Plants have evolved a suite of photoreceptors to perceive information from the surrounding light conditions. The aim of this study was to examine photomorphogenic effects of light quality on the growth of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) seedlings representing southern (60 °N) and northern (68 °N) origins in Finland. We measured the growth characteristics and the expression of light-responsive genes from seedlings grown under two LED light spectra: (1) Retarder (blue and red wavelengths in ratio 0.7) inducing compact growth, and (2) Booster (moderate in blue, green and far-red wavelengths, and high intensity of red light) promoting shoot elongation. The results show that root elongation, biomass, and branching were reduced under Retarder spectrum in the seedlings representing both origins, while inhibition in seed germination and shoot elongation was mainly detected in the seedlings of northern origin. The expression of ZTL and HY5 was related to Scots pine growth under both light spectra. Moreover, the expression of PHYN correlated with growth when exposed to Retarder, whereas CRY2 expression was associated with growth under Booster. Our data indicates that blue light and the deficiency of far-red light limit the growth of Scots pine seedlings and that northern populations are more sensitive to blue light than southern populations. Furthermore, the data analyses suggest that ZTL and HY5 broadly participate in the light-mediated growth regulation of Scots pine, whereas PHYN responses to direct sunlight and the role of CRY2 is in shade avoidance. Altogether, our study extends the knowledge of light quality and differential gene expression affecting the early growth of Scots pines representing different latitudinal origins. Global warming has been commonly accepted to facilitate species' range shifts across latitudes. Cross-latitudinal transplantations support this; many tree species can well adapt to new geographical areas. However, these studies fail to capture species' adaptations to new light environment because the experiments were not designed to explicitly separate species' responses to light and temperature. Here we tested reaction norms of tree seedlings in reciprocal transplantations 1,000 km apart from each other at two latitudes (60°N and 69°N). In contrast to past studies, we exposed our experimental plants to same temperature in both sites (temperature of 60°N growing site is recorded to adjust temperature of 69°N site in real time via Internet connection) while light environment (photoperiod, light quality) remained ambient. Shoot elongation and autumn coloration were studied in seedlings of two deciduous trees ( Betula pendula and Sorbus aucuparia), which were expected to respond differently to day length. Sorbus as a member of Rosaceae family was assumed to be indifferent to photoperiod, while Betula responds strongly to day length. We hypothesized that (1) southern and northern populations of both species perform differently; (2) southern populations perform better in both sites; (3) autumn phenology of southern populations may delay in the northern site; (4) and Sorbus aucuparia is less dependent on light environment. According to the hypotheses, shoot elongation of northern population was inherently low in both species. An evolutionary consequence of this may be a competitive success of southern populations under warming climate. Southern population of B. pendula was delayed in autumn coloration, but not in growth cessation. Sorbus aucuparia was less responsive to light environment. Based on available literature, ecology and economy of light emitting diode (LED) lights in plant foods production were assessed and compared to high pressure sodium (HPS) and compact fluorescent light (CFL) lamps. The assessment summarises that LEDs are superior compared to other lamp types. LEDs are ideal in luminous efficiency, life span and electricity usage. Mercury, carbon dioxide and heat emissions are also lowest in comparison to HPS and CFL lamps. This indicates that LEDs are indeed economic and eco-friendly lighting devices. The present review indicates also that LEDs have many practical benefits compared to other lamp types. In addition, they are applicable in many purposes in plant foods production. The main focus of the review is the targeted use of LEDs in order to enrich phytochemicals in plants. This is an expedient to massive improvement in production efficiency, since it diminishes the number of plants per phytochemical unit. Consequently, any other production costs (e.g. growing space, water, nutrient and transport) may be reduced markedly. Finally, 24 research articles published between 2013 and 2017 were reviewed for targeted use of LEDs in the specific, i.e. blue range (400-500 nm) of spectrum. The articles indicate that blue light is efficient in enhancing the accumulation of health beneficial phytochemicals in various species. Approx. 