Abstract

Recent studies have emphasized the connection between machine learning feature importance measures and total order sensitivity indices (total effects, henceforth). Feature correlations and the need to avoid unrestricted permutations make the estimation of these indices challenging. Additionally, there is no established theory or approach for non-Cartesian domains. We propose four alternative strategies for computing total effects that account for both dependent and constrained features. Our first approach involves a generalized winding stairs design combined with the Knothe-Rosenblatt transformation. Our second approach is a U-statistic estimator that combines the Jansen intuition with a weighting factor. The U-statistic framework allows the derivation of a central limit theorem for this estimator. However, this design is computationally intensive. Then, our third approach uses derangements to significantly reduce computational burden. We prove consistency and central limit theorems for these estimators as well. Our fourth approach is based on a nearest-neighbour intuition and it further reduces computational burden. We test these estimators through a series of increasingly complex computational experiments with features constrained on compact and connected domains (circle, simplex), non-compact and non-connected domains (Sierpinski gaskets), and conclude with an application to a realistic simulator.

Abstract

International audience; This paper reports the results of an international benchmark exercise on the measurement of fibre bed compaction behaviour. The aim was to identify aspects of the test method critical to obtain reliable results and to arrive at a recommended test procedure for fibre bed compaction measurements. A glass fibre 2/2 twill weave and a biaxial (±45°) glass fibre non-crimp fabric (NCF) were tested in dry and wet conditions. All participants used the same testing procedure but were allowed to use the testing frame, the fixture and sample geometry of their choice. The results showed a large scatter in the maximum compaction stress between participants at the given target thickness, with coefficients of variation ranging from 38 % to 58 %. Statistical analysis of data indicated that wetting of the specimen significantly affected the scatter in results for the woven fabric, but not for the NCF. This is related to the fibre mobility in the architectures in both fabrics. As isolating the effect of other test parameters on the results was not possible, no statistically significant effect of other test parameters could be proven. The high sensitivity of the recorded compaction pressure near the minimum specimen thickness to changes in specimen thickness suggests that small uncertainties in thickness can result in large variations in the maximum value of the compaction stress. Hence, it is suspected that the thickness measurement technique used may have an effect on the scatter.

Abstract

International audience; The plasma-based aerosol process developed for the direct coating of particles in gases with silicon oxide in a continuous chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process is presented. It is shownthat non-thermal plasma filaments induced in a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) at atmospheric pressure trigger post-DBD gas phase reactions. DBD operating conditions are first scanned to produce ozone and dinitrogen pentoxide. In the selected conditions, these plasma species react with gaseous tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) precursor downstream of the DBD. The gaseous intermediates then condense on the surface of nanoparticles and self-reactions lead to homogeneous solid SiOx coatings, with thickness from nanometer to micrometer. This confirms the interest of post-DBD injection of the organo-silicon precursor to achieve stable production of actives species with subsequent controlled thickness of SiOx coatings. SiOx coatings of spherical and agglomerated metal and metal oxide nanoparticles (Pt, CuO, TiO2) are achieved. In the selected DBD operating conditions, the thickness of homogeneous nanometer sized coatings of spherical nanoparticles depends on the reaction duration and on the precursor concentration. For agglomerates, operating conditions can be tuned to cover preferentially the interparticle contact zones between primary particles, shifting the sintering of platinum agglomerates to much higher temperatures than the usual sintering temperature. Potential applications for enhanced thermal stability and tunable photoactivity of coated agglomerates are presented.

Abstract

International audience; A compact, inexpensive and simple Dielectric Barrier Discharge (DBD) design is presented with related electro-thermal properties for the production of metal nanoparticles. Nanoparticle formation and growth mechanisms are depicted from size distributions and chemical analyses of particles collected just after the 70 kHz DBD in Nitrogen. At first, it is confirmed that the initial local vapor flux is produced from the spots of interaction between plasma filaments and different metal electrodes (Au, Ag, and Cu). Amorphous and crystalline pure metal primary nanoparticles with diameters below 5 nm are then produced by physical nucleation in expanding vapors jets. Finally, some small agglomerates with diameters still below 5 nm are also formed by ballistic agglomeration of a fraction of these primary particles. This happens at the end of the vapor jet expansion, as well as after the production during the transit between subsequent filaments in the DBD. The first local agglomeration step can be limited at reduced energy per filament by lowering the initial vapor flux in smaller gaps, while the second growth step depends on the transit time in the DBD. Hence, such "low" energy plasma filaments (up to a few tens of µJ) lower the initial vapor flux to control the agglomeration. DBD were thus successfully tested for the production of tailored nanoparticles with tunable size, controlled morphology of spherical agglomerates and the same composition as the metal electrode. The production per unit energy (mol.J-1) is related to both plasma and material properties. Besides, neglecting vapor and nanoparticles losses, the mass production rate (g s-1) depends on the input power related to the product of the energy controlling the production per filament times the number of filaments per second, for any given material. This non-thermal plasma process presents great potentialities for nano-technologies since it is performed at atmospheric pressure and can be used to reach size-dependent properties of nano-materials, without any gaseous precursor or solvent.

