In the third APOKASC catalog, we present data for the complete sample of 15,808 evolved stars with APOGEE spectroscopic parameters and Kepler asteroseismology. We used ten independent asteroseismic analysis techniques and anchor our system on fundamental radii derived from Gaia $L$ and spectroscopic $T_{\rm eff}$. We provide evolutionary state, asteroseismic surface gravity, mass, radius, age, and the spectroscopic and asteroseismic measurements used to derive them for 12,418 stars. This includes 10,036 exceptionally precise measurements, with median fractional uncertainties in \nmax, \dnu, mass, radius and age of 0.6\%, 0.6\%, 3.8\%, 1.8\%, and 11.1\% respectively. We provide more limited data for 1,624 additional stars which either have lower quality data or are outside of our primary calibration domain. Using lower red giant branch (RGB) stars, we find a median age for the chemical thick disk of $9.14 \pm 0.05 ({\rm ran}) \pm 0.9 ({\rm sys})$ Gyr with an age dispersion of 1.1 Gyr, consistent with our error model. We calibrate our red clump (RC) mass loss to derive an age consistent with the lower RGB and provide asymptotic GB and RGB ages for luminous stars. We also find a sharp upper age boundary in the chemical thin disk. We find that scaling relations are precise and accurate on the lower RGB and RC, but they become more model dependent for more luminous giants and break down at the tip of the RGB. Stellar age estimates are often calculated by interpolating a star's properties in a grid of models. However, different model grids will give different ages for the same star. We used the open cluster M67 to compare four different model grids: DSEP, GARSTEC, MIST, and YREC. Across all model grids, age estimates for main sequence stars were consistently higher than the accepted age of M67, while age estimates for red giant stars were lower. We compared model-generated age and mass values to external constraints as an additional test of the reliability of each model grid. For stars near solar age and metallicity, we recommend using the DSEP model grid to estimate the ages of main sequence stars and the GARSTEC model grid for red giant stars.

Stars in an open cluster are assumed to have formed from a broadly homogeneous distribution of gas, implying that they should be chemically homogeneous. Quantifying the level to which open clusters are chemically homogeneous can therefore tell us about ISM pollution and gas-mixing in progenitor molecular clouds. Using SDSS-V Milky Way Mapper and SDSS-IV APOGEE DR17 abundances, we test this assumption by quantifying intrinsic chemical scatter in up to 20 different chemical abundances across 26 Milky Way open clusters. We find that we can place 3${\sigma}$ upper limits on open cluster homogeneity within 0.02 dex or less in the majority of elements, while for neutron capture elements, as well as those elements having weak lines, we place limits on their homogeneity within 0.2 dex. Finally, we find that giant stars in open clusters are ~0.01 dex more homogeneous than a matched sample of field stars., Comment: 26 pages, 14 figures

Depending principally on mass, the compact object remnant left behind after a star's life may be a white dwarf (WD), neutron star (NS), or black hole (BH). While we have large samples of each of these remnants, we lack knowledge of the exact conditions separating these outcomes. The boundary between low-mass BHs and massive NSs is particularly poorly understood, as few objects between 2-5 $M_\odot$ are known. To probe this regime, we search the APOGEE DR17 dataset of 657,000 unique stars for binary systems with one stellar component that exhibit large radial velocity shifts over multiple observations. We identify 4751 likely binary systems, and estimate a minimum mass for each system's "invisible companion" under the assumption of tidal synchronization. Two systems have companion masses $\gtrsim$ 2 $M_\odot$, although we conclude that neither are good candidates for possessing a mass-gap NS or BH companions., Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in RNAAS

We present stellar age determinations for 4661 red giant branch stars in the APO-K2 catalog, derived using mass estimates from K2 asteroseismology from the K2 Galactic Archaeology Program and elemental abundances from the Apache Point Galactic Evolution Experiment survey. Our sample includes 17 of the 19 fields observed by K2, making it one of the most comprehensive catalogs of accurate stellar ages across the Galaxy in terms of the wide range of populations spanned by its stars, enabling rigorous tests of Galactic chemical evolution models. Taking into account the selection functions of the K2 sample, the data appear to support the age-chemistry morphology of stellar populations predicted by both inside-out and late-burst scenarios. We also investigate trends in age versus stellar chemistry and Galactic position, which are consistent with previous findings. Comparisons against APOKASC-3 asteroseismic ages show agreement to within ~3%. We also discuss offsets between our ages and spectroscopic ages. Finally, we note that ignoring the effects of $\alpha$-enhancement on stellar opacity (either directly or with the Salaris metallicity correction) results in an ~10% offset in age estimates for the most $\alpha$-enhanced stars, which is an important consideration for continued tests of Galactic models with this and other asteroseismic age samples.

