We report the Astrorivelatore Gamma ad Immagini LEggero (AGILE) observations of solar flares, detected by the on board anticoincidence system in the 80-200 keV energy range, from 2007 May 1st to 2022 August 31st. In more than 15 yr, AGILE detected 5003 X-ray, minute-lasting transients, compatible with a solar origin. A cross-correlation of these transients with the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES) official solar flare database allowed to associate an intensity class (i.e., B, C, M, or X) to 3572 of them, for which we investigated the main temporal and intensity parameters. The AGILE data clearly revealed the solar activity covering the last stages of the 23rd cycle, the whole 24th cycle, and the beginning of the current 25th cycle. In order to compare our results with other space missions operating in the high-energy range, we also analyzed the public lists of solar flares reported by RHESSI and Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor. This catalog reports 1424 events not contained in the GOES official dataset, which, after statistical comparisons, are compatible with low-intensity, short-duration solar flares. Besides providing a further dataset of solar flares detected in the hard X-ray range, this study allowed to point out two main features: a longer persistence of the decay phase in the high-energy regime, with respect to the soft X-rays, and a tendency of the flare maximum to be reached earlier in the soft X-rays with respect to the hard X-rays. Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are millisecond radio transients observed at cosmological distances. The nature of their progenitors is still a matter of debate, although magnetars are invoked by most models. The proposed FRB-magnetar connection was strengthened by the discovery of an FRB-like event from the Galactic magnetar SGR J1935+2154. In this work, we aim to investigate how prevalent magnetars such as SGR J1935+2154 are within FRB progenitors. We carried out an FRB search in a sample of seven nearby (< 12 Mpc) galaxies with the Northern Cross radio telescope for a total of 692 h. We detected one 1.8 ms burst in the direction of M101 with a fluence of $58 \pm 5$ Jy ms. Its dispersion measure of 303 pc cm$^{-3}$ places it most-likely beyond M101. Considering that no significant detection comes indisputably from the selected galaxies, we place a 38 yr$^{-1}$ upper limit on the total burst rate (i.e. including the whole sample) at the 95\% confidence level. This upper limit constrains the event rate per magnetar $\lambda_{\rm mag} < 0.42$ magnetar$^{-1}$ yr$^{-1}$ or, if combined with literature observations of a similar sample of nearby galaxies, it yields a joint constraint of $\lambda_{\rm mag} < 0.25$ magnetar$^{-1}$ yr$^{-1}$. We also provide the first constraints on the expected rate of FRBs hypothetically originating from ultraluminous X-ray (ULX) sources, since some of the galaxies observed during our observational campaign host confirmed ULXs. We obtain $< 13$ yr$^{-1}$ per ULX for the total sample of galaxies observed. Our results indicate that bursts with energies $E>10^{34}$ erg from magnetars like SGR J1935+2154 appear more rarely compared to previous observations and further disfavour them as unique progenitors for the cosmological FRB population, leaving more space open to the contribution from a population of more exotic magnetars, not born via core-collapsed supernovae., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, published in A&A

AGILE is a space mission launched in 2007 devoted to high-energy astrophysics. The AGILE Team is involved in the multi-messenger campaigns to send and receive science alerts about transient events in the shortest time possible. For this reason, the AGILE Team developed several real-time analysis pipelines to analyse data and follow-up external science alerts. However, the results obtained by these pipelines are preliminary and must be validated with manual analyses that are the bottleneck of the workflow. To speed up the scientific analysis performed by scientists, the AGILE Team developed the AGILEScience mobile application (for iOS and Android devices) that offers to the AGILE Team a password-protected section used to visualise the results of automated pipelines. We present in this contribution an improved functionality of the AGILEScience application that aims to enable the AGILE Team to execute a full scientific analysis using their mobile devices. When the analysis is completed, the system sends an email to notify the user that can visualise the results (e.g. plots, tables, and HTML pages) through the application. The possibility