The Scientific and Research Institute of Eastern Europe and its affi liated School of Political Sciences were established in early 1930 in Vilnius. Closely associated with the academic community of the Stefan Batory University, they became a permanent part of the intellectual history of the city, primarily through their research and staff of eminent experts on the Soviet Union.

National and Ethnic Relationships Within the Suwalki and Kaunas Regions During the Times of Poland’s National Rebirth and Shaping Its New Borders This article discusses relationships between various ethnic and national groups that were characteristic for the North-Western part of region called Eastern Borderlands at the turn of XIX century. Vast literature on this subject is available, but it should be noted that the subject itself remains under strong political and ideological influence, it is also surrounded by many myths and common beliefs; and last but not least, there are historical sources that still have never been used in the discussion. One of such sources, not yet being used for research on ethnic divisions within the Polish-Lithuanian borderland at the beginning of XX century, are data gathered by Warsaw Statistical Committee in volume II (Ethnic Statistics for the Congress Poland) of the book Territorial Development of Polish Nationality(1917), by Włodzimierz Wakar. This work includes information on headcount of Polish and Lithuanian populations in years 1910 and 1914, divided by all communes and towns in the Suwalki Governorate. These statistical data are of exceptional scientific value, as they were gathered and aggregated at the commune level, showing detailed characteristics of ethnic transformations. By comparing the information regarding populations’ headcount in 1914 and 1910, it is possible to assess which of the two populations grew within this 4-year period. Thorough knowledge of dynamics and direction of ethnic (nationalistic) transformations taking place within the Suwalki Governorate, might bring us some interesting answers. It might help us find out if just before the World War I other regions inhabited by both Polish and Lithuanian populations, such as Vilnius, Grodno and Kaunas provinces, were under the process of polonization or lithuanization. W niniejszym artykule została podjęta problematyka stosunków narodowościowych charakterystycznych dla obszaru północno-zachodniej części tzw. Kresów Polski na przełomie XIX i XX w. Zagadnienie to opisywane jest w wielu publikacjach, jednak, jak okazuje się, jest ono, po pierwsze, bardzo podatne na wpływy polityczne i ideologiczne; po drugie, jest często przesycone mitami i potocznymi wyobrażeniami; i wreszcie po trzecie, istnieją źródła historyczne w dyskusji nad nim dotąd niewykorzystane. Takim zasobem, dotąd nie użytym w badaniach podziałów na polsko-litewskim pograniczu etnicznym na początku XX w., są dane Warszawskiego Komitetu Statystycznego odnotowane w części II (pt. Statystyka narodowościowa Królestwa Polskiego) dzieła Włodzimierza Wakara pt. Rozwój terytorialny narodowości polskiej z 1917 r. Zawierają one informacje o liczbie ludności narodowości polskiej i litewskiej w roku 1910 oraz w 1914 we wszystkich gminach i miastach Guberni Suwalskiej. Są to dane unikatowe z uwagi na to, że zostały zebrane, zagregowane na poziomie gmin, czyli pozwalają uchwycić zjawisko przemian narodowościowych z największą dokładnością i we właściwej skali. Porównując istniejące od ponad 100 lat informacje o tych liczbach z roku 1914 z 1910 r., można ocenić, czy w okresie tych czterech lat doszło do procesu wzrostu liczbowego ludności polskiej czy też litewskiej. Wiedza o dynamice i kierunku przemian etnicznych (narodowościowych) w Guberni Suwalskiej może przybliżyć nas do odpowiedzi na pytanie, czy tuż przed wybuchem I wojny światowej na innych obszarach zamieszkałych przez Polaków i Litwinów, takich jak Wileńszczyzna, Grodzieńszczyzna czy Kowieńszczyzna, mogło dochodzić do polonizacji czy do lituanizacji ludności zamieszkującej te tereny.

The notions of Central Europe and East-Central Europe (in opposition to Naumann’s Mitteleuropa), as well as Europe médiane, have replaced after the fall of Communism the term Eastern Europe, which was in universal use since the war. The metaphors offered by Miłosz, Kundera, and Braudel inspired the studious historical works of Halecki, Kłoczowski, Wandycz, Bibó and Szűcs, and Snyder, which, in turn, have revealed from their longue durée point of view a cohesiveness in the structures and identities of nations situated “between Germany and Russia;” the three historical kingdoms of Bohemia, Hungary, and the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. The distinctive identity of this region was expressed in the nineteenth century under the influence of Herder’s philosophy and Romantic poetry, by the figure of a “national poet” and the idea of “cultural nationhood,” which was distinct from the “nation state” associated with the Enlightenment paradigm. National “culture canons” and the “paradigmatic” type of identity of these countries were the result of specific cultural patterns. Meanwhile, a positional (“syntagmatic”) type of identity prevailed in bourgeois Western states. The transformation of countries after the fall of Communism, the political liberalization and pluralization of opinion, as well as the lack of a clear identity discourse in the West, have to some extent inspired the evolution towards politics of memory – an affirmation of the “paradigmatic” identity, which is not necessarily well suited for the conditions of modernity.

Šių dienų emigracija iš Lietuvos didėja, augantis išvykusiųjų skaičius kelia nerimą Lietuvos vyriausybei ir kitoms institucijoms, o svetur gyvenančiųjų emigracijos patirtys ryškėja naujausioje lietuvių prozoje. Šiame straipsnyje analizuojami 2010–2017 m. išleisti Gabijos Grušaitės, Vaivos Rykštaitės, Unės Kaunaitės ir Zitos Čepaitės kūriniai, kurie yra vertinami per juose atskleistus tapatybės pokyčius, lyginami su ankstesnės (e)migrantų literatūros tekstais. Straipsnyje yra aptariamas literatūroje ryškėjantis emigravusios tautos dalies santykis su erdve ir laiku, gimtosios kalbos, individualios tapatybės suvokimo aspektai, kosmopolitiškumo įtaka lietuviškajai tapatybei. Analizuojant minėtų autorių romanus išryškėja, kad jų veikėjams tapatybės klausimas itin aktualus: vieni siekia išsaugoti lietuvybę, kiti – nuo jos pabėgti, ją paneigti. G. Grušaitės kūryboje vyrauja kosmopolitinio santykio su gimtine bei svetima aplinka raiška: siekiama pabėgti nuo lietuvybės realijų arba jų paprasčiausiai nesureikšminti. V. Rykštaitės pagrindinė veikėja taip pat nori užmiršti savo šaknis ir susikurti naują, nepriklausomą gyvenimą Londone. Priešingai elgiasi U. Kaunaitės romano personažai: jie nori išsaugoti savo tautinę tapatybę, dažnai prisimindami savo šalies istoriją, ne išsižadėdami gimtosios kalbos, o laikydami ją vertybe. Lyginant šių autorių kūrybą su romanais, išleistais anksčiau (Valdo Papievio romanas „Vienos vasaros emigrantai“, 2003 m.) ir tais pačiais metais, tačiau daugeliu aspektų pasižyminčiais vyresniosios kartos tapatybės suvokimu, Zitos Čepaitės kūriniais (eseistikos knyga „Emigrantės dienoraštis“, 2011 m., ir romanas „Londono vėjas“, 2013 m.), galima teigti, kad jaunesniosios kartos rašytojų kūryboje vaizduojama jau Nepriklausomybės laikotarpiu gimusi karta, kuri yra laisvesnė, drąsesnė, iš dalies išsivadavusi iš provincialių prietarų, jog iš Lietuvos emigruoja tik savo tėvynės nemylintys ir negerbiantys žmonės. Kartos reprezentacija aiškiausiai perteikiama minėtų rašytojų romanuose, ryškinant tautinės tapatybės pokyčius. These days the scale of emigration from Lithuania is getting larger, statistical increases in the number of those leaving Lithuania is setting Lithuanian government institutions on edge, and the emigrant experiences of those living abroad get reflected in the newest Lithuanian prose. In this paper we analyze literary works, published from 2010 to 2017, by Gabija Grušaitė, Vaiva Rykštaitė, Unė Kaunaitė, and Zita Čepaitė. These works are evaluated in terms of the identity changes revealed in them and compared with (e)migrant literary texts written earlier. What relationship do those who have emigrated have with space and time and with their native language? Which aspects of individual identity become apparent in their self-conception, and how does cosmopolitanism influence their Lithuanian identity? An analysis of their works reveals that the problem of identity is very important to the characters depicted in those works: while some seek to preserve their Lithuanianness, others try to run away from it or to deny it. The latter attitude is evident in Grušaitė’s work, where a cosmopolitan relationship to one’s homeland as well as to the unfamiliar new environment is expressed when one seeks to escape from the realities of being Lithuanian or at least not to treat these as significant. Rykštaitė’s main character also wishes to forget her roots and to create a new and independent life for herself in London. The characters in Kaunaitė’s novel, on the other hand, seek to preserve their national identity by frequently recalling their nation’s history and not renouncing their native language but treasuring it instead. Comparing the works just discussed with some books published earlier (the novel “Vienos vasaros emigrantai” (“One Summer’s Emigrants”) by Valdas Papievis, 2003 and two works by Zita Čepaitė: the 2011 essay collection “Emigrantės dienoraštis” (“An Emigrant’s Diary”) and the 2013 novel “Londono vėjas” (“Winds of London”)) we can state that the writings of the younger generation depict those already born during the period of Independence as being freer, more courageous, and partially liberated from the provincial prejudices claiming that only those who do not love and respect their homeland emigrate from Lithuania. The representation of an entire generation is most evident in the novels of the writers discussed in this paper that show changes in national identity.

