Analyzing the groundwater potential zone is a fundamental first step in investigating groundwater resources in arid and semi-arid regions. This study examined the groundwater potential zone of the Fafen-Jerer sub-basin by applying geographic information system (GIS) and remote sensing (RS). The study used ten influencing factors, including geology, geomorphology, slope, soil, lineament density, drainage density, land use, land cover, topographic wetness index, topographic roughness index, and rainfall, to identify potential sites. Based on their effect on groundwater recharge, the sub-class of each influencing factor was identified and evaluated. The weights were determined using the multi-criteria decision-making method’s analytical hierarchy process technique. At the conclusion of the investigation, the region was divided into four potential zones: low, moderate, high, and extremely high. The study region comprises 84% moderate potential zones, 14% high groundwater potential zones, and 2% low and extremely high potential zones. area under the curve (AUC) of the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to evaluate the groundwater potential zone, and the findings show extremely good performance (AUC = 0.87). The study provides recommendations for stakeholders and water management professionals to develop a strategy for water resource management based on the conjunctive use of surface and groundwater.

Research on strategic leadership practices in emerging economies is crucial due to increasing global influence. This study explores strategic leadership by addressing four key research questions using an integration approach. The first three questions are answered through a systematic review, while the fourth is explored through an empirical study. A total of 27 journal articles were selected based on strict inclusion and exclusion criteria, and were analyzed using content analysis, while empirical data were analyzed descriptively. The majority of reviewed literature related the concept of strategic leadership with executives’ functions that have strategic consequences. Whereas factors contributing to ineffective strategic leadership include short-termism, hubris, greed, and unethical behavior. The empirical study revealed that Ethiopian higher education institutions positively view institutional innovativeness, information management, strategic decision-making, and HRM activities. However, priority management, strategic control, ethical leadership, strategic influence, and stakeholder engagement were less favorably regarded. Strategic leadership in emerging economies, including Ethiopian higher education institutions, is shaped by both universal leadership principles and context-specific challenges. To thrive, strategic leaders must balance immediate pressures with long-term organizational vision, focusing on innovation, ethical practices, and robust stakeholder engagement. As well as the study inform leadership development, global business strategies, and supports sustainable economic growth in emerging markets.

Background Poor glycaemic control is the most challenging issue in diabetes care globally. The glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) value is the most standard monitoring parameter for appropriate glycaemic control status.Objective To assess the patterns of glycaemic control and associated factors among patients with diabetes attending medical referral clinics in North-West Ethiopia.Design An institution-based cross-sectional study.Setting This study was conducted in two public hospitals (Felege-Hiwot Comprehensive Specialized Hospital and Tibebe Ghion Specialized Hospital), Amhara National Regional State, North-West Ethiopia.Participants A total of 355 adult patients with diabetes were included in the study using a systematic sampling technique. Patients were recruited from both hospitals proportionally between July and September 2021.Outcome measures Glycaemic control was assessed using HbA1c levels. Data were collected using a checklist and structured questionnaire and analysed using a binary logistic regression model.Results The overall prevalence of poor glycaemic control was 66.2% (95% CI 61.1% to 71%). Age 31–45 years (AOR=0.30, 95% CI 0.12 to 0.75), 46–60 years (AOR=0.12, 95% CI 0.04 to 0.33) and >60 years (AOR=0.09, 95% CI 0.02 to 0.31), lower educational status (AOR=3.48, 95% CI 1.01 to 12.01), type 2 diabetes (AOR=3.36, 95% CI 1.56 to 7.27), poor adherence to antidiabetic drugs (AOR=4.18, 95% CI 1.70 to 10.30), physical inactivity (AOR=4.30, 95% CI 2.11 to 8.76), longer duration of diabetes mellitus (AOR=2.06, 95% CI 1.13 to 3.75) and high body mass index (AOR=3.83, 95% CI 1.31 to 11.19) were associated with poor glycaemic control.Conclusion The prevalence of poor glycaemic control was high. Age, lower educational status, type 2 diabetes, physical inactivity, high body mass index, longer duration of diabetes and poor adherence to antidiabetic drugs were associated with uncontrolled glycaemia.

In this work, lithohydrostratigraphic concepts with fracture density, hydrogeochemical and stable isotopic insights were applied using information from 94 water-supply wells, 188 geoelectrical resistivity, 124 hydrochemistry, and 81 stable isotopic data sets. Study area: Katar and Meki subbasins, Rift Valley Lakes Basin, Ethiopia.Study focus: This research was carried out to characterized the recharge mechanism and quantify the steady-state groundwater balance and its sensitivity to future climate change. A groundwater simulation model was constructed and calibrated using a hydro-geo spatial dataset. Three regional climate models were used to assess the potential impact of changes in future precipitation on the recharge rate and groundwater balance components.New Hydrogeological Insight: Groundwater potential assessment depends on accurate estimation of the recharge rate. Precipitation contributed 11.95% and 11.96% to groundwater recharge in the Katar and Meki subbasins, respectively. The steady-state numerical groundwater model was calibrated and the model performed in the ranges of R2: 0.95–0.99; RMSE: 16.17–25.18; and MAE: 12.69–24.55, demonstrating 'excellent' model performance. In particular, the model exhibited high sensitivity to changes in the recharge rate and horizontal hydraulic conductivity. Future change in precipitation caused a reduction in groundwater potential in the range of 6.24–40.32% by the 2040 s and 2070 s, respectively, in the Katar subbasin. Likewise, the Meki Subbasin will experience a reduction in groundwater potential in the range of 0.29–37.17% by the 2040 s and 2070 s, respectively. These results emphasize how crucial it is for future water resource development initiatives to take into account climate variability for sustainable groundwater development.