to perform scientific analysis from a mobile device enables the AGILE researchers to perform fast scientific analyses remotely to validate the preliminary results obtained with the automated pipelines. We report the AGILE observations of GRB 220101A, which took place at the beginning of 1st January 2022 and was recognized as one of the most energetic gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) ever detected since their discovery. The AGILE satellite acquired interesting data concerning the prompt phase of this burst, providing an overall temporal and spectral description of the event in a wide energy range, from tens of keV to tens of MeV. Dividing the prompt emission into three main intervals, we notice an interesting spectral evolution, featuring a notable hardening of the spectrum in the central part of the burst. The average fluxes encountered in the different time intervals are relatively moderate, with respect to those of other remarkable bursts, and the overall fluence exhibits a quite ordinary value among the GRBs detected by MCAL. However, GRB 220101A is the second farthest event detected by AGILE, and the burst with the highest isotropic equivalent energy of the whole MCAL GRB sample, releasing E_iso=2.54x10^54 erg and exhibiting an isotropic luminosity of L_iso=2.34x10^52 erg/s (both in the 400 keV - 10 MeV energy range). We also analyzed the first 10^6 s of the afterglow phase, using the publicly available Swift XRT data, carrying out a theoretical analysis of the afterglow, based on the forward shock model. We notice that GRB 220101A is with high probability surrounded with a wind-like density medium, and that the energy carried by the initial shock shall be a fraction of the total E_iso, presumably near 50%., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures, 4 tables

AGILE is one of the satellites currently detecting terrestrial gamma-ray flashes (TGFs). In particular, the AGILE Mini-CALorimeter detected more than 2000 events in 8 years activity, by exploiting a unique sub-millisecond timescale trigger logic and high-energy range. A change in the onboard configuration enhanced the trigger capabilities for the detection of these events, overcoming dead time issues and enlarging the detection rate of these events up to $>$50 TGFs/month, allowing to reveal shorter duration flashes. The quasi-equatorial low-inclination ( 2.5$^{\circ}$) orbit of AGILE allows for the detection of repeated TGFs coming from the same storms, at the same orbital passage and throughout successive orbital overpasses, over the same geographic region. All TGFs detected by AGILE are fulfilling a database that can be used for offline analysis and forthcoming studies. The limited number of missions currently detecting these brief terrestrial flashes makes the understanding of this phenomenon very challenging and, in this perspective, the AGILE satellite played and still plays a major role, helping shedding light to many aspects of TGF science

The energy range between about 100 keV and 1 GeV is of interest for a vast class of astrophysical topics. In particular, (1) it is the missing ingredient for understanding extreme processes in the multi-messenger era; (2) it allows localizing cosmic-ray interactions with background material and radiation in the Universe, and spotting the reprocessing of these particles; (3) last but not least, gamma-ray emission lines trace the formation of elements in the Galaxy and beyond. In addition, studying the still largely unexplored MeV domain of astronomy would provide for a rich observatory science, including the study of compact objects, solar- and Earth-science, as well as fundamental physics. The technological development of silicon microstrip detectors makes it possible now to detect MeV photons in space with high efficiency and low background. During the last decade, a concept of detector ("ASTROGAM") has been proposed to fulfil these goals, based on a silicon hodoscope, a 3D position-sensitive calorimeter, and an anticoincidence detector. Context. In recent years, an in-depth gamma-ray analysis of the Orion region has been carried out by the AGILE and Fermi-LAT (Large Area Telescope) teams with the aim of estimating the H2-CO conversion factor, XCO. The comparison of the data from both satellites with models of diffuse gamma-ray Galactic emission unveiled an excess at (l,b)=[213.9, -19.5], in a region at a short angular distance from the OB star k-Ori. Possible explanations of this excess are scattering of the so-called "dark gas", non-linearity in the H2-CO relation, or Cosmic-Ray (CR) energization at the k-Ori wind shock. Aims. Concerning this last