Lithuanian literature has to reconsider the concept of national identity regarding history, which was enriched with the established structure of the Statehood. One of the most famous writers is Dr Kristina Sabaliauskaitė (born 1974), an art historian, cultural researcher and writer, who managed to rediscover the concept of Lithuanian mentality and concentrated on the lives and work of Lithuanian nobility. Family histories of the nobles of the XVIII century are described in her four books "Silva rerum" I-IV (lat. "Forest of Things") in a literary style which fascinates contemporary society. She adopts a flamboyant but genteel classical style, which becomes very relevant after the emptiness left by postmodernism and postromanticism, after frustration with humanity and ideas of Enlightenment. Particularly, it relates to the Baltic states with their experience of historical injustice and enforced ideologies by numerous occupations. K. Sabaliauskaitė’s Silva rerum (written in 2008-2016) leads to a reformation of the concept of Lithuanian identity, and her turn from romantic ethnocentrism to baroque has enriched the versatility of European culture.

This article analyzes ethnic and confessional aspects of the New Year festival in Vilnius city. It is based on fieldwork data collected through semistructured interviews, freeform conversations, published sources, and is grounded on the historicalcomparative method. The author shows that a celebration of the same festival among different ethnic and confessional groups of people living in one city, viewed historically, can create symbolic boundaries of otherness or, in some instances, reduce such boundaries.

Straipsnyje nagrinėjama Kauno ir Vilniaus gubernijų bajorų žemvaldžių stratifikacija pagal valdomos žemės plotą ir jų tautinė / konfesinė sudėtis. Aptariama, kaip šios visuomenės grupės sudėtį perteikė skirtingi šaltiniai, sudaryti XIX a. 8 deš. – XX a. pradžioje – centrinės valdžios, vietinės administracijos ir iždo, bajorų luominių institucijų ir statistikos komitetų dokumentai, taip pat atskleidžiama, kaip susidarė informacijos apie bajorų luomą netolygumai ir skirtumai. Daroma išvada, kad bajorų žemvaldžių stratifikacija (stambūs, vidutiniai ir smulkūs bajorai) atspindėjo bendrą luomo raidos tendenciją – jis smulkėjo ir nyko. Bajorų žemvaldžių tautinė sudėtis buvo marga, tačiau susidariusi rusų dvarininkų grupė mažai keitė jos tradicinę tautinę sudėtį, susiformavusią XIX a. pirmojoje pusėje. Article dwells on the stratification of noble landowners in Kaunas and Vilnius provinces based on the size of the domain and their ethnic / confessional makeup and reveals how the composition of the social group in question was presented in various sources compiled in the 1870s – early 20th century, namely, documents issued by the central government, local authorities and treasury chamber, nobility estate institutions and statistics. Thus, the attempt is made to identify the reasons accountable for the discrepancies in information regarding the numbers and makeup of noble landowners. Hence the complications of inquiry into the composition of noble landowners in the second half of the 19th century arise from the nature and content of sources rather than their deficiency. During the long period of time no adequate landowner’s record keeping system which would facilitate the year over year comparison of data and track changes in the social group in question was available. Undoubtedly, the data accumulated at various occasions, even when attempts were made to collect the most accurate information, are fragmentary and of qualified reliability. There is little reason to talk about the concealment or falsification of information except perhaps data related to the “course of Russian land-ownership”. However, inaccuracies could have appeared in any of the information providing links. Information presented in the article covers not all sources that feature statistical data related to the nobility of Kaunas and Vilnius provinces and their land-ownership. However, all types of sources and the nature of information contained in them have been discussed. Considerable drawback of the abovementioned sources is their inability to provide plausible information on the dynamics of the makeup of noble landowners, especially in cases related to the inner fluctuations in the social stratus. They contain almost no data on the landless nobility thus making it difficult to establish the proportion of landowners within the nobility. All statistical sources, however, suggest common yet clearly differentiated social status of noble landowners. Noble landowners in Kaunas and Vilnius provinces fell in two major groups, namely, landed nobility (pomestnoje dvorianstvo) and nobility without the manor (bespomestnoje dvorianstvo). The main distinction between them was the nature of their property. Stratification of noble landowners (major, middle and minor nobility), despite the differences in the relation of the strata observable in different sources, reflected the main trends in the evolution of the estate – it was fining down and gradually disappearing. The ethnic composition of noble landowners was rather diverse. The sources single out the Polish / Catholic, Russian / Orthodox, German / Lutheran and Tartar / Muslim nobility. The majority of them were of local origin and the newly formed group of Russian landlords had little influence on their traditional ethnic composition which formed in the first half of the 19th century.

Lietuvos ir užsienio mokslininkai pažymi, kad šiuolaikiniam jaunimui būdinga dezorientacija, apatiškumas, blaškymasis tarp priimtinų ir kitų jiems primestų vertybių. Vyksta žmonių susvetimėjimas, nyksta atsakomybės jausmas, vyksta vertybių devalvavimo procesas. Niekas nedrįstų teigti, kad vertybių visuomenėje iš viso nėra. Tačiau labai svarbu išnagrinėti, kokios jos yra. Ir pradėti vertybių analizę reikia nuo jaunimo vertybinių orientacijų analizės, nes tai leis suprasti, kokiais gyvenimo prioritetais vadovausis visuomenė artimiausiu metu. Palyginti skirtumus tarp lietuvių, lenkų ir rusų jaunimo vertybių yra svarbu tam, kad būtų galima skirti daugiau dėmesio vertybėms, mažiau išplėtotoms vienoje ar kitoje tautinėje grupėje. Taip pat po šio tyrimo galima taps skirtingų vertybių susiformavimo priežasčių analizė, bus galima išsiaiškinti, kokie veiksniai turi įtakos skirtingų prioritetų atsiradimui. The problem of work, relevance and novelty. Lithuania‘s and foreign scientists allege that disorientation, listlessness and toss between acceptable and other people intruded values is common feature amongst mod. Alienation between people is in progress, responsibility sense vanishes, process of values devaluation takes place. No one could dare to state there are no values in society. However, it is essential to analyse, which of the values still exist. It is important to begin values analysis from evaluation of mod values orientation, because it allows to understand which of the priorities society would follow at an early date. It is substantial to compare distinctions amongst Lithuanian, Polish and Russian mod values because it enables to focus on those values which are less common in one or another national group. Straipsnio tikslas _- išnagrinėti Klaipėdos krašto gyventojų pilietybės ir tautybės tarpusavio santykio ir sąveikos aspektus, apsiribojant XX a. politiniais ir ekonominiais veiksniais. Mažai ištyrinėtų archyvinių šaltinių pagrindu straipsnyje siekiama parodyti, kad pagrindinės asmenybės tapatumo išraiškos formos - tautybė ir pilietybė - ne visuomet buvo laisvo asmenybės pasirinkimo/apsisprendimo dalykas, o neretai keisdavosi priklausomai nuo išorinio politinio ir ideologinio spaudimo. The paper aims to analyse various aspects of interdependence between the nationality and the citizenship of the residents of Klaipeda region by restricting the analysis to the political and economic factors of the 20th с The analysis was carried out on the basis of little known archival materials. The article seeks to prove that nationality and citizenship, as the principal forms of the identity expression, have not always been a matter of free self-determination; they would frequently change depending on the external political and ideological pressure.