The surface [C/N] ratios of evolved giants are strongly affected by the first dredge-up (FDU) of nuclear-processed material from stellar cores. C and N also have distinct nucleosynthetic origins and serve as diagnostics of mixing and mass loss. We use subgiants to find strong trends in the birth [C/N] with [Fe/H], which differ between the low-$\alpha$ and high-$\alpha$ populations. We demonstrate that these birth trends have a strong impact on the surface abundances after the FDU. This effect is neglected in current stellar models, which use solar-scaled C and N. We map out the FDU as a function of evolutionary state, mass, and composition using a large and precisely measured asteroseismic dataset in first-ascent red giant branch (RGB) and core He-burning, or red clump (RC), stars. We describe the domains where [C/N] is a useful mass diagnostic and find that the RC complements the RGB and extends the range of validity to higher mass. We find evidence for extra mixing on the RGB below [Fe/H]= -0.4, matching literature results, for high-$\alpha$ giants, but there is no clear evidence of mixing in the low-$\alpha$ giants. We report the discovery and characterisation of TIC 350842552 ("Zvrk"), an apparently isolated, rapidly-rotating ($P_\text{rot} \sim 99\ \mathrm{d}$) red giant observed by TESS in its Southern Continuous Viewing Zone. The star's fast surface rotation is independently verified by the use of p-mode asteroseismology, strong periodicity in TESS and ASAS-SN photometry, and measurements of spectroscopic rotational broadening. A two-component fit to APOGEE spectra indicates a coverage fraction of its surface features consistent with the amplitude of the photometric rotational signal. Variations in the amplitude of its photometric modulations over time suggest the evolution of its surface morphology, and therefore enhanced magnetic activity. We further develop and deploy new asteroseismic techniques to characterise radial differential rotation, and find weak evidence for rotational shear within Zvrk's convective envelope. This feature, in combination with such a high surface rotation rate, is incompatible with models of angular-momentum transport in single-star evolution. Spectroscopic abundance estimates also indicate a high lithium abundance, among other chemical anomalies. Taken together, all of these suggest a planet-ingestion scenario for the formation of this rotational configuration, various models for which we examine in detail., Comment: 31 pages, 17 figures. We present a comprehensive characterization of the evolved thermally pulsing asymptotic giant branch (TP-AGB) star R Hydrae, building on the techniques applied in Stellar Evolution in Real Time I (Moln\'ar et al. 2019) to T Ursae Minoris. We compute over 3000 theoretical TP-AGB pulse spectra using MESA and GYRE and combine these with classical observational constraints and nearly 400 years of measurements of R Hya's period evolution to fit R Hya's evolutionary and asteroseismic features. Two hypotheses for the mode driving R Hya's period are considered. Solutions that identify this as the fundamental mode (FM) as well as the first overtone (O1) are consistent with observations. Using a variety of statistical tests, we find that R Hya is most likely driven by the FM and currently occupies the ``power down'' phase of an intermediate pulse (TP ~ 9-16). We predict that its pulsation period will continue to shorten for millennia. Using supplementary calculations from the Monash stellar evolution code, we also find that R Hya is likely to have undergone third dredge-up in its most recent pulse. The MESA+GYRE model grid used in this analysis includes exact solutions to the adiabatic equations of stellar oscillation for the first 10 radial-order pressure modes for every time step in every evolutionary track. The grid is fully open-source and packaged with a data visualization application. Stars formed with initial mass over 50 Msun are very rare today, but they are thought to be more common in the early universe. The fates of those early, metal-poor, massive stars are highly uncertain. Most are expected to directly collapse to black holes, while some may explode as a result of rotationally powered engines or the pair-creation instability. We present the chemical abundances of J0931+0038, a nearby low-mass star identified in early followup of SDSS-V Milky Way Mapper, which preserves the signature of unusual nucleosynthesis from a massive star in the early universe. J0931+0038 has relatively high metallicity ([Fe/H] = -1.76 +/- 0.13) but an extreme odd-even abundance pattern, with some of the lowest known abundance ratios of [N/Fe], [Na/Fe], [K/Fe], [Sc/Fe], and [Ba/Fe]. The implication is that a majority of its metals originated in a single extremely metal-poor nucleosynthetic source. An extensive search through nucleosynthesis predictions finds a clear preference for progenitors with initial mass > 50 Msun, making J0931+0038 one of the first observational constraints on nucleosynthesis in this mass range. However the full abundance pattern is not matched by any models in the literature. J0931+0038 thus presents a challenge for the next generation of nucleosynthesis models and motivates study of high-mass progenitor stars impacted by convection, rotation, jets, and/or binary companions. The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) is one of the largest international astronomy organizations. We present demographic data based on surveys of its members from 2014, 2015 and 2016, during the fourth phase of SDSS (SDSS-IV). We find about half of SDSS-IV collaboration members were based in North America, a quarter in Europe, and the remainder in Asia and Central and South America. Overall, 26-36% are women (from 2014 to 2016), up to 2% report non-binary genders. 11-14% report that they are racial or ethnic minorities where they live. The fraction of women drops with seniority, and is also lower among collaboration leadership. Men in SDSS-IV were more likely to report being in a leadership role, and for the role to be funded and formally recognized. SDSS-IV collaboration members are twice as likely to have a parent with a college degree, than the general population, and are ten times more likely to have a parent with a PhD. This trend is slightly enhanced for female collaboration members. Despite this, the fraction of first generation college students (FGCS) is significant (31%). This fraction increased among collaboration members who are racial or ethnic minorities (40-50%), and decreased among women (15-25%). SDSS-IV implemented many inclusive policies and established a dedicated committee, the Committee on INclusiveness in SDSS (COINS). More than 60% of the collaboration agree that the collaboration is inclusive; however, collaboration leadership more strongly agree with this than the general membership. In this paper, we explain these results in full, including the history of inclusive efforts in SDSS-IV. We conclude with a list of suggested recommendations based on our findings, which can be used to improve equity and inclusion in large astronomical collaborations, which we argue is not only moral, but will also optimize their scientific output., Comment: 30 pages, 9 figures, accepted in PASP