50 papers (found from Scopus) published since 1990 were reviewed to determine whether or not nitrogen additions benefit frost hardiness in some plant species. The results varied according to species, timing of the effect, nitrogen source and plant tissue concentration. The key finding is that in 40% of reported cases nitrogen supply increased frost hardiness, while in 29% of cases nitrogen had no effect on frost hardiness. Together these findings comprise 69%, implying that in the majority of cases nitrogen additions are not deleterious but actually improve frost hardiness, especially in autumn. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: NaCl is spread on the northern roads as a winter de-icing agent. Na+ stress may occur in roadside forests especially during growing season, because snowmelt increases Na+ concentrations in the roadside forest soil. To simulate summertime Na+ stress and its effect on viability and anthocyanin concentrations, bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus L.) plants were subjected to NaCl (0, 6, 30 and 60gm−2) in a boreal mesic heath forest in northern Finland (65°N). It was hypothesised that Na+ stress decreases tissue water content (TWC) in below- and aboveground stems, where resulting water stress increases anthocyanin level for osmotic regulation. Uptake of Na+ from the soil to the below- and aboveground stems was detected by a fast sequential atomic absorption spectrometry. Na+ accumulated in belowground stems, but it was translocated into the aboveground stems to a lesser extent. At the end of the growing season, TWC increased in belowground stems and decreased in aboveground stems. Also anthocyanin concentrations decreased in aboveground stems. The viability of the aboveground stems decreased to 30% along with the Na+ accumulation. Despite the strong viability response in aboveground stems, TWC was constant in the middle of the growing season and decreased relatively little at the end of the growing season. It is thus proposed that direct effect of Na+ ions, rather than Na+-induced water stress, is the primary reason behind the strong viability response and a severe salt stress in bilberry. Removal of blue light (400–500nm) induced shoot elongation of 2-year-old Scots pine (Pinus sylvestrisL.) seedlings, which was not related to resource acquisition (carbohydrates, C/N ratio and soluble proteins) and frost hardening. The seedlings were grown in northern Finland (64°N) in plexiglass chambers, either orange in colour or transparent, during elongation and cold hardening periods in 2001. The orange chamber removed the blue wavelengths. The results suggest that the growth inhibiting effect of blue light on Scots pine elongation is probably a photomorphogenic regulation response; the removal of blue light did not affect the gas exchange and accumulation of growth resources. In addition, the removal of blue light also did not affect the physiological parameters (pigment composition, chlorophyll fluorescence and lipid peroxidation) measured during the preparation for winter. Malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration is a widely used method to analyse lipid peroxidation in biological material. In plant tissues, however, certain compounds (anthocyanins, carbohydrates) may interfere with measurements which may lead to an overestimation of the MDA levels. Two methods were compared for analysing lipid peroxidation, either uncorrected or corrected for interfering compounds. The comparison was performed in three separate experiments with respect to cold treatments (snow removal in winter, reacclimation in summer and cold acclimation in autumn) in bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus L.). During winter and autumn the methods seem to measure different compounds, but during active growth in the summer the difference between the methods was less. This is obviously due to carbohydrates which act as cryoprotectants and increase in concentration during cold acclimation as well as due to the anthocyanins. It is thus suggested that the validity of the uncorrected method to measure MDA and thereby lipid peroxidation is best in plant tissue which is in an active growth state. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Bilberry plants (Vaccinium myrtillus L.) at a field site in northern Finland (65°N) were subjected to nitrogen fertilization [6.5 mmol m-2 NH4NO3 × Ca(OH)2 at the beginning of 3 growing seasons in late May and to trace gas fumigation (CO2 and O3) for 5 months (May-September) in 1993-1995 in order to investigate frost resistance and glutathione concentrations during the winter hardening period, and to assess the correlation between these variables. Harvesting was performed twice in the autumn of both 1994 and 1995, and the two-year data for each harvest were pooled. The frost resistance of the bilberry stems increased by about 10°C during the hardening period between the two harvests. Nitrogen fertilization increased the frost resistance towards late autumn. The fumigation treatments had no marked effect on it. The combination of elevated CO2 and nitrogen fertilization induced a decrease in frost resistance. Increases in total glutathione concentrations and the proportion of reduced glutathione (GSH) in the stems were evident during hardening. Nitrogen fertilization positively affected the total glutathione concentration and the proportion of GSH at the beginning of the hardening period but the effect disappeared during the hardening