Straipsnyje apžvelgiamas lietuvių požiūris į 1794 m. sukilimo vadą Tadą Kosciušką ir pateikiami jo kilmės bei tautiškumo priklausomybės vertinimai. Tie klausimai daugiausia dėmesio susilaukė tarp JAV lietuvių. Jie jautriai reagavo į JAV lenkų atvirus pareiškimus, jog JAV nepriklausomybės karo didvyris generolas Tadas Kosciuška buvo lenkiškos kilmės, Lenkijos pilietis. JAV lietuviai (J. Hertmanavičius ir J. Koncevičius-Končius) bandė parengti anglų kalba atskirą studiją, skirtą T. Kosciuškos lietuviškai kilmei įrodyti. Pagrindinis jų argumentas – pats T. Kosciuška laiškuose minėjo savo lietuvišką kilmę. Dėl neaiškių priežasčių tokios studijos ne tik anglų, bet ir lietuvių kalba mes iki šiol neturime. Tarybiniame laikotarpyje tautiškumo klausimas istorikų darbuose nebuvo aktualus. T. Kosciuškos lietuviškumas buvo siejamas su LDK pilietiškumu. Istorikas R. Jasas rinko medžiagą generolo biografijai ir jo ryšiams su Lietuva nušviesti, bet istoriko mirtis sutrukdė išleisti monografiją. Tarp Lietuvos istorikų vyrauja nuomonė, kad T. Kosciuška – gudų bajorų kilmės, bet iš LKD, o JAV gyvenančių lietuvių istorikų ir besidominčių istorija darbuose dominuoja teiginys, kad T. Kosciuška yra arba lietuvis, arba lietuviškos kilmės gudų bajoras iš LDK The article reviews the Lithuanians’ attitude towards Tadas Kosciuška (Kościuszko), the leader of 1794 rebellion as well as presents the estimation of his descent and nationality. These issues received close attention from the Lithuanians residing in the USA, especially during the pre-war period. They sensitively reacted towards the Polish emigrants’ explicit statements that the USA Independence War hero General Tadas Kosciuška was of Polish descent, a citizen of Poland. The American Lithuanians in their press, in their gatherings and in their reports to the USA authorities tried to deny the General’s Polish origin. There turned up quite a number of Kosciuška’s phony relatives from Lithuania to claim the General’s inheritance about which little was known. All these things sparked a keen interest in the General’s descent among the American Lithuanians. Therefore, they even attempted (e. g. J. Hertmanavičius, J. Koncevičius-Končius, A. Šalna) to prepare a detailed study in the English language to prove T. Kosciuška’s Lithuanian origin. This initiative was supported by the Lithuanian representatives in the USA, the main reason being the fact that T. Kosciuška himself mentioned his Lithuanian descent in some of his letters. Unfortunately, because of unknown reasons, we do not have this "Lithuanian" study either in the English or Lithuanian languages up to now. During the Soviet period, the issue of national identity was not appropriate in historians’ works as T. Kosciuška’s Lithuanian origin was associated with the citizenship of the Grand Duchy of Lithuanian (GDL). Historian R. Jasas collected the material about the General’s biography and his relations with Lithuania; however, the historian’s death terminated the research, and the monograph was not published. Some Lithuanian historians advocate the idea that T. Kosciuška is a Belarusian nobleman but from the GDL while Lithuanian historians from the USA are of the opinion that T. Kosciuška is either Lithuanian or a Belarusian nobleman of Lithuanian descent from the GDL. Unfortunately, it should be stated that the number of Lithuanian historians’ works, devoted to T. Kosciuška’s biography, his activity and relations with Lithuania, is regrettably and unforgettably low; we lag behind not only the Polish but also Belarusian historians in terms of researches conducted and scientific results published concerning the above mentioned issues

Straipsnis analizuoja tapatumo raišką kultūroje. Teigiama, kad tai, kaip individas suvokia ir vertina pats save, savo tapatumą bendrąja prasme, yra neatsiejama nuo kultūrinės, civilizacinės erdvės, kurioje jis gyvena, lavinasi ir mokslinasi, kurios pasiekimų vartotojas, perėmėjas, o kai kada ir produktyvus kūrėjas jis yra. Konstatuojama, kad kiekviena civilizacija formuoja savą individo tapatumo sampratą, nes nėra asmenybės, kuri būtų laisva nuo kultūros, o kultūra negali būti laisva nuo asmenybės. Autoriaus nuomone, į kultūrą įsitraukiama renkantis vertybes, tikslus ir vaidmenis. Jeigu tai daroma laisvai ir reikliai, o ne pasyviai priimant tai, kas peršama iš šalies, savo pasirinkimu individas tapatinasi su tuo, kam teikia pirmenybę. Todėl žmogaus tapatumas nėra vien jo paties kūryba, daug lemia tai, ką jis gauna iš savo pasirinkimų ir tapatinimosi. Teigiama, kad valstybės prestižas dalies lietuvių akyse nėra aukštas, todėl kultūrinė savivoka tampa itin reikšmingu nacionalinio tapatumo sandu. Akcentuojama, kad kultūra nėra atsiejama nuo tautiškumo, pabrėžiant, kad etninės kultūros sąsajos su tautiškumu yra glaudžios ir plika akimi matomos, o profesionaliosios kultūros, ypač meno, ryšys gali būti ne tik tiesioginis, bet ir netiesioginis. Autoriaus nuomone, jauno žmogaus kultūrinį tapatumą labai sustiprina humanitariniai mokslai, estetinis lavinimas, todėl viena iš svarbių švietimo sistemos gerinimo užduočių – siekti, kad mokyklose šių dalykų neužgožtų tikslieji mokslai, nes tik tada galima išugdyti supratimą, kad nuo gėrybių reikia kilti vertybių link. The following article analyses the expression of identity in culture. It is stated that how a person perceives and assesses himself and his identity in the general sense is inseparable from cultural and civilisation space in which he lives and educates, user, successor and sometimes a productive creator of which achievements he is. It is established that every civilisation creates its own concept of identity of a person, because there is no person who would be free from culture and culture which would be free form a person. According to the author, a person gets into culture by choosing his values, aims and roles. If it is done freely and demandingly and not passively by adopting the things offered from the side, a person is identical with the things he takes priority to. Therefore, identity of the human being is not only creation of his own, much depends on what he gets from his choices and his identity. It is stated that prestige of the state in the eyes of most Lithuanians is not high, therefore cultural self-concept becomes an important component of national identity. It shall be highlighted that culture is inseparable from nationality, by highlighting that links of ethnic culture are close and visible to the naked eye, while link of professional culture, especially of art, could be not only direct but also indirect. According to the author, humanities and aesthetic education greatly strengthens cultural identity of a young human being, therefore, one of the important tasks for improvement of education system is to seek that these subject would not be obscured by exact sciences, because only then consciousness that from material things we should go to values could be brought up.

