Abstract

Calls are intensifying for workforce reskilling and a re-engineering of education and training to meet the demands of the future. Current policy in England focuses on technical, digital and green economy skills, underpinned by strong literacy and numeracy and a knowledge-rich school curriculum. National Foundation for Educational Research's Nuffield-funded research study, "The Skills Imperative 2035: Essential skills for tomorrow's workforce" investigates: (1) which essential employment skills will be most needed in 2035; (2) what will their likely supply be and where will the gaps be; (3) which occupations and workers are most at risk of not having these skills; (4) which skills will affected workers need to develop to transition into new employment opportunities; and (5) the role of educators and employers in helping to prepare young people and workers for the future labour market. This first report, a review drawing on a wide-ranging and growing evidence base, sets the scene for the wider research study by bringing together what the literature suggests about: (1) what the world of work will look like in 2035; and (2) which essential employment skills will be in demand and how what should be done to prepare.

11. Arts-Based Feedback: Using Memes for Midterm Evaluations

Abstract

In most higher education institutions, course evaluations are conducted at the end of the term. While many instructors implement a feedback system such as a questionnaire or poll at the midterm point, we propose that having students use an arts-based representation (i.e. memes) for a feedback channel can help students and the course instructor to create community. This activity can be completed in approximately 20 minutes over two class meetings. Not only does this allow students a creative outlet to express their feedback, it also allows instructors to consider common themes that are unique to the individual group and alter current and future classes accordingly. Courses: All/any. Objectives: This activity will allow students the opportunity to (1) evaluate pain points and pivotal moments in a course critically; (2) give the course instructor midterm feedback in a humorous way; and (3) strengthen classroom community by creating a portfolio of memes.

12. The Relationship between Early Adolescent Cyberbullying Victimization and Later Emotional Wellbeing and Academic Achievement

Abstract

This study addresses a knowledge gap in the literature about early adolescent cyberbullying victimization and the related positive and negative emotional wellbeing and academic achievement outcomes experienced over time. The study examines 9139 South Australian students (aged 10-13 years) who reported on cyberbullying status in Grade 6, and explores the relationship with emotional wellbeing and academic achievement outcomes measured in Grade 7 and Grade 9, while accounting for range of child, peer, school, and community covariates. Using mixed effects modeling, the results show that cyberbullying victimization is associated with significantly lower levels of happiness, life satisfaction, and higher levels of sadness, and worries over the shorter term (Grade 7), and significantly lower levels of reading and numeracy sustained across the longer term (Grades 7 and 9), compared to non-victimization. The results indicate that early adolescent cyberbullying may be associated with poor emotional wellbeing and academic achievement as one progresses through formal school and highlights the importance of considering the outcomes of bullying victimization beyond the immediate instance.

Abstract

Globalization is a powerful force with far reaching impacts on education and education policy. The growth of large scale international surveys of student achievement and the increasing role played by intergovernmental agencies in education means that the influence that globalization exerts on education is likely to increase even further in the future. This open access book provides a significant and timely investigation into the impacts that globalization has exerted on science curricula in a diverse range of countries using extensive data sets collected by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA) between 1995 and 2015. Using a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods, this book considers the extent to which there have been changes to the intended and implemented science curricula in different countries over the last 20 years. Consideration is then given as to whether science curricula are becoming increasingly similar across countries over time. Finally the issue of whether the basis of an international core curriculum can be identified is addressed. Readers will gain a unique insight into the extent to which globalization and large scale international assessments have influenced science curricula in the last 20 years within both the primary and secondary phases. Abstract

Sporadic gliomas in companion dogs provide a window on the interaction between tumorigenic mechanisms and host environment. We compared the molecular profiles of canine gliomas with those of human pediatric and adult gliomas to characterize evolutionarily conserved mammalian mutational processes in gliomagenesis. Employing whole-genome, exome, transcriptome, and methylation sequencing of 83 canine gliomas, we found alterations shared between canine and human gliomas such as the receptor tyrosine kinases, TP53 and cell-cycle pathways, and IDH1 R132. Canine gliomas showed high similarity with human pediatric gliomas per robust aneuploidy, mutational rates, relative timing of mutations, and DNA-methylation patterns. Our cross-species comparative genomic analysis provides unique insights into glioma etiology and the chronology of glioma-causing somatic alterations.

28. Examining the contribution of social work education to the digital professionalism of students for practice in the connected age

Abstract

Social work education is the gateway through which the protected title of social worker is secured. Given the professional status of social work there is an expectation that on qualification, students of social work will be practice prepared. This phenomenographic study considers preparedness in the connected age, through examining the contribution of social work education to the digital development of students, from the student point of view. Digital development, as related to professionalism, is set within the context of the digital shift, given the impact of digitalisation on people, on societies and on the social world. The professional requirements for social work education and practice include reference to technologies and technological skills. However, the world, in a technological sense has, and continues to move on. Thus, this study examines variation in students' experiences of digital development, with the view to informing curriculum design, content and delivery, in future terms. To begin to address the lack of clarity in social work about what professionalism in the digital age might realistically include, the terms 'digital' and 'professional' are conflated throughout this work to emphasise the relational nature of the two. Data generation involved semi-structured interviews, with 11 social work students at a single university in England, at the point of qualification; a time when students will have had the opportunity to engage with curriculum content in its fullest. Interview material was analysed using an iterative method that is in keeping with the phenomenographic approach. The findings evidence four qualitatively different conceptions of what digital development involved for this student group. Even though digital development was seen to occur, student descriptions show this development to have been largely limited and partly unrealised, due to the incidental nature of digital learning experienced throughout the duration of the course. If social work education in England is to prepare students adequately for the realities of 21st century practice, due consideration needs to be given to digitalisation, to the emerging nature of 21st century social need, and to how students are being equipped to respond to this. An exploration of how digitisation is explicitly reflected within curriculum design, content and delivery should form part of this, because as the findings of this study suggest, in situations where this has not occurred, it is long overdue.