Groundwater availability is one of the key anxieties in most semi-arid regions of Ethiopia. The purpose of this study was to investigate the groundwater potential zone map of the alluvial plain of Gambela. The study applied analytic hierarchy process (AHP) models with four different machine learning algorithms: random forest classifier (RFC), gradient boosting classifier (GBC), decision tree classifier (DTC), and K-neighbor classifier (KNC). The features that are used as predictors include geology, geomorphology, slope, soil, lineament density, drainage density, land use and land cover (LULC), normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), topographic wetness index (TWI), topographic roughness index (TRI), and rainfall. The final output of the groundwater potential zone was classified as low, moderate, high, and very high potential zones. The authentication through receiver operating curve (ROC) shows 78.2, 93.4, 92.5, 72.4, and 87.7% values of area under the curve (AUC) for AHP, RFC, GBC, DTC, and KNC, respectively. The results show that RFC and GBC are the best groundwater potential zone (GWPZ) map estimator. The study also shows that rainfall and geomorphology are the primary factors influencing the GWPZ. The outcome might promote improved management alternatives in other areas of the country with a comparable climate. The Ethiopian government has exerted efforts to rehabilitate degraded agricultural lands using a range of sustainable land management (SLM) initiatives to enhance agricultural productivity. One of the key components was improved structural soil and water conservation (SWC) technologies. This study examines the effects of continuous SLM practices on agricultural land productivity, with particular emphasis on SWC technology adoption in Central Ethiopia. The analysis was based on the data collected from 525 sample household surveys in two districts, namely Kewet and Sebeta-hawas. A propensity score matching (PSM) model was used to investigate the effects on treated and non-treated plots. The study findings revealed a substantial and positive effect on treated agricultural plots compared to non-treated ones in the Kewet district. At the same time, the difference was found positive but not significant in the Sebeta-hawas counterpart. The insignificant impacts are justified because SWC efforts focused on constructing structures rather than tailoring them with soil-replenishment and productivity enhancement functions. The important conclusion is that continuous SWC adoption efforts positively impact agricultural productivity; however, its effect is more noticeable when SWC structures are integrated with productivity enhancement functions and applied in low moisture areas. Thus, policymakers and project planners should consider the role of integrating physical SWC structures with soil replenishment and agronomic activities.

This study evaluates the skills of 30 CMIP5 GCMs and the Multimodel Ensemble (MME) in reproducing the characteristics of observed precipitation (Pr), minimum (Tmin), and maximum (Tmax) temperature over the Middle Awash sub-basin (MASB) in Ethiopia. The MME of the climate variables was generated using the simple arithmetic mean method. The entire analysis was performed on the raw historical GCM simulations (before bias correction) and observed data for the periods 1981–2005 based on monthly and annual time series data over the annual and seasonal temporal resolutions. This study considered two approaches. The first one was an evaluation of GCMs employing five statistical performance metrics (SPMs), i.e., mean, CV, PBIAS, RSR, and r. The second approach involves the application of multicriteria decision-making (MCDM) analysis, adopting three SPMs (PBIAS, RSR, and r). The relative weights of the three metrics were determined by the entropy method. Besides, the weighted average and compromise programming techniques were employed to rank and select the best-performing GCMs. The findings from the first approach using five SPMs demonstrate that, for a given variable of interest, a GCM that performs well for one SPM may fail to produce the same for another SPM on the same temporal scale. Likewise, for the same SPM at different resolutions, a GCM may perform well for a one-time scale but poorly for another. These suggested that the results of GCM skills relied mainly on the SPM, time scale, and data formats chosen for analysis. Hence, it is critical to comprehensively evaluate the skill of GCMs using multiple performance metrics over a range of spatial and temporal settings and data formats. In addition, results of the MCDM analysis proved that the ensemble of GCMs, which provide adequate performance in simulating the salient features of Pr, Tmin, and Tmax concomitantly across the MASB, encompass CMCC-CMS, BCC-CSM1.1(m), CMCC-CM, BNU-ESM, CanESM2, and MPI-ESM-MR. However, it was observed that different GCMs performed much differently in characterizing various variables over a range of temporal scales and data formats. The MME also proved its superior potential in duplicating the climate of the study area over several individual GCMs. The overall findings attested that instead of aggregating the ranks from the three variables into one, it is recommended to treat each variable independently while developing a subset of best-performing GCMs for ensembling since each GCM responds differently to each variable under a set of conditions. Finally, the approaches and findings from this study will be valuable input for subsequent climate and hydrologic studies in the study area and beyond.