Abstract

Le but de cette étude était de tester la possibilité d'utiliser des mesures géoélectrique pour détecter et différencier des échantillons de racine ligneuses d'espèces différentes enracinés dans des remblais de digues. Une expérience de laboratoire a été exécutée pour décrire le signal électrique d'échantillons de racine fraichement coupés et enterré en fonction des espèces, de l'orientation et du nombre d'échantillons de racine et la nature des matériaux. Les mesures géoélectriques ont été exécutées à la surface du sol dans des conteneurs. D'abord, les propriétés électriques de trois types de matériaux (gravier, sable et limon) ont été caractérisées sans racines enterrées. Ensuite, les échantillons de racine ont été enterrés à une profondeur de 0.05 m avec des orientations différentes : horizontalement, de façon parallèle ou perpendiculaire à la ligne d'électrodes puis verticalement. Les spectres de conductivité complexes ont été observés dans la gamme de fréquence 22.9 mHz - 750 Hz. Les mesures sans racines enterrées ont été répétées après l'achèvement de toutes les mesures avec les racines. Dans la plupart des cas, la conductivité des échantillons de racine enterrés a augmenté la conductivité intégrale des matériaux. Cette tendance a été observée principalement dans le gravier et le sable. L'orientation parallèle a abouti à l'augmentation la plus significative de la partie réelle de la conductivité. La canalisation du flux de courant dans la racine semble être une explication correcte. Cette expérience en laboratoire ouvre la voie pour les mesures in situ. / The aim of this study was to test the possibility of using geoelectrical measurements to detect and differentiate different root samples of trees rooted in dikes. A laboratory experiment was performed to describe the electrical signal of buried freshly cut root samples according to tree species, root sample orientation and number and nature of earthfill materials. The geoelectrical measurements were performed at the soil surface in containers. First, the electrical properties of three soil materials (gravel, sand and silt) were characterized in containers without buried roots. In subsequent steps, the root samples were buried at a depth of 0.05 m with different orientations: horizontally and parallel or perpendicular to the electrode array, and vertically. The complex conductivity spectra were observed in the frequency range 22.9 mHz - 750 Hz. The measurements without buried roots were repeated after completing all the measurements with the roots. In most cases, the conductivity of buried root samples increased the integral conductivity of the ground. This trend was observed mainly in gravel and sand. The parallel orientation resulted in the most significant increase of the real part of conductivity. Channelling of the current flow in the root seems to be a reliable explanation. This laboratory experiment now opens the way for in-situ measurement.

Abstract

The ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) programme is directed towards physics input to critical elements of the ITER design and the preparation of ITER operation, as well as addressing physics issues for a future DEMO design. Since 2015, AUG is equipped with a new pair of 3-strap ICRF antennas, which were designed for a reduction of tungsten release during ICRF operation. As predicted, a factor two reduction on the ICRF-induced W plasma content could be achieved by the reduction of the sheath voltage at the antenna limiters via the compensation of the image currents of the central and side straps in the antenna frame. There are two main operational scenario lines in AUG. Experiments with low collisionality, which comprise current drive, ELM mitigation/suppression and fast ion physics, are mainly done with freshly boronized walls to reduce the tungsten influx at these high edge temperature conditions. Full ELM suppression and non-inductive operation up to a plasma current of I p = 0.8 MA could be obtained at low plasma density. Plasma exhaust is studied under conditions of high neutral divertor pressure and separatrix electron density, where a fresh boronization is not required. Substantial progress could be achieved for the understanding of the confinement degradation by strong D puffing and the improvement with nitrogen or carbon seeding. Inward/outward shifts of the electron density profile relative to the temperature profile effect the edge stability via the pressure profile changes and lead to improved/decreased pedestal performance. Seeding and D gas puffing are found to effect the core fueling via changes in a region of high density on the high field side (HFSHD). The integration of all above mentioned operational scenarios will be feasible and naturally obtained in a large device where the edge is more opaque for neutrals and higher plasma temperatures provide a lower collisionality. The combination of exhaust control with pellet fueling has been successfully demonstrated. High divertor enrichment values of nitrogen E N ⩾ 10 have been obtained during pellet injection, which is a prerequisite for the simultaneous achievement of good core plasma purity and high divertor radiation levels. Impurity accumulation observed in the all-metal AUG device caused by the strong neoclassical inward transport of tungsten in the pedestal is expected to be relieved by the higher neoclassical temperature screening in larger devices.

Abstract

The out-of-plane permeability of two glass fibre fabrics was measured by 26 institutions using silicone oil as a test fluid. Participants in this study were free to select the test procedure, specimen dimensions and data analysis method, provided that testing was carried out at three target fibre volume fractions, 46 %, 50 % and 54 %. While results showed a variability of two orders of magnitude between participants, most values were within a significantly narrower band. A majority of participants used 1D saturated test method. A few selected 1D unsaturated and 3D unsaturated flow method which gave very similar results. Focusing on analysis of data and results of 1D saturated flow measurements, results are not conclusive, but they are consistent with number of layers in a specimen, fibre volume fraction, injection pressure and sealing of specimen edges all having an effect on the measured permeability.