hypothesis, we want to verify whether cosmic-ray acceleration or re-acceleration could be triggered at the k-Ori forward shock, which we suppose to be interacting with a star-forming shell detected in several wavebands and probably triggered by high energy particles. Methods. Starting from the AGILE spectrum of the detected gamma-ray excess, showed here for the first time, we developed a valid physical model for cosmic-ray energization, taking into account re-acceleration, acceleration, energy losses, and secondary electron contribution. Results. Despite the characteristic low velocity of an OB star forward shock during its "snowplow" expansion phase, we find that the Orion gamma-ray excess could be explained by re-acceleration of pre-existing cosmic rays in the interaction between the forward shock of k-Ori and the CO-detected, star-forming shell swept-up by the star expansion. According to our calculations, a possible contribution from freshly accelerated particles is sub-dominant with respect the re-acceleration contribution. However, a simple adiabatic compression of the shell could also explain the detected gamma-ray emission. After the development of a BoGEMMS (Bologna Geant4 Multi-Mission Simulator) template for the back- ground study of X-ray telescopes, a new extension is built for the simulation of a Gamma-ray space mission (e.g. AGILE, Fermi), conceived to work as a common, multi-purpose framework for the present and future electron tracking gamma-ray space telescopes. The Gamma-ray extension involves the Geant4 mass model, the physics list and, more important, the production and treatment of the simulation output. From the user point of view, the simulation set-up follows a tree structure, with the main level being the selection of the simulation framework (the general, X-ray or gamma-ray application) and the secondary levels being the detailed configuration of the geometry and the output format. The BoGEMMS application to Gamma-ray missions has been used to evaluate the instrument performances of a new generation of Gamma-ray tele- scopes (e.g. Gamma-Light), and a full simulation of the AGILE mission is currently under construction, to scientifically validate and calibrate the simulator with real in-space data sets. A complete description of the BoGEMMS Gamma-ray framework is presented here, with an overview of the achieved results for the potential application to present and future experiments (e.g., GAMMA-400 and Gamma-Light). The evaluation of the photon conversion efficiency to beta particle pairs and the comparison to tabulated data allows the preliminary physical validation of the overall architecture. The Gamma-ray module application for the study of the Gamma-Light instrument performances is reported as reference test case.

The BL Lac PG 1553+113 has been continuously monitored in gamma rays with Fermi-LAT for over 9 years. Its updated light curve now includes 5 iterations of a main pattern comprising a high peak and a longer trough, with a period P \sim 2.2 yr. Our analysis of 2015-2017 data confirms the occurrence in January 2017 of a new peak fitting in the previous trend. In addition, we identify secondary peaks ("twin peaks") that occur in closely symmetric pairs on both sides of most main peaks, including the last one; their occurrence is supported by correlated X-ray outbursts. We stress that the above features strongly point to binary dynamics in a system of two black holes (BHs) of some 10^8 and 10^7 M_sun. At periastron the smaller BH periodically stresses the jet j_1 launched by the heavier companion, and triggers MHD-kinetic tearing instabilities. These lead to magnetic reconnections and to acceleration of electrons that produce synchrotron emission from the optical to X-ray bands, and inverse Compton scattering into the GeV range. For the origin of the twin peaks we discuss two possibilities: a single-jet model, based on added instabilities induced in j_1 by the smaller companion BH on its inner orbital arc; and a two-jet model with the smaller BH supporting its own, precessing jet j_2 that contributes lower, specific GeV emissions. Such behaviors combining time stability with amplitude variations betray plasma instabilities driven in either jet by binary dynamics, and can provide a double signature of the long-sought supermassive BH binaries., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures, accepeted by ApJ on December 21, 2017

