Abstract

Adherence optimization and measurement have emerged as critically challenging issues for clinical trials of topical microbicides. Although microbicide trials have routinely collected adherence data, their utilization in trial design, implementation, and interpretation has been inconsistent. Drawing on data-driven presentations from several focused meetings, this paper synthesizes lessons from past microbicide trials and provides recommendations for future trials of microbicide and other HIV prevention technologies. First, it describes four purposes for adherence data collection, with particular attention to intention-to-treat versus adherence-adjusted analyses for determining effectiveness. Second, the microbicide field’s experiences with adherence measures and data collection modes are discussed, including the strengths and weaknesses of various options and approaches for improving measurement. Then, several approaches to optimizing trial participants’ adherence are presented. The paper concludes with a set of recommendations for immediate use or further research.

9. Parental Support for Teenage Pregnancy Prevention Programmes in South Carolina Public Middle Schools

Abstract

Teenage pregnancy is a major public health issue in the USA; this is especially true in the state of South Carolina (SC). Research shows that well developed, good-quality teenage pregnancy prevention (TPP) programmes can be effective in modifying young people's sexual behaviour. While several quantitative studies have examined parents' perceptions of TPP programmes in secondary schools, the purpose of this study was to qualitatively examine parents' perceptions of these school-based initiatives in SC public middle schools and investigate the role parents play in sustaining these programmes over time. The study employed a qualitative, phenomenological research design. Seven semi-structured focus groups were conducted with parents of SC middle school students (n = 72). Focus groups were audio recorded for transcription and thematic analysis. Thematic analysis revealed that parents support TPP programmes in schools and want students to learn about both abstinence and contraception. Parents want schools to provide greater access to the curriculum to reinforce TPP messages at home. Participants asserted it was their responsibility to ensure TPP programmes are sustained in schools. This study concludes that educating students about TPP is a collaborative process between parents and schools.

The study attempts to evaluate the efficacy of cellulose sulfate gel in the prevention of vaginal HIV transmission among women. The results indicate that cellulose sulfate gel did not prevent HIV transmission and may have even increased the risk of getting HIV.

Abstract

Three constituents of the Martian atmosphere, methane, carbon dioxide, and oxygen, can be used for internal combustion in engines utilized for future space exploration on Mars. These three gases, considered as the test case in this research, will be examined to determine required flow rates needed for combustion and optimization of engine performance. Results of the test case are examined in relation to a base case of methane and air for comparative purposes. Testing of exhaust temperatures, cylinder pressure, and exhaust gas analysis were performed for the base case and test case. Also described is a study utilizing a zirconia cell to convert carbon dioxide into usable oxygen to help support future Mars missions.