The main challenge for water resources development as well as food security in arid and semi-arid regions of Ethiopia is the hydroclimatic variability. Groundwater resources are largely the main sources of water supply in such regions, alleviating the pressure of hydroclimatic variability on water resources. The present study delineated the potential groundwater zones in the Shinile sub-basin by using geospatial techniques. The criteria used were: geology, geomorphology, slope, soil, lineament density, drainage density, land use land cover, topographic wetness index, topographic roughness index, and rainfall. The relative weights were given by the analytic hierarchy process. A validation was done using the area under the curve (AUC=0.941) of the receiver operating curve (ROC) from borehole data. The study region was partitioned to low, moderate, and high potential groundwater zones having respectively 1.5%, 43%, and 55% of the total area. The high potential areas are concentrated in the central part where alluvial and lacustrine sediment is the dominant geologic unit. The validation results suggest that the geospatial identification of groundwater potential zones effectively performed well in the study area. This study is very important for water management experts as well as for stakeholders and policymakers in the study region.

This study aims to assess the impact of climate change on the water balance component of the Katar and Meki watersheds of the Central Rift Valley Lakes Basin, Ethiopia. The semi-distributed soil and water assessment tool hydrological model and multiple regional climate model outputs were used to assess climate change impacts on water balance components and stream flow. Future climate scenarios were developed under a representative concentration pathway (RCP 4.5 and 8.5) for the 2040s (2021–2050) and 2070s (2051–2080). The study found that future annual and seasonal rainfall will show increasing and decreasing trends but that they are statistically insignificant. Furthermore, future temperatures show a significant increase in the subbasins. For the applied scenarios, an increasing and decreasing trend of future rainfall and increased temperatures would decrease the water yield by 4.9–15.3% at the Katar subbasin and 6.7–7.4% at the Meki subbasin. Furthermore, annual water yields will increase in the range of 0.38–57.1% and 6.57–49.9% for the Katar and Meki subbasins, respectively. The findings of this study will help basin planners, policymakers, and water resource managers develop appropriate adaptation strategies to mitigate the negative effects of climate change in the rift-bound lake system. HIGHLIGHTS The baseline and future rainfall show increasing and decreasing trends but are statistically not significant.; The selected bias correction methods were significantly improved and add value to the RCMs outputs.; Changes in the climate variables reduce the annual water yield and stream flow under all climate scenarios except RCP 4.5 by 2070.;

Citicoline sodium (CIT) boosts the brain’s secretion of acetylcholine, which aids in membrane regeneration and repair. However, it suffers from poor blood–brain barrier (BBB) permeation, which results in lower levels of CIT in the brain.Purpose: This study targeted to encapsulate CIT into novel nano-platform transbilosomes decorated with hyaluronic acid CIT-HA*TBLs to achieve enhanced drug delivery from the nose to the brain.Methods: A method of thin-film hydration was utilized to prepare different formulae of CIT-TBLs using the Box–Behnken design. The optimized formula was then hyuloranated via integration of HA to form the CIT-HA*TBLs formula. Furthermore, AD induction was performed by aluminum chloride (Alcl3), animals were allocated, and brain hippocampus tissue was isolated for ELISA and qRT-PCR analysis of malondialdehyde (MDA), nuclear factor kappa B (NF-kB), and microRNA-137 (miR-137) coupled with immunohistochemical amyloid-beta (Aβ1– 42) expression and histopathological finding.Results: The hyuloranated CIT-HA*TBLs formula, which contained the following ingredients: PL (300 mg), Sp 60 (43.97 mg), and SDC (20 mg). They produced spherical droplets at the nanoscale (178.94 ± 12.4 nm), had a high entrapment efficiency with 74.92± 5.54%, had a sustained release profile of CIT with 81.27 ± 3.8% release, and had ex vivo permeation of CIT with 512.43± 19.58 μg/cm2. In vivo tests showed that CIT-HA*TBL thermogel dramatically reduces the hippocampus expression of miR-137 and (Aβ1– 42) expression, boosting cholinergic neurotransmission and decreasing MDA and NF-kB production. Furthermore, CIT-HA*TBLs thermogel mitigate histopathological damage in compared to the other groups.Conclusion: Succinctly, the innovative loading of CIT-HA*TBLs thermogel is a prospectively invaluable intranasal drug delivery system that can raise the efficacy of CIT in Alzheimer’s management.Keywords: Alzheimer’s disease, transbilosomes, Box–Behnken design, intranasal drug delivery, brain targeting, in vivo study

