Melanoma is the fifth most common cancer in the United States and the deadliest of all skin cancers. Even with recent advancements in treatment, there is still a 13% two-year recurrence rate, with approximately 30% of recurrences being distant metastases. Identifying patients at high risk for recurrence or advanced disease is critical for optimal clinical decision-making. Currently, there is substantial variability in the selection of screening tests and imaging, with most modalities characterized by relatively low accuracy. In the current study, we built upon a preliminary examination of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) in the melanoma setting to examine its utility for diagnostic and prognostic assessment. Using regression analysis, we found that selected DSC profile (thermogram) parameters were useful for differentiation between melanoma patients and healthy controls, with more complex models distinguishing melanoma patients with no evidence of disease from patients with active disease. Thermogram features contributing to the third principal component (PC3) were useful for differentiation between controls and melanoma patients, and Cox proportional hazards regression analysis indicated that PC3 was useful for predicting the overall survival of active melanoma patients. With the further development and optimization of the classification method, DSC could complement current diagnostic strategies to improve screening, diagnosis, and prognosis of melanoma patients.

Predator‐based selection is ubiquitous and can be a major driver of phenotypic and life‐history evolution. However, how characteristics of individual prey species influence predation risk is unknown for many taxa. This dearth of information on what factors can drive predation risk is particularly profound for small terrestrial vertebrates. We focused our research on the rough earth snake (Haldea striatula), which is ideal for this research because they are small, abundant and subject to predation from a host of predators. We then tested for the role of sex, color morph and body size on the likelihood that a snake would experience attempted predation. This was accomplished by coupling the (1) examination of natural history specimens for evidence of predation and (2) use of clay models of rough earth snakes to test for variation in predation in a natural setting. For the natural history study, we found that scars on specimens increased in frequency with body size, but wound frequency did not differ based upon color pattern or sex. For the clay model study, we found that attack rates increased with model size. Our results suggest that predation risk increases with body size in these diminutive snakes, perhaps due to greater detection probability or different predatory assemblages for larger snakes. More broadly, our results suggest that predator‐based selection may drive smaller body size, which has implications for understanding the diversity of body size in snakes. Adults are more likely to cooperate with in-group members than with out-group members in the context of social dilemmas, situations in which self-interest is in conflict with collective interest. This bias has the potential to profoundly shape human cooperation, and therefore it is important to understand when it emerges in development. Here we asked whether 6- to 9-year-old children (N = 146) preferentially cooperate with in-group members in the context of a well-studied social dilemma, the iterated Prisoner's Dilemma Game. We assigned children to minimal groups and paired them with unfamiliar same-age and same-gender peers. Consistent with our predictions, children were more likely to cooperate with in-group members than with out-group members in this minimal group context. This finding adds to the current literature on group bias in children's prosocial behavior by showing that it affects decision making in a context that calls on strategic cooperation. In addition, our analyses revealed an effect of gender, with girls more likely to cooperate than boys regardless of the group membership of their partner. Exploring this gender effect further, we found an interaction between gender and age across condition, with older girls showing less sensitivity to the group membership of their partner than younger girls and with older boys showing more sensitivity to the group membership of the partner than younger boys. Our findings suggest that risky cooperation in the face of social dilemmas is shaped by group bias during childhood, highlighting the potentially deeply rooted ties between cooperation and parochialism in humans., (Copyright © 2023 Elsevier Inc. The shortest distance around the Universe through us is unlikely to be much larger than the horizon diameter if microwave background anomalies are due to cosmic topology. We show that observational constraints from the lack of matched temperature circles in the microwave background leave many possibilities for such topologies. We evaluate the detectability of microwave background multipole correlations for sample cases. Searches for topology signatures in observational data over the large space of possible topologies pose a formidable computational challenge.