process. Trace gas fumigation as such had no marked effect on glutathione concentration. Increases in glutathione concentrations during hardening did not correlate with frost resistance, possibly due to different timing of the appearence of the response to fertilization treatment, i.e.. glutathione responded in the beginning of hardening while frost resistance at the end. The lack of correlation with frost resistance, and especially the different responses to nitrogen fertilization, may reflect the indirect role of glutathione in the development of winter hardening, as a transport and storage form of reduced nitrogen and sulphur. Provenances of seedlings of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) from northern Finland (65°N) and cuttings from trees of the same species about 30 to 40 years in age were studied in 3 artificial deacclimation experiments during the winter and spring of 1994. The deacclimation conditions varied in terms of temperature rise and photoperiods. Frost resistance and the pH of the cell effusate were studied in order to investigate the possibility of a connection between them. Complete deacclimation was achieved, as shown by a frost resistance of -60°C to -65°C in the seedlings and -80°C in the cuttings at the beginning of the experiment and decreased to above -10°C by the end. The frost resistance and pH of the cell effusate responded significantly to the increase in temperature that marked the onset of the deacclimation process, whereas the response to different photoperiods was only slight. A highly significant correlation was found between frost resistance and the pH of the cell effusate. These variables were also signifcantly correlated with the freezing test temperature, indicating the condition of plasmalemma and tonoplast; and with sampling day, indicating the response to deacclimation. In the light of these findings, it is concluded that the pH of the cell effusate with certain reservations, can be used as a time saving, alternative viability test when determining frost resistance. Abstract: A snow manipulation experiment aimed to assess risks of direct freezing injury, freeze-induced dehydration and winter desiccation in the absence of snow cover on lingonberry (Vaccinium vitis-idaea). Frames with sheet-plastic sides and removable lids were used in this experiment for two purposes: to prevent accumulation of snow in mid-winter and to provide extra heat during early spring. Leaves were analyzed for frost hardiness, tissue water content and osmotic concentrations, and photoinhibition (Fv/Fm) during the period from the 10th of February to the 7th of April. The natural snow accumulation was low indicated by a minor difference in minimum temperatures between the frame treatment and naturally snow-covered plots. The heating effect of the frames started gradually at the end of February along with increasing solar elevation angles, and was highest at the beginning of April. Frost hardiness peaked in March as a consequence of cold periods, but it was practically lost by the beginning of April. Tissue water content decreased gradually at first, becoming greatly decreased later due to the extra heat. In accordance, the tissue osmotic concentrations increased first gradually, followed by a dramatic increase. Photoinhibition increased uniformly with increasing solar radiation, but at the end showed a sharp increment within a few days, obviously also indicating the effect of heating. It was concluded that neither lethal freezing stress nor significant freeze-induced dehydration occurred during the experiment. However, plants that overwintered without snow suffered from severe winter desiccation injuries due to the combination of solar heat and frozen soil. Although the desiccation stress was possibly a lethal factor, it was preceded by long-term and continued photoinhibition. It was concluded that during overwintering, chamaephyte species may suffer from both freezing and winter desiccation in the absence of protecting snow cover. However, during mild winters provided by climatic change scenarios, the risk of winter desiccation will be more probable. In relation to the future climate, it was concluded that winter desiccation and photoinhibition may develop gradually during a snowless winter and would, even if they did not reach a lethal level by themselves, possibly reduce frost hardiness. Abstract: Nickel (Ni) may impair plant water balance through detrimental effects on the belowground level. Bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus L.) plants were grown in a mesic heath forest-type soil and subjected to Ni sulphate (NiSO4·6H2O) concentrations of 0, 10, 50, 100 and 500mgm−2 during an entire growing season in northern Finland (65°N). Biomass of belowground rhizomes, and tissue water content (TWC) and anthocyanin concentrations of aerial shoots were determined from mature plants in order to study rhizospheric Ni stress, and its possible long-distance effects on aerial shoots. As the major proportion of biomass of bilberry is invested in belowground parts, it was hypothesised that Ni-induced rhizospheric disturbance causes water stress in aerial shoots and increases their anthocyanin concentrations for osmotic