The success of galactic archaeology and the reconstruction of the formation history of our galaxy critically relies on precise ages for large populations of stars. For evolved stars in the red clump and red giant branch, the carbon to nitrogen ratio ([C/N]) has recently been identified as a powerful diagnostic of mass and age that can be applied to stellar samples from spectroscopic surveys such as SDSS/APOGEE. Here, we show that at least 10\% of red clump stars and %$\approx 10\%$ of red giant branch stars deviate from the standard relationship between [C/N] and mass. {We use the APOGEE-\kepler\ (APOKASC) overlap sample to show that binary interactions are %the majority contributors to these responsible for the majority of these outliers and that stars with %any indicators of current or previous binarity should be excluded from galactic archaeology analyses that rely on [C/N] abundances to infer stellar masses. The recent NASA TESS mission has the potential to increase the available asteroseismic sample dramatically, but its precision and accuracy have yet to be confirmed. To date, NASA's Kepler mission has been considered the gold standard for asteroseismic samples, despite data only being available for a small portion of the sky. TESS's observations cover the whole sky, and previous work has identified 158,000 potential red giant oscillators. Using APOGEE, which is calibrated to the asteroseismic scale of the Kepler data, we show that seismology from TESS is calibrated to the Kepler scale to better than 5% for about 90% of red giants, and has only slight trends with mass, metallicity, and surface gravity. We therefore conclude that current TESS seismic results can already be used for galactic archaeology, and future results are likely to be highly transformational to our understanding., Comment: Accepted for publication in RNAAS

Asteroseismology has transformed stellar astrophysics. Red giant asteroseismology is a prime example, with oscillation periods and amplitudes that are readily detectable with time-domain space-based telescopes. These oscillations can be used to infer masses, ages and radii for large numbers of stars, providing unique constraints on stellar populations in our galaxy. The cadence, duration, and spatial resolution of the Roman galactic bulge time-domain survey (GBTDS) are well-suited for asteroseismology and will probe an important population not studied by prior missions. We identify photometric precision as a key requirement for realizing the potential of asteroseismology with Roman. A precision of 1 mmag per 15-min cadence or better for saturated stars will enable detections of the populous red clump star population in the Galactic bulge. If the survey efficiency is better than expected, we argue for repeat observations of the same fields to improve photometric precision, or covering additional fields to expand the stellar population reach if the photometric precision for saturated stars is better than 1 mmag. Asteroseismology is relatively insensitive to the timing of the observations during the mission, and the prime red clump targets can be observed in a single 70 day campaign in any given field. Complementary stellar characterization, particularly astrometry tied to the Gaia system, will also dramatically expand the diagnostic power of asteroseismology. The orders of magnitude variation in lithium abundances of evolved stars have long been a puzzle. Diluted signals, ambiguous evolutionary states and unknown masses have made it challenging to both map the expected lithium signals and explain the anomalously lithium-rich stars. We show here using a set of asteroseismically characterized evolved stars that the base lithium abundance in red giant stars is mass dependent, with higher mass stars having higher `normal' lithium abundances, while highly lithium enhanced stars may cluster around 0.8 or 1.8 M$_\odot$. We confirm previous studies that have shown that lithium enhancement and rapid rotation are often coincident, but find that the actual correlation between lithium abundance and the rotation rate, whether surface rotation, internal rotation, or radial differential rotation, is weak. Our data support previous assertions that most lithium rich giants are in the core-helium burning phase. We also note a tentative correlation between the highest lithium abundances and unusual carbon to nitrogen ratios, which is suggestive of binary interactions, though we find no simple correlation between lithium richness and indicators of binarity., Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in AJ

When main-sequence stars expand into red giants, they are expected to engulf close-in planets. Until now, the absence of planets with short orbital periods around post-expansion, core-helium-burning red giants has been interpreted as evidence that short-period planets around Sun-like stars do not survive the giant expansion phase of their host stars. Here we present the discovery that the giant planet 8 Ursae Minoris b orbits a core-helium-burning red giant. At a distance of only 0.5 au from its host star, the planet would have been engulfed by its host star, which is predicted by standard single-star evolution to have previously expanded to a radius of 0.7 au. Given the brief lifetime of helium-burning giants, the nearly circular orbit of the planet is challenging to reconcile with scenarios in which the planet survives by having a distant orbit initially. Instead, the planet may have avoided engulfment through a stellar merger that either altered the evolution of the host star or produced 8 Ursae Minoris b as a second-generation planet. This system shows that core-helium-burning red giants can harbour close planets and provides evidence for the role of non-canonical stellar evolution in the extended survival of late-stage exoplanetary systems., Comment: Published in Nature on 28 June 2023. Stellar ages are critical for understanding the temporal evolution of a galaxy. We calculate the ages of over 6000 red giant branch stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) observed with SDSS-IV / APOGEE-S. Ages are derived using multi-band photometry, spectroscopic parameters (T$_\text{eff}$, $\log{g}$, [Fe/H], and [$\alpha$/Fe]) and stellar isochrones and the assumption that the stars lie in a thin inclined plane to get accurate distances. The isochrone age and extinction are varied until a best match is found for the observed photometry. We perform validation using the APOKASC sample, which has asteroseismic masses and accurate ages, and find that our uncertainties are $\sim$20% and range from $\sim$1$-$3 Gyr for the calculated age values. Here we present the LMC age map as well as the age-radius relation and an accurate age-metallicity relation (AMR). The age map and age-radius relation reveal that recent star formation in the galaxy was more centrally located and that there is a slight dichotomy between the north and south with the northern fields being slightly younger. The northern fields that cover a known spiral arm have median ages of $\gtrsim$ 2 Gyr, which is the time when an interaction with the SMC is suggested to have happened. The AMR is mostly flat especially for older ages although recently (about 2.0-2.5 Gyr ago) there is an increase in the median [Fe/H]. We present a catalog of fundamental stellar properties for 7,673 evolved stars, including stellar radii and masses, determined from the combination of spectroscopic observations from the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE), part of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV (SDSS), and asteroseismology from K2. The resulting APO-K2 catalog provides spectroscopically derived temperatures and metallicities, asteroseismic global parameters, evolutionary states, and asteroseismically-derived masses and radii. Additionally, we include kinematic information from \textit{Gaia}. We investigate the multi-dimensional space of abundance, stellar mass, and velocity with an eye toward applications in Galactic archaeology. The APO-K2 sample has a large population of low metallicity stars ($\sim$288 at [M/H] $\leq$ $-$1), and their asteroseismic masses are larger than astrophysical estimates. We argue that this may reflect offsets in the adopted fundamental temperature scale for metal-poor stars rather than metallicity-dependent issues with interpreting asteroseismic data. We characterize the kinematic properties of the population as a function of $\alpha$-enhancement and position in the disk and identify those stars in the sample that are candidate components of the \textit{Gaia-Enceladus} merger. We review the application of the one-dimensional Mixing Length Theory (MLT) model of convection in stellar interiors and low-mass stellar evolution. We summarize the history of MLT, present a derivation