Abstract

BackgroundOral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) with emtricitabine/tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (F/TDF) has high efficacy against HIV-1 acquisition. Seventy-two prospective studies of daily oral F/TDF PrEP were conducted to evaluate HIV-1 incidence, drug resistance, adherence, and bone and renal safety in diverse settings.MethodsHIV-1 incidence was calculated from incident HIV-1 diagnoses after PrEP initiation and within 60 days of discontinuation. Tenofovir concentrations in dried blood spots (DBS), drug resistance, and bone/renal safety indicators were evaluated in a subset of studies.ResultsAmong 17 274 participants, there were 101 cases with new HIV-1 diagnosis (.77 per 100 person-years; 95% confidence interval [CI]: .63-.94). In 78 cases with resistance data, 18 (23%) had M184I or V, 1 (1.3%) had K65R, and 3 (3.8%) had both mutations. Abstract

BackgroundDuring the COVID-19 pandemic, decreased volumes of stroke admissions and mechanical thrombectomy were reported. The study's objective was to examine whether subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) hospitalisations and ruptured aneurysm coiling interventions demonstrated similar declines.MethodsWe conducted a cross-sectional, retrospective, observational study across 6 continents, 37 countries and 140 comprehensive stroke centres. Patients with the diagnosis of SAH, aneurysmal SAH, ruptured aneurysm coiling interventions and COVID-19 were identified by prospective aneurysm databases or by International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, codes. The 3-month cumulative volume, monthly volumes for SAH hospitalisations and ruptured aneurysm coiling procedures were compared for the period before (1 year and immediately before) and during the pandemic, defined as 1 March-31 May 2020. The prior 1-year control period (1 March-31 May 2019) was obtained to account for seasonal variation.FindingsThere was a significant decline in SAH hospitalisations, with 2044 admissions in the 3 months immediately before and 1585 admissions during the pandemic, representing a relative decline of 22.5% (95% CI -24.3% to -20.7%, p

20. Performance, photography, performativity : what performance 'does' in the still image

Abstract

Auslander (2006) states that images generated from performance documentation and practices stemming from performance to camera could be considered ‘performative’ if they are meant to be seen as happening in the ‘now’ they are viewed, with the spectator as the current intended audience. This thesis takes Auslander’s supposition and situates the term performativity within an established academic discourse as a social, political or cultural ‘doing’ and questions what, apart from performing, performance ‘does’ in its transcription to a photographic image. I propose a ‘doing’ occurs because the intentional performance of a given act invokes the power of citation, in turn setting in motion broader cultural references. The contribution to knowledge this thesis makes is the proposition that aspects of the agency of performativity cannot be fully present in the moment of performance, but can be subsequently revealed by the photographic image as it affords the différance [distance/deferral] the spectator requires to consider the action within a wider structural unconsciousness. Originating from a conceptualist tradition of using ‘art as experiment’, the hypothesis is tested heuristically using a practice-based method of performance to camera. This is presented in the manner of autoethnographic fieldwork, which explores the time-based tensions between performance and photography in three different ways. Firstly, through instantaneous performance actions and the subsequent withdrawal of motion in the still image; secondly, the staging of one-off performance interventions and how they are perceived outside of the time and place in which they occurred via the photograph; and lastly, how repetition is used as a visual device to allow the spectator to ‘revisit’ their framework of understanding. By connecting critical reflection of these photographic investigations to theoretical perspectives, each chapter concludes how viewing the performance outside of the live act in the form of a photograph uncovers the ‘doing’ of its performativity. The final conclusion reviews why performativity surpasses the presence/absence binary previously perceived in photographic documentation, and how we might revise our usage of the term ‘performative’ in the area of performance to camera and studies of performance documentation in the light of these discoveries.

32. Categories of Electronic Publications in a College Information System. AIR 1992 Annual Forum Paper.

Abstract

This paper identifies and describes the categories of electronic publications (EPs) in a document-based communication and information system called JIMMY, developed by Queen Margaret College (Edinburgh, Scotland) for use by students and staff in general arts and paramedical courses. The use of computer-mediated communication systems like bulletin boards, electronic mail, and post-coordinate boolean retrieval technologies is discussed, together with user behavior and attitudes toward the system's adoption. A user requirements survey determined that principal categories of EPs that should be displayed included past examination papers, syllabus material, abstracts of articles, timetables, and assignment specifications. Survey reports from 12-month operational trials indicate that from 14 categories of EPs identified for use, course syllabus information was the most popular for viewing on video display screens, with bulletin board interfaces showing preference over post-coordinate boolean retrieval methods. Possible enhancements to the system are listed as well as the main criticisms. It is noted that the system not only proved to be an academic awareness tool, but that it also became a valuable educational resource and teaching tool. (GLR)