The Ethiopian government has made efforts to rehabilitate degraded lands using a range of sustainable land management (SLM) initiatives. One of the key components was the use of improved structural soil and water conservation (SWC) technologies. However, the effectiveness of technology adoption varies greatly among households and abandoning previously accepted measures is a typical occurrence. Thus, this study sought to discover factors influencing smallholder farmers’ decisions to abandon already accepted SWC measures. The analysis was conducted based on data collected from 525 sample households surveyed in two districts in Central Ethiopia. An ordered cumulative logistic (POM) regression model was used to examine variables explaining households’ decision behavior. The study findings have revealed that sampled households were at different adoption stages, i.e., dis-adopters (22%), pilot-level adopters (14%) and adopters (64%). The results from the POM model also show that a range of variables influenced farmers’ dis-adoption decisions. Factors such as awareness about the risks of land degradation, access to training, incentives, land fragmentation, gender, full-time labor size, gentle slope plots, economic returns on investment and post-adoption follow-up were found to substantially influence smallholder farmers’ adoption discontinuance decisions. Thus, policymakers should consider these variables in designing strategies to overcome barriers to SLM practices.

The government of Ethiopia has undertaken several projects to restore degraded farmlands using a variety of sustainable land management (SLM) techniques. One of the critical elements of the program was the rehabilitation of farmlands using physical soil and water conservation (SWC) strategies. This study examines household determinants of continued SWC adoption performances using areas representing a variety of contexts. The analysis was conducted using a binary logit model based on data collected from 525 sample households in two districts, namely Kewet and Sebeta-hawas. Of the study participants, 276 households were from the Kewet district in the Amhara region, and 249 households were from Sebeta-hawas in the Oromia region. The study findings revealed a significant difference between sampled households in the study areas regarding continued adoption performances, i.e. (25%) in the Sebeta-hawas and (41%) in the Kewet districts. Among others, productivity gains, consistent follow-up, sufficient farm labor, livestock holding, assistance-free efforts, the experience of soil erosion risks, and sloppy farm plots provided incentives for households to embrace the already introduced measures. Aside from that, there appeared to be differences in the relative contributions and significance of determinants influencing the likelihood of continued adoption. The important conclusion is that adoption effectiveness may differ under different circumstances and agro-ecosystems. Variables influencing continued adoption are also context-specific. Thus, decision-makers should consider contextual variations in designing policies and strategies that promote adoption continuities and utilizations.

Abstract Background Despite the high economic and mortality burden of chronic kidney disease, studies on survival and predictors of mortality among patients on hemodialysis in Ethiopia especially in the Amhara region are scarce considering their importance to identify some modifiable risk factors for early mortality to improve the patient’s prognosis. So, this study was done to fill the identified gaps. The study aimed to assess survival and predictors of mortality among end-stage renal disease patients on hemodialysis in Amhara regional state, Ethiopia, 2020/2021. Method Institution-based retrospective record review was conducted in Felege Hiwot, Gonder, and Gambi hospitals from March 5 to April 5, 2021. A total of 436 medical records were selected using a simple random sampling technique. A life table was used to estimate probabilities of survival at different time intervals. Multivariable cox regression was used to identify risk factors for mortality. Result Out of the 436 patients 153 (35.1%) had died. The median survival time was 345 days with a mortality rate of 1.89 per 1000 person-days (95%CI (1.62, 2.22)). Patients live in rural residences (AHR = 1.48, 95%CI (1.04, 2.12)), patients whose cause of CKD was hypertension (AHR = 1.49, 95%CI (1.01, 2.23)) and human immune virus (AHR = 2.22, 95%CI (1.41, 3.51)), and patients who use a central venous catheter (AHR = 3.15, 95%CI (2.08, 4.77)) had increased risk of death while staying 4 h on hemodialysis (AHR = 0.43, 95%CI (0.23, 0.80)) decreases the risk of death among chronic kidney disease patients on hemodialysis. Conclusions The overall survival rate and median survival time of chronic kidney disease patients on hemodialysis were low in the Amhara region as compared with other developing Sub–Saharan African counties.

Genital fistula is a devastating health problem due to the stigma associated with constant incontinence and bad-odor. Thus, this study aimed to determine the magnitude of the stigma towards women living with genital fistula in Oromia region, Ethiopia, and to highlight the factors associated with it, identifying potential strategies for corrective interventions.Methods: This quantitative study was conducted among 422 women living with genital fistula in five fistula treatment centers of Oromia region using a cross-sectional study design from August 30, 2019 to February 28, 2020. Data were collected by face-to-face interview using a structured questionnaire, entered into Epi-data version 4.2, and analyzed by SPSS version 23. Bivariate and multivariable logistic regression analysis was done. P-value < 0.05 was used to ascertain statistical significance with an adjusted odds ratio at 95% confidence interval (CI). The results were presented by text and tables.Results: The response rate for this study was 100%. The magnitude of perceived high stigma related to genital fistula was 178 (42.2%). The factors associated with it were the respondents’ father’s educational level of being able to write and read compared to unknown fathers’ educational level (AOR=0.09; 95% CI=0.03– 0.34), and duration of living with a genital fistula of less than 2 years compared to living with a genital fistula for 5 years or more (AOR=0.52; 95% CI=0.31– 0.86).Conclusion: The perceived level of stigma among women living with a genital fistula in Oromia region was significantly high. To reduce the perceived level of stigma and therefore to prevent the severe negative consequences of it, fathers, but also mothers, husbands, family members, and all the persons close to women living with genital fistulas should provide care and psychological support and all the necessary means to strongly encourage them to seek health care quickly, and to make them feel that they are beloved, and that there is hope for a healthy life in their near future.Keywords: stigma, genital fistula, devastating health problem, Oromia region, Ethiopia

