[...], The year 2014 was an eventful one for intellectual property law. Every branch of government affected intellectual property law in one way or another. The Supreme Court ruled on several important intellectual property law cases; federal and state legislatures contemplated and enacted various new statutes that changed the intellectual property law landscape; and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office continued to implement new procedures governing the issuance and reconsideration of intellectual property rights. These events captured the consciousness of the American public and garnered significant media attention, more so than any year in recent memory. As these events proved, technological advancements will continue to test the limits of intellectual property law. Courts will seek to clarify and refine intellectual property laws where complexity and confusion persist. Lawmakers will attempt to create or refine laws that respond to social and market pressure. And agencies will work toward full implementation of all of the changes that courts and lawmakers mandate. In sum, these events show that intellectual property law is and will continue to be an exciting and complex field. This essay provides an overview of these events and considers their importance and immediate impact.

Abstract

Photopheresis in addition to immunosuppressant drugs appears to reduce the rate of organ rejection. Photopheresis is a complicated technique that suppresses the activity of T cells in the recipient that would cause the body to reject a donor organ. Researchers randomly assigned 60 people who received a heart transplant to take three immunosuppressive drugs alone or the three drugs plus photopheresis. The rate of organ rejection was lower in the patients who had photopheresis. Survival rates were similar in both groups as was the rate of infection.

Abstract

Pseudoaneurysms are widened or twisted areas in a blood vessel resembling an aneurysm, a ballooning out of a vessel wall. Pseudoaneurysms are rare and may be fatal, and can occur after surgery on blood vessels. Occurrences of pseudoaneurysms have been reported following liver, pancreas, and kidney transplants, but not heart transplants. Two cases are described involving pseudoaneurysms in the aortas of patients who received heart transplants. The first patient, a 45-year-old man, had pneumonia and rejection episodes in the months following surgery. A routine X-ray suggested an abnormality of the aorta, which was then further viewed with a computed tomographic (CT) scan and a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) study. The MRI images showed a hemispherical structure containing flowing blood, and this was confirmed by imaging with contrast media. The second patient, a 60-year-old man, developed an infection of the surgical wound, and an MRI study was done to determine the extent of the infection. The MRI images revealed a pseudoaneurysm that contained flowing blood and was surrounded by clot. These findings were confirmed by other imaging results and during surgery. As in these two cases, pseudoaneurysms often follow infections (case two) and may occur at sites involved in grafting procedures (case one). MRI imaging is better than CT scans because it can provide optimum images of the pseudoaneurysm, as well as not needing contrast media nor using ionizing radiation.
