Abstract

This paper studies Schauder theory to transmission problems modelled by fully nonlinear uniformly elliptic equations of second order. We focus on operators F that fails to be concave or convex in the space of symmetric matrices. In a first scenario, it is considered that F enjoys a small ellipticity aperture. In our second case, we study regularity results where the convexity of the superlevel (or sublevel) sets is verified, implying that the operator F is quasiconcave (or quasiconvex).

Abstract

This work is dedicated to the study of a supersymmetric quantum spherical spin system with short-range interactions. We examine the critical properties both a zero and finite temperature. The model undergoes a quantum phase transition at zero temperature without breaking supersymmetry. At finite temperature the supersymmetry is broken and the system exhibits a thermal phase transition. We determine the critical dimensions and compute critical exponents. In particular, we find that the model is characterized by a dynamical critical exponent $z=2$. We also investigate properties of correlations in the one-dimensional lattice. Finally, we explore the connection with a nonrelativistic version of the supersymmetric $O(N)$ nonlinear sigma model and show that it is equivalent to the system of spherical spins in the large $N$ limit., Comment: 33 pages, 10 figures, typos fixed, new discussions included, published version

Abstract

In this work we investigate properties of a supersymmetric extension of the quantum spherical model from an off-shell formulation directly in the superspace. This is convenient to safely handle the constraint structure of the model in a way compatible with supersymmetry. The model is parametrized by an interaction energy, $U_{{\bf r},{\bf r}'}$, which governs the interactions between the superfields of different sites. We briefly discuss some consequences when $U_{{\bf r},{\bf r}'}$ corresponds to the case of first-neighbor interactions. After computing the partition function via saddle point method for a generic interaction, $U_{{\bf r},{\bf r}'}\equiv U(|{\bf r}-{\bf r}'|)$, we focus in the mean-field version, which reveals an interesting critical behavior. In fact, the mean-field supersymmetric model exhibits a quantum phase transition without breaking supersymmetry at zero temperature, as well as a phase transition at finite temperature with broken supersymmetry. We compute critical exponents of the usual magnetization and susceptibility in both cases of zero and finite temperature. Concerning the susceptibility, there are two regimes in the case of finite temperature characterized by distinct critical exponents. Abstract

AbstractDevelopmental stages present challenges that prepare the individual for new roles. Self-compassion may be a protective factor across this process. The present study aims to: (1) compare self-compassion scores in adolescence, young adulthood, adulthood, and older adulthood using a cross-sectional design and a continuous multigenerational sample; (2) study gender comparisons across age-groups; and (3) study gender comparisons within each age-group. The sample included 242 adolescents, 239 young adults, 208 adults, and 198 older adults. Participants answered the Self-Compassion Scale. Whereas Overall Self-compassion was similar for all age-groups, differences were found in Self-judgment, Common Humanity, Mindfulness, and Over-identification. Comparisons across age-groups for Isolation and Over-identification suggested that, as they age, female individuals develop self-compassion, whereas male individuals may struggle to be self-compassionate. Comparisons within age-groups suggested that, particularly, female adolescents and male adults may struggle the most to be self-compassionate. Abstract

The liquid residue called “produced water” from the exploitation of oil in the ground and sea is generated in large volumes and has significant polluting potential. In the Brazilian semiarid region, this liquid can be applied to the agricultural lands, if properly treated and applied to the soil by dripping. It is an alternative that can mitigate water scarcity and impacts on the environment. However, the vulnerability of drippers to clogging is a problem and can be mitigated with the dilution technique. The flow rate changes of drippers for the application of dilutions of produced water treated (PW) with underground water (UW) was analyzed. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized split-split-plot design with three replications. Plots consisted of treatments (D1: 100% of UW, D2: 90% of UW and 10% PW, D3: 80% of UW and 20% of PW, D4: 70% of UW and 30% of PW and D5: 60% of UW and 40% of PW). The split-plots consisted of types of drippers (G1: 1.6 L h-1, G2: - 1.6 L h-1, G3: 1.7 L h-1) and split-split-plots consisted of evaluation times (0, 40, 80, 120 and 160 h). Flow rate (D) and flow rate coefficient of variation (FCV) were taken every 40 hours untill 160 h. The results showed that the G3 emitter was the most resistant to clogging. The dilutions D2 and D3 provided the lowest losses in hydraulic performance in the drip units. The highest rates of clogging occurred in the G2 emitter operating in the D5 dilution

50. The role of self-compassion in the psychological (mal)adjustment of older adults: a scoping review.

Abstract

Background: The identification of protection factors regarding older adults' mental health is essential. Self-compassion, the capacity to be kind towards the self during challenging times, may be one such factor. Although still scarce, some research in this field has already been conducted with older adults. Our research question was the following: what is currently known about the role of self-compassion in the psychological (mal)adjustment of older adults? Objectives: To review any study designs, in any setting, where self-compassion and any indicators of psychological (mal)adjustment were assessed in participants aged ≥60 years. Design: A scoping review of English, Portuguese, and Spanish published and unpublished materials, using the EBSCOhost Research and PubMed databases and reference lists. Search terms included self-compassion, self compassion, older adults, elderly, seniors, and geriatrics. After screening and selection of the studies, we charted the relevant data. Results: Eleven published studies (2012–2018) were reviewed. Self-compassion was associated with, and a predictor of, diverse mental health indicators in older adults. Self-compassion was also associated with indicators of physical health, moderated the relationship between physical health indicators and mental health indicators, and mediated the relationship between diverse mental health indicators. Results were obtained with participants of different nationalities and age. All studies had a cross-sectional design, and most studies recruited well-functioning community residents. Conclusions: Self-compassion is beneficial for the psychological adjustment of older adults and may also benefit their biological functioning. Self-compassion seems particularly relevant for those experiencing more negative life events. Studies with more robust methodologies are needed in order to replicate these findings.