Despite its proximity to many research institutions in the country and prevailing environmental and water security challenges, water resources research in the Central Rift Valley of Ethiopia has few decades of history. Research undertaken so far, mainly focus on the lakes' environment and anthropogenic activities in their proximities. Worsening deterioration of the water resources and environmental conditions; and the need to address overlooked but determinant natural and anthropogenic processes spurred a critical review of what has been done so far. This work provides an overview of the history of water research in the central rift valley and tries to reveal research gaps related to surface water-groundwater interaction, water quality, and changing trends in the hydro ecosystem and possible causes. Apart from this, articles dealing with the geological and structural setup of the central rift valley were systematically reviewed to show their control over the hydrologic system. The review work has revealed that although the current state of the central rift valley is a product of anthropogenic and geogenic processes; which are happening within the sub-basin and its adjacent basins that need to be addressed at a higher thematic, spatial, and temporal scopes, there is gap in reviewed research, to address the issue at this level. The forefront environmental challenges and the need for quick fixes, lack of data, and funding are found to be some of the reasons to limit the scope of research activities, mainly to shallow groundwater zones and surface hydrological processes around the lakes. This approach has hindered seeing the bigger picture and resulted in ineffective environmental and natural resources restoration measures and policy decisions.

Land use and land cover (LULC) change and variability are some of the challenges to present-day water resource management. The purpose of this study was to determine LULC and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) fluctuations in western Ethiopia during the last 20 years. The first part of the study used MODIS LULC data for the change analysis, change detection, and spatial and temporal coverage in the study region. In the second part, the study analyzes the NDVI change and its spatial and temporal coverage. In this study, The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) satellite data were applied to determine LULC and NDVI changes over four different periods. Evergreen broadleaf forests, deciduous broadleaf forests, mixed forests, woody savannas, savannas, grasslands, permanent wetlands, croplands, urban and built-up lands, and water bodies are the LULC in the period of analysis. The overall classification accuracy for the classified image from 2001 to 2020 was 85.4% and the overall kappa statistic was 81.2%. The results indicate a substantial increase in woody savannas, deciduous broadleaf, grasslands, permanent wetlands, and mixed forest areas by 119.6%, 57.7% 45.2%, 37%, and 21.3%, respectively, followed by reductions in croplands, water bodies, savannas, and evergreen broadleaf forest by 90.1%, 19.8%, 13.2%, and 4.8%, respectively, for the catchment between 2001 and 2020. The result also showed that the area’s vegetation cover increased by 64% from 2001 to 2022. This study could provide valuable information for water resource and environmental management as well as policy and decision-making.

Objective: This study aimed to assess the risky driving behavior and associated factors among drivers in Debre Tabor town, Ethiopia, 2020. Methods: This study was a mixed type community-based cross-sectional survey of 564 and 11 participants for quantitative and qualitative study by using a self-administered questionnaire and an interview method, respectively, and the analysis was carried out in 2021. Results: Eighty-two-point one percent (82.1%) of drivers were engaged in risky driving behavior. Driving at night, never attending religious events/ceremonies, driving >8 h/day, believing income is insufficient, weak law enforcement, training institutions problem, being Bajaj driver, and being a non-governmental-driver were significantly associated with risky driving behavior. Conclusion: Risky driving behavior was high among drivers. Being non-governmental driver was the protective factor of risky driving behavior however the rest variables were the risk factors for risky driving behavior. To overcome the problem, appropriate law enforcement measures should be taken.

However, in Ethiopia, sexual assaults’ profile was not investigated well, regardless of its social, physical, and psychological impacts on survivors. Hence, this study assessed the survivors’ characteristics, circumstances of the victims, and treatment offered with the view of describing the management process, and service responsiveness.Methods: A descriptive study with 3 years retrospective chart review was conducted in Jimma University Medical Center (JUMC). Samples of 187 charts/medical records were selected using a systematic random sampling technique from the medical unit. The selected survivors’ records were reviewed using a structured checklist. Data were analyzed using SPSS Version 21.0.Results: Out of the 187 cases of sexual assaults during the study period, 67.4% were rape cases. Among these, 58.8% were below 14 years, and 85.6% knew their assailants. Above 30% of the victims were assaulted during the daytime, and 51.9% developed perennial laceration. Threat and physical force were mostly used to coerce victims during the violence. All of the survivors were not investigated for vaginal/anal swab (for sperm analysis), and 96.8% of the victims were not tested for HIV screening. Only 8% of the victims received emergency contraception.Conclusion and Recommendation: Children and adolescents remain the most sexually assaulted group of the population, requiring protection and appropriate medical services to ensure their well-being and reduce their suffering. Appropriate and timely intervention is needed to care for such survivors. The findings have highlighted the need for closer monitoring and better follow-up of the care and support provided in the Medical Center to sexual assault victims.Keywords: sexual assaults, survivors, profile, retrospective, Jimma University Medical Center

