Abstract

In this first part of our series, we delve into the foundational aspects of the "Message in a Bottle" (henceforth referred to as MIAB). This study stands as a continuation of the legacy set by the Voyager Golden Records launched aboard Voyager 1 and 2 in 1977, which aimed to communicate with intelligent species beyond our world. These Records continue to serve not only as a snapshot of Earth and humanity but also carry forth our desire for establishing contact with advanced alien civilizations. Given the absence of mutually understood signs, symbols, and semiotic conventions, MIAB, like its predecessor, seeks to use scientific methods to design an innovative means of communication encapsulating the story of humanity. Our aim is to convey our collective knowledge, feelings, innovations, and aspirations in a manner that offers a universal, yet contextual understanding of human society, the evolution of life on Earth, and our hopes and concerns for the future. Through this time and space traveling capsule, we also strive to inspire and unify current and future generations to celebrate and safeguard our shared human experience.

8. CLADE: Cycle Loss Augmented Degradation Enhancement for Unpaired Super-Resolution of Anisotropic Medical Images

Abstract

Three-dimensional (3D) imaging is popular in medical applications, however, anisotropic 3D volumes with thick, low-spatial-resolution slices are often acquired to reduce scan times. Deep learning (DL) offers a solution to recover high-resolution features through super-resolution reconstruction (SRR). Unfortunately, paired training data is unavailable in many 3D medical applications and therefore we propose a novel unpaired approach; CLADE (Cycle Loss Augmented Degradation Enhancement). CLADE uses a modified CycleGAN architecture with a cycle-consistent gradient mapping loss, to learn SRR of the low-resolution dimension, from disjoint patches of the high-resolution plane within the anisotropic 3D volume data itself. We show the feasibility of CLADE in abdominal MRI and abdominal CT and demonstrate significant improvements in CLADE image quality over low-resolution volumes and state-of-the-art self-supervised SRR; SMORE (Synthetic Multi-Orientation Resolution Enhancement). Quantitative PIQUE (qualitative perception-based image quality evaluator) scores and quantitative edge sharpness (ES - calculated as the maximum gradient of pixel intensities over a border of interest), showed superior performance for CLADE in both MRI and CT. Qualitatively CLADE had the best overall image quality and highest perceptual ES over the low-resolution volumes and SMORE. This paper demonstrates the potential of using CLADE for super-resolution reconstruction of anisotropic 3D medical imaging data without the need for paired 3D training data.

Abstract

An updated, binary-coded message has been developed for transmission to extraterrestrial intelligences in the Milky Way galaxy. The proposed message includes basic mathematical and physical concepts to establish a universal means of communication followed by information on the biochemical composition of life on Earth, the Solar System's time-stamped position in the Milky Way relative to known globular clusters, as well as digitized depictions of the Solar System, and Earth's surface. The message concludes with digitized images of the human form, along with an invitation for any receiving intelligences to respond. Calculation of the optimal timing during a given calendar year is specified for potential future transmission from both the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope in China and the SETI Institute's Allen Telescope Array in northern California to a selected region of the Milky Way which has been proposed as the most likely for life to have developed. Abstract

Features in the distribution of exoplanet parameters by period demonstrate that the distribution of planet parameters is rich with information that can provide essential guidance to understanding planet histories. Structure has been found in the counts of planet-star "objects" by period, and within these structures, there are different correlations of eccentricity with planet number, stellar metallicity, planet count density per log period, stellar multiplicity, and planet mass. These appear to change with each other, and with stellar mass, but there are too few planets to easily and reliably study these important relationships. These relationships are the bulk observables against which the theory of planet formation and evolution must be tested. The opportunity to determine the nature of the relationships of the exoplanet parameters on each other demonstrate the value of finding more planets across period ranging from days to thousands of days and beyond. We recommend support for continuing to find more planets, even giant planets, with periods up to periods of a few thousand days. 35. Unexpected gap creating two peaks in the periods of planets of metal-rich sunlike single stars

Abstract

The pileup of planets at periods of roughly one year and beyond is actually a bimodal peak with a wide, sharp gap splitting the peak of the pileup in a major population of large planets. Consisting of nearly 40\% of planets with periods past 200 days, the periods of the planets of metal-rich stars like the sun in surface gravity which do not have a stellar companion show two strong peaks separated by a sparsely populated region. Monte Carlo tests show that this structure is unlikely to occur in random distributions, and a comparison with objects from all the other populations show that this feature is unlikely to be due to observational effects. The peaks have their highest density next to the gap. These two peaks are most strongly seen in single-planet systems, though the gap persists in multiple planet systems. These features are likely characteristic of planets with masses not too much lower than Jupiter, and perhaps not too much higher. Abstract