e-ASTROGAM is a gamma-ray space mission proposed for the fifth Medium-size mission (M5) of the European Space Agency. It is dedicated to the study of the non-thermal Universe in the photon energy range from ~0.15 MeV to 3 GeV with unprecedented sensitivity, angular and energy resolution, together with a groundbreaking capability for gamma-ray polarimetric measurements over its entire bandwidth. We discuss here the main polarization results expected at low energies, between 150 keV and 5 MeV, using Compton interactions in the e-ASTROGAM instrument, from observations of active galactic nuclei, gamma-ray bursts, microquasars, and the Crab pulsar and nebula. The anticipated performance of the proposed observatory for polarimetry is illustrated by simulations of the polarization signals expected from various sources. We show that polarimetric analyses with e-ASTROGAM should provide definitive insight into the geometry, magnetization and content of the high-energy plasmas found in the emitting sources, as well as on the processes of radiation of these plasmas., Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures. e-ASTROGAM (`enhanced ASTROGAM') is a breakthrough Observatory mission dedicated to the study of the non-thermal Universe in the photon energy range from 0.3 MeV to 3 GeV. The mission is based on an advanced space-proven detector technology, with unprecedented sensitivity, angular and energy resolution, combined with polarimetric capability. In the largely unexplored MeV-GeV domain, e-ASTROGAM will open a new window on the non-thermal Universe, making pioneering observations of the most powerful Galactic and extragalactic sources, elucidating the nature of their relativistic outflows and their effects on Galactic ecosystems. With a line sensitivity in the MeV energy range one to two orders of magnitude better than previous generation instruments, will determine the origin of key isotopes fundamental for the understanding of supernova explosion and the chemical evolution of our Galaxy. The mission will provide unique data of significant interest to a broad astronomical community, complementary to powerful observatories such as LIGO-Virgo-GEO600-KAGRA, SKA, ALMA, E-ELT, TMT, LSST, JWST, Athena, CTA, IceCube, KM3NeT, and the promise of eLISA. Blazars radiate from relativistic plasma jets with bulk Lorentz factors {\Gamma} ~ 10, closely aligned along our line of sight. In a number of blazars of the Flat Spectrum Radio Quasar type such as 3C 454.3 and 3C 279 gamma-ray flares have recently been detected with very high luminosity and little or no counterparts in the optical and soft X-ray bands. They challenge the current one-zone leptonic models of emissions from within the broad line region. The latter envisage the optical/X-ray emissions to be produced as synchrotron radiation by the same population of highly relativistic electrons in the jet that would also yield the gamma rays by inverse Compton up-scattering of surrounding soft photons. To meet the challenge we present here a model based on primary synchrotron photons emitted in the broad line region by a plasmoid moving out with the jet and scattered back toward the incoming plasmoid by an outer plasma clump acting as a mirror. We consider both a scenario based on a static mirror located outside the BLR, and an alternative provided by a moving mirror geometry. We show that mirroring phenomena can locally enhance the density and anisotropy with associated relativistic boosting of soft photons within the jet, so as to trigger bright inverse Compton gamma-ray transients from nearly steady optical/X-ray synchrotron emissions. In this picture we interpret the peculiarly asymmetric lightcurves of the recently detected gamma-ray flares from 3C 279. High-energy phenomena in the cosmos, and in particular processes leading to the emission of gamma- rays in the energy range 10 MeV - 100 GeV, play a very special role in the understanding of our Universe. This energy range is indeed associated with non-thermal phenomena and challenging particle acceleration processes. The technology involved in detecting gamma-rays is challenging and drives our ability to develop improved instruments for a large variety of applications. GAMMA-LIGHT is a Small Mission which aims at an unprecedented advance of our knowledge in many sectors of astrophysical and Earth studies research. The Mission will open a new observational window in the low-energy gamma-ray range 10-50 MeV, and is configured to make substantial advances compared with the previous and current gamma-ray experiments (AGILE and Fermi). The improvement is based on an exquisite angular resolution achieved by GAMMA-LIGHT using state-of-the-art Silicon technology with innovative data acquisition. GAMMA-LIGHT will address all astrophysics issues left open by the current generation of instruments. In particular, the breakthrough