10. The Dream of Sisyphus: Mathematics Education in South Africa

Abstract

Background: South African schooling is caught in a vicious cycle, characterised by weak initial teacher education (ITE) and weaker-than-average learning outcomes, resulting in low teacher status and attempts to reform schooling by means of continuous professional development (CPD). Aim: The paper attempts to understand the reasons for poor performance in mathematics and to explore avenues for improvement. Setting: Teaching in South African schools. Method: Three mechanisms for improving teaching and learning are identified: ITE, CPD and the management of and support to teachers. Drawing on the research literature, the paper examines the potential of each for reforming the system. Results: Tests based on the school curriculum indicate that final-year BEd students are quite unprepared to teach mathematics in primary schools, revealing very significant shortcomings in ITE curricula. CPD, where it is well designed and rigorously evaluated, has been shown to have small effects on both teacher knowledge and learner performance. However, unless ITE is reformed at the same time, CPD becomes a never ending task of making marginal differences to the shortcomings of each successive cohort of qualified but incompetent teachers emerging from the universities. Conclusion: While the weak state of governance in the civil service remains a major obstacle to improved schooling, and while every effort must be made to raise the capacity of inservice teachers, maximal leverage in boosting teacher capacity sits firmly with the universities. While CPD has, at most a few hours a month to bridge huge gaps in teacher knowledge, ITE has at its disposal four years of full-time study with young, plastic minds.

11. Optimising fungicide application tactics : using mathematical modelling to understand qualitative and quantitative fungicide resistance management

Abstract

Plant diseases pose a significant threat to food security, and fungal plant pathogens can be particularly damaging due to enormous evolutionary potential. Two major control strategies for fungal pathogens include chemical control with fungicides and use of disease-resistant cultivars. Both strategies are threatened by pathogen evolution leading to fungicide resistance and loss of cultivar efficacy ('cultivar breakdown'). Both fungicide resistance and cultivar breakdown can be characterised as qualitative or quantitative, depending on the genetic basis for resistance/breakdown. Mathematical models have an important role in understanding fungicide resistance and cultivar breakdown, and modelling studies offer numerous advantageous over experimental studies. We present a model of qualitative fungicide resistance and one of quantitative fungicide resistance and cultivar breakdown. The model of qualitative resistance extends a model from the literature, while the quantitative resistance model is entirely novel. Both models are parameterised to address Septoria, the most prevalent disease of wheat. Although qualitative resistance has been widely studied, many single-site fungicides (i.e. those challenged by qualitative resistance) face widespread resistance, meaning that quantitative resistance is increasingly important. However, the mechanisms underlying quantitative resistance/breakdown are more complex and suitable data for model fitting is harder to source. We present the first model of quantitative resistance to be fitted to field data for both fungicide resistance and cultivar breakdown. Fungicide mixtures can help delay resistance. Although many studies focus on mixtures of fungicides to which resistance is qualitative, the optimal strategy is not characterised if the initial resistance frequencies (RFs) to two fungicides in a mixture differ. Past work showed that equal selection for single resistant strains in the first year was the optimal strategy when initial RFs were equal but did not consider when the initial RFs differ. We show that this strategy is often sub-optimal if the initial RFs differ and present an alternative strategy based on equalising RFs in the breakdown year. We test the robustness of this strategy to changes in parameters controlling fungicide efficacy and pathogen epidemiology, including between-season pathogen sexual reproduction. Previous modelling studies of Septoria neglected pathogen sexual reproduction, for simplicity, despite evidence that sexual reproduction is an important part of Septoria's life cycle. We use the quantitative resistance model to determine how the number of fungicide applications per year affects resistance development, disease severity and yield. We consider how the optimal strategy varies depending on the time-frame of interest, before exploring how cultivar and fungicide control can be optimally combined to control the pathogen whilst minimising degradation of host and fungicide. We explore the effect of fungicide dose and compare the recommendations from the quantitative resistance model to those from the qualitative resistance model. Most fungicide resistance studies consider strategies which are fixed in time - i.e. rely on the same tactic used every year until failure. We present a flexible approach to optimise time-variable strategies, based on dynamic programming. This allows us to address an otherwise computationally infeasible problem to find the optimal strategy when time-variable strategies are permitted. We compare the improvement offered by the optimal time-variable strategy to the optimal fixed-time strategy.