BackgroundNeighborhood socioeconomic deprivation is associated with adverse health outcomes. We sought to determine if neighborhood socioeconomic deprivation was associated with adherence to immunosuppressive medications after liver transplantation.MethodsWe conducted a secondary analysis of a multicenter, prospective cohort of children enrolled in the medication adherence in children who had a liver transplant study (enrollment 2010-2013). Participants (N = 271) received a liver transplant ≥1 year before enrollment and were subsequently treated with tacrolimus. The primary exposure, connected to geocoded participant home addresses, was a neighborhood socioeconomic deprivation index (range 0-1, higher indicates more deprivation). The primary outcome was the medication level variability index (MLVI), a surrogate measure of adherence to immunosuppression in pediatric liver transplant recipients. Higher MLVI indicates worse adherence behavior; values ≥2.5 are predictive of late allograft rejection.ResultsThere was a 5% increase in MLVI for each 0.1 increase in deprivation index (95% confidence interval, -1% to 11%; P = 0.08). Roughly 24% of participants from the most deprived quartile had an MLVI ≥2.5 compared with 12% in the remaining 3 quartiles (P = 0.018). Black children were more likely to have high MLVI even after adjusting for deprivation (adjusted odds ratio 4.0 95% confidence interval, 1.7-10.6).ConclusionsThis is the first study to evaluate associations between neighborhood socioeconomic deprivation and an objective surrogate measure of medication adherence in children posttransplant. These findings suggest that neighborhood context may be an important consideration when assessing adherence. Differential rates of medication adherence may partly explain links between neighborhood factors and adverse health outcomes following pediatric liver transplantation.

38. Hopf-Galois module structure of a class of tame quaternionic fields

Abstract

We study the Hopf-Galois module structure of rings of integers in tame Galois extensions L=F of global fields with Galois group isomorphic to the quaternion group of order 8. We determine explicitly the Hopf algebras giving Hopf-Galois structures on such extensions and study which of these are isomorphic as Hopf algebras or as F-algebras. We study "quotient" structures in order to understand the Hopf-Galois module structure in such extensions corresponding to Hopf algebras of cyclic type. Next we specialise to a certain family of tame quaternionic extensions, L/?, employing a construction of Fujisaki. We show that for these extensions the ring of algebraic integers, ?L, is locally free over its associated order in each of the Hopf-Galois structures. We find explicit local generators for all but the structures of cyclic type. We then employ the machinery of locally free class groups to study the structures of dihedral type and give necessary and sufficient conditions for ?L to be free over its associated order in each of these structures.

Abstract

This study examines intersections of mathematics and literature within encyclopedic narratives by Don DeLillo, Thomas Pynchon, and David Foster Wallace. My interdisciplinary approach draws upon the case of Nicolas Bourbaki, whose 'encyclopedic' treatise, Éléments de mathématique, provides an important cultural touchstone for contemporary visions of mathematics as a totalised system. The pseudonym for a group of world-leading French mathematicians working in the middle of the twentieth century, Bourbaki attempted to create a definitive mathematical textbook from three foundational structures. Bourbaki's article 'The Architecture of Mathematics', often considered a manifesto for the group, details three 'great' or 'mother-structures' - topological, algebraic, and ordered structures - which together encompass the entirety of mathematical activity and theory. While playing an important part in Bourbaki's project to unify, encircle, and totalise mathematics, these structures also reveal how encyclopedic narratives utilise the figurative efficacy of mathematics to challenge such epistemological exhaustion. Though Don DeLillo's Ratner's Star has long been recognised as structured upon the history of mathematics, considering how this encyclopedic novel alludes to its intertexts through the figure of the Möbius strip reveals its fundamentally topological structure. The difficult equations in Gravity's Rainbow can be seen, through the concept of algebraic structures, to model Pynchon's metaphorical processes. Finally, Wallace's use of enumerated endnotes in Infinite Jest complements his interest in Georg Cantor's mathematical set theory, explicated in Everything & More: understood through ordered structures, Wallace's hierarchical manipulation of narrative containers are revealed to be mathematically informed representations of consciousness. By regarding the topological, algebraic, and ordered structures of mathematics as modelling DeLillo, Pynchon, and Wallace's figurative strategies - respectively, of allusion, metaphor, and representations of consciousness - the interplay between mathematics and encyclopedic narrative can be better appreciated.