Darbe keliamas klausimas, ar tautybė ir religija išlieka esminiai žmogaus savasties parametrai. Svarstoma, kodėl tautiškumas ir tikėjimas dabarties pasaulyje tampa naujų konfliktų priežastimi. Taip vadinamus „neginkluotus“ konfliktus lemia tautinių (arba religinių) mažumų ir valdančiosios daugumos nesutarimai. Straipsnyje plačiau aptariami esminiai saviidentifikavimo kriterijai: priklausomybė tautai ir religinei konfesijai. Abu šie žmogaus saviiidentifikavimo principai tapo svarbiausiais ir net įgijo tam tikrą iškilmingo neliečiamumo statusą istorijoje. Nepaisant to, esama padėtis nusipelno elementarios nuostabos, po kurios, pagal senovės filosofijos tradiciją, seka esminė abejonė ir visiškai teisėti klausimai: ar tautybė ir religinė konfesija iš tiesų yra svarbiausios žmogaus asmenybės charakteristikos ir rimčiausi savęs identifikavimo motyvai? Ar istorinė patirtis nesukuria, o istorinė atmintis neišsaugo kitų patrauklesnių ar labiau vertų žmogiškųjų orientyrų? Sunku prognozuoti, kokiems saviidentifikavimo kriterijams žmonija teiks pirmenybę ateityje. Tikėtina, kad žmonija ir toliau bus linkusi orientuotis į didžiuosius modelius. Tačiau galbūt bus sustabdytas skaidymosi į vis mažesnes tautines ar konfesines grupes procesas. Tik tokiu atveju bus galima kalbėti apie intelektinę žmonijos pažangą. At a very close examination, traditional self-identification by the nationality or the religious confession appears deprived from the common sense and even seems to be a kind of mauvais ton. Here a question arises: are the nationality and the religion the essential properties of a man or a woman? The most serious charges are following: national and religious conflicts are the reason of the greatest sufferings of mankind. If it is really necessary to rank a person with any class or category (but only if it is), historical memory can prompt more essential criteria.

Straipsnyje tyrinėjamas lenkų įvaizdis, sutinkamas lietuvių folklore XVIII–XX a. pirmoje pusėje. Siekiama atskleisti priežastis, kurios darė įtaką lenkų įvaizdžio susiformavimui, nurodyti jų vaizdavimo ypatumus įvairių rūšių ir žanrų lietuvių tautosakoje. Įvairių tautų folklore kitataučio įvaizdis paprastai yra neigiamas ir tik retai – neutralus. Kitataučių papročių, kalbos ir elgesio vertinimas įsikūnija tautosakoje sukurtuose neigiamuose įvaizdžiuose. Nepaisant įvairių konfliktinių situacijų tarp dviejų tautų, kurios paprastai atsispindi ir folkloristikos medžiagoje, lenkų įvaizdis lietuvių tautosakoje nėra itin dažnas. Galima atsekti keletą populiarių motyvų. Lenkai dažnai minimi istorinių įvykių kontekste. Lietuvių tautosakoje vaizduojama, kaip lietuviai ir lenkai kovoja išvien su bendrais priešais, taip pat kaip kovoja vieni su kitais dėl Vilniaus krašto. Lenkai kartais vaizduojami kaip didikai, bet jų tapatybė dažnai yra kvestionuojama. Kai kurie Lietuvos bajorai kalbėjo lenkiškai, buvo stipriai veikiami Lenkijos kultūros, todėl taip pat vadinami lenkais. Lietuvių folklore dažnai dėmesys atkreipiamas į lenkų charakterio bruožus, kurie yra nepriimtini lietuviams: arogancija, pagyrūniškumas, sumenkinimas viso, kas lietuviška. Sudėtingi lietuvių ir lenkų santykiai, politiniai ir teritoriniai konfliktai bei nesutarimai dėl kultūros paveldo lėmė įvairių stereotipų atsiradimą. Stereotipinis lenkų reprezentavimas lietuvių tautosakoje turi gana senas tradicijas, kurios nepasikeitė iki šių dienų ir yra giliai įsišakniję žmonių sąmonėje. The paper examines the Polish image as viewed in Lithuanian folklore in the first half of the 18th–20th c. It aims to reveal the reasons that influenced the formation of the Polish image, indicate the peculiarities of depiction of Poles in different types and genres of Lithuanian folklore. In the folklore of various nations, the image of a foreign national is negative and only in rare cases neutral. The evaluation of foreign nationals’ customs, language and behaviour is embodied in the negative images created in folklore. Despite various conflict situations between the two nations, which are typically reflected in folklore material, the Polish image in Lithuanian folklore is not very common. Nevertheless, several popular motifs could be traced. Poles are often mentioned in the context of historical events. Lithuanian folklore depicts how Lithuanians and Poles combined efforts to fight against common enemies and how they fight against each other over Vilnius Region. Poles are sometimes depicted as noblemen; however, their identity is often doubted. Some Lithuanian noblemen spoke Polish, were strongly affected by the Polish culture, thus they are also called Poles. Lithuanian folklore often pays regard to the Polish character traits that are unacceptable to Lithuanians: arrogance, vainglory, derogation of everything that is Lithuanian. Complicated Polish-Lithuanian relations, political and territorial conflicts and disagreements regarding cultural heritage determined the appearance of various stereotypes. Stereotypical representation of Poles in Lithuanian folklore has old traditions which have not changed to date and have been deeply rooted in people’s minds.

Tauta yra valstybės bei jos politinės santvarkos kūrėja. Dalyvavimą valstybės valdyme bei priklausymą valstybinei tautai rodo piliečio statusas. Tarptautinėje teisėje yra įtvirtintas principas, kad kiekviena valstybė pagal savo teisę nustato, kas yra jos piliečiai. Tuo pat metu valstybės turi gerbti laisvą tautų apsisprendimo teisę. Kokiai tautybei save priskirti, kokią kultūrą bei tradicijas puoselėti, yra asmens apsisprendimo reikalas ir negali būti reguliuojama jokiais valstybės teisės aktais. Pilietybė dažniausiai yra įgyjama gimimu arba natūralizacijos būdu. Valstybės vykdo tam tikrą pilietybės politiką priklausomai nuo tautinės savivokos. Pavyzdžiui, JAV, kur viena šalia kitos yra daugelis kultūrų ir tautų, yra įtvirtintas taip vadinamas individualus-civilinis pilietybės modelis. Vokietijoje, kurioje tauta suvokiama kaip valstybės pagrindas, yra pasirinktas kolektyvinis-etninis pilietybės modelis. Prancūzija, kur tauta suvokiama kaip valstybės kūrinys, yra civilinio-kolektyvinio pilietybės modelio šalininkė. Lietuvos Respublikoje po Konstitucinio Teismo 2006m. lapkričio 13d. nutarimo, kuriame yra pabrėžiama, jog Lietuvos valstybę reikia suvokti, kaip pilietinę tautą, kilo daugybė diskusijų dėl to, kokia yra Lietuvos tautinė savivoka. Skirtingų valstybių ne vienodas pilietybės instituto teisinis reguliavimas kartais gali lemti, kad asmuo turės dvigubą pilietybę. Every person, that is a part of the nation of the particular country, so that to belong to the civic nation must hold the status of the citizen. It is an international law principal that every country according to its national law defines who its citizens are, but at the same time the country must not violate the right to self-determination. Every person has a right to decide himself what nationality he considers himself or what nationality he wants to belong to. The option in any case cannot be regulated by the decisions of the government. The most common way in any country to get a citizenship is by birth or naturalization. The policy of citizenship depends of the countries ethnic identity that is how the country understands what the people in it are. For example, USA, traditional multicultural country has individualistic- civic model of citizenship, according to which the nation is conceived as a collective of sovereign individuals. Germany has a collectivistic-ethnic idea of nation and nationality, where the fusion of citizenship and nationality mean that the non-nationals would be treated as non-citizens. French have civic-collectivistic model, according to which an individual can acquire nationality, that is, citizenship through a process of assimilation. According to 2002 census Lithuanian minority in Poland is represented by 5639 Polish citizens, concentrated mostly in the Podlaskie province (5097), in the communes of Puńsk (74.4% of population), Szypliszki, Krasnopol and Sejny. Compared to other minorities, Lithuanian community in Poland is very well organized. Lithuanians are associated in 10 socio-cultural organizations, which cooperate rather than compete against each other, even if their scope of activity is more or less similar. The situation of Lituanian minority has a considerable and increasing importance in bilateral relations between their country of residence and their old homeland is quite significant. The impact of the Lithuanian minority on Polish-Lithuanian relations depends on a number of factors, which can be divided into two interdependent groups: 1) ‘internal’ factors, being results of the situation (activity) of the Lithuanian minority itself; 2) ‘external’ factors, being the function of principal variants of the three – sided relations: Lithuanian minority, Poland, Lithuania.