BACKGROUND: Malaria is a major disease burden in Ethiopia. Migration can influence malaria transmission dynamics, with individuals relocating from malaria-free highland regions to malarious lowlands potentially facing elevated risks of contracting malaria. Migrants may find it difficult to protect themselves against malaria and have limited access to diagnosis or treatment. Settlers in gold mining sites are one type of migrant and are often neglected in malaria research yet may have particularly high malaria risk. This study was a malaria prevalence survey among settlers in a new gold mining settlement in the highly malarious Gambella Region, Ethiopia. METHODS: n = 590 people were surveyed for demographic information and their knowledge and practices of malaria. Participants were tested for malaria using rapid diagnostic tests and microscopy. Using logistic regressions, the influence of demographic characteristics on malaria infections and bed net access were analysed. A sub-sample of participants was interviewed to comprehend settlement living conditions and healthcare accessibility. RESULTS: The overall prevalence of Plasmodium falciparum was 37.5% (CI 32.4-42.3%). Young children were most likely to have malaria, with individuals aged 15-24 having 67% lower odds (aOR: 0.33; CI 0.13-0.86) of infection compared to those aged 1-4 years old. Meanwhile, those age 25-plus had 75% decreased odds of malaria infection (aOR 0.25; CI 0.10-0.65). Individuals with bed nets had ~ 50% decreased odds of testing positive for falciparum malaria than those reporting having no bed net (aOR: 0.47; CI 0.22-0.97). Individuals who relocated from low elevation with high malaria test positivity rate areas were more prone to testing positive for malaria, as were those residing in densely populated households with multiple malaria cases. Background Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 is a global health care problem with high mortality. Despite early mortality seeming alarming, data regarding factors that lead to increased early mortality of COVID 19 patients is not well-documented yet. The objective of this study was to identify the risk factors of early mortality in patients with confirmed COVID-19 infections. Methodology A case-control study design was employed. With this, a total of 261 COVID-19 deceased recordings were reviewed. The cases of the study were recordings of patients deceased within three days of intensive care unit admission whereas, the rest 187 were recordings of patients who died after three days of admission. Data were collected using an extraction checklist, entered into Epi data version 4.4.2.2, and analyzed by SPSS version 25. After the description, binary logistic regression was run to conduct bivariate and multivariable analyses. Finally, statistical significance was declared at p-value Result The analysis was performed on 261 (87 cases and 174 controls) recordings. About 62.5% of the participants were aged above 65 years and two-thirds were males. The presence of cardiovascular disease (AOR = 4.79, with 95%CI: 1.73, 13.27) and bronchial-asthma (AOR = 6.57; 95% CI: 1.39, 31.13) were found to have a statistically significant association with early mortality. The existence of complications from COVID-19 (AOR = 0.22; 95% CI: 0.07, 0.74) and previous history of COVID-19 infection (AOR = 0.17, 95% CI: 0.04, 0.69) were associated with decreased risk of early mortality. Conclusions Having cardiovascular diseases and bronchial asthma was associated with an increased risk of early mortality. Conversely, the presence of intensive care unit complications and previous history of COVID-19 infection were associated with decreased risk of early mortality.

Abstract Objective Civil servants are disposing individuals to sedentary lifestyle and, may lead to overweight and obesity. Thus, the purpose of the study was to identify factors associated with overweight and obesity among employees in Ethiopia ministries. Result Respondents who were age 45 years and above [AOR = 11.56, 95% CI 3.75–35.56], 35–44 years [AOR = 11.17, 95% CI 3.89–32.06] and 25–34 [AOR = 3.08 95% CI 1.07–8.83] were more likely to be overweight/obesity as compared to those who were in age category of 18–24 years. The study also found that ever alcohol consumption [AOR = 2.27, 95% CI 1.23, 4.16] was associated with increased risk of overweight and obesity as compared to non-consumers. Another risk factor was adult who did not practice ten minutes’ walk per day, more likely to overweight and obesity [AOR = 11.28, 95% CI 5.96–21.36] as compared to the counter parts. Similarly, participants who did not involve physical activity (sport) [AOR = 2.42% 95% CI 1.36–4.30] were 2.42 times more likely to overweight and obesity as compared to those who had physical activity. Sector-wise occupational health program should be developed in work placed to decrease identified risk factors.

