Abstract: The HydroChange mooring dedicated to the temperature and salinity long-term monitoring of the Mediterranean deep water moored in 2003 in the Gulf of Lion central zone of Deep Water Formation (~42°N-5°E, ~2300m) did not surface as expected 2 years later because of the acoustic release malfunctionning. It was not until 2018 that it could be recovered, thanks to the Ifremer ROV VICTOR 6000, operated by Genavir. The video shows the ROV VICTOR descent, progression toward the mooring position, inspection of the mooring line and instruments, and the mooring release. Besides ancillary information that this video provides on deep fauna and bottom sediment aspects, it shows the unexpected -and never seen before- living biofouling on instruments and mooring line (~2300m, actinia). The longstanding efforts to recover the T and S(C) probe were rewarded by unique timeseries ot temperature spanning 2004-2015, and salinity spanning 2004-2011. The mesoscale distribution of mesozooplankton abundance, biomass, specific composition and size structure was investigated during ELISA-1 campaign (1997) in the framework of the program ELISA (Eddies and Leddies Interdisciplinary Study off Algeria, 1997-1998), partly dedicated to study the mesoscale features during 1997. Physical, biogeochemical and biological measurements were made on transects through two hydrodynamic features, one anticyclonic eddy and a small secondary shear cyclonic eddy. The use of combined zooplankton descriptors, i.e. biomass, abundance, size structure (e.g. NB-SS slope) and taxonomic structure, and of cumulative function allowed us to extract spatial trends in the anticyclonic eddy (AE 96-1). It is hypothesized here that the eastern edge of AE 96-1, characterized by thick layer of chlorophyll (between 100 and 150m) due to the downward entrainment of chlorophyll down to 200m, was favorable for small organisms (Paracalanus/Clausocalanus, Calocalanus, and Calanus) while higher abundance of large active swimmer such as chaetognaths was observed in the center. In the cyclonic eddy, the highest abundance of filter-feeders (ostracods, cladocerans, doliolids and salps) was related to enhance trophic conditions, i.e. highest chlorophyll concentration (4-8mgm.sup.-3). These results show that cyclonic and anticyclonic eddies strongly influence the mesoscale characteristics of zooplankton in the Algerian basin during summer. Higher chlorophyll concentrations observed in spring suggest that such eddies can have an even more pronounced impact on the structuring of the ecosystem during high productive season. Abstract: Research indicates that offshore cyclonic eddies, although shorter in duration than anticyclonic eddies, encourage episodic biological production increases in the Algerian Basin of the Mediterranean Sea. A maximum concentration of chlorophyll-alpha was found within the cyclonic eddy, and was linked to proxies of nutrient flux entering the upper layers.

Abstract: The general circulation features of the oceans off Algeria have long been the subject of debate and have been difficult to evaluate. A new study, based on the Western Mediterranean Circulation Experiment, centres its findings on infra-red images, plus temperature and current data collected at 0-5 deg East and at depths of 100, 300, 1000 and 2000 mt, and shows that the surface and deep eddies around the eastern Algerian Basin remain linked and describe a cyclonic circuit. The findings support the hypothesis that mesoscale eddies formed by the Algerian Current can have a strong influence on the circulation of all water masses. Details of the experiment are presented.

These mesoscale anticyclonic eddies are of primary importance to the circulation of all the water masses in the Western Mediterranean. They are generated by instability processes disturbing the flow of Modified Atlantic Water (MAW) shortly after it reaches the African coast near 0[degrees]E, namely the Algerian Current. Young eddies, which have diameters of 50-100 km, and the upwelling generally attached to their southwestern edges, drift eastward along the coast at a few km per day, sometimes during several months; as they grow older and larger, the most vigorous ones leave the coastal zone and drift seaward. Some of them may reach the Sardinian continental slope where a well-defined vein of Levantine Intermediate Water (LIW) flows; we suspect them to be capable to pull fragments of LIW seaward, and in fact, the least modified LIW we encountered in the middle of the Algerian Basin had the form of rings or filaments trapped by one eddy. Eddies several months old may have diameters as large as [is nearly equal] 200 km; they also entrain the Mediterranean Deep Water (MDW), and they probably extend down to the bottom. In 1984, two such eddies occupied most of the Algerian Basin; the MAW was deflected seaward by the westernmost one, from the Algerian coast at [is nearly equal] 3[degrees]E as far as the Balearic Islands, and was then dispatched by other eddies through the whole basin as though by a set of paddle-wheels. Such interactions are perhaps not as exceptional as was previously expected. These mesoscale phenomena have strong biological implications. The Western Mediterranean Sea thus appears to be a very suitable place for the observation and modelling of such mesoscale coherent structures.