of MLT in the context of the 1D stellar structure equations, and discuss the physical regimes in which MLT is relevant. We review attempts to improve and extend the formalism, including to higher dimensions. We discuss the interactions of MLT with other modeling physics and demonstrate the impact of introducing variations in the convective mixing length, {\alpha}MLT, on stellar tracks and isochrones. We summarize the process of performing a solar calibration of {\alpha}MLT and the state-of-the-art on calibrations to non-solar targets. We discuss the scientific implications of changing the mixing length, using recent analyses as demonstration. Rapidly rotating red giant stars are astrophysically interesting but rare. In this paper we present a catalog of 3217 active red giant candidates in the APOGEE DR16 survey. We use a control sample in the well-studied Kepler fields to demonstrate a strong relationship between rotation and anomalies in the spectroscopic solution relative to typical giants. Stars in the full survey with similar solutions are identified as candidates. We use vsin\textiti measurements to confirm 50+/- 1.2% of our candidates as definite rapid rotators, compared to 4.9+/-0.2% in the Kepler control sample. In both the Kepler control sample and a control sample from DR16, we find that there are 3-4 times as many giants rotating with 5 < vsini < 10 km s$^{-1}$ compared to vsini > 10 km s$^{-1}$, the traditional threshold for anomalous rotation for red giants. The vast majority of intermediate rotators are not spectroscopically anomalous. We use binary diagnostics from APOGEE and \textit{Gaia} to infer a binary fraction of 73+/-2.4%. We identify a significant bias in the reported metallicity for candidates with complete spectroscopic solutions, with median offsets of 0.37 dex in [M/H] from a control sample. As such, up to 10% of stars with reported [M/H]<-1 are not truly metal poor. Finally, we use Gaia data to identify a sub-population of main sequence photometric binaries erroneously classified as giants., Comment: 17 pages, 15 figures submitted to MNRAS

The eighteenth data release of the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys (SDSS) is the first one for SDSS-V, the fifth generation of the survey. SDSS-V comprises three primary scientific programs, or "Mappers": Milky Way Mapper (MWM), Black Hole Mapper (BHM), and Local Volume Mapper (LVM). This data release contains extensive targeting information for the two multi-object spectroscopy programs (MWM and BHM), including input catalogs and selection functions for their numerous scientific objectives. We describe the production of the targeting databases and their calibration- and scientifically-focused components. DR18 also includes ~25,000 new SDSS spectra and supplemental information for X-ray sources identified by eROSITA in its eFEDS field. We present updates to some of the SDSS software pipelines and preview changes anticipated for DR19. We also describe three value-added catalogs (VACs) based on SDSS-IV data that have been published since DR17, and one VAC based on the SDSS-V data in the eFEDS field., Comment: Accepted to ApJS

It has long been understood that the light curve of a transiting planet constrains the density of its host star. That fact is routinely used to improve measurements of the stellar surface gravity and has been argued to be an independent check on the stellar mass. Here we show how the stellar density can also dramatically improve the precision of the radius and effective temperature of the star. This additional constraint is especially significant when we properly account for the 4.2% radius and 2.0% temperature systematic errors inherited from photometric zero-points, model atmospheres, interferometric calibration, and extinction. In the typical case, we can constrain stellar radii to 3% and temperatures to 1.75% with our evolutionary-model-based technique. In the best real-world cases, we can infer radii to 1.6% and temperatures to 1.1% -- well below the systematic measurement floors -- which can improve the precision in the planetary parameters by a factor of two. We explain in detail the mechanism that makes it possible and show a demonstration of the technique for a near-ideal system, WASP-4. We also show that both the statistical and systematic uncertainties in the parallax from Gaia DR3 are often a significant component of the uncertainty in $L_*$ and must be treated carefully. In this paper, we report the potential detection of a nonmonotonic radial rotation profile in a low-mass lower-luminosity giant star. For most low- and intermediate-mass stars, the rotation on the main sequence seems to be close to rigid. As these stars evolve into giants, the core contracts and the envelope expands, which should suggest a radial rotation profile with a fast core and a slower envelope and surface. KIC 9267654, however, seems to show a surface rotation rate that is faster than its bulk envelope rotation rate, in conflict with this simple angular momentum conservation argument. We improve the spectroscopic surface constraint, show that the pulsation frequencies are consistent with the previously published core and envelope rotation rates, and demonstrate that the star does not show strong chemical peculiarities. We discuss the evidence against any tidally interacting stellar companion. Finally, we discuss the possible origin of this unusual rotation profile, including the potential ingestion of a giant planet or unusual angular momentum transport by tidal inertial waves triggered by a close substellar companion, and encourage further observational and theoretical efforts., Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures, submitted to AAS Journals

One goal of KITP programs is to increase diversity in the next generation of scientists. In this analysis, we examine gender trends in authorship of papers generated as a result of the KITP program \textit{Probes of Transport in Stars}, which ran from October 11th, 2021 to December 17th, 2021. While 38\% of workshop participants were women, only 19\% of publications produced between December 1st, 2021 and June 3rd, 2022 had female first-authors. Further, of these early publications, 61\% had all-male author lists. Among publications resulting from the KITP program, the proportions of both male first-author papers and papers with all-male author lists are higher than predicted by models that take into account the gender distribution of the KITP participants. These results motivate more thorough investigations of collaboration networks at scientific conferences and workshops. Importantly, they also suggest that programs, conferences, and workshops of any kind need to take steps beyond those implemented in this KITP program to enable more diverse collaborations and address gender disparities in science., Comment: submitted to PASP. The abundances of mixing--sensitive elements including lithium, [C/N], and 12C/13C are known to change near the red giant branch bump. The explanation most often offered for these alterations is double diffusive thermohaline mixing in the stellar interior. In this analysis, we investigate the ability of thermohaline mixing to explain the observed timing of these chemical depletion events. Recent observational measurements of lithium and [C/N] show that the abundance of lithium decreases before the abundance of [C/N], whereas numerical simulations of the propagation of the thermohaline mixing region computed with MESA show that the synthetic abundances drop simultaneously. We therefore conclude that thermohaline mixing alone cannot explain the distinct events of lithium depletion and [C/N] depletion, as the simultaneity predicted by simulations is not consistent with the observation of separate drops. Observations show an almost ubiquitous presence of extra mixing in low-mass upper giant branch stars. The most commonly invoked explanation for this is thermohaline mixing. One-dimensional stellar evolution models include various prescriptions for thermohaline