Background: Performing catheter-care observations in outpatient hemodialysis facilities are one of the CDC's core interventions, which have been proven to reduce bloodstream infections. However, staff have many competing responsibilities. Efforts to increase and streamline the process of performing observations are needed. We developed an electronic catheter checklist, formatted for easy access with a mobile device, and conducted a pilot project to determine the feasibility of implementing it in outpatient dialysis facilities., Methods: The tool contained the following content: ( 1 ) patient education videos; ( 2 ) catheter-care checklists (connection, disconnection, and exit-site care); ( 3 ) prepilot and postpilot surveys; and ( 4 ) a pilot implementation guide. Participating hemodialysis facilities performed catheter-care observations on either a weekly or monthly schedule and provided feedback on implementation of the tool., Results: The pilot data were collected from January 6 through March 12, 2020, at seven participating facilities. A total of 954 individual observations were performed. The catheter-connection, disconnection, and exit-site steps were performed correctly for most individual steps; however, areas for improvement were ( 1 ) allowing for appropriate antiseptic dry time, ( 2 ) avoiding contact after antisepsis, and ( 3 ) applying antibiotic ointment to the exit site. Postpilot feedback from staff was mostly favorable. Use of the electronic checklists facilitated patient engagement with staff and was preferred over paper checklists, because data are easily downloaded and available for use in facility Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) meetings. The educational video content was a unique learning opportunity for both patients and staff., Conclusions: Converting the CDC's existing catheter checklists to electronic forms reduced paperwork and improved the ease of collating data for use during QAPI meetings. Introduced species can become invasive, damaging ecosystems and disrupting economies through explosive population growth. One mechanism underlying population expansion in invasive populations is 'enemy release', whereby the invader experiences relaxation of agonistic interactions with other species, including parasites. However, direct observational evidence of release from parasitism during invasion is rare. We mimicked the early stages of invasion by experimentally translocating populations of mite-parasitized slender anole lizards ( Anolis apletophallus ) to islands that varied in the number of native anoles. Two islands were anole-free prior to the introduction, whereas a third island had a resident population of Gaige's anole ( Anolis gaigei ). We then characterized changes in trombiculid mite parasitism over multiple generations post-introduction. We found that mites rapidly went extinct on one-species islands, but that lizards introduced to the two-species island retained mites. After three generations, the two-species island had the highest total density and biomass of lizards, but the lowest density of the introduced species, implying that the 'invasion' had been less successful. This field-transplant study suggests that native species can be 'enemy reservoirs' that facilitate co-colonization of ectoparasites with the invasive host. Broadly, these results indicate that the presence of intact and diverse native communities may help to curb invasiveness.

For many patients with end-stage kidney disease, transplantation improves survival and quality of life compared with dialysis. However, complications and side effects in kidney transplant recipients can limit their ability to participate in activities of daily living including work, study, and recreational activities. The aim of this study was to identify the characteristics, content, and psychometric properties of the outcome measures used to assess life participation in kidney transplant recipients. We searched MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, and CINAHL from inception to July 2018 for all studies that reported life participation in kidney transplant recipients. Two authors identified instruments measuring life participation and reviewed for characteristics. In total, 230 studies were included: 19 (8%) randomized trials, 17 (7%) nonrandomized trials, and 194 (85%) observational studies. Across these studies, we identified 29 different measures that were used to assess life participation. Twelve (41%) measures specifically assessed aspects of life participation (eg, disability assessment, daily activities of living), while 17 (59%) assessed other constructs (eg, quality of life) that included questions on life participation. Validation data to support the use of these measures in kidney transplant recipients were available for only 7 measures. A wide range of measures have been used to assess life participation in kidney transplant recipients, but validation data supporting the use of these measures in this population are sparse. A content relevant and validated measure to improve the consistency and accuracy of measuring life participation in research may inform strategies for transplant recipients to be better able to engage in their life activities., (© 2019 The American Society of Transplantation and the American Society of Transplant Surgeons.)

Background: Kidney transplantation confers substantial survival and quality of life benefits for many patients with end-stage kidney disease compared with dialysis, but complications and side effects of immunosuppression can impair participation in daily life activities. Life participation is a critically important patient-reported outcome for kidney transplant recipients but is infrequently and inconsistently measured in trials. We convened a consensus workshop on establishing an outcome measure for life participation for use in all trials in kidney transplantation., Methods: Twenty-five (43%) kidney transplant recipients/caregivers and 33 (57%) health professionals from 8 countries participated in 6 facilitated breakout group discussions. Transcripts were analyzed thematically., Results: Four themes were identified. Returning to normality conveyed the patients' goals to fulfill their roles (ie, in their family, work, and community) and reestablish a normal lifestyle after transplant. Recognizing the diverse meaning and activities of "life" explicitly acknowledged life participation as a subjective concept that could refer to different activities (eg, employment, recreation, family duties) for each individual patient. Capturing vulnerability and fluctuations posttransplant (eg, due to complications and side-effects) distinguished between experiences in the first year posttransplant and the long-term impact of transplantation. Having a scientifically rigorous, feasible, and meaningful measure was expected to enable consistent and frequent assessment of life participation in trials in kidney transplantation., Conclusions: A feasible and validated core outcome measure for life participation is needed so that this critically important patient-reported outcome can be consistently and meaningfully assessed in trials in kidney transplantation to inform decision making and care of recipients.