30. The Protective Role of Social Support Sources and Types against Depression in Caregivers: A Meta-Analysis

Abstract

The protective effects of social support for caregiver mental health are well documented, however the differential impact of support providers (partner, child, family, siblings, friends, professionals) and types (perceived, received) remain unclear. Observational data from 21 independent studies, involving a pooled sample of 2273 parents, stepparents and grandparents of children (aged [less than or equal to] 19) with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) were examined. Pearson's r, publication bias and heterogeneity were calculated using random effects modelling. Significant associations were noted between lowered depressive symptoms and positive sources of support, regardless of support type. Parental mental health can be enhanced by strengthening close personal relationships alongside connections with formal support services. Longitudinal research is needed to explore support need and perceived helpfulness over time.

35. The Impact of Bullying Victimization in Early Adolescence on Subsequent Psychosocial and Academic Outcomes across the Adolescent Period: A Systematic Review

Abstract

Bullying is a widespread global issue, with serious consequences for victimized individuals. The current systematic review is the first to explore the consequences of bullying in early adolescence on psychological and academic functioning across the adolescent period. Five databases were examined, yielding 28 relevant studies. Victimized individuals were found to experience negative psychosocial and academic outcomes, including increased depression and anxiety, increased peer rejection, poorer school performance and school connectedness, both over the short term (12 months), and up to 8 years later. Victimized females suffered worse outcomes than victimized males, specifically for symptoms of depression, anxiety and suicidal ideation. Future research should prioritize developing a globally recognized measure of bullying, and designing targeted interventions addressing specific outcomes for victimized females and males.

We show that locally solvable subgroups of PLo(I) are countable. Then for each countable ordered set, we construct a locally solvable subgroup of Thompson's Group F. We develop machinery for understanding embeddings from solvable subgroups into solvable subgroups. Finally, we apply this machinery to show the ordered sets used in our construction are invariant under isomorphisms between the groups constructed. Abstract

The regulatory serine protease, complement factor I (FI), in conjunction with one of its cofactors (FH, C4BP, MCP, or CR1), plays an essential role in controlling complement activity through inactivation of C3b and C4b. The functional impact by missense variants in the CFI gene, particularly those with minor allele frequencies of 0.01% to 0.1%, is infrequently studied. As such, these variants are typically classified as variants of uncertain significance (VUS) when they are identified by clinical testing. Herein, we utilized a minigene splicing assay to assess the functional impact of 36 ultra-rare variants of CFI. These variants were selected based on their minor allele frequencies (MAF) and their association with low-normal FI levels. Four variants lead to aberrant splicing-one 5' consensus splice site (NM_000204.5: c.1429G>C, p. Asp477His) and three exonic changes (c.355G>A, p.Gly119Arg; c.472G>A, p.Gly158Arg; and c.950G>A, p.Arg317Gln)- enabling their reclassification to likely pathogenic (LP) or pathogenic (P) based on ACMG guidelines. Group A Streptococcus (GAS) primary peritonitis is a rare cause of pediatric acute abdomen (sudden onset of severe abdominal pain); only 26 pediatric cases have been reported in the English language literature since 1980. We discuss 20 additional cases of pediatric primary peritonitis caused by GAS among patients at Starship Children's Hospital, Auckland, New Zealand, during 2010-2022. We compare identified cases of GAS primary peritonitis to cases described in the existing pediatric literature. The purpose of this systematic review is to provide a qualitative evaluation of studies investigating biologic response among psoriasis patients with cardiometabolic comorbidities.Methods: A comprehensive review was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Guidelines for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis guidelines to screen for studies including patients with cardiometabolic risk factors receiving biologic therapy for psoriasis. Studies not including a Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) score to evaluate treatment outcomes were not included. All studies underwent quality/bias analysis using the Methodological Index for Non-Randomized Studies (MINORS) scale.Results: Obesity and Body Mass Index (BMI) were the most studied cardiometabolic risk factors. The majority of the studies reported a lower frequency of achieving PASI75 and PASI90 response with increasing BMI/obesity rates. Diabetes and hypertension showed similar findings but were not studied as frequently. Hyperlipidemia and other lipid disorders were less frequently studied.Conclusion: Relationships between cardiometabolic risk factors and lower frequencies of achieving PASI75/90 exist in current literature. This qualitative systematic review reports evidence of lower PASI75 and PASI90 response rates in the presence of cardiometabolic risk factors.Keywords: psoriasis, cardiometabolic, obesity, PASI, hypertension, biologic