mixing, but the use of observational data directly to discriminate between thermohaline prescriptions has thus far been limited. Here, we propose a new framework to facilitate direct comparison: Using carbon-to-nitrogen measurements from the SDSS-IV APOGEE survey as a probe of mixing and a fluid parameter known as the reduced density ratio from one-dimensional stellar evolution programs, we compare the observed amount of extra mixing on the upper giant branch to predicted trends from three-dimensional fluid dynamics simulations. Using this method, we are able to empirically constrain how mixing efficiency should vary with the reduced density ratio. We find the observed amount of extra mixing is strongly correlated with the reduced density ratio and that trends between reduced density ratio and fundamental stellar parameters are robust across choices for modeling prescription. We show that stars with available mixing data tend to have relatively low density ratios, which should inform the regimes selected for future simulation efforts. Finally, we show that there is increased mixing at low reduced density ratios, which is consistent with current hydrodynamical models of thermohaline mixing. Stellar rotation is a complex function of mass, metallicity, and age and can be altered by binarity. To understand the importance of these parameters in main sequence stars, we have assembled a sample of observations that spans a range of these parameters using a combination of observations from The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) and the Kepler Space Telescope. We find that while we can measure rotation periods and identify other classes of stellar variability (e.g., pulsations) from TESS lightcurves, instrument systematics prevent the detection of rotation signals longer than the TESS orbital period of 13.7 days. Due to this detection limit, we also utilize rotation periods constrained using rotational velocities measured by the APOGEE spectroscopic survey and radii estimated using the Gaia mission for both TESS and Kepler stars. From these rotation periods, we 1) find we can track rotational evolution along discrete mass tracks as a function of stellar age, 2) find we are unable to recover trends between rotation and metallicity that were observed by previous studies, and 3) note that our sample reveals that wide binary companions do not affect rotation, while close binary companions cause stars to exhibit more rapid rotation than single stars., Comment: 19 pages, 13 figures, Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

Large scale surveys open the possibility to investigate Galactic evolution both chemically and kinematically, however, reliable stellar ages remain a major challenge. Detailed chemical information provided by high-resolution spectroscopic surveys of the stars in clusters can be used as a means to calibrate recently developed chemical tools for age-dating field stars. Using data from the Open Cluster Abundances and Mapping (OCCAM) survey, based on the SDSS/APOGEE-2 survey, we derive a new empirical relationship between open cluster stellar ages and the carbon-to-nitrogen ([C/N]) abundance ratios for evolved stars, primarily those on the red giant branch. With this calibration, [C/N] can be used a chemical clock for evolved field stars to investigate the formation and evolution of different parts of our Galaxy. We explore how mixing effects at different stellar evolutionary phases, like the red clump, affect the derived calibration. We have established the [C/N]-age calibration for APOGEE DR17 giant star abundances to be $\log[Age({\rm yr})]_{\rm DR17} = 10.14 \, (\pm 0.08) + 2.23\,(\pm 0.19) \, {\rm [C/N]}$, usable for $8.62 \leq \log(Age[{\rm yr}]) \leq 9.82$, derived from a uniform sample of 49 clusters observed as part of APOGEE DR17 applicable primarily to metal-rich, thin and thick disk giant stars. This paper documents the seventeenth data release (DR17) from the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys; the fifth and final release from the fourth phase (SDSS-IV). DR17 contains the complete release of the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey, which reached its goal of surveying over 10,000 nearby galaxies. The complete release of the MaNGA Stellar Library (MaStar) accompanies this data, providing observations of almost 30,000 stars through the MaNGA instrument during bright time. DR17 also contains the complete release of the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment 2 (APOGEE-2) survey which publicly releases infra-red spectra of over 650,000 stars. The main sample from the Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS), as well as the sub-survey Time Domain Spectroscopic Survey (TDSS) data were fully released in DR16. New single-fiber optical spectroscopy released in DR17 is from the SPectroscipic IDentification of ERosita Survey (SPIDERS) sub-survey and the eBOSS-RM program. Along with the primary data sets, DR17 includes 25 new or updated Value Added Catalogs (VACs). This paper concludes the release of SDSS-IV survey data. The chemical abundances of planet-hosting stars offer a glimpse into the composition of planet-forming environments. To further understand this connection, we make the first ever measurement of the correlation between planet occurrence and chemical abundances for ten different elements (C, Mg, Al, Si, S, K, Ca, Mn, Fe, and Ni). Leveraging data from the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) and Gaia to derive precise stellar parameters ($\sigma_{R_\star}\approx2.3\%$, $\sigma_{M_\star}\approx4.5\%$) for a sample of 1,018 Kepler Objects of Interest, we construct a sample of well-vetted Kepler planets with precisely measured radii ($\sigma_{R_p}\approx3.4\%$). After controlling for biases in the Kepler detection pipeline and the selection function of the APOGEE survey, we characterize the relationship between planet occurrence and chemical abundance as the number density of nuclei of each element in a star's photosphere raised to a power, $\beta$. $\beta$ varies by planet type, but is consistent within our uncertainties across all ten elements. For hot planets ($P$ = 1-10 days), an enhancement in any element of 0.1 dex corresponds to an increased occurrence of $\approx$20% for Super-Earths ($R_p=1-1.9R_\oplus$) and $\approx$60% for Sub-Neptunes ($R_p=1.9-4R_\oplus$). Trends are weaker for warm ($P$ = 10-100 days) planets of all sizes and for all elements, with the potential exception of Sub-Saturns ($R_p=4-8R_\oplus$). We measure rotational broadening in spectra taken by the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) survey to characterise the relationship between stellar multiplicity and rotation. We create a sample of 2786 giants and 24 496 dwarfs with stellar parameters and multiple radial velocities from the APOGEE pipeline, projected rotation speeds \vsini\ determined from our own pipeline, and distances, masses, and ages measured by Sanders \& Das. We use the statistical distribution of the maximum shift in the radial velocities, \drvm, as a proxy for the close binary fraction to explore the interplay between stellar evolution, rotation, and multiplicity. Assuming that the minimum orbital period allowed is the critical period for Roche Lobe overflow and rotational synchronization, we calculate theoretical upper limits on expected \vsini\ and \drvm\ values. These expectations agree with the positive correlation between the maximum \drvm\ and \vsini\ values observed in our sample as a function of \logg. We find that the fast rotators in our sample have a high occurrence of short-period ($\log(P/\text{d})\lesssim 4$) companions. We also find that old, rapidly-rotating main sequence stars have larger completeness-corrected close binary fractions than their younger peers. Furthermore, rapidly-rotating stars with large \drvm\ consistently show differences of 1-10 Gyr between the predicted gyrochronological and measured isochronal ages. These results point towards a link between rapid rotation