed in the laboratory by placing a 40-μl drop of suspension (4 × 10 5 conidia ml -1 of water) on a wounded area of healthy fruits of cv. Kontoula. Fruits were surface sterilized with dipping in 0.1% chlorine solution, allowed to dry in a laminar flow hood. There were 15 inoculated and 15 control fruits (similarly inoculated with sterile distilled water) in a randomized design. Fruits were covered with perforated polythene bags to maintain a high humidity necessary for infection and these bags were removed 48 h after inoculation and maintained at room temperature (23 ± 2°C). Lesion development was recorded daily for each fruit. Koch's postulates were satisfied after re-isolating the fungus from inoculated fruit that developed symptoms similar to those observed on fruits collected from fields. Symptoms of this disease were found in all pear orchards cultivating the cv. Kontoula located in Tyrnavos (a municipality in the Prefecture of Larissa). Symptoms of septoria leaf spot were also observed in the above pear orchards. In contrast, no symptom of septoria fruit spot and septoria leaf spot was observed in apple orchards of the above regions. To our knowledge, this is the first report of the occurrence of S. pyricola as causal agent of fruit spot of pears in Greece. Purpose: Several studies have suggested that drilling the femoral tunnel through an anteromedial arthroscopic portal during anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction allows more anatomic placement of the graft. However, no studies have investigated whether the anteromedial approach results in better outcomes compared to the traditional transtibial drilling approach when a hamstring autograft is used. The purpose of the present study is to investigate short-term functional and clinical outcome differences between male patients recovering from anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction with a hamstring autograft using the transtibial femoral tunnel drilling approach versus the anteromedial approach., Methods: Lysholm score, functional test and isokinetic data were collected at 3 and 6 months after surgery in 51 male patients who received a standardized rehabilitation in a large outpatient facility. Multivariate and univariate analyses of variance were used to assess group, time and interaction effects., Results: All outcomes except isokinetic knee flexion at 180°/s improved from 3 to 6 months for both groups (p ≤ 0.05). The anteromedial approach group had better Lysholm scores at 3 months (p ≤ 0.05) and better performance in the timed lateral movement functional tests at 3 and 6 months (p ≤ 0.05). No other comparisons were significant (n.s)., Conclusions: Both groups had comparable outcomes on most measures. The differences in the Lysholm score and lateral movement functional tests may suggest a quicker return of function and performance for the anteromedial approach group. Clinicians should take into consideration the surgical technique as they progress patients recovering from ACL reconstruction through the different phases of the rehabilitation protocol., Level of Evidence: Therapeutic study, Level II.

Aim: To assess the nutrition status of children with CP, applying WHO growth standards, to indentify feeding risk factors and to evaluate their impact on the growth of children with CP., Methods: In 42 paediatric patients (mean age 8.00 ± 4.00 years), anthropometry and food intake records were assessed. z-scores were calculated using WHO Anthro software. Intake to requirements ratio (I/R) was calculated, and patients were classified according to their feeding ability (PFA). Overall diet quality was assessed using the Diet Quality Index International (DQI-I)., Results: Based on WAz, 15 patients (38.1%) were undernourished. No association was found between I/R ratio and BMI z-score, while PFA and DQI-I displayed a significant correlation to both (p < 0.05). Diet Quality Index International was also correlated with macronutrient distribution (p < 0.05). Patients with CP were undernourished in a considerable proportion. Malnutrition in patients with CP is not associated with the intake of estimated energy requirements. Balanced modulation of several targets is one of the current strategies for the treatment of multi-factorial diseases. Based on the knowledge of inflammation mechanisms, it was inferred that the balanced inhibition of cyclooxygenase-1/cyclooxygenase-2/lipoxygenase might be a promising approach for treatment of such a multifactorial disease state as inflammation. Detection of fragments responsible for interaction with enzyme's binding site provides the basis for designing new molecules with increased affinity and selectivity. A new chemoinformatics approach was proposed and applied to create a fragment library that was used to design novel inhibitors of cycloxygenase-1/cycloxygenase-2/lipoxygenase enzymes. Potential binding sites were elucidated by docking. Synthesis of novel compounds, and the in vitro/in vivo biological testing confirmed the results of computational studies. Inappropriate food labeling and unwillingness of food companies to officially register their own gluten-free products in the Greek National Food Intolerance Database (NFID) result in a limited range of processed food products available for persons with celiac disease (CDP). The objective of the study was to evaluate the feasibility of developing a gluten-free food product database based on the assessment of the gluten content in processed foods available for CDP. Gluten was assessed in 41 processed food products available for CDP. Group A consisted of 26 products for CDP included in the NFID, and group B contained 15 food products for CDP not registered in the NFID but listed in the safe lists of the local Celiac Association (CA). High-sensitivity ω-gliadin enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used for analysis. Gluten was lower than 20 ppm in 37 of 41 analyzed products (90.2%): in 24 of 26 (92.3%) products in group A and in 13 of 15 (86.7%) products in group B (P = .61). No significant difference was found between the 2 groups regarding gluten content. No product in either group contained gluten in excess of 100 ppm. Most of the analyzed products included in the Greek NFID or listed in the lists of the local CA, even those not officially labeled "gluten free," can be safely consumed by CDP. The use of commercially available ω-gliadin ELISA is able to identify those products that contain inappropriate levels of gluten, making feasible it to develop an integrated gluten-free processed food database.