Abstract

This study focuses on Song. I intend to establish the aesthetic criteria by which song can be judged, to analyse the power of song to influence people's perceptions, and to examine and illustrate the compositional process. I suggest that the context in which song is written and performed is vital to establishing the aesthetic criteria, and therefore I will analyse the phenomenon of the English folk song revival. Incorporated in this analysis is a consideration of the lifestyle of performers, performance itself, the philosophy of the milieu, and the folk club scene and how it operates. Having established the contextual foundation for song in the English folk song revival I will then analyse the creative process of songwriting through its various but distinct stages. I will specifically focus on creativity and the compositional process as applied to song. This section will be in three parts; a study of four professional songwriters, an analysis of the creative process using myself as a case study and a synopsis of the significant points.

Abstract

In the realm of electrified vehicle development, vehicle simulations employing drive cycle inputs typically span thousands of seconds. Within this time domain, executing inverter motor control simulations with step sizes smaller than 1ms is not practical. To address this challenge, this research proposes a method of modeling electrified vehicles using an inverter efficiency map predicated on DC bus voltage and current. Theoretical analyses have corroborated that pivotal factors—such as collector voltage and current for Insulated-Gate Bipolar Transistors (IGBT) and Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistors (MOSFET) —are dictated by the DC bus voltage and current, provided that the switching frequency and modulation index are fixed. Hence, power electronics simulations of inverters can be conducted at varying DC bus voltages and currents to create efficiency maps for prospective semiconductors. Tests have been performed on the Silicon IGBT IKW50N60DTP and Silicon Carbide MOSFET C3M0015065K. With the inclusion of the developed efficiency maps, a Tesla Model S vehicle model has been constructed and simulated. The simulation results from the combined Urban Dynamometer Driving Schedule (UDDS) and Highway Fuel Economy Test (HFET) drive cycle confirm that the SiC MOSFET-based inverter boasts greater and more consistent efficiency than its Si IGBT counterpart. Abstract

Electronic publishing is the distribution of textual information over computer communications channels for viewing on VDU screens. It has been used increasingly by professionals and academics to connect to single and multiple computer users through electronic mail, bulletin boards and computer conferencing. These have been used at Queen Margaret College, Edinburgh, for on-campus College communications and to link health care lecturers, clinical supervisors, hospital staff and nursing students on clinical placement practice, to an online educational electronic communication and information system. This study is concerned with the organisation and use of electronic publications (EPs) in a college environment. It identifies user requirements and applications of EPs for in-College use, and for remote online use by BA Nursing Studies degree students on clinical placement at the Western General Hospital, Edinburgh. It also analyses user behaviour and attitudes, and discusses the implications for health care education. The study concludes that a range of educational and professional benefits for pre and post-qualified nurses arises from the use of EPs. Computer support for nurse education includes EPs for students' clinical placement practice for log notes, study days, personal objectives and nursing procedures. Advantages for cognition, curriculum development, research, and student centred learning are also identified. Research also formalises a possible nursing knowledge base for the use of EPs in the clinical environment, and shows possible applications of EPs within a model of the nursing process.

Abstract

Objectives Highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) provision to eligible HIV-infected pregnant and post-partum women is critical for optimizing maternal health. We assessed the impact of maternal HAART on HIV-free survival of breastfed infants in Malawi. Methods The post-exposure prophylaxis of infants-Malawi trial (2004-2009) enrolled mothers/infants during labor or immediately post-partum to evaluate 14-week extended infant antiretroviral prophylaxis for preventing HIV transmission through breastfeeding. Mothers meeting national HAART guidelines were referred for therapy. Child HIV-free survival-survival without HIV infection-was compared by maternal HAART status. Results Overall, 3022 mother-infant pairs contributed 4214 infant/person-years (PY) at-risk for HIV infection or death, with 532 events (incidence 12.6/100 PY, 95 % confidence interval [CI] 11.6-13.7). Abstract

Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) is a complication of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection; in the United States, reporting of MIS-C after coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination is required for vaccine safety monitoring. Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine was authorized for children aged 5−11 years on 29 October 2021. Covering a period when approximately 7 million children received vaccine, surveillance for MIS-C ≤ 90 days postvaccination using passive systems identified 58 children with MIS-C and laboratory evidence of past/recent SARS-CoV-2 infection, and 4 without evidence. During a period with extensive SARS-CoV-2 circulation, MIS-C illness in children after COVID-19 vaccination who lacked evidence of SARS-CoV-2 infection was rare (<1 per million vaccinated children).