and close binarity through tidal interactions. APOGEE-2 is a dual-hemisphere, near-infrared (NIR), spectroscopic survey with the goal of producing a chemo-dynamical mapping of the Milky Way Galaxy. The targeting for APOGEE-2 is complex and has evolved with time. In this paper, we present the updates and additions to the initial targeting strategy for APOGEE-2N presented in Zasowski et al. (2017). These modifications come in two implementation modes: (i) "Ancillary Science Programs" competitively awarded to SDSS-IV PIs through proposal calls in 2015 and 2017 for the pursuit of new scientific avenues outside the main survey, and (ii) an effective 1.5-year expansion of the survey, known as the Bright Time Extension, made possible through accrued efficiency gains over the first years of the APOGEE-2N project. For the 23 distinct ancillary programs, we provide descriptions of the scientific aims, target selection, and how to identify these targets within the APOGEE-2 sample. The Bright Time Extension permitted changes to the main survey strategy, the inclusion of new programs in response to scientific discoveries or to exploit major new datasets not available at the outset of the survey design, and expansions of existing programs to enhance their scientific success and reach. After describing the motivations, implementation, and assessment of these programs, we also leave a summary of lessons learned from nearly a decade of APOGEE-1 and APOGEE-2 survey operations. We present the first near all-sky yield of oscillating red giants from the prime mission data of NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). We apply machine learning towards long-cadence TESS photometry from the first data release by the MIT Quick-Look Pipeline to automatically detect the presence of red giant oscillations in frequency power spectra. The detected targets are conservatively vetted to produce a total of 158,505 oscillating red giants, which is an order of magnitude increase over the yield from Kepler and K2 and a lower limit to the possible yield of oscillating giants across TESS's nominal mission. For each detected target, we report effective temperatures and radii derived from colors and Gaia parallaxes, as well as estimates of their frequency at maximum oscillation power. Using our measurements, we present the first near all-sky Gaia-asteroseismology mass map, which shows global structures consistent with the expected stellar populations of our Galaxy. To demonstrate the strong potential of TESS asteroseismology for Galactic archeology even with only one month of observations, we identify 354 new candidates for oscillating giants in the Galactic halo, display the vertical mass gradient of the Milky Way disk, and visualize correlations of stellar masses with kinematic phase space substructures, velocity dispersions, and $\alpha$-abundances., Comment: 23 pages, 20 figures. The vast majority of Milky Way stellar halo stars were likely accreted from a small number ($\lesssim$3) of relatively large dwarf galaxy accretion events. However, the timing of these events is poorly constrained, relying predominantly on indirect dynamical mixing arguments or imprecise age measurements of stars associated with debris structures. Here, we aim to infer robust stellar ages for stars associated with galactic substructures to more directly constrain the merger history of the Galaxy. By combining kinematic, asteroseismic, and spectroscopic data where available, we infer stellar ages for a sample of 10 red giant stars that were kinematically selected to be associated with the stellar halo, a subset of which are associated with the Gaia-Enceladus-Sausage halo substructure, and compare their ages to 3 red giant stars in the Galactic disk. Despite systematic differences in both absolute and relative ages determined by this work, age rankings of stars in this sample are robust. Passing the same observable inputs to multiple stellar age determination packages, we measure a weighted average age for the Gaia-Enceladus-Sausage stars in our sample of 8 $\pm$ 3 (stat.) $\pm$ 1 (sys.) Gyr. We also determine hierarchical ages for the populations of Gaia-Enceladus-Sausage, in situ halo and disk stars, finding a Gaia-Enceladus-Sausage population age of 8.0$^{+3.2}_{-2.3}$ Gyr. Although we cannot distinguish hierarchical population ages of halo or disk structures with our limited data and sample of stars, this framework should allow distinct characterization of Galactic substructures using larger stellar samples and additional data available in the near future., Comment: 28 pages, 21 figures. Studies using asteroseismic ages and rotation rates from star-spot rotation have indicated that standard age-rotation relations may break down roughly half-way through the main sequence lifetime, a phenomenon referred to as weakened magnetic braking. While rotation rates from spots can be difficult to determine for older, less active stars, rotational splitting of asteroseismic oscillation frequencies can provide rotation rates for both active and quiescent stars, and so can confirm whether this effect really takes place on the main sequence. We obtained asteroseismic rotation rates of 91 main sequence stars showing high signal-to-noise modes of oscillation. Using these new rotation rates, along with effective temperatures, metallicities and seismic masses and ages, we built a hierarchical Bayesian mixture model to determine whether the ensemble more closely agreed with a standard rotational evolution scenario, or one where weakened magnetic braking takes place. The weakened magnetic braking scenario was found to be 98.4% more likely for our stellar ensemble, adding to the growing body of evidence for this stage of stellar rotational evolution. Given their location on the Hertzsprung-Russell (HR) diagram, thoroughly characterized subgiant stars can place stringent constraints on a wide range of astrophysical problems. Accordingly, they are prime asteroseismic targets for the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) mission. In this work, we infer stellar properties for a sample of 347 subgiants located in the TESS Continuous Viewing Zones (CVZs), which we select based on their likelihood of showing asteroseismic oscillations. We investigate how well they can be characterized using classical constraints (photometry, astrometry), and validate our results using spectroscopic values. We derive luminosities, effective temperatures, and radii with mean 1$\sigma$ random (systematic) uncertainties of 4.5% (2%), 33 K (60 K), and 2.2% (2%), as well as more model-dependent quantities such as surface gravities, masses, and ages. We use our sample to demonstrate that subgiants are ideal targets for mass and age determination based on HR diagram location alone, discuss the advantages of stellar parameters derived from a detailed characterization over widely available catalogs, show that the generally used 3D extinction maps tend to overestimate the extinction for nearby stars (distance $\lesssim$ 500 pc), and find a correlation that supports the rotation-activity connection in post main sequence stars. The projected stellar rotational velocity ($v \sin i$) is critical for our understanding of processes related to the evolution of angular momentum in pre-main sequence stars. We present $v \sin i$ measurements of high-resolution infrared and optical spectroscopy for 70 pre-main sequence stars in the Taurus-Auriga star-forming region, in addition to effective temperatures measured from line-depth ratios, and stellar rotation periods determined from optical photometry. From the literature, we identified the stars in our sample that show evidence of residing in circumstellar disks or multiple systems. The comparison of infrared $v \sin i$ measurements calculated using two techniques shows a residual scatter of $\sim$ 1.8 km s$^{-1}$, defining a typical error floor for the $v \sin i$ of pre-main sequence stars from infrared spectra. A comparison of the $v \sin i$ distributions of stars with and