Straipsnio dėmesio objektas – nacionalinio tapatumo problema postmoderniame amžiuje. Pažymima, kad nacionalumas kaip aktuali šių dienų paradigma išsaugo metafizinį istorinį horizontą ir naujomis prasminėmis sugestijomis skleidžiasi postmoderniame virtualybės ir naujųjų technologijų triumfo pasaulyje, kuriame tradicinės vertybės tampa reliatyvios. Autorės nuomone, plačiau suvokiant europietiškąjį universalumą, mitiniuose tapatybės ieškojimuose svarbu atsisakyti pagrindinių prasminių dilemų: sena prieš nauja, globalu prieš lokalu, europietiška prieš tautiška, bendra prieš individualu ir nesitenkinti vadinamąja narcisizmo kultūra, kai savivoka tapatinama su socialiniu reikšmingumu. Pabrėžiama, kad esama tvaresnių už socialinius vaidmenis tapatumo šaltinių, kurie apima savęs konstravimo ir individualizacijos procesus, saugo vertybines orientacijas, propaguoja idealius, svarbius, laikui atsparius dalykus. Atskleidžiama, kad tėvynės klausimas kaip mitologinė dilema aktualus ir šių laikų pasaulyje: net ir žmonės, užaugę emigracijoje, stengiasi išsaugoti savo šaknis, kai kurie grįžta į tėvų žemę ir mėgina joje pritapti. Tačiau pabrėžiama, kad naujoji Europa vis dėlto sparčiai keičia esmines istorines tapatumo nuostatas, kurdama tam tikrą nacionalumo efemeriją. Reziumuojama, kad pasaulio įvairovė, laiko ir erdvės metamorfozės skatina nenutrūkstamas savęs ir savojo tapatumo paieškas. Teigiama, kad atsiverdami naujoms interpretacijoms, susidurdami su naujais iššūkiais, kuriame savąją mitologiją tapatumo ir ateities dėlei. This article focuses on the issue of national identity in post-modern times. It is noted that nationality as a relevant paradigm of present times preserves metaphysical historical horizon and using new meaningful suggestions unfolds in the post-modern world of triumph of virtuality and new technologies, where traditional values are relative. According to the author, in mythical researches of identity using broader comprehension of European versatility it is important to forget the main meaningful dilemmas, i.e. old versus new, global versus local, European versus national, and general versus individual, and not to settle for so-called culture of narcissism, when self-perception is treated as a social relevance. It is highlighted that there are sources of identity more sustainable than social roles, which involve processes of self-formation and individualisation, preserve valuable orientations, and uphold ideal, important, and time resilient things. It is revealed that the issue of homeland as a mythological dilemma is also relevant to the world of present times: even people raised in foreign countries coming back to the land of their parents and trying to fit in are eager to preserve their roots. However, it is emphasized that creating a particular ephemeral nationality the new Europe is nevertheless rapidly changing essential historical provisions of identity. It is concluded that the diversity of the world, and the metamorphosis of time and space motivate continuous search of oneself and own identity. It is stated that for the sake of identity and future when we open ourselves to new interpretations and face challenges we are creating our own mythology.

Kai įvažiavimas į Jungtinę Karalystę (JK) jau nesudaro problemų lietuviams ir kitiems Rytų europiečiams, prieš keletą metų tapusiems Europos Sąjungos piliečiais, mokslinių tyrimų tematika nukrypsta nuo paties migracijos proceso į migracijos patirtį. Šis straipsnis pristato, ką apie gyvenimą JK mano čia gyvenantys ir dirbantys lietuviai emigrantai, ir kaip šie požiūriai atspindi jų namų sąvoką. Šio straipsnio pagrindą sudaro atviri pusiau struktūruoti interviu su dvidešimčia lietuvių emigrantų Londone. Šie pokalbiai - tai platesnio doktorantūrinio tyrimo dalis "Namų konstravimas emigracijoje lietuvių ir lenkų emigrantų Jungtinėje Karalystėje pagrindu". Mano tyrimo dalyviai yra jauni, dažniausiai nevedę, dirbantys įvairiuose britų ekonomikos sektoriuose. Interviu analizė rodo, kad emigrantai atvyksta į JK jau turėdami galvoje pirminį šios šalies paveikslą. Tačiau tai, ką jie randa atvykę, ne visada atitinka jų pradinį įsivaizdavimą ir lūkesčius. Jiems čia gyvenant ilgesnį laiką, požiūris į šį kraštą keičiasi ne vieną kartą. Atrodo, kad lietuviams emigrantams namai siejasi su pastovumu ir priklausymu. Pagrindiniai veiksniai, įtakojantys tai, kaip jie jaučiasi emigracijoje, yra išsilavinimas, santykiai su vietine visuomene, santykiai su atvykėliais iš kitų kraštų bei ryšiai su lietuvių bendruomene. Taip pat pasirodo esminių skirtumų tarp to, ko svetimoje šalyje siekia vyrai ir moterys. Priklausomai nuo to, kaip visos šios problemos yra išsprendžiamos, išvykėliai arba pasilieka JK ir ten įleidžia šaknis, arba grįžta į tėvynę, kur jie priklauso ir kur jaučiasi namie. My doctoral research deals with the ways in which East European migrants construct home in migration. In more detail my aim is to find out how Lithuanian and Polish migrants feel in the UK, what problems they face in relation to their integration into the host society, and what solutions they see that make them feel 'more at home' in the immigration country. In this paper I discuss Lithuanian immigrants' experiences of the UK and how these views reflect their idea of home. I argue that there are 3 different UK from the immigrants' perspective: the UK as imagined before one actually sees it; the UK upon arrival; and the UK as a place where they settle in. The interview analysis shows that the length of stay in the UK plays a crucial role in the immigrants' adaptation process. With time they have a better chance to achieve the socio-economic stability in their lives and develop the feeling of belonging to the host environment. How successful they are in their endeavours to create a new home also depends among other things on their qualifications; their attitudes to multiculturalism; and their relationships with the host society and with the local Lithuanian community.

