Abstract

The 2022 Online Learning Consortium (OLC) Blended Learning Symposium was a response to the events of the past decade, such as an absence of a concerted blended learning program, the pandemic, flagging student interest in higher education, technology's explosive development, and pressures to reconsider what constitutes a responsive and effective university. Primarily, however, the symposium chronicled in this report is future-oriented, illustrating that long-held educational value systems need reconsideration. This work is a metaphoric Rosetta Stone codifying ideas of the most forward-thinking and thoughtful educators in the blended learning space. Learning independently offline or online is no longer a viable concept. The report makes it clear that interaction among learning spaces and people is the new blended paradigm.

4. "Ownership gets you up in the morning, but can keep you awake at night" : an exploration of the development of work-related psychological ownership in early career professionals

Abstract

Studies of Psychological Ownership (PO) have captured the imagination of scholars in organisational research and beyond due to the many suggested positive outcomes which occur from feelings of "mine". Nevertheless, the initial conceptualisation of PO has been under investigated, leaving early questions still unanswered and warranting further research. Consequently, this research aims to contribute to our understanding by exploring how PO develops in early career professionals who are entering the workplace. A qualitative methodological approach consisting of twenty-six interviews with Work Placement Students (WPS), Supervisors and Placement Development Advisors (PDA) captures a rich, detailed tapestry of PO development. To date, quantitative studies dominate PO research, and this study aims to provide some much-needed methodological diversity. Findings indicate four key conclusions. Firstly, that job-related PO can develop earlier than originally suggested, often via a building block approach with participants showing examples of task ownership within the first three months of their work placement and most demonstrating job role and project PO promptly thereafter. Secondly, conclusions were reached that for job-related PO to be quickly and successfully developed, there is a requirement for ownership permissioning via an active relational "giving and taking ownership" process. Job-related ownership was expediated through the organisational culture clearly signalling ownership expectations and the supervisor actively "giving" ownership and demonstrating trust in the individual. "Taking" ownership was demonstrated by participants in two forms; either once permissioned, the individual job crafted to continually develop job-related ownership; or if ownership was not given or permissioned, it was sometimes still taken by the incumbent. Thirdly, new outcomes from job-related PO were observed in this group of participants, including pride in their work and an increase in confidence. Nonetheless, if ownership was felt strongly, it often weighed heavily on the shoulders of participants, and this burden of ownership should not be underestimated. Given individuals are only just understanding "how work, works", employers need to be aware of the negative implications when individuals feel they fall short of perceived personal, supervisory and organisational expectations. Consequently, there needs to be management of the potential high stress levels this weight can cause. Finally, a possible new PO target was identified in this research as career- related PO. For these young workers who have been conditioned to believe there is no job for life, the attachment to developing their career seemed exceedingly strong in some participants. This has potential to cause tension between other PO targets, such as the job role and the organisation. Career PO may become their one, consistent attachment in working life.

Abstract

Breast cancer survivors not only experience distressing physical symptoms associated with treatments, but also are faced with psychosocial challenges. Despite growing scientific evidence that physical activity (PA) may mitigate psychosocial distress experienced by women treated for breast cancer, the literature is equivocal.This study investigated the relationships between cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), PA, and psychosocial factors in breast cancer survivors.Data involving overweight or obese breast cancer survivors (N = 260) were examined. CRF was determined by a submaximal graded exercise test. PA, depressive symptoms, total fatigue, and global self-esteem were assessed with self-report measures. Pearson's correlations were conducted to determine associations among CRF, PA, depressive symptoms, total fatigue, and global self-esteem. Multiple regression models, with age and body mass index as covariates, were performed using continuous levels for CRF and PA.Bivariate correlations suggested that CRF and PA were unrelated to the psychosocial variables. One of the regression models identified a marginally significant (P = 0.06) inverse association between depressive symptoms and PA.CRF and PA were not associated with psychosocial factors in this sample of breast cancer survivors. However, minimal PA was reported by the majority of participants, so low PA variability likely influenced these findings.