without companions shows that binaries/multiples typically have a higher measured $v \sin i$, which may be caused by contamination by companion lines, shorter disk lifetimes in binary systems, or tidal interactions in hierarchical triples. A comparison of optical and infrared $v \sin i$ values shows no significant difference regardless of whether the star has a disk or not, indicating that CO contamination from the disk does not impact $v \sin i$ measurements above the typical $\sim$ 1.8 km s$^{-1}$ error floor of our measurements. Finally, we observe a lack of a correlation between the $v \sin i$, presence of a disk, and H-R diagram position, which indicates a complex interplay between stellar rotation and evolution of pre-main sequence stars., Comment: 20 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Our understanding of the properties and demographics of exoplanets critically relies on our ability to determine fundamental properties of their host stars. The advent of Gaia and large spectroscopic surveys has now made it in principle possible to infer properties of individual stars, including most exoplanet hosts, to very high precision. However, we show that in practice, such analyses are limited both by uncertainties in the fundamental scale, and by uncertainties in our models of stellar evolution, even for stars similar to the Sun. For example, we show that current uncertainties on measured interferometric angular diameters and bolometric fluxes set a systematic uncertainty floor of $\sim$2% in temperature, $\sim$2% in luminosity, and $\sim$4% in radius. Comparisons between widely available model grids suggest uncertainties of order $\sim$5% in mass and $\sim$20% in age for main sequence and subgiant stars. While the radius uncertainties are roughly constant over this range of stars, the model dependent uncertainties are a complex function of luminosity, temperature, and metallicity. The NASA-$\it{TESS}$ mission presents a treasure trove for understanding the stars it observes and the Milky Way, in which they reside. We present a first look at the prospects for Galactic and stellar astrophysics by performing initial asteroseismic analyses of bright ($G < 11$) red giant stars in the $\it{TESS}$ Southern Continuous Viewing Zone (SCVZ). Using three independent pipelines, we detect $\nu_{\mathrm{max}}$ and $\Delta\nu$ in 41% of the 15,405 star parent sample (6,388 stars), with consistency at a level of $\sim 2\%$ in $\nu_{\mathrm{max}}$ and $\sim 5\%$ in $\Delta\nu$. Based on this, we predict that seismology will be attainable for $\sim 3\times10^{5}$ giants across the whole sky, subject to improvements in analysis and data reduction techniques. The best quality $\it{TESS}$-CVZ data, for 5,574 stars where pipelines returned consistent results, provide high quality power spectra across a number of stellar evolutionary states. This makes possible studies of, for example, the Asymptotic Giant Branch bump (AGBb). We demonstrate that mixed $\ell=1$ modes and rotational splitting are cleanly observed in the 1-year data set. By combining $\it{TESS}$-CVZ data with $\it{TESS}$-HERMES, $\it{SkyMapper}$, APOGEE and $\it{Gaia}$ we demonstrate the potential for Galactic archaeology studies using the data, which provides good age precision and accuracy that reproduces the age of high $\mathrm{[\alpha/Fe]}$ stars and relationships between mass and kinematics from studies based on $\it{Kepler}$. Better quality astrometry and simpler target selection than the $\it{Kepler}$ sample makes this data ideal for studies of the local star formation history and evolution of the Galactic disc. These results provide a strong case for detailed spectroscopic follow-up in the CVZs to complement that which has been (or will be) collected by current surveys. van den Heuvel & Tauris argue that if the red giant star in the system 2MASS J05215658+4359220 has a mass of 1 solar mass (M$_\odot$), then its unseen companion could be a binary composed of two 0.9 M$_\odot$ stars, making a triple system. We contend that the existing data are most consistent with a giant of mass $3.2^{+1.0}_{-1.0}$ M$_\odot$, implying a black hole companion of $3.3^{+2.8}_{-0.7}$ M$_\odot$., Comment: 5 pages

Main sequence stars exhibit a clear rotation-activity relationship, in which rapidly rotating stars drive strong chromospheric/coronal ultraviolet and X-ray emission. While the vast majority of red giant stars are inactive, a few percent exhibit strong ultraviolet emission. Here we use a sample of 133 red giant stars observed by SDSS APOGEE and GALEX to demonstrate an empirical relationship between NUV excess and rotational velocity (vsini). Beyond this simple relationship, we find that NUV excess also correlates with rotation period and with Rossby number in a manner that shares broadly similar trends to those found in M dwarfs, including activity saturation among rapid rotators. Our data also suggest that the most extremely rapidly rotating giants may exhibit so-called "super-saturation", which could be caused by centrifugal stripping of these stars rotating at a high fraction of breakup speed. As an example application of our empirical rotation-activity relation, we demonstrate that the NUV emission observed from a recently reported system comprising a red giant with a black hole companion is fully consistent with arising from the rapidly rotating red giant in that system. We investigate the age-chemical abundance structure of the outer Galactic disc at a galactocentric distance of r > 10 kpc as recently revealed by the SDSS/APOGEE survey. Two sequences are present in the [alpha/Fe]-[Fe/H] plane with systematically different stellar ages. Surprisingly, the young sequence is less metal-rich, suggesting a recent dilution process by additional gas accretion. As the stars with the lowest iron abundance in the younger sequence also show an enhancement in alpha-element abundance, the gas accretion event must have involved a burst of star formation. In order to explain these observations, we construct a chemical evolution model. In this model we include a relatively short episode of gas accretion at late times on top of an underlying secular accretion over long timescales. Our model is successful at reproducing the observed distribution of stars in the three dimensional space of [alpha/Fe]-[Fe/H]-Age in the outer disc. We find that a late-time accretion with a delay of 8.2 Gyr and a timescale of 0.7 Gyr best fits the observed data, in particular the presence of the young, metal-poor sequence. Our best-fit model further implies that the amount of accreted gas in the late-time accretion event needs to be about three times the local gas reservoir in the outer disc at the time of accretion in order to sufficiently dilute the metal abundance. Given this large fraction, we interpret the late-time accretion event as a minor merger presumably with a gas-rich dwarf galaxy with a mass M_* < 10^9 M_Sun and a gas fraction of ~ 75 per cent., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Previous Kepler Stellar Properties Catalogs have focused on reporting the best-available parameters for each star, but this has required combining data from a variety of heterogeneous sources. We present the Gaia-Kepler Stellar Properties Catalog, a set of stellar properties of 186,301 Kepler stars, homogeneously derived from isochrones and broadband photometry, Gaia Data Release 2 parallaxes, and spectroscopic metallicities, where available. Our photometric effective temperatures, derived from $g-K_s$ colors, are calibrated on stars with interferometric angular diameters. Median catalog uncertainties are 112 K for $T_{\mathrm{eff}}$, 0.05 dex for $\log g$, 4% for $R_\star$, 7% for $M_\star$, 13% for $\rho_\star$, 10% for $L_\star$, and 56% for stellar age. These precise constraints on stellar properties for this sample of stars will allow unprecedented investigations into trends in stellar and exoplanet properties as a function of stellar mass and age. Over the course of its history, the Milky Way has ingested