angular resolution in the energy range 100 MeV - 1 GeV is crucial to resolve patchy and complex features of diffuse sources in the Galaxy as well as increasing the point source sensitivity. This proposal addresses scientific topics of great interest to the community, with particular emphasis on multifrequency correlation studies involving radio, optical, IR, X-ray, soft gamma-ray and TeV emission. At the end of this decade several new observatories will be operational including LOFAR, SKA, ALMA, HAWK, CTA. GAMMA-LIGHT will "fill the vacuum" in the 10 MeV-10 GeV band, and will provide invaluable data for the understanding of cosmic and terrestrial high-energy sources., Comment: 6 pages, 8 figures

We present results from our analysis of Chandra X-ray Observatory, W. M. Keck Observatory, and Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) images of the Crab Nebula that were contemporaneous with the gamma-ray flare of 2011 April. Despite hints in the X-ray data, we find no evidence for statistically significant variations that pinpoint the specific location of the flares within the Nebula. The Keck observations extend this conclusion to the "inner knot", i.e., the feature within an arcsecond of the pulsar. The VLA observations support this conclusion. We also discuss theoretical implications of the gamma-ray flares and suggest that the most dramatic gamma-ray flares are due to radiation-reaction-limited synchrotron emission associated with sudden, dissipative changes in the current system sustained by the central pulsar., Comment: Accepted for publication by the Astrophysical Journal

The Arcminute Microkelvin Imager (AMI) is a telescope specifically designed for high sensitivity measurements of low-surface-brightness features at cm-wavelength and has unique, important capabilities. It consists of two interferometer arrays operating over 13.5-18 GHz that image structures on scales of 0.5-10 arcmin with very low systematics. The Small Array (AMI-SA; ten 3.7-m antennas) couples very well to Sunyaev-Zel'dovich features from galaxy clusters and to many Galactic features. The Large Array (AMI-LA; eight 13-m antennas) has a collecting area ten times that of the AMI-SA and longer baselines, crucially allowing the removal of the effects of confusing radio point sources from regions of low surface-brightness, extended emission. Moreover AMI provides fast, deep object surveying and allows monitoring of large numbers of objects. We will review the crucial AGILE gamma-ray SNR observations focusing on the evidence of hadronic cosmic-ray acceleration that has been obtained so far. We discuss data on SNR IC443, W28 and W44. We show that in all cases a consistent model of hadronic acceleration and interaction with gaseous surroundings can be used to successfully explain the quite complex morphology and spectral characteristics of the sources. The remarkable Crab Nebula is powered by an energetic pulsar whose relativistic wind interacts with the inner parts of the Supernova Remnant SN1054. Despite low-intensity optical and X-ray variations in the inner Nebula, the Crab has been considered until now substantially stable at X-ray and gamma-ray energies. This paradigm has been shattered by the AGILE discovery in September 2010 of a very intense transient gamma-ray flare of nebular origin. For the first time, the Crab Nebula was "caught in the act" of accelerating particles up to 10^15 eV within the shortest timescale ever observed in a cosmic nebula (1 day or less). Emission between 50 MeV and a few GeV was detected with a quite hard spectrum within a short timescale. Additional analysis and recent Crab Nebula data lead to identify a total of four major flaring gamma-ray episodes detected by AGILE and Fermi during the period mid-2007/mid-2011. These observations challenge emission models of the pulsar wind interaction and particle acceleration processes. Blazars radiate from relativistic jets launched by a supermassive black hole along our line of sight; the subclass of FSRQs exhibits broad emission lines, a telltale sign of a gas-rich environment and high accretion rate, contrary to the other subclass of the BL Lacertae objects. We show that this dichotomy of the sources in physical properties is enhanced in their flaring activity. The BL Lac flares yielded spectral evidence of being driven by further acceleration of highly relativistic electrons in the jet. Here we discuss spectral fits of multi-lambda data concerning strong flares of the two flat spectrum radio quasars 3C 454.3 and 3C 279 recently detected in gamma rays by the AGILE and Fermi satellites. We find that optimal spectral fits are provided by external Compton radiation enhanced by increasing production of thermal seed photons by growing accretion. We find such flares to trace patterns on the jet power - electron energy plane that diverge from those followed by flaring BL Lacs, and discuss why these occur., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