Studies in adults with rheumatoid arthritis reported low serum ghrelin that increased following anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF) infusion. Data on juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) are lacking. The aim of this pilot study was to explore serum ghrelin levels in patients with JIA and the possible association with anti-TNF treatment, disease activity, and nutritional status. Fifty-two patients with JIA (14/52 on anti-TNF treatment) were studied. Juvenile idiopathic arthritis was inactive in 3 of 14 anti-TNF-treated patients and in 11 of 38 non-anti-TNF-treated patients. The nutritional status, energy intake/requirements, appetite, and fasting serum ghrelin levels were assessed. Ghrelin control values were obtained from 50 individuals with minor illness matched for age, sex, and body mass index. Ghrelin levels in patients with JIA were significantly lower than in controls (P < .001, confidence interval [CI] = -101 to -331). Analysis according to anti-TNF treatment and disease activity showed that ghrelin levels were comparable to control values only in 3 patients with anti-TNF-induced remission. Ghrelin in non-anti-TNF-treated patients in remission was low. Multiple regression analysis showed that disease activity (P = .002, CI = -84.16 to -20.01) and anti-TNF treatment (P = .003, CI = -82.51 to -18.33) were significant independent predictors of ghrelin after adjusting for other potential confounders. Ghrelin did not correlate with nutritional status, energy balance, and appetite. Serum ghrelin is low in patients with JIA and is restored to values similar to those in controls following anti-TNF-induced remission. Our study provides evidence that TNF blockade is independently associated with serum ghrelin, which possibly contributes to anti-TNF-induced remission. Pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) is an important crop in Greece. In 2010, fruits of the pomegranate cv. Wonderful, in commercial fields located in the Prefecture of Komotini in eastern Greece, were observed to have symptoms of distinct dark brown spots. The waxy acervuli observed in infected tissue were subepidermal, typically with setae and simple, short, erect conidiophores. Conidia were hyaline, one celled, ovoid to oblong, slightly curved or dumbbell shaped, and 10 to 15 μm long and 5 to 7 μm wide. The pathogen was isolated on acidified potato dextrose agar (PDA) (2.5 ml of 85% lactic acid per liter of nutrient medium) and incubated at 23°C for 7 days. The pathogen was identified as Colletotrichum gloeosporiodes (Penz) Sacc. on the basis of morphological characteristics and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequence (100% identity to AJ301912, C. gloeosporioides species complex) (3) by CBS Fungal Biodiversity Centre, Identification Service, Utrecht, the Netherlands, (CG-1 isolate deposited in CBS Collection; Accession No. CBS 129372). Koch's postulates were completed in the laboratory by placing a 40-μl drop of suspension (4 × 10 5 conidia ml -1 of water) on a wounded area of healthy fruits of cv. Wonderful. Fruits were surface sterilized by dipping in 0.1% chlorine solution and allowed to dry in a laminar flow hood. There were 15 inoculated and 15 control fruits (similarly sprayed with sterile distilled water) in a randomized design. Fruits were covered with perforated polythene bags to maintain a high humidity necessary for infection that were removed 48 h after inoculation and the fruits were maintained at room temperature (23 ± 2°C). Lesion development was recorded daily for each fruit. Koch's postulates were satisfied after reisolating the fungus from inoculated fruit that developed symptoms similar to those observed on fruits collected from fields. To our knowledge, this is the first report of the occurrence of C. gloeosporioides as a causal agent of fruit spot of pomegranates in Greece. In spring 2010, plants of pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) cv. Wonderful with symptoms of crown rot were observed in the Prefecture of Xanthi, Thrace, Greece. Close examination of these plants revealed distinct symptoms of crown rots. Isolations from the lower margins of the necrotic area were made by plating tissues of approximately 3 mm on acidified (2.5 ml of 85% lactic acid per liter of nutrient medium to create a pH = 3.5 after autoclaving) potato dextrose agar. The plates were incubated at 23°C for 5 to 7 days, and consistent colonies with light yellow, leathery mycelia and abundant, black, solitary pycnidia of various sizes were observed. Hyphae were septate and conidia were hyaline, one-celled, and ellipsoid to fusiform (average 10.1 to 20.2 × 3.2 to 4.3 μm). The pathogen was identified as Pilidiella granati Saccardo (synonym Coniella granati (Saccardo) Petrak & Sydow (3)) based on mycelium and spore morphology and ribosomal ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 sequences, which were identical