Nos dirigimos a los docentes de todas las etapas educativas, desde Infantil y Primaria hasta la Universidad, y de cualquier ámbito del conocimiento, pues se incluye un amplio abanico de ejemplos de mapas conceptuales que tiene por objeto mostrar su poder como recurso educativo. Ofrecemos los elementos básicos que permiten una utilización más eficaz de esta herramienta en el aula y más acorde con los principios en los que se apoya, con la intención de distinguir un mapa conceptual de lo que no lo es. Para responder a este propósito se han organizado cuatro capítulos. En el primero se explica qué es un mapa conceptual, en qué principios se sustenta, cómo se construye y cómo se puede introducir al alumnado en su uso. En un segundo capítulo, se muestra su potencial como recurso instruccional, como instrumento de evaluación y como recurso para el análisis de la estructura conceptual del contenido. Como todo diagrama no es un mapa conceptual, se dedica un espacio, el tercer capítulo, a diferenciar los mapas conceptuales de otras representaciones. Finalmente, se presentan algunas reflexiones y sugerencias tendentes a favorecer un uso de este instrumento metacognitivo mucho más productivo, de modo que se exploran todas sus potencialidades. For some time now, the study of cognitive development has been far and away the most active discipline within developmental psychology. Although there would be much disagreement as to the exact proportion of papers published in develop­ mental journals that could be considered cognitive, 50% seems like a conservative estimate. Hence, a series of scholarly books devoted to work in cognitive devel­ opment is especially appropriate at this time. The Springer Series in Cognitive Development contains two basic types of books, namely, edited collections of original chapters by several authors, and original volumes written by one author or a small group of authors.