Cygnus X-3 is a unique microquasar which shows X-ray state changes, strong radio emission, and relativistic jets. It is also an unusual X-ray binary with the mass-donating companion being a high mass star Wolf-Rayet but the orbital modulation (as inferred from X-ray emission) is only 4.8 hours, a value more common in low-mass systems. It has recently been shown by AGILE and Fermi that Cygnus X-3, is a transient gamma-ray source (>100 MeV). To understand the environment, nature, and behavior of Cygnus X-3 multi-wavelength observations are necessary. We report the results of XMM-Newton and BeppoSAX observations of the radio and X-ray emitting star LS I +61 303, likely associated with the gamma-ray source 2CG 135+01 and recently detected also at TeV energies. The data include a long XMM-Newton pointing carried out in January 2005, which provides the deepest look ever obtained for this object in the 0.3-12 keV range. During this observation the source flux decreased from a high level of 13E12 erg/cm2/s to 4E12 erg/cm2/s within 2-3 hours.This flux range is the same seen in shorter and less sensitive observations carried out in the past, but the new data show for the first time that transitions between the two levels can occur on short time scales. The flux decrease was accompanied by a significant softening of the spectrum, which is well described by a power law with photon index changing from 1.62+/-0.1 to 1.83+/-0.1. A correlation between hardness and intensity is also found when comparing different short observations spanning almost 10 years and covering various orbital phases.LS I +61 303 was detected in the 15-70 keV range with the PDS instrument in one of the BeppoSAX observations, providing evidence for variability also in the hard X-ray range. We present the Agile REconstruction Method (AREM) for gamma-ray (30 MeV - 50 GeV) direction reconstruction applicable to high-resolution Silicon Tracker detectors in space. It can be used in a "fast mode", independently of Kalman filters techniques, or in an "optimized mode", including Kalman filter algorithms for track identification. AREM correctly addresses three points of the analysis which become relevant for off-axis incidence angles: (1) intrinsic ambiguity in the identification of the 3-dimensional $e^+/e^-$ tracks; (2) proper identification of the 3-dimensional pair production plane and reconstructed direction; (3) careful choice of an energy weighting scheme for the 3-dimensional tracks. We apply our method to simulated gamma-rays in the AGILE detector. The excellent spatial resolution obtained by the AGILE Silicon Tracker, providing crucial analog information, makes it possible to improve the spatial resolution of previous detectors (e.g. EGRET) by a factor of ~ 2 in containment radius at gamma energy ~ 400 MeV. In this paper (Paper II) we complete our discussion on the results of a comprehensive GEANT simulation of the scientific performance of the AGILE Gamma-Ray Imaging Detector (GRID), operating in the 30 MeV - 50 GeV energy range in an equatorial orbit of height near 550 km. Here we focus on the on-board Level-2 data processing and discuss possible alternative strategies for event selection and their optimization. We find that the dominant particle background components after our Level-2 processing are electrons and positrons of kinetic energies between 10 and 100 MeV penetrating the GRID instrument from directions almost parallel to the Tracker planes (incidence angles > 90 degrees) or from below. The analog (charge) information available on-board in the GRID Tracker is crucial for a reduction by almost three orders of magnitude of protons (and heavier ions) with kinetic energies near 100 MeV. We present in this paper the results of a comprehensive GEANT simulation of the Gamma-Ray Imaging Detector (GRID) being developed for the AGILE space astrophysics mission. The GRID is designed to be sensitive in the 30 MeV - 50 GeV energy range, with excellent imaging and timing capabilities, and with a very large field-of-view (~3 sr). In this paper (Paper I) we present the GRID baseline geometry, a model for the charged particle and albedo-photon backgrounds for an equatorial orbit of 550-600 km altitude, and the main results of the first level (Level-1 Trigger) on-board data processing. Our simulations show that the GRID Level-1 data processing is expected to be capable of decreasing by a factor of ~ 20 the charged particle background (from \~2 kHz to below 100 Hz), and by a factor of ~ 30 the albedo-photon background. The gamma-ray photon detection efficiency by the imaging GRID is simulated to be particularly efficient, varying between 39% and 17% depending on photon energies and incident directions., Comment: 21 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research, Section A