Abstract: International audience; During winter 2012–2013, open‐ocean deep convection which is a major driver for the thermohaline circulation and ventilation of the ocean, occurred in the Gulf of Lions (Northwestern Mediterranean Sea) and has been thoroughly documented thanks in particular to the deployment of several gliders, Argo profiling floats, several dedicated ship cruises, and a mooring array during a period of about a year. Thanks to these intense observational efforts, we show that deep convection reached the bottom in winter early in February 2013 in a area of maximum 28 ± 3 109 m2. We present new quantitative results with estimates of heat and salt content at the subbasin scale at different time scales (on the seasonal scale to a 10 days basis) through optimal interpolation techniques, and robust estimates of the deep water formation rate of 2.0 ± 0.2 Sv. We provide an overview of the spatiotemporal coverage that has been reached throughout the seasons this year and we highlight some results based on data analysis and numerical modeling that are presented in this special issue. They concern key circulation features for the deep convection and the subsequent bloom such as Submesoscale Coherent Vortices (SCVs), the plumes, and symmetric instability at the edge of the deep convection area.

34. Automated in situ observations of upper ocean biogeochemistry, bio-optics, and physics and their potential use for global studies

Abstract: The processes controlling the flux of carbon in the upper ocean have dynamic ranges in space and time of at least nine orders of magnitude. These processes depend on a broad suite of inter-related biogeochemical, bio-optical, and physical variables. These variables should be sampled on scales matching the relevant phenomena. Traditional ship-based sampling, while critical for detailed and more comprehensive observations, can span only limited portions of these ranges because of logistical and financial constraints. Further, remote observations from satellite platforms enable broad horizontal coverage which is restricted to the upper few meters of the ocean. For these main reasons, automated subsurface measurement systems are important for the fulfillment of research goals related to the regional and global estimation and modeling of time varying biogeochemical fluxes. Within the past few years, new sensors and systems capable of autonomously measuring several of the critical variables have been developed. The platforms for deploying these systems now include moorings and drifters and it is likely that autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV's) will become available for use in the future. Each of these platforms satisfies particular sampling needs and can be used to complement both shipboard and satellite observations. In the present review, (1) sampling considerations will be summarized, (2) examples of data obtained from some of the existing automated in situ sampling systems will be highlighted, (3) future sensors and systems will be discussed, (4) data management issues for present and future automated systems will be considered, and (5) the status of near real-time data telemetry will be outlined. Finally, we wish to make it clear at the outset that the perspectives presented here are those of the authors and are not intended to represent those of the United States JGOFS program, the International JGOFS program, NOAA's C&GC program, or other global ocean programs.

Abstract: During winter 2012–2013, open‐ocean deep convection which is a major driver for the thermohaline circulation and ventilation of the ocean, occurred in the Gulf of Lions (Northwestern Mediterranean Sea) and has been thoroughly documented thanks in particular to the deployment of several gliders, Argo profiling floats, several dedicated ship cruises, and a mooring array during a period of about a year. Thanks to these intense observational efforts, we show that deep convection reached the bottom in winter early in February 2013 in a area of maximum 28 ± 3 . We present new quantitative results with estimates of heat and salt content at the subbasin scale at different time scales (on the seasonal scale to a 10 days basis) through optimal interpolation techniques, and robust estimates of the deep water formation rate of 2.0 . We provide an overview of the spatiotemporal coverage that has been reached throughout the seasons this year and we highlight some results based on data analysis and numerical modeling that are presented in this special issue. They concern key circulation features for the deep convection and the subsequent bloom such as Submesoscale Coherent Vortices (SCVs), the plumes, and symmetric instability at the edge of the deep convection area.