The aim of this work is to reveal the national processes taking place in Vilnius after restoration of Lithuania’s state self-dependence and predict the future trends. The work presents the ethnic problems in Vilnius in 1989-2003. The demographic and ethnic processes within the lands of Lithuania and Vilnius have had a definite, quite distinct specificity in terms of their historical and geographic aspects. Each of the historical periods mentioned exerted definite influence on the formation of the definite ethnic situation in Vilnius. The territory of Lithuania and Vilnius was inhabited, side by side with Lithuanians, by Poles, Jews, Russians, Germans and Belorussians. Under the influence of changing political conditions the proportions of numbers of particular ethnic groups changed as well, and the especially strong fluctuations concerned the relations among the representatives of various nations, languages and religious denominations. The works demonstrates that the change of political conditions and of the socio-economic system caused a change in the demographic and ethnic trends. After the regaining of independence the share of Lithuanian population started to increase systematically. Many Russians, Belorussians and Ukrainians would leave Vilnius. The differences between 1989 and 2001 are big, and they indicate that the new tendencies emerged, strengthening the position of Lithuanians in relation to the remaining ethnic groups, the minorities. Straipsnyje pristatomas 2001 m. atliktas tyrimas, kurio tikslas buvo nustatyti vyraujančius lietuvių studentų etninius stereotipus, įvertinti bendras studentų nuostatas tam tikrų tautybių atstovų atžvilgiu. Nagrinėjama, kokios tautybės stereotipai ryškiausi, kokias tautybes studentai mažiausiai įsivaizduoja ar pažįsta. Formuluojamos hipotetinės prielaidos apie šių stereotipų susidarymo priežastis. Išnagrinėjus lietuvių studentų požiūrį į 21 tautybės atstovų bruožus, galima padaryti tolias išvadas: Aukščiausią vietą užima vengrai ir žydai. Išvardinta daug teigiamų prancūzų, vokiečių ir amerikiečių savybių. Žemiausia vieta atitenka lenkams bei patiems lietuviams. Išvardinta daug neigiamų lenkų, rusų, vokiečių savybių. Pastebima tendencija, kad prasčiau vertinamos kaimynystėje gyvenančios tautos. Tolimesnių, mažiau pažįstamų kraštų atstovai vertinami geriau, dažniau nurodomi teigiami jų bruožai, o ne neigiami. Išimtis – žydų tautybės atstovai. Ryškiausias tarp lietuvių studentų yra čigonų ir rusų stereotipas. Apie pusę respondentų įsitikinę, kad čigonai - vagys, o rusai – girtuokliai. Lietuvio autostereotipo branduolys – darbštumas ir pavydas. Vis dėlto lietuvių autostereotipas yra labai prastas. Lygindami save su kitomis tautomis, lietuviai jaučiasi nevisaverčiai. Galima daryti prielaidą, kad didelę įtaką formuoti stereotipams turi žiniasklaida. Kai kuriuos etninius stereotipus yra suformavę kino filmai. Pastarųjų veiksnių įtaka stereotipizacijos procese didesnė negu tiesioginių ryšių įtaka. The article introduces the research carried out in 2001, which aimed to define dominating ethnic stereotypes of Lithuanian students and to evaluate general opinion regarding representatives of appropriate nationalities. The analysis includes issues regarding the nation, stereotypes of which are the most emphatic. Hypothetic assumptions are being generated regarding reasons of formation of these stereotypes. Having analyzed attitude of students towards features of representatives of 21 nations, the following conclusions may be made: The highest position belongs to Hungarians and Jews. A lot of positive features of French, German and American people have been mentioned. The lowest position was assigned to Polish and Lithuanian people. A lot of negative features of polish, Russians and Germans have been mentioned. It has been observed that nations of neighbouring countries are likely to be assessed more negatively. Representatives of further, less known nations are assessed much better. Exception – Jewish nation. The most emphatic stereotype among Lithuanian students is stereotype of Gypsies and Russians. About a half of respondents are sure that Gypsies are thieves and Russians are drunkards. The core of auto stereotype of Lithuanian people is diligence and envy. Nevertheless stereotype of Lithuanian people is very poor. Being compared with other nations, Lithuanians feel themselves as inferior. It may be assumed that mass media has a great influence towards formation of stereotype. Movies also contributed towards formation of some ethnic stereotypes. Influence of the latter factors in the process of stereotype formation is bigger than influence of direct relations.

Petras Vaičiūnas – šiandien mažai žinomas, tarpukario Lietuvoje žymus dramaturgas, komedijų ir melodramų autorius, poetas, vertėjas, publicistas ir teatro veikėjas, kurio žvilgsnis į socialinius procesus ano meto Lietuvos visuomenėje sulaukdavo dėmesio ir buvo vertinamas. Straipsnyje nagrinėjami tarpukario Lietuvos tautiniai stereotipai, atsiskleidžiantys P. Vaičiūno kūryboje. Analizuojamas P. Vaičiūno požiūris į Lietuvoje gyvenančius lenkų, vokiečių, rusų, žydų bei romų etninių bendruomenių atstovus, į užsienio valstybes bei jose vyraujančias nuostatas Lietuvos bei lietuvių atžvilgiu. Biografiniuose dokumentuose (laiškuose, memuaruose) bei publicistiniuose rašiniuose P. Vaičiūnas atsiskleidžia kaip tolerantiška asmenybė, humanistas, skelbiantis atvirumą pasauliui, tačiau dramaturginėje kūryboje jis – tautinės vienybės gynėjas. Dramaturginiuose darbuose išryškėja skirtingas P. Vaičiūno požiūris į skirtingas tautas: palankiausiai atsiliepiama apie žydus ir romus, t. y. apie tautas be valstybės. Lenkai satyriškai pristatomi kaip veidmainiai prolenkiškos politikos agentai, o Rusija laikoma keistu, agresyviu, demonišku pasauliu. Atviras, gyvas ryšys plėtojamas su Vakarais, kuriems P. Vaičiūno kūryboje atitenka aukščiausio pavyzdžio, kultūrinio autoriteto, mokytojo statusas. Galima teigti, kad šio autoriaus darbuose atsiskleidžia tarpukario Lietuvos demokratijos trūkumai bei etnocentriškumo kompleksai. Tautų (taip pat lyčių, luomų ir kartų) vienybė yra pasiekiama iš dalies visus sulyginant ir nureikšminant savito tapatumo klausimą. The article discusses Petras Vaičiūnas' view on Poles, Germans, Russians, Jews, Gipsies living in Lithuania as well as his view on foreign countries and their attitude towards Lithuania and Lithuanians. In biographical material (letters, memoirs) and publicistic writing Vaičiūnas appears to be a tolerant person, humanist who proclaims openness to the world, and in his plays he is a propagator of the idea of national unity. Nevertheless, in the plays his views on different nations are divergent, as they are determined by the state's a nationality represents relations with Lithuania. Vaičiūnas takes the most positive attitude towards Jews and Gipsies, i.e. nations without states. Poles are satirized as false (because they are denationalized Lithuanian landowners) executors of pro-Polish policy. Russia is treated as a strange, aggressive, demonic world. Open, vital relations are developed with the West that acquires the status of the highest earthly determinant, teacher, and cultural authority. Vaičiūnas' Works reflect the insufficiency of democracy in Lithuania between the wars and the complexes of ethnocentrism. The unity of nations (as well as genders, estates, and age groups) is achieved at the price of partial levelling and the loss of identity

Šio straipsnio objektas – istorinių šaltinių, senųjų raštų, tautosakos tekstų sklaida Kito, kaip reikšmingos mitines ideologemos, aspektu. Darbe siekiama parodyti Kito, kaip savito reiškimo, sklaidos galimybes ir apibrėžti įvairovės ribas senojoje lietuvių kultūroje. Kitoniškumo spektras itin įvairus. Atvykęs iš kitur ar besielgiantis kitaip, žinantis daugiau nei kiti ar pastebintis ką nors neįprasta visada susilaukia skirtingų vertinimų. Kitoniškumo sklaida – galimybė parodyti dar vieną mūsų senosios kultūros pusę, tai būdas aptarti ir atskleisti žinomus dalykus kitame kontekste. Stebėdami mūsų gyvenimą, religines misijas atliekantys kitataučiai tapo senosios kultūros saugotojais. Kartu jie užfiksavo ir lietuvių požiūrį į Kitus, gyvenančius tarp jų, bet besielgiančius pagal kitokio – chtoniškojo pasaulio kanonus, t. y. raganaujančius, draugaujančius su velniais, buriančius ar lemiančius ateitį. Kitoniškumas ne visuomet būdavo tikras, kartais tai būdavo tik patogi priemonė pasiekti asmeninių tikslų. Raganų teismai – tartum ideologinė kitoniškumo manifestacija. Nepaprastų galių turintys žmonės savo žinojimą slėpdavo, tačiau kitataučiams suteikiamos savitos galios projektuoja tradicinę patirtį į universalių reikšmių lauką. Tradicijos, kaip ir ideologijos, keičiasi. Būti kitokiam tampa madinga. Bet mitinė suvoktis, kad Kitas ar kitaip besielgiantis yra pavojingas, turi išlikti, kaip ir mūsų tradicijomis grindžiama refleksija. Conceiving ourselves dans I'unité du genre humain ['in the affinity of the human being'] (Marcel Mauss), we abstract and identify the historical experience, perceive the similarities and differences in the systems of ideas and values and differentiate the unity of the world, postulating it in the definitions of the identity of the 'Other'. The 'Other' is proposed as one of the most conspicuous ideological interpretations of the individual. The earliest records on the Lithuanians were made by foreigners - writing about us the 'Others' made our past significant. One of the most interesting historical attestations - the records of the general visitation of the Lithuanian Jesuit College of Vilnius and the diaries of the pastoral activity (Liber Fructuum Spiritualium) of the seventeenth and eighteent centuries - is a kind of key to new interpretations of the past. In a traditional community there are numerous ideological contrapositions between one's own and alien, similar and different, ordinary and extraordinary. The position of the 'Other' is presented on various levels: with respect to nationality, religion, community or gender. The mythical mindset demonstrates the 'Other's' singularity in our culture and encourages the perception of the 'Other' from the position of the present.