The BeppoSAX Narrow Field Instruments observed the galactic source GS1826-238 in October 1997, following a hard X-ray outburst with a peak flux of about 100 mCrab detected by BATSE. Two short X-ray bursts (about 150 s) were detected up to 60 keV, with larger amplitude and duration at lower energies(up to a factor 20 times the persistent emission). This confirms the proposed identification of the source as a weakly magnetized neutron star in a LMXRB system. For both persistent and burst states, the spectrum in the 0.4-100 keV energy range is well fitted by an absorbed blackbody, plus a flat power-law with an exponential cutoff at 50 keV., Comment: to appear in the 3rd INTEGRAL WORKSHOP Proceedings

We discuss some open problems concerning the origin and the emission mechanism of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) in light of recent developments. If GRBs originate at extragalactic distances, we are facing four crises: (1) an energy crisis, models have to account for more than 10^{53} ergs of energy emitted in the gamma-ray energy band; (2) a spectral crisis, emission models have to account for the surprising `smoothness' of GRB broad-band spectra, with no indication of the predicted spectral `distorsions' caused by inverse Compton scattering in large radiation energy density media, and no evidence for beaming; (3) an afterglow crisis, relativistic shock models have to explain the complexity of the afterglow behavior, the longevity of optical transients detectable up to six months after the burst, the erratic behavior of the radio emission, and the lack of evidence for substantial beaming as indicated by recent searches for GRB afterglows in the X-ray band; (4) a population crisis, from data clearly indicating that ONLY hard and long GRBs show a strong deviation from an Euclidean brightness distribution, just the opposite of what expected from extragalactic models without substantial cosmological evolution., Comment: 5 pages, LATEX text plus one postscript figure included. We classify gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) according to their observed durations and physical properties of their spectra. We find that long/hard bursts (of duration T_90 > 2.5 s, and typical photon energy E_p > 0.8 MeV corresponding to BATSE's energy fluence hardness H^e_{32} > 3) show the strongest deviation from the three-dimensional Euclidean brightness distribution. The majority of GRBs, i.e., short bursts (T_90 < 2.5 s) and long/soft bursts (with T_90 > 2.5 s, and H^e_{32} < 3) show little, if any, deviations from the Euclidean distribution. These results contradict the prediction of simple extragalactic GRB models that the most distant bursts should be the most affected by cosmological energy redshift and time-dilation (long/soft GRBs). The strongly non-Euclidean GRB subclass has very hard spectra of typical photon energy above 1 MeV, i.e., outside the ideal energy range for optimal detection by BATSE. We briefly discuss the theoretical implications of recent detections of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) by BSAX. Relativistic shock wave theories of fireball expansion are challenged by the wealth of X-ray, optical and radio data obtained after the discovery of the first X-ray GRB afterglow. BSAX data contribute to address several issues concerning the initial and afterglow GRB emission. The observations also raise many questions that are still unsolved. The synchrotron shock model is in very good agreement with time-resolved broad-band spectra (2-500 keV) for the majority of GRBs detected by BSAX., Comment: 8 pages, LATEX text plus two postscript figures included. We report on observations of the fading optical counterpart of the gamma-ray burst GRB 970228, made on 4~September~1997 using the STIS CCD on the Hubble Space Telescope. The unresolved counterpart is detected at V=28 +/- 0.25, consistent with a continued power-law decline with exponent -1.14 +/- 0.05. No proper motion is detected, in contradiction of an earlier claim. The counterpart is located within, but near the edge of, a faint extended source with diameter ~0."8 and integrated magnitude 25.7 +/- 0.25. Comparison with WFPC2 data