41. Water masses transformation through the Strait of Gibraltar

Abstract: The Strait of Gibraltar (SoG) is the natural connection between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, here the basic exchange involves Atlantic Waters (AWs) flowing on surface toward the Mediterranean and Mediterranean Waters (MWs) flowing below towards the Atlantic. MWs was usually considered to be composed by Levantine Intermediate Water and Western Mediterranean Deep Water, but recently some works highlighted the presence of others MWs as Tyrrhenian Dense Water and Winter Intermediate Water, this makes a total of six water masses being involved in the exchange. In the framework of the Hydrochanges European programme, the French Mediterranean Institute of Oceanography carried out the Gibraltar International Campaign (GIC) in July 4th-6th 2012. Data were collected with a Moving Vessel Profiler (MVP) which allows a very high spatial resolution. The campaign was developed during a short period allowing us for making a quasisynoptic description of the water masses distribution in the SoG. θS diagrams show a noticeable erosion of the distinctive features of the MWs as they flow from East to West, the same applies to the NACW flowing in the opposite way. Main changes in both Mediterranean and Atlantic waters occurs once passed the main sill. A clustering method is presented to determine the affinity of each MVP sample to one of the water masses involved in the exchanged flows, proposing a functional classification to investigate their transformation along the strait. The method reveals a observable evolution of the pattern of the MWs as they flow westward mainly due to the strong mixing in the Tangier basin. The three MWs are easy to recognize east of the sill, while downstream a marked weakening of the spatial differentiation is observed. Universidad de Málaga. 42. Hydrochanges Gibraltar Campaign - characterization of Mediterranean Outflow through the Strait of Gibraltar

Abstract: The precise characterization of the Mediterranean outflow through the Strait of Gibraltar is a very well know issue although a question rather far to be resolved completely. Many scientific efforts have been invested to try to define the exact composition and evolution of the Mediterranean waters (MWs) raising at the entrance of the strait and crossing one of the most dynamically active site of the worldwide oceans. In the framework of the Hydrochanges European programme, the “Gibraltar International Campaign” was carried out onboard the R/V Tethys II by the French Mediterranean Institute of Oceanography (MIO) in June 2012, with the chance to perform a series of highresolution CTD meridional transects. The instrument used is a Moving Vessel Profiler (MVP), a towed free-falling CTD, which enables a very high spatial resolution semi-autonomous monitoring of the column water. This work presents the hydrological data set retrieved in the campaign and proposes their usage as tool for the characterization of the composition and the evolution of the Mediterranean outflow along the strait. Two main assumptions are discussed: the generally accepted hypothesis of only two main Mediterranean waters crossing the strait, the Levantine IntermediateWater (LIW) and theWestern Mediterranean DeepWater (WMDW), and the novel theory, principally supported by the MIO group since last years, of the presence of up to four Mediterranean waters raising at the strait entrance: two intermediate waters, the LIW and the Winter Intermediate Water (WIW) and a further dense water, the Tyrrhenian Deep Water (TDW) flanking the WMDW. In both cases the mixing within these MWs and between them and the Atlantic inflowing waters, namely the Surface Atlantic Water (SAW) and the North Atlantic Central Water (NACW), are analyzed and discussed. A classical mixing triangle approach is proposed for the first assumption, with the definition of a third vertex as a general Atlantic water, and a novel approach based on a simplified cluster analysis of the Temperature/Salinity/Density diagrams of the transects, is applied to the six water masses considered in the second assumption. The latter is also applied to the GIBEX2 (Gibraltar Experiment) dataset in order to confirm, by a completely subjective approach, the rather arbitrary definition of the MWs accepted so far. A clear differentiation of the MWs along the cross-strait direction is observed, with intermediate waters laying on the northern Spanish slope and the denser ones flowing along the southern slope. However, this structure is deeply modified by the very strong mixing occurring in the strait and it ends to nearly disappear at west of the Camarinal Sill. The temporal variability, strictly related to the tidal dynamics, is very high, inducing strong changes in this structure throughout the strait, up to substantially modify it. In order to investigate this temporal variability, the recent series of current and thermohaline characteristics of the MWs, sampled simultaneously at Espartel and in two (north and south) extremes of the Camarinal Sill by the Physical Oceanography Group of the University of Málaga, have also been examined with interesting results on the characterization of the outflow evolution along the strait. 43. Time variability on hydrology and biogeochemistry induced by mesoscale eddies in the Algerian Basin: a one year high resolution and multiplatform experiment