to GenBank No. FN908875. Koch's postulates were completed in the laboratory by inoculating 20 1-year-old plants of pomegranate cv. Wonderful. With a 7-mm-diameter cork borer, a wound was created in the middle of each collar by removing the bark. A 6-mm-diameter agar plug bearing mycelia and spores from a 15-day-old culture of P. granati was inserted into each wound. The wound was covered with petroleum jelly and wrapped with adhesive tape to prevent desiccation. Ten trees were inoculated with sterile potato dextrose agar plugs to serve as controls. All plants were incubated at 25°C for 10 days, at which time necrosis was observed. Koch's postulates were satisfied after reisolating the fungus from inoculated plants that developed symptoms similar to those observed in the field. Control plants produced no symptoms of disease. To our knowledge, this is the first report of P. granati from pomegranate plants with symptoms of crown rots in Greece. The role of predisposing factors such as herbicides and frost damage to infection by P. granati is unknown. In the spring of 2010, in commercial orchards located in the Prefecture of Pieria in northern Greece, wilted shoots of kiwifruit cv. Hayward were observed. Blighted shoots took on a distinct dark color. Isolations from the lower margins of the cankers were made by plating sodium-hypochlorite-treated shoot tissue sections of approximately 3 mm on acidified (2.5 ml of 85% lactic acid per liter of nutrient medium to create a pH = 3.5 after autoclaving) potato dextrose agar. Plates were incubated at 23°C for 5 days, and a fast-growing, mouse-gray colored fungus was consistently isolated from diseased stems. Identification of the pathogen was based on morphological characteristics and confirmed by using the four random amplified polymorphic DNA primers (K19 [CAC AGG CGG A], K20 [GTG TCG CGA G], R13 [GGA CGA CAA G], and R15 [GGA CAA CGA G], suggested by Ma et al. (2). This fungus formed darkly pigmented pycnidia (170 × 155 μm), while the conidia observed in these bodies were one-celled, hyaline, ellipsoidal to fusoid with distinctly truncate bases, and measured 10.9 to 21.55 × 3.25 to 10.10 μm. The pycnidia exuded conidia in white tendrils. Koch's postulates were completed in the laboratory by inoculating 20 segments (6 cm long and 1.5 to 2 cm in diameter) of 1-year-old woody shoots of kiwifruit cv. Hayward. Using a cork borer, a 7-mm-diameter wound was created in the middle of each shoot segment by removing the bark and a 6-mm-diameter agar plug bearing mycelia from a 15-day-old culture of B. dothidea was inserted into the wound. The wound was covered with petroleum jelly and wrapped with adhesive tape to prevent desiccation. Ten control segments were similarly wounded and inoculated with an agar disk without fungal mycelium. All inoculated and noninoculated shoot segments were incubated at 25°C in moist chambers, after which the resulting necrosis was recorded. Koch's postulates were satisfied after reisolating the fungus from inoculated shoots that developed symptoms similar to those observed on shoots collected from orchards. Although B. dothidea has been previously reported to cause dieback on kiwifruit in Japan (1), to our knowledge, this is the first report of the occurrence of B. dothidea on kiwifruit in Greece. This pathogen can cause a high level of shoot blights in diseased plants and presents a significant threat to the commercial kiwifruit production in Greece. References: (1) M. Kinugawa and T. Sato. In a typical linear data compression system the representation variables resulting from the coding operation are assumed totally reliable and therefore the solution in the mean-squared-error sense is an orthogonal projector to the so-called principal component subspace. When the representation variables are contaminated by additive noise which is uncorrelated with the signal, the problem is called noisy principal component analysis (NPCA) and the optimal MSE solution is not a trivial extension of PCA. We first show that the problem is not well defined unless we impose explicit or implicit constraints on either the coding or the decoding operator. Second, orthogonality is not a property of the optimal solution under most constraints. Third, the signal components may or may not be reconstructed depending on the noise level. As the noise power increases, we observe rank reduction in the optimal solution under most reasonable constraints. In these cases it appears that it is preferable to omit the smaller signal components rather than attempting to reconstruct them. This phenomenon has similarities with classical information theoretical results, notably the water-filling analogy, found in parallel additive Gaussian noise channels. Finally, we show that standard Hebbian-type PCA learning algorithms are not optimally robust to noise, and propose a new Hebbian-type learning algorithm which is optimally robust in the NPCA sense.