taken one month after the initial burst and NTT data taken on March 13 shows no evidence for fading of the extended emission. After adjusting for the probable Galactic extinction in the direction of GRB 970228 of A_v=0.7, we find that the observed nebula is consistent with the sizes of galaxies of comparable magnitude found in the Hubble Deep Field and other deep HST images, and that only 2% of the sky is covered by galaxies of similar or greater surface brightness. We report on Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations of the optical transient (OT) discovered in the error box of the gamma-ray burst GRB970508. The object was imaged on 1997 June 2 with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) and Near-Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer (NICMOS). The observations reveal a point-like source with R = 23.1 +- 0.2 and H = 20.6 +- 0.3, in agreement with the power-law temporal decay seen in ground-based monitoring. Unlike the case of GRB970228, no nebulosity is detected surrounding the OT of GRB970508. We set very conservative upper limits of R ~ 24.5 and H ~ 22.2 on the brightness of any underlying extended source. If this subtends a substantial fraction of an arcsecond, then the R band limit is ~25.5. In combination with Keck spectra that show Mg I absorption and [O II] emission at a redshift of z = 0.835, our observations suggest that the OT is located in a star-forming galaxy with total luminosity one order of magnitude lower than the knee of the galaxy luminosity function, L*. Such galaxies are now thought to harbor the majority of star formation at z ~ 1; therefore, these observations may provide support for a link between GRBs and star formation., Comment: 12 pages, Latex, 2 Postscript figures, to appear in The Astrophysical Journal Letters

We investigate the behavior of the high frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in 4U 0614+091, combining timing and spectral analysis of RXTE observations. The energy spectra of the source can be described by a power law (alpha ~ 2.8) and a blackbody (kT ~ 1.5), with the blackbody accounting for 10 - 20% of the total energy flux. We find a robust correlation of the frequency, nu, of the higher frequency QPO near 1 kHz with the flux of the blackbody, F_BB. The slope of this correlation, dlog(nu)/dlog(F_BB), is 0.27 to 0.37. The source follows the same relation even in observations separated by several months. The QPO frequency does not have a similarly unique correlation with the total flux or the flux of the power law component. The RMS fraction of the higher frequency QPO rises with energy from 6.8 +- 1.5 % (3-5 keV) to 21.3 +- 4.0 % (10-12 keV). For the lower frequency QPO, however, it is consistent with a constant value of 5.4 +- 0.9 %. We study the physical processes of the PSR B1259-63 system containing a 47 ms pulsar orbiting around a Be star in a highly eccentric orbit. Motivated by the results of a multiwavelength campaign during the January 1994 periastron passage of PSR B1259-63, we discuss several issues regarding the mechanism of high-energy emission. Unpulsed power law emission from the this system was detected near periastron in the energy range 1-200 keV. We find that the observed high energy emission from the PSR B1259-63 system is not compatible with accretion or propeller-powered emission. Shock-powered high-energy emission produced by the pulsar/outflow interaction is consistent with all high energy observations. By studying the evolution of the pulsar cavity we constrain the magnitude and geometry of the mass outflow outflow of the Be star. The pulsar/outflow interaction is most likely mediated by a collisionless shock at the internal boundary of the pulsar cavity. The system shows all the characteristics of a {\it binary plerion} being {\it diffuse} and {\it compact} near apastron and periastron, respectively. The PSR B1259-63 cavity is subject to different radiative regimes depending on whether synchrotron or inverse Compton (IC) cooling dominates the radiation of electron/positron pairs advected away from the inner boundary of the pulsar cavity. The highly non-thermal nature of the observed X-ray/gamma-ray emission near periastron establishes the existence of an efficient particle acceleration mechanism within a timescale shown to be less than $\sim 10^2-10^3$ s. A synchrotron/IC model of emission of e\pm-pairs accelerated at the inner shock front of the pulsar cavity and adiabatically expanding in the MHD flow provides an excellent explanation of the observed time variableX-ray flux and spectrum from the PSR, Comment: 68 pages, accepted for publication in the Astrophys.