Abstract Objective Premarital sex is voluntary sexual intercourse between unmarried persons. Prevalence and factors associated with premarital sexual practice in the study area are lacking. Thus, the aims of this study were to determine the prevalence and to identify factors associated with premarital sexual practice among Debretabor high school youths. Results The prevalence of premarital sex among Debretabor town high school youths was 22.5% of which 63.9% of them were males. Among those high school youths, the majority (60.2%) had their first sexual intercourse at the age of 15–19 years. The main reason for initiation of sexual intercourse was due to fell in love which accounts 48.1%, followed by sexual desire 22.2%. Predictors that are risk for premarital sex were youths who did not attend religious education [AOR = 7.4, 95% CI (3.32, 16.43)], having boy or girl friends [AOR = 9.66, 95% CI (4.80, 19.43)], drinking alcohol every day [AOR = 9.43, 95% CI (2.86, 31.14)] and less than twice a week [AOR = 2.52, 95% CI (1.22, 5.21)], watching pornography film [AOR = 5.15, 95% CI (2.56, 10.37)] and youths came from rural residing families [AOR = 0.51, 95% CI (0.27, 0.96)].

BACKGROUND: Promotion of facial cleanliness is recommended for the elimination of blinding trachoma, largely because of observational studies that have found an association between various measures of facial uncleanliness and trachoma. However, when a field grader assesses both facial cleanliness and trachoma, associations may be biased. Assessment of photographs of the face and conjunctiva by masked graders may provide a less biased estimate of the relationship between facial cleanliness and trachoma. METHODS: Face photographs, conjunctival photographs, and conjunctival swabs were obtained on a random sample of 0-9-year-old children from each of 40 communities in Amhara region, Ethiopia. Face photographs were assessed for the presence of seven measures of an unclean face (i.e., wet nasal discharge, dry nasal discharge, wet ocular discharge, dry ocular discharge, food, dust/dirt, and flies) by three independent masked photo-graders. Conjunctival photographs were similarly graded in a masked fashion for signs of clinically active trachoma. Conjunctival swabs were processed for Chlamydia trachomatis DNA. RESULTS: Of 2073 children with complete data, 808 (39%) had evidence of clinically active trachoma, 150 (7%) had evidence of ocular chlamydia infection, and 2524 (91%) had at least one measure of an unclean face. Dry ocular discharge had the strongest association with clinically active trachoma (age- and sex-adjusted prevalence ratio [PR] 1.4, 95% CI 1.2-1.6) and ocular chlamydia infection (PR 1.9, 95%CI 1.3-2.9), although significant associations were observed between each of the measures of facial uncleanliness and trachoma. CONCLUSIONS: Masked assessment of face and conjunctival photographs confirmed prior observational studies that have noted associations between various measures of facial uncleanliness and trachoma. The causal relationship between facial uncleanliness and trachoma is unclear since many features used to measure facial cleanliness (e.g., ocular discharge, nasal discharge, and flies) could be consequences of antecedent ocular chlamydia infection. Materials and methods: A facility-based cross-sectional study design was conducted among all obstetric caregivers at KTZ in public health facilities from March to April 2017. Data were collected by a pretested, self-administered, and structured questionnaire. A convenient sampling technique was used and descriptive analysis was done to characterize the study population. Background: People living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are facing an increased burden of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) comorbidity. There is, however, paucity of information on the magnitude of HIV-NCDs comorbidity, its associated factors, and how the health system is responding to the double burden in Ethiopia. Objective: To determine the magnitude of comorbidity between HIV and hypertension or diabetes and associated factors among HIV-positive adults receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART) in Bahir Dar city, Ethiopia. Methods: A facility-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 560 randomly selected HIV-positive adults taking ART. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and analyzed using SPSS version 23. Descriptive statistics were used to describe the data. A logistic regression model was fit to identify associated factors with comorbidity of HIV and NCDs. Results: The magnitude of comorbidity was 19.6% (95% confidence interval (CI): 16.0–23.0). Being older (55 and above years) adjusted odds ratio (AOR: 8.5; 95% CI: 3.2–15.1), taking second-line ART regimen containing tenofovir (AOR: 2.7; 95% CI: 1.3–5.6), and increased body mass index (BMI) ≥25 (AOR: 2.7; 95% CI: 1.2–6.5) were the factors associated with comorbidity. Participants reported that they were not managed in an integrated and coordinated manner. Conclusions: The magnitude of comorbidity among adults was high in the study area. Being older, second-line ART regimen and high BMI ≥25 increased the odds of having NCDs among HIV-positive adults. Targeted screening for the incidences of NCDs, addressing modifiable risk factors, and providing integrated care would help to improve the quality of life comorbid patients.

Sorghum bicolor is among the most important cereals globally and a staple crop for smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa. Approximately 20% of sorghum yield is lost annually in Africa due to infestation with the root parasitic weed Striga hermonthica. Existing Striga management strategies are not singularly effective and integrated approaches are needed. Here, we demonstrate the functional potential of the soil microbiome to suppress Striga infection in sorghum. We associate this suppression with microbiome-mediated induction of root endodermal suberization and aerenchyma formation and with depletion of haustorium-inducing factors, compounds required for the initial stages of Striga infection. We further identify specific bacterial taxa that trigger the observed Striga-suppressive traits. Collectively, our study describes the importance of the soil microbiome in the early stages of root infection by Striga and pinpoints mechanisms of Striga suppression. These findings open avenues to broaden the effectiveness of integrated Striga management practices.