Straipsnyje apžvelgiamos istorinės – politinės sąlygos, nulėmusios Lietuvos krikščioniškosios jaunimo sąjungos „Pavasaris“ įkūrimą, atskleidžiami sąjungos tikslai, vadovavimo ir veiklos principai. In this article the author analyses the historical political conditions that determinate Lithuania Christian youth union “Pavasaris” foundation, reveals aims, principles of activity and leadership of this union.

Straipsnyje kalbama apie Vilniaus miesto gyventojų kaitą ir tautinės sudėties pokyčius bei juos sąlygojusias priežastis XX a. II pusėje. Remiantis 1989 ir 2001 metų gyventojų surašymo duomenimis, parodomas ne tik atskirų tautybių gyventojų skaičiaus kaitos intensyvumas, bet ir Vilniuje gyvenančių tautinių mažumų dalis nuo visos šalies atitinkamos tautybės gyventojų. Per 1959-1989 m. Vilniaus miesto gyventojų skaičius išaugo 3,2 karto ir atitiko bendrą Lietuvos miestų gyventojų padidėjimą. Iš didesnių tautinių mažumų sumažėjo tik žydų. Labiausiai išaugo lietuvių skaičius; po jų sekė totoriai, lenkai, baltarusiai, ukrainiečiai, rusai. Sparčiai daugėjo ir kitų tautybių žmonių. Didėjant beveik visų tautybių gyventojų skaičiui, jų dalis tarp visų gyventojų keitėsi skirtingai: sumažėjo rusų, ukrainiečių, baltarusių, truputį lenkų, o išaugo lietuvių bei kitų negausių tautybių žmonių dalis. Per visą aprašomąjį laikotarpį didžiausią Vilniaus miesto gyventojų dalį sudarė lietuviai, lenkai ir rusai. 2001 m. jiems teko 90,5% visų gyventojų. Po Nepriklausomybės atkūrimo sumažėjo Vilniaus miesto bendras ir daugelio tautybių gyventojų skaičius. Labiausiai sumažėjo žydų, ukrainiečių, rusų, baltarusių, truputį lenkų, padaugėjo lietuvių, vokiečių, čigonų ir kt. Atskirų tautybių žmonių amžiaus struktūra labai skirtinga, ypač tarp jaunų žmonių. Blogiausia amžiaus struktūra yra ukrainiečių, baltarusių, žydų, geriausia – žmonių, kurie nenurodė tautybės, ir lietuvių. Per visą 50-metį lietuvių skaičius ir jų dalis Vilniaus mieste didėjo. Palaipsniui Vilnius tampa vis lietuviškesnis. The paper analyses the dynamics of Vilnius residents and ethnic composition as well as the underlying reasons in the second half of the 20th c. Based on the population census of 1989 and 2001, the paper shows both the intensity of the dynamics of the number of residents of different nationalities and the share of ethnic minorities living in Vilnius with regard to respective nationalities across the country. From 1959 to 1989, the number of Vilnius residents increased by 3.2 times and corresponded to the overall increase in Lithuania’s population. Among larger ethnic minorities, only the number of Jews fell. The number of Lithuanians jumped most significantly, followed by Tartars, Poles, Belarusians, Ukrainians, and Russians. The number of other nationalities was rapidly growing. Their share among all residents changed differently: the number of Russians, Ukrainians, Belarusians and Poles decreased, whereas the number of Lithuanians and other small ethnic groups increased. During the given period Lithuanians, Poles and Russians constituted the major share of Vilnius residents (90.5% in 2001). After restoration of independence, the overall number of Vilnius residents and the number of residents of many nationalities fell. The biggest decrease was observed in the number of Jews, Ukrainians, Russians, Belarusians, and Poles (slightly), whereas the number of Lithuanians, Germans, Roma, etc. grew. The age structure of people of different nationalities is very different, in particular among young people. The worst age structure concerns Ukrainians, Belarusians, and Jews, whereas the best age structure concerns people who did not indicate their nationality and Lithuanians. The number of Lithuanians in Vilnius grew over 50 years and gradually it has become more Lithuanian.

Straipsnyje, daugiausia remiantis kunigų asmens bylų anketomis ir suvestiniais kunigų paskirstymo sąrašais, nustatytas bendras kunigų kontingentas, jo administravimas atsižvelgiant į tikinčiųjų tautybę ar ją ignoruojant. Iškeliami administravimui darę įtaką tautinio sąjūdžio ir rusų politikos veiksniai. Atskleidžiama tautinė kunigų sudėtis, jų geografinė ir luominė kilmė, mokamos kalbos, daugiau ar mažiau sąlygoję sielovados darbą ir tautinius santykius daugiatautėje Vilniaus vyskupijoje. On the basis of the personal files of priests and compiled lists of priests, the national affiliation, place of birth, class, and language proficiency of the priests in the diocese were determined. The nationality distribution of Catholics and their priests in the diocese did not correspond. Belarusians accounted for 56% of believers, but only 3–4% of priests. Lithuanians and Poles each comprised about 21–22% of parishioners, but 39–40% and 55–56%, respectively, of priests. Lithuanian priests worked mostly in the Vilnius Province (comprising 51–52% of all priests), especially in Lithuanian and mixed parishes, and Polish priests in the Gardinas Province (75–76%). This was a result of a more modern administration of priests than in the past, partly conditioned by the rise of the Lithuanian national movement and the policy of depolonization pursued by the Russians. In the Vilnius Province, where Lithuanians were concentrated, almost two thirds of all the churches had priests of the same nationality as the majority of the parishioners. This did not mean, however, that all of them were allowed to use the Lithuanian language in additional masses and rites. The majority of the Lithuanian priests were descended from peasants of the adjacent Žemaičių (Samogitian) Diocese, whereas the Polish priests came from the gentry and the urban population of the Vilnius Diocese. Almost all of the Lithuanian priests knew Polish. Only 11% of the Polish priests could speak Lithuanian. Of the priests of these nationalities, 12% could speak Belarusian. The origin and language proficiency of the priests had a direct effect on the pastoral work and national relations in the diocese.