regulation. Uptake of Ni from the soil to the rhizome and aerial shoots was measured with X-ray fluorescence spectrometry. Ni concentrations in the soil and rhizome exhibited a dose–response relationship, but the concentrations in the rhizome were about 10-fold lower (<3mgNikg−1) than those in the soil (<30mgNikg−1). Translocation of Ni from the rhizome to aerial shoots did not occur, as Ni concentrations in shoots remained at 1mgNikg−1. Although Ni concentrations in the rhizome were below the threshold values of Ni toxicity (i.e. 10–50mgNikg−1), Ni decreased the rhizome biomass. Anthocyanins decreased in aerial shoots along with the Ni accumulation in the rhizome, while TWC was unaffected. The result suggests that anthocyanins are not involved in osmotic regulation under Ni stress, since anthocyanins in aerial shoots responded to the Ni concentrations in the rhizome despite the lack of water stress. Abstract: Seedlings of five mountain birch populations (Betula pubescens Ehrh. ssp. czerepanovii) from Fennoscandia and Iceland were raised and grown at natural daylengths at Tromsø, Norway (69°N) and different temperatures during late summer and fall season, followed by winter temperature treatment at ambient and +4°C above ambient temperatures at Bergen, Norway (60°N). The experiment took place during two seasons (2000/01 and 2001/02). The following summer shoot and biomass growth were reduced as a result of winter warming and subsequent premature dehardening in early flushing provenances and treatments. Biomass increased in plants grown at low hardening temperature when compared with high temperature treatment. As a conclusion, increased winter temperatures would tend to increase the risk of spring frost damage and reduce growth in birch seedlings, because the differences between the frost hardening and ambient temperatures are decreasing, and because the time from budbreak to dehardening is shortened. Two-and 3-year-old Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) seedlings were grown in plexiglass chambers and control plots at two study sites in northern Finland. The chambers were made of either orange or transparent plexiglass. The former removed the blue wavelengths (400–500nm) of incoming sunlight, while the latter was transparent to all visible wavelengths. The removal of blue reduces the total amount of incoming light. This may theoretically enhance etiolation responses (i.e. increased stem elongation and reduced leaf development) in the seedlings grown under blue light depletion. Artificial removal of blue light did increase elongation of the main stem, although only at the sub-arctic latitude (69°N) of the experiment, not at the mid-boreal (64°N) latitude. However, elongation of the lateral branches, needle area and the weight of the new stem and needles were also increased in the seedlings grown in orange chambers at the sub-arctic latitude. Therefore, the increased elongation of the main stem of the seedlings grown under blue light depletion cannot be attributed to etiolation alone. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Deacclimation of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) in northern Finland (65°N) was studied from the perspective of protein metabolism, which was related to nitrogen fertilization. Two-year-old seedlings were fertilized with calcium ammonium nitrate (0, 442 and 884 kg N ha-1) in the summer prior to the study. Needles were harvested for analyses at 3-week intervals during the natural deacclimation period from mid-March to the beginning of June 1998. Deacclimation was followed by monitoring various physiological variables: freezing resistance decreased and osmotic potential increased during the experiment and needle dry weight increased from bud flushing onwards. The concentration of soluble proteins in needles was higher in fertilized seedlings but decreased transiently in the 884 kg N ha-1 fertilized seedlings before budbreak. The abundance of several small polypeptides (17–32 kDa) decreased in the spring. A 60-kDa protein, identified by immunoblotting as a dehydrin, was detected in all treatments. The quantity of this dehydrin decreased with resumption of growth, along with the appearance of 50- and 56-kDa dehydrins. The concentration of these dehydrins decreased during dehardening more rapidly in fertilized seedlings than in the control plants. The fertilized seedlings started to grow earlier than the unfertilized plants. Deciduous trees prepare for winter by breaking up chlorophyll and other nitrogen-rich compounds, which are resorbed for storage. Timing is important as senescence too early will waste growing season, while senescence too late risks the loss of the leaf resources to frost. While plants of temperate and boreal regions use decreasing day length as a cue of approaching winter, we show that decreasing temperature may also play a role in the variability of leaf senescence. We investigated the timing of autumnal decrease in photosynthetic efficiency and the concentration of chlorophyll and total carotenoids in nine common lilac (Syringa vulgaris L.) trees over two consecutive years. Day length explained a greater proportion of photosynthetic efficiency, but temperature had a