Abstract Introduction Measles is an extremely contagious viral disease that can be prevented through vaccination. It is caused by the measles virus and presents with symptoms such as high fever, cough, runny nose, conjunctivitis, and a distinctive rash. Complications may include pneumonia, diarrhoea, and neurological issues. The disease spreads through respiratory droplets and continues to pose a significant public health challenge, especially in Africa, despite vaccination efforts. Objective This systematic review and meta-analysis aim to estimate the pooled vaccine effectiveness of measles vaccines among African children, providing insights into immunization program success and informing policy decisions on vaccine distribution and resource allocation. Methods Following PRISMA guidelines, search was conducted in databases including PubMed/Medline, Science Direct, HINARI, Cochrane/Wiley library, Europe PMC, and grey literatures like Google Scholar up to March 2024. Cross-sectional studies assessed measles vaccine effectiveness in African children aged nine months and above were included. Data was extracted using JBI extraction tool and entered into microsoft excel and analysed via STATA version 20.1 using random effect model. Results From 5295 identified articles, 18 met the inclusion criteria, encompassing 26,470 children from 13 African countries. Abstract Background The Ethiopian government, supported by NORAD, the WHO, and other partners, is decentralizing diabetes care to primary health units via a task-shifting approach. Despite substantial investment, there is still a lack of up-to-date information on diabetes screening, diagnosis, treatment, and medication availability in the country. Objective This study assessed the effects of the NORAD-WHO intervention on diabetes care services, data quality, and the availability of infrastructure and medical supplies in Ethiopia. Methods A quasiexperimental study was conducted across 31 NORAD-WHO project facilities and 62 control facilities in six regions of Ethiopia and Addis Ababa. We used descriptive statistics to assess diabetes screening, diagnosis, treatment services, medication availability, and data quality over 54 months from January 2019 to June 2023. Additionally, we performed a difference-in-differences (DID) regression analysis comparing data from two periods: before the intervention (January to December 2019) and after the intervention (July 2022 to June 2023). Results This study revealed a notable increase in diabetes services, with over 82% of facilities offering screening, early diagnosis, and treatment. Written treatment guidelines are present in three quarters of the facilities. The proportion of trained staff increased from 58% in 2019 to 100% in 2023 across all the evaluated facilities. Intervention facilities had significantly more functional glucometers than did control facilities, averaging four (95% CI: 3.4, 4.6) per month in 2023 compared with 2.5 (95% CI: 2.1, 2.9) in 2019. However, hemoglobin A1C testing remains uncommon. Despite improvements in diabetes service data, issues with missing records, overreporting, and timeliness persist, with an average reporting rate of 99.2% and on-time reporting rate of 51.5%. The NORAD-WHO intervention notably increased the average number of fasting blood sugar tests by 17 per month (95% CI: 12.2–21.8, p = 0.014). Conclusions This midterm evaluation revealed a significant increase in the availability of fasting blood sugar tests in the intervention facilities. Additionally, the availability of medical equipment, laboratory services, and medications has improved over the years. Intervention facilities, with more trained healthcare professionals and better resources, outperform control facilities in screening, diagnosing, treating, and managing high blood sugar levels. Notably, intervention facilities screened more clients for diabetes and showed that patients receiving follow-up care achieved better glycemic control than did those at control facilities. While there has been progress in diabetes service data availability, addressing issues such as missing data, overreporting, and reporting timeliness is essential for further improving the quality of diabetes services. This article explores instructors and students' beliefs toward effective teaching in higher education in Ethiopia. Besides classroom observations, we developed and conducted semi-structured interviews with ten instructors and 12 students at one higher education institution. We followed the data condensation and displayed it for interpreting the data. The findings highlight the qualities of effective teaching and the hope for a change in the current teaching approach to actively participate in the teaching-learning action. This, however, demands a change in designing the course syllabus and assignments and the continuous professional development of the teaching faculty. Given the immense role of the student-centred approach in enhancing students learning, this study explores the role of academic freedom in implementing a student-centred approach. To achieve this objective, the study relies on a qualitative case study research design. In this regard, semi-structured interviews and observation were employed as data gathering tools. The data passed through a series of data analysis processes ranging from data reduction to data verification. The study was conducted at a public university in Ethiopia and recruited ten instructors and twelve students from four randomly selected colleges/institutes belonging to the participating university. The initial analysis resulted in two major themes, each having two subthemes. That is academic freedom at the institutional level for instructors and students and academic freedom at the classroom for instructors and students. Given this, the findings show that the academic freedom of students at the classroom level affects the adoption of student-centred approaches. Students seem to be restrained from freely sharing their concerns, being afraid of the backlash from their instructors and colleagues. Moreover, the instructors in Abay University seem excluded in deciding to implement a student-centred approach in every classroom other than receiving pedagogical training to implement it as a non-negotiable change. These findings call for higher education reforms at national and institutional levels to cultivate an organisational environment that facilitates student-centred approaches.