Rytų Lietuva – etniškai mišrus regionas rytinėje Lietuvos Respublikos dalyje, susidaręs XVII–XX a. suslavėjus iki tol ištisai lietuviškoms teritorijoms. Ir šiuo metu etninė Rytų Lietuvos situacija ir sudėtingi istoriniai klausimai turi įtakos Lietuvos vidaus politikai ir santykiams su kaimynais, o tai leidžia šį regioną pavadinti probleminiu. Šiame darbe tyrinėjama Rytų Lietuvos etnogenezė. Apibendrinant tyrimą, teigiama, kad atkūrus Lietuvos valstybingumą Rytų Lietuvos nacionalinė sudėtis gana ženkliai pakito. Per analizuojamąjį laikotarpį lietuvių procentas Rytų Lietuvoje padidėjo, lenkų truptį sumažėjo, stipriai sumažėjo rusų, batarusių, žydų ir kitų tautybių. Rytų Lietuvos, kaip ir visos šalies, nacionalinės sudėties kaitai turėjo įtakos migracija. Tautiniams procesams šiame regione didesnę įtaką turi lietuvių ir Lietuvos lenkų tautinis atgimimas. Pagrindiniai veiksniai, lemiantys tautinių mažumų asimiliaciją Rytų Lietuvoje, yra šie: Lietuvos valstybingumas, valstybinės kalbos įteisinimas, pakankamai geras nacionalinių santykių klimatas. Didelę įtaką daro lietuviška žiniasklaida, švietimas ir mišrios santuokos. Lietuvėjimo tendencija turėtų išlikti ir artimiausiais dešimtmečiais. Negalima numatyti, kaip tautinius procesus Rytų Lietuvoje, o ir visoje šalyje, veiks įstojimas į Europos Sąjungą. Visi kaitos procesai vyksta natūraliai. Tačiau vyraujančios tendencijos kelia pavojų prarasti nuo seno Lietuvoje gyvenančias tautines mažumas. Eastern Lithuania is the ethnically mixed region in the eastern part of the Republic of Lithuania, which formed in the 17th–20th c. when the former Lithuanian territories were Slavicized. Both the current ethnic situation of Eastern Lithuania and complicated historical issues affect the Lithuanian domestic policy and relations with neighbours, which results in calling this region problematic. The study examines the ethnogenesis of Eastern Lithuania. Summing up, the author states that after the statehood of Lithuania was restored, the national composition of Eastern Lithuania changed rather significantly. During the given period, the percentage of Lithuanians in Eastern Lithuania increased, the share of Poles slightly decreased, whereas the number of Russians, Belarusians, Jews and other nationalities considerably fell. The change of national composition of Eastern Lithuania, like the entire country, was affected by migration. Ethnic processes in this region are more affected by the national revival of Lithuanians and Poles living in Lithuania. The main factors determining the assimilation of ethnic minorities in Eastern Lithuania are the following: Lithuania’s statehood, legitimation of the state language, fairly good climate of national relations. Lithuanian mass media, education and mixed marriages have a considerable influence. The Lithuanian tendency should continue for the nearest decades. We cannot predict how the ethnic processes in Eastern Lithuania, like in the entire country, will be affected by accession to the European Union. All change processes happen naturally. However, the prevailing tendencies pose danger to lose ethnic minorities that have been living in Lithuania for ages.

Straipsnyje analizuojamos Bezdonių mokyklos 1911 metų rusų kalba sudarytame sąraše esančios 64 mokinių 38 pavardės; tiriama galimybė pagal jų formą ir kilmę nustatyti pavardės turėtojo tautybę. Sąraše įrašyta tik kalba, kuria mokinys šneka šeimoje ir jo tikyba. Autorius pastebi, kad šeimos kalba dažnu atveju kertasi su pavardės kilme. Didesnis ryšys stebimas tarp šeimos kalbos ir tikybos. Dokumente mokinių vardai sistemingai pakeičiami rusiškais atitikmenimis, todėl tautybės iš tokio vardų užrašymo nustatyti neįmanoma. Pavardžių fonetika ir priesagos bei galūnės taip pat surusintos. Kadangi dauguma pavardžių krikštavardinės kilmės, jų rusiškas užrašymas gali vienodai atspindėti tiek lenkišką, tiek lietuvišką tos pavardės variantą, tačiau visi jie kilo iš LDK patronimų su rytinių slavų priesagomis -ovič , -evič ir negali rodyti tų pavardžių turėtojų tautybės. Tas pats pasakytina ir apie patroniminės kilmės pavardes, padarytas iš nekrikštavardinės kilmės asmenvardžių, turėjusių panašiai tariamą šaknį lietuvių ir slavų kalbose, bei pavardes su -sk- tipo priesaga. Sąraše tarp lenkiškai kalbančiųjų šeimų mokinių pavardžių gausu lietuviškos kilmės. Vilniaus apylinkės buvo sulenkintos XIX a. pab. ir XX a., taigi daugelio lietuviškos ir krikštavardinės kilmės pavardes turinčių mokinių tėvai dar mokėjo lietuviškai, tačiau dėl tuometinio lenkų kalbos prestižo galėjo stengtis pasirodyti ją vartojantys, nors tik menkai mokėjo. Apibendrintai teigiama, kad spręsti apie tautinius santykius 1911 m. Bezdonių apylinkėje iš šio sąrašo, neištyrus jo antroponimikos mokslo požiūriu, negalima. The analysis of names and surnames in the list of schoolchildren of the Bezdonys school registered in 1911 showed that the nationality of a person could only in rare cases be identified on the basis of the names and surnames found in the documents of that time and written earlier in languages other than Lithuanian. This requires a profound analysis of both linguistic and extralinguistic data.

Demokratizacijos procesų pradžioje trys Baltijos valstybės – Estija, Latvija ir Lietuva – priėmė sprendimą įtvirtinti liberalią demokratiją, grįstą pilietybės teise beveik visiems nuolatiniams valstybės gyventojams, arba „etninę demokratiją“, kurios visateisiais piliečiais galėjo pretenduoti tapti tik 1940 m. kartos palikuonys. Latvijai ir Estijai priimtinesnis buvo antrasis variantas, o Lietuva pasirinko pirmąjį. Kai kuriose valstybėse tautybė iš tiesų yra svarbi kaip įtraukimo/ išskyrimo iš politinės bendruomenės kriterijus. Jei vadovautumėmės pilietybės įstatymų analize, galėtume teigti, kad Lietuvoje tautybė tokio vaidmens neatlieka. Toks argumentas šiandieninėje Lietuvoje tapo stereotipu, kuriam šis straipsnis meta iššūkį. Pamatinė prielaida, kuria remiasi straipsnyje pristatoma analizė, yra ta, jog būtina skirti „formalias“ ir „realias“, tikrovėje egzistuojančias ir veikiančias politines bendruomenes. Neretai „politinės bendruomenės“ sąvokos turinys laikomas savaime suprantamu. „Formalioji“ politinės bendruomenės samprata – formaliai politines teises turinčių asmenų populiacija – yra nepakankama suprasti realiai vykstančius politinius procesus. Politinę bendruomenę būtų teisingiau suprasti kaip įsivaizduojamą bendruomenę tų, į kurių interesus privalo būti atsižvelgta priimant politinei bendruomenei svarbius sprendimus. Pagrindinis straipsnyje pristatomos analizės objektas – narystė politinėje bendruomenėje. Pagrindinis tyrimo klausimas yra susijęs su tautybe: ar asmens tautybę galime laikyti narystę politinėje bendruomenėje lemiančiu kriterijumi? At the beginning of the democratization process, the three Baltic States - Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania - made a decision to establish either a liberal democracy based on the right to citizenship for almost all of the state’s permanent residents, or an "ethnic democracy", where only descendants of the 1940 generation could aspire to become full-fledged citizens. The second option was more acceptable to Latvia and Estonia, while Lithuania chose the first. In some countries, ethnicity truly is important as a criterion for inclusion in/exclusion from the political community. If we were to follow the analysis of citizenship laws, we would be able to assert that nationality does not play such a role in Lithuania. In the Lithuania of today, this argument has become a stereotype - one which this article intends to challenge. The fundamental assumption that the analysis presented in the article is based on is that it is necessary to discern "formal" and "real" political communities that exist and function in reality. Often, the content of the "political community" concept is considered to be understood on its own. The "formal" political community concept - the population of people possessing formal political rights - is not sufficient to understand the political processes that are actually taking place. It would be more correct to understand the political community as an imaginary community made up of those whose interests must be taken into account when making decisions important to the political community. The main subject of the analysis presented in the article is membership in the political community. The main research question is related to nationality: can a person’s nationality be considered a determining factor for membership in the political community?