significant additional role, which seems to be related to individual differences. Precipitation and cloudiness did not explain photosynthetic efficiency. Photosynthetic efficiency was higher outside the canopy and at high and middle elevations than inside and low elevations of the canopy. Late onset of senescence led to a steeper decline in photosynthetic efficiency than early senescence. The onset of decline in photosynthetic efficiency differed between years, but there was no difference in the steepest rate of change in photosynthetic efficiency with respect to sampling year or location. Contributions of day-length vs temperature to leaf senescence have important consequences for the adaptability and invasibility of deciduous trees in a changing climate, especially at the edge of species distributions. Species-specific differences in synthesis of flavonoids and phenolic acids were studied under lengthening periods of enhanced blue light in a greenhouse experiment in Northern Finland in the autumn of 2012. The aim was to compare red- and blue- weighted light spectra in relation to biosynthesis of the compounds. The species studied were red leaf lettuce and basil. There were five treatments for these inter-lighting LED manipulations using traditional high pressure sodium lamps as background light sources. Two treatments were exposed for the entire experimental period with (1) red- and (2) blue- weighted light for 48 days. The other three treatments were initiated with red- weighted light, but after each subsequent 12 day sub-period, one red-weighted treatment was switched to blue, resulting in the following treatments: 48, 36, 24, 12 and 0 days under enhanced blue light. Flavonoid and phenolic acid biosynthesis in plants were found to be species dependent. The most abundant compound in red leaf lettuce was cichoric acid (a dicaffeoyltartaric acid) while rosmaric acid (an ester of caffeic acid and 3,4-dihydroxyphenyllactic acid) dominated in basil. Other compounds detected also varied between the species. Red leaf lettuce was much more responsive to supplemental blue light. Based on these results, it is suggested that both blue and red light may be needed to regulate the accumulation of phenolics in basil. Some of the compounds detected accumulated continuously as a function of the spent time under supplemental blue light in red leaf lettuce, but not in basil. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study was to investigate plant frost hardiness responses to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, since the few results reported are largely contradictory. It was hypothesized that functional adaptation of life forms could explain these contradictions. Dwarf shrubs and tree seedlings, representing both evergreen and deciduous forms, were tested (Vaccinium vitis-idaea, Vaccinium myrtillus, Pinus sylvestris, Betula pubescens and its red form f. rubra). The research was performed in Sodankylä, Northern Finland (67°N), with enhanced UV-B- and UV-A-radiation treatments between 2002 and 2009. Plant frost hardiness was determined using the freeze-induced electrolyte leakage method in early autumn, during the onset of the frost hardening process. Additional physiological variables (malondialdehyde, glutathione, total phenols, C and N contents) were analyzed in V. vitis-idaea to explain the possible responses. These variables did not respond significantly to UV-radiation treatments, but explained the frost hardiness well (r2 = 0.678). The main finding was that frost hardiness decreased in the evergreen shrub V. vitis-idaea, particularly with enhanced UV-A radiation. No significant responses were observed with the other plants. Insulation provided by snow cover and tolerance of freezing by physiological acclimation allows Arctic plants to survive cold winter temperatures. However, both the protection mechanisms may be lost with winter climate change, especially during extreme winter warming events where loss of snow cover from snow melt results in exposure of plants to warm temperatures and then returning extreme cold in the absence of insulating snow. These events cause considerable damage to Arctic plants, but physiological responses behind such damage remain unknown. Here, we report simulations of extreme winter warming events using infrared heating lamps and soil warming cables in a sub-Arctic heathland. During these events, we measured maximum quantum yield of photosystem II (PSII), photosynthesis, respiration, bud swelling and associated bud carbohydrate changes and lipid peroxidation to identify physiological responses during and after the winter warming events in three dwarf shrub species: Empetrum hermaphroditum, Vaccinium vitis-idaea and Vaccinium myrtillus. Winter warming increased maximum quantum yield of PSII, and photosynthesis was initiated for E. hermaphroditum and V. vitis-idaea. Bud swelling, bud carbohydrate decreases and lipid peroxidation were largest for E. hermaphroditum, whereas V. myrtillus and V. vitis-idaea showed no or less strong responses. Increased physiological activity and bud swelling suggest that sub-Arctic plants can initiate spring-like development in response to a short winter warming event. Lipid peroxidation