Abstract

With growing concerns about the danger of global climate change and worldwide demand for energy, the interest in the investigation and construction of renewable energy technologies has increased. Fixed platforms are a type of support structure for wind turbines composed of different types of tubular joints. These structures are under different kinds of cyclic loadings in ocean environmental conditions, which must be designed and reinforced against fatigue. In the present paper, the relationships between the parameters in DKT-joints reinforced with FRP under axial loads are investigated using several models, under 16 axial loading cases, with different nondimensional parameters and different FRP materials, and orientations were generated in ANSYS (total 5184) and analyzed. The four loading conditions that cause the maximum stress concentration factors were selected. After analyzing the 1296 reinforced models, relevant data were extracted, and possible samples were created. The extracted data were used in a multivariate data analysis of maximum stress concentration factors. The Pearson correlation coefficient is utilized to study the relationship between parameters and subsequently to make predictions. To reduce the number of variables and to group the data points into clusters based on certain similarities, hierarchical and non-hierarchical classifications are used, respectively. Abstract

Numerous offshore wave energy converter (WEC) designs have been invented; however, none has achieved full commercialization so far. The primary obstacle impeding WEC commercialization is the elevated levelized cost of energy (LCOE). Consequently, there exists a pressing need to innovate and swiftly diminish the LCOE. A critical challenge faced by WECs is their susceptibility to extreme wave loads during storms. Promising concepts must demonstrate robust design features to ensure resilience in adverse conditions, while maintaining efficiency in harnessing power under normal sea states. It is anticipated that the initial commercial endeavors will concentrate on near-shore WEC technologies due to the cost advantages associated with proximity to the coastline, facilitating more affordable power transmission and maintenance. In response, this manuscript proposes a pioneering near-shore WEC concept designed with a survivability mode that is engineered to mitigate wave loads during severe sea conditions. Moreover, prior investigations have highlighted favorable resonance properties of this novel concept, enhancing wave power extraction during recurrent energetic sea states. This study employs numerical and physical modelling techniques to evaluate wave loads on the proposed WEC. The results indicate a remarkable 65% reduction in wave loads on the moving floater of the WEC during a range of sea states under the implemented survivability mode. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

There are currently several types of devices capable of harnessing wave energy, exploiting a broad variety of physical transformation processes. These devices – known as Wave Energy Converters (WECs) – are developed to maximize their power output. However, there are still uncertainties about their response and survivability to loads induced by adverse environmental conditions, with a consequent increase of the Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE), which prevents in fact their commercial diffusion. As evidenced by a large body of research, marine renewable energy devices need to have more robust design practices. To address this issue, we propose the CFD-based DualSPHysics toolbox as a support in the design stages. DualSPHysics is high-fidelity software inherently suited to numerically address most challenges posed by multiphysics simulations, which are required to reliably predict WEC response in situations well beyond operational conditions. It should be noted that WECs, generally, may be connected to the seabed and comprise mechanical systems named Power Take-Offs (PTO) used to convert the energy from waves into electricity or other usable energies. To reproduce these features, DualSPHysics benefits from coupling with the multiphysics library Project Chrono and the dynamic mooring model Moordyn+. In this work, the augmented DualSPHysics framework is utilised to simulate a range of very different types of WECs with a variety of elements, such as catenary connections, taut mooring lines, or linear and nonlinear PTO actuators. Version 5.2 of the open-source licensed code was recently released, making the numerical framework publicly available as one unit. This work aims to provide a numerical review of past applications, and to demonstrate how the same open-source code is able to simulate very different technologies.