18. Academic Librarians' Practices and Perceptions on Web-Based Instruction for Academic Library Patrons as Adult Learners

Abstract

Academic librarians are encouraged to provide library services, resources, and instruction to all patrons, including the adult learner. Statistics reported that worldwide, adults are a growing student population in colleges and universities; however, the adult learner as an academic library patron is often neglected. Academic libraries can establish value to its stakeholders and support the information needs of adult learners through an active commitment to the process of web-based information literacy instruction that includes outcomes assessments. The purpose of this study was to examine academic librarians' practices and perceptions on web-based instruction for academic library patrons as adult learners. Three research questions guide this mixed-method study. The first research question focused on forms of web-based instruction. The second research question examined the Association of Colleges and Research Libraries (ACRL) "Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education." The third question explored the use of outcomes assessments in web-based instruction. Quantitative data were collected through use of a survey distributed to the ALA's Information Literacy Instruction Electronic Discussion List (ILI-L). The qualitative method gathered academic librarians' practices and perceptions through semi-structured interviews. Six themes emerged from the semi-structured interviews: (1) web-based instruction practices, (2) rationale for use, (3) instructional methods and strategies, (4) information literacy competency areas, (5) information literacy competency standards, and (6) formative and summative assessments. The findings, survey results, and emerging themes suggested implications for practices and further research on outcomes assessments in web-based instruction. There is also a significant need for more web-based instruction designed specifically for the adult learner. These suggestions concern all academic librarians involved in the distribution and development of web-based instruction. 27. Developing Culturally Competent Faculty: A Cognitive, Affective, and Spiritual Model

Abstract

The past decade has evidenced significant dialogue on faith-based campuses about the persistent gap between the increasing ethnic diversity of the student population and that of the faculty. While campus administrators and leaders acknowledge the need to address this concern through faculty development, there is a disturbing lack of successful models for developing a culturally competent faculty. When coupled with the motivation of faith-based institutions to integrate a biblical foundation and spiritual approach to these topics, it can feel like an overwhelming task. In this article, the authors describe a faculty development pilot program that serves as a "best practices" model designed to blend the cognitive, affective, and spiritual dimensions and required faculty to engage with the complexities of diversity from multiple perspectives. The model includes several foundational elements, yet the authors believe it could be adapted to fit a variety of university contexts where cultural competency is both valued and needed.

28. Culturally Relevant Pedagogy and Behaviors: A Study of Faculty Beliefs at Six Christian Postsecondary Institutions

Abstract

This study explored the perspectives of faculty at six evangelical Christian universities concerning cultural diversity and how theological beliefs might impact faculty members' commitment to a culturally competent pedagogy. A mixed methods design employing both quantitative (survey) and qualitative (interviews) was utilized for data collection. Two hundred fifty-four faculty members voluntarily responded to an original survey. Subsequently, 30 faculty members participated in a follow-up interview with the researcher. An analysis of the data provided evidence of a variety of effective culturally relevant pedagogies at Christian institutions. Many participants stated that building relationships with students of color was even more important than specific instructional practices. This study suggests that an increasing number of faculty are interested in adapting their behavior and pedagogy, an encouraging finding for students of color. The wide range of teaching strategies and faculty development options described by participants suggests that developing a culturally competent faculty can be accomplished through multiple means. 35. How the Accelerated Reader Program Can Become Counterproductive for High School Students

Abstract

Two pressing education reforms entail improving students' reading skills and improving high schools in the United States. In this article, the authors focus on both of these issues by adding the voices of students in an underperforming high school to the discussion about reading reform. We present the results of a larger study pertaining specifically to the views of students who participated in eight focus groups, in which students questioned the implementation of the Accelerated Reader (AR) program. There were five reasons that students did not like the program's implementation and claimed that it did not increase their motivation to read, making AR counterproductive. The results suggest that reading reform strategies that may work at the elementary level may not be as effective for adolescents, and that in order for true high school and reading reform to occur, the views and unique needs of older students must be examined and taken more seriously.

39. Storytelling: Enhancing Language Acquisition in Young Children.

Abstract

We know that children are active participants in their acquisition of language. Their language patterns are learned in social contexts while they are interacting with other children and adults. Studies continue to confirm that the development of vocabulary and syntactic complexity in language are more advanced in children who are frequently exposed to a variety of stories. Psycholinguists define reading as an active process based upon this interaction that is creative and predictive. When an audience listens to a storyteller, this type of thinking is demanded of them. The quality of that participation serves to enhance language usage. How does consistent exposure to a variety of stories improve the specific literacy skills of vocabulary, grammatics. length of utterance and sentence formation? How can we measure these gains qualitatively and quantitatively? What sorts of questions should we ask children to elicit creative and predictive thinking? This pilot study attempts to answer these questions and provide a framework for implementing the art of storytelling in individual classrooms.