Abstract: In the framework of the ELISA project (1997-1998, MAST-3/MTP/MATER program) 1-year high frequency time series were acquired at fixed points in the Algerian Basin, an open sea area of the Mediterranean sea (3000m). This multidisciplinary and multiplatform experiment was dedicated to study the algerian eddies and their influence on general circulation and on biological phenomena. During 3 main cruises, 2 specific Anticyclonic Eddies (AEs) tracked by satellites images during 4 years were mainly studied by mean of vertical sections, performed inside AEs and in the surrounding smaller structures such as sub-mesoscale filaments and small-scale shear eddies. These sections helped describing the hydrological and biogeocheminal structures of eddies according to the seasons and the surrounding dynamics, knowing their historical circulation in and/or out of the Algerian Current. With benefit of this first stage of the study, when an AE flowed throughout a 9-mooring network (lines 50 km-spaced), including 50 currentmeters down to the bottom, it is possible to comprehend its signature at fine spacio-temporal scale. The presented analysis will focus on the temporal signal induced by these eddies recorded on 4 autonomous CTD/Fluorometers, located in the central mooring of the network, in the upper layer. The temporal analysis will apply recent analysis methods like the Empirical Mode Decomposition that works with gappy records, and help filtering the data as well. This study will show how much the seasonal signal and the (sub)mesoscale-induced time variability can be comparable in this area. It will also explain how eddies history can play a role in the observed signature at a given time.

Abstract: A new methodology using a combination of debiased non-Bayesian retrieval, DINEOF (Data Interpolating Empirical Orthogonal Functions) and multifractal fusion has been used to obtain Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) Sea Surface Salinity (SSS) fields over the North Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. The debiased non-Bayesian retrieval mitigates the systematic errors produced by the contamination of the land over the sea. In addition, this retrieval improves the coverage by means of multiyear statistical filtering criteria. This methodology allows obtaining SMOS SSS fields in the Mediterranean Sea. However, the resulting SSS suffers from a seasonal (and other time-dependent) bias. This time-dependent bias has been characterized by means of specific Empirical Orthogonal Functions (EOFs). Finally, high resolution Sea Surface Temperature (OSTIA SST) maps have been used for improving the spatial and temporal resolution of the SMOS SSS maps. The presented methodology practically reduces the error of the SMOS SSS in the Mediterranean Sea by half. As a result, the SSS dynamics described by the new SMOS maps in the Algerian Basin and the Balearic Front agrees with the one described by in situ SSS, and the mesoscale structures described by SMOS in the Alboran Sea and in the Gulf of Lion coincide with the ones described by the high resolution remotely-sensed SST images (AVHRR). Abstract: International audience; Les risques hydrométéorologiques sont au coeur du programme de recherche HyMeX sur le cycle de l'eau en Méditerranée. HyMeX a pour ambition d'améliorer leur prévision, de mieux connaître leur variabilité à l'échelle pluriannuelle et de renseigner sur leur évolution, dans le contexte du changement climatique. À cette fin, deux campagnes de mesures dédiées à ces événements extrêmes (SOP1 : pluies intenses et crues rapides ; SOP2 : vents forts et formation d'eaux denses) sont organisées en Méditerranée nord-occidentale, entre septembre 2012 et mars 2013.