18. 'Centipede' copolymer boundary lubricants at the solid-oil interface : structure and interactions

Abstract

Statistical copolymers are widespread in industrial applications involving non-polar solvents, including as steric stabilisers and lubricant oil additives. Despite this, the molecular self-assembly and adsorption behaviour of statistical copolymers is relatively poorly understood relative to their block copolymer analogues. In this work, the adsorption behaviour, interfacial structure and lubrication mediated in a non-polar medium by a class of functionalised olefin copolymers (FOCPs) was studied using a range of solution and surface characterisation techniques. The FOCPs consist of a hydrophobic poly(ethylene)-poly(propylene) (PE-PP) backbone and a statistical distribution of polar groups bearing imide and aromatic functionality. Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) measurements confirmed self-assembly of the FOCPs into large, network-like aggregates in n-dodecane. A combination of adsorption isotherm measurements and X-ray reflectivity (XRR) were used to investigate the adsorption behaviour of the FOCPs at the solid-oil interface which provided strong evidence for associative multilayer adsorption on top of a strongly adsorbed first layer, facilitated by interactions between the polar functional groups of adjacent FOCPs. Associative multilayering of the FOCPs under lateral compression at the air-water interface was investigated using XRR and dilational rheology, demonstrating the formation of an 'interfacial gel' that could be successfully transferred to solid substrates by Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) deposition for subsequent frictional studies in oil. The surface forces apparatus (SFA) was used to investigate the confined film structure and frictional behaviour of FOCP boundary films in n-dodecane, demonstrating significant differences in lubrication behaviour as a function of subtle changes in interfacial structure, resulting solely from the film deposition method (physisorption vs. LB deposition). These results shed light on the fundamental self-assembly and adsorption behaviour of statistical copolymers at interfaces, and on tuning the boundary lubrication performance of polymers in non-polar media, which is of key importance to future oil-based lubrication strategies.

Abstract

This paper argues that a new 'domestic regime' has taken hold in Anglo-American economies since 2008. The combination of austere fiscal policy and loose monetary policy produced sustained house-price inflation in an otherwise stagnant economy. This combined with broadband-enabled digital platforms, a highly flexible labour market, and a routinely undervalued social reproductive sector to transform how capitalism operates in these economies. Taking the United Kingdom as a central case, our goal in this paper is to articulate what constitutes a 'domestic regime', and to locate this concept within wider sociological and political-economic debates. To adequately grasp the contemporary regime, we suggest that it needs to be considered in all its multifaceted, interlocking dimensions: the financial, the infrastructural, the reproductive and the productive. 31. Reflections on Integrating the Political into Environmental Education through Problem-Based Learning and Political Ecology

Abstract

This paper reflects on an undergraduate module at the University of Exeter (2018-2019) trialing a problem-based learning approach to the political ecologies of land. It found that this approach offers significant value for teaching and learning complex socio-ecological interdisciplinarity and instilling in learners a deep and reflective sense of the political in all considerations of land and nature. Team-based co-production of 'solutions' to 'problems' imbued learners with a sense of personal agency, though many found problem-based approaches an unfamiliar and challenging approach to path dependent modes of teaching and learning. The principal contribution is to show how problem-based pedagogies have the potential to empower learners as change agents, to better engage with socio-ecological complexity, and gain greater insights into the deep political in conceptions of nature. It offers environmental educators a pathway for replication of this approach, and for introducing learners to problem-based pedagogies for a political ecology of education.

41. Impact of Technology Based Instruction on Speech Competency and Presentation Confidence Levels of Hispanic College Students

Abstract

One of the main goals of universities is to graduate students who are capable and competent in competing in the workforce. As presentational communication skills are critical in today's job market, Hispanic university students need to be trained to effectively develop and deliver presentational speeches. Web/technology enhanced training techniques are one way to accomplish this. However, prohibitive costs of technology means that higher education leadership must be convinced that this form of instruction is effective before purchasing equipment. Thus this study investigates the effect of web/technology enhanced training techniques on Hispanic university students' confidence and on their ability to become better communicators when giving presentations. The Hauser Lab, a technology-based speech-tutoring center was utilized. Students first use web-connected computers to view famous, effective and correctly formatted presentations. Then they write their own presentations which they present in a mocked-up classroom outfitted with video cameras and microphones. The final step is for the student to watch the recorded presentation with the Lab staff providing critiques. A survey was given both to students who attended the Lab and students who did not. A one-way analysis of variance was conducted to evaluate the difference between the students on their perceived readiness to give a presentation. Students who attended the Lab scored significantly higher than those who did not attend the Lab. The effect size suggests that 44% of the variance was accounted for by the Lab. This is considered a strong relationship.

42. Addressing the 'Leadership Conundrum' through a Mixed Methods Study of School Leadership for Literacy

Abstract

This paper explores methodological insights from a mixed methods study that aims to understand how school leaders promote literacy development in their schools. The study findings consider both the complementarities and the challenges of the qualitative and quantitative approaches to measuring leadership practices and their linkages with learning across schools. We begin by identifying a conundrum in school leadership and management (SLM) research -- strong effects found in qualitative studies and weaker effects in quantitative studies. From the literature we identify some of the central challenges that account for these differences. We then show how these challenges were and were not addressed in the mixed method research we conducted in an SLM study of South African primary schools in challenging contexts. We consider why the central aim of the study -- to develop a scalable instrument for measuring SLM -- remains elusive.