multiple smaller satellite galaxies. While these accreted stellar populations can be forensically identified as kinematically distinct structures within the Galaxy, it is difficult in general to precisely date the age at which any one merger occurred. Recent results have revealed a population of stars that were accreted via the collision of a dwarf galaxy, called \textit{Gaia}-Enceladus, leading to a substantial pollution of the chemical and dynamical properties of the Milky Way. Here, we identify the very bright, naked-eye star $\nu$\,Indi as a probe of the age of the early in situ population of the Galaxy. We combine asteroseismic, spectroscopic, astrometric, and kinematic observations to show that this metal-poor, alpha-element-rich star was an indigenous member of the halo, and we measure its age to be $11.0 \pm 0.7$ (stat) $\pm 0.8$ (sys)$\,\rm Gyr$. The star bears hallmarks consistent with it having been kinematically heated by the \textit{Gaia}-Enceladus collision. Its age implies that the earliest the merger could have begun was 11.6 and 13.2 Gyr ago at 68 and 95% confidence, respectively. Since the onset of the `space revolution' of high-precision high-cadence photometry, asteroseismology has been demonstrated as a powerful tool for informing Galactic archaeology investigations. The launch of the NASA TESS mission has enabled seismic-based inferences to go full sky -- providing a clear advantage for large ensemble studies of the different Milky Way components. Here we demonstrate its potential for investigating the Galaxy by carrying out the first asteroseismic ensemble study of red giant stars observed by TESS. We use a sample of 25 stars for which we measure their global asteroseimic observables and estimate their fundamental stellar properties, such as radius, mass, and age. Significant improvements are seen in the uncertainties of our estimates when combining seismic observables from TESS with astrometric measurements from the Gaia mission compared to when the seismology and astrometry are applied separately. Specifically, when combined we show that stellar radii can be determined to a precision of a few percent, masses to 5-10% and ages to the 20% level. This paper documents the sixteenth data release (DR16) from the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys; the fourth and penultimate from the fourth phase (SDSS-IV). This is the first release of data from the southern hemisphere survey of the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment 2 (APOGEE-2); new data from APOGEE-2 North are also included. DR16 is also notable as the final data release for the main cosmological program of the Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS), and all raw and reduced spectra from that project are released here. DR16 also includes all the data from the Time Domain Spectroscopic Survey (TDSS) and new data from the SPectroscopic IDentification of ERosita Survey (SPIDERS) programs, both of which were co-observed on eBOSS plates. DR16 has no new data from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey (or the MaNGA Stellar Library "MaStar"). We use models of stellar angular momentum evolution to determine ages for $\sim500$ stars in the APOGEE-\textit{Kepler} Cool Dwarfs sample. We focus on lower main-sequence stars, where other age-dating tools become ineffective. Our age distributions are compared to those derived from asteroseismic and giant samples and solar analogs. We are able to recover gyrochronological ages for old, lower-main-sequence stars, a remarkable improvement over prior work in hotter stars. Under our model assumptions, our ages have a median relative uncertainty of $14\%$, comparable to the age precision inferred for more massive stars using traditional methods. We investigate trends of galactic $\alpha$-enhancement with age, finding evidence of a detection threshold between the age of the oldest $\alpha$-poor stars and that of the bulk $\alpha$-rich population. We argue that gyrochronology is an effective tool reaching ages of 10--12 Gyr in K- and early M-dwarfs. Finally, we present the first effort to quantify the impact of detailed abundance patterns on rotational evolution. We estimate a $\sim15\%$ bias in age for cool, $\alpha$-enhanced (+ 0.4 dex) stars when standard solar-abundance-pattern rotational models are used for age inference, rather than models that appropriately account for $\alpha$-enrichment., Comment: 22 pages, 11 figures, 3 tables. Over time, tides synchronize the rotation periods of stars in a binary system to the orbital period. However, if the star exhibits differential rotation then only a portion of it can rotate at the orbital period, so the rotation period at the surface may not match the orbital period. The difference between the rotation and orbital periods can therefore be used to infer the extent of the differential rotation. We use a simple parameterization of differential rotation in stars with convective envelopes in circular orbits to predict the difference between the surface rotation period and the orbital period. Comparing this parameterization to observed eclipsing binary systems, we find that in the surface convection zones of stars in short-period binaries there is very little radial differential rotation, with $|r\partial_r \ln \Omega| < 0.02$. This holds even for longer orbital periods, though it is harder to say which systems are synchronized at long periods, and larger differential rotation is degenerate with asynchronous rotation., Comment: 19 pages, published in MNRAS. Stars between two and three solar masses rotate rapidly on the main sequence, and the detection of slow core and surface rotation in the core-helium burning phase for these stars places strong constraints on their angular momentum transport and loss. From a detailed asteroseismic study of the mixed-dipole mode pattern in a carefully selected, representative sample of stars, we find that slow core rotation rates in the range reported by prior studies are a general phenomenon and not a selection effect. We show that the core rotation rates of these stars decline strongly with decreasing surface gravity during the core He-burning phase. We argue that this is a model-independent indication of significant rapid angular momentum transport between the cores and envelopes of these stars. We see a significant range in core rotation rates at all surface gravities, with little evidence for a convergence towards a uniform value. We demonstrate using evolutionary models that measured surface rotation periods are a biased tracer of the true surface rotation distribution, and argue for using stellar models for interpreting the contrast between core and surface rotation rates. The core rotation rates we measure do not have a strong mass or metallicity dependence. The internal working of low-mass stars is of great significance to both the study of stellar structure and the history of the Milky Way. Asteroseismology has the power to directly sense the internal structure of stars and allows for the determination of the evolutionary state -- i.e. has helium burning commenced or is the energy generated only by the fusion in the hydrogen-burning shell? We use observational data from red-giant stars in a combination (known as APOKASC) of asteroseismology (from the \textit{Kepler} mission) and spectroscopy (from SDSS/APOGEE). The new feature of the analysis is that the APOKASC evolutionary state determination is based on the comparison of diverse approaches to the investigation of the frequency-power spectrum. The high level of agreement between the methods is a strong validation of the approaches. Stars for which there is not a consensus view are readily identified. The comparison also facilitates the identification of unusual stars including those that show evidence for very strong coupling between p and g cavities. The comparison between the classification based on the spectroscopic data and asteroseismic data have led to a new value for the statistical uncertainty in APOGEE temperatures.