suggests that plants experience increased winter stress. The observed differences between species in physiological responses are broadly consistent with interspecific differences in damage seen in previous studies, with E. hermaphroditum and V. myrtillus tending to be most sensitive. This suggests that initiation of spring-like development may be a major driver in the damage caused by winter warming events that are predicted to become more frequent in some regions of the Arctic and that may ultimately drive plant community shifts. The influence of drought-related winter stress on growth, oxidative responses and possible after-effects in previous and current year stems of bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus L.) was studied in field conditions favorable for desiccation in winter. Bilberry plants were subjected to low temperatures, drought and irradiance under either grey or transparent plates in the absence of snow. Control plants wintered below a snow cover, as bilberry is susceptible to wintertime drought on account of its strategy to winter under snow. Bud phenology was observed early in the growing season and stem elongation was measured in autumn. Tissue water content, lipid peroxidation, anthocyanins, photosynthetic pigments, soluble proteins and activities of glutathione S-transferase and glutathione reductase were monitored during winter dormancy, onset of the growing season, active growth and frost hardening. Metabolic activity was delayed with regard to pigments, antioxidant enzymes and soluble proteins, bud burst was retarded and stem elongation was reduced in the plants that wintered without snow. The plants that wintered under snow showed the best annual stem growth, which was due to the high water content of their previous year stems, resulting in a low level of stress in their current year stems. Not only the previous year stems that were exposed to wintertime stress, but also new growth responded to the stress experienced by the plants in winter, indicating an after-effect of stress that plants were able to sense long after the ceasing of stress. Environmental manipulation experiments showed that species respond individualistically to each environmental-change variable. The greatest responses of plants were generally to nutrient, particularly nitrogen, addition. Summer warming experiments showed that woody plant responses were dominant and that mosses and lichens became less abundant. Responses to warming were controlled by moisture availability and snow cover. Many invertebrates increased population growth in response to summer warming, as long as desiccation was not induced. CO2and UV-B enrichment experiments showed that plant and animal responses were small. However, some microorganisms and species of fungi were sensitive to increased UV-B and some intensive mutagenic actions could, perhaps, lead to unexpected epidemic outbreaks. Tundra soil heating, CO2 enrichment and amendment with mineral nutrients generally accelerated microbial activity. Algae are likely to dominate cyanobacteria in milder climates. Expected increases in winter freeze-thaw cycles leading to ice-crust formation are likely to severely reduce winter survival rate and disrupt the population dynamics of many terrestrial animals. The individual of a species is the basic unit which responds to climate and UV-B changes, and it responds over a wide range of time scales. The diversity of animal, plant and microbial species appears to be low in the Arctic, and decreases from the boreal forests to the polar deserts of the extreme North but primitive species are particularly abundant. This latitudinal decline is associated with an increase in super-dominant species that occupy a wide range of habitats. Climate warming is expected to reduce the abundance and restrict the ranges of such species and to affect species at their northern range boundaries more than in the South: some Arctic animal and plant specialists could face extinction. Species most likely to expand into tundra are boreal species that currently exist as outlier populations in the Arctic. Many plant species have characteristics that allow them to survive short snow-free growing seasons, low solar angles, permafrost and low soil temperatures, low nutrient availability and physical disturbance. Many of these characteristics are likely to limit species' responses to climate warming, but mainly because of poor competitive ability compared with potential immigrant species. Terrestrial Arctic animals possess many adaptations that enable them to persist under a wide range of temperatures in the Arctic. Many escape unfavorable weather and resource shortage by winter dormancy or by migration. The biotic environment of Arctic animal species is relatively simple with few enemies, competitors, diseases, parasites and available food resources. Terrestrial Arctic animals are likely to be most vulnerable to warmer and drier summers, climatic changes that interfere with migration routes and staging areas, altered snow conditions and freeze-thaw cycles in winter, climate-induced disruption of the seasonal timing of reproduction and development, and influx of new competitors, predators, parasites and diseases.
