Search

Nematic phases, where electrons in a solid spontaneously break rotational symmetry while preserving the translational symmetry, exist in several families of unconventional superconductors [1, 2]. Although superconductivity mediated by nematic fluctuations is well established theoretically [3-7], it has yet to be unambiguously identified experimentally [8, 9]. A major challenge is that nematicity is often intertwined with other degrees of freedom, such as magnetism and charge order. The FeSe$_{1-x}$S$_x$ family of iron based superconductors provides a unique opportunity to explore this concept, as it features an isolated nematic phase that can be suppressed by sulfur substitution at a quantum critical point (QCP) near $x_c = 0.17$, where nematic fluctuations are the largest [10-12]. Here, we performed scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements to visualize Boguliubov quasiparticle interference patterns, from which we determined the momentum structure of the superconducting gap near the Brillouin zone $\Gamma$ point of FeSe$_{0.81}$S$_{0.19}$. The results reveal an anisotropic, near nodal gap with minima that are $45^\circ$ rotated with respect to the Fe-Fe direction, characteristic of a nematic pairing interaction, contrary to the usual isotropic gaps due to spin mediated pairing in other tetragonal Fe-based superconductors. The results are also in contrast with pristine FeSe, where the pairing is mediated by spin fluctuations and the gap minima are aligned with the Fe-Fe direction. Therefore, the measured gap structure demonstrates not only a fundamental change of the pairing mechanism across the phase diagram of FeSe$_{1-x}$S$_x$, but it also indicates the existence of superconductivity mediated by nematic fluctuations in FeSe$_{0.81}$S$_{0.19}$.

LaNiGa$_2$ is superconductor that breaks time-reversal symmetry in the superconducting state without any known nearby magnetism. Recently, single crystals of LaNiGa$_2$ have been synthesized, revealing a nonsymmorphic Cmcm space group. Here, we report measurements of the electronic structure of LaNiGa$_2$ throughout the three-dimensional Brillouin zone (BZ) using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Our findings show broad consistency with density functional theory (DFT) calculations and provide evidence for degeneracies in the electronic structure that are predicted from the space group. The calculations also predict four Fermi surfaces which cross the purported nodal plane and should therefore form two degenerate pairs. We report evidence for those predicted symmetry enforced degeneracies as well as accidental near degeneracies throughout the BZ. These degeneracies and near-degeneracies may play a role in the pairing mechanism of LaNiGa$_2$. Technologies that function at room temperature often require magnets with a high Curie temperature, $T_\mathrm{C}$, and can be improved with better materials. Discovering magnetic materials with a substantial $T_\mathrm{C}$ is challenging because of the large number of candidates and the cost of fabricating and testing them. Using the two largest known data sets of experimental Curie temperatures, we develop machine-learning models to make rapid $T_\mathrm{C}$ predictions solely based on the chemical composition of a material. We train a random forest model and a $k$-NN one and predict on an initial dataset of over 2,500 materials and then validate the model on a new dataset containing over 3,000 entries. The accuracy is compared for multiple compounds' representations ("descriptors") and regression approaches. A random forest model provides the most accurate predictions and is not improved by dimensionality reduction or by using more complex descriptors based on atomic properties. A random forest model trained on a combination of both datasets shows that cobalt-rich and iron-rich materials have the highest Curie temperatures for all binary and ternary compounds. An analysis of the model reveals systematic error that causes the model to over-predict low-$T_\mathrm{C}$ materials and under-predict high-$T_\mathrm{C}$ materials. For exhaustive searches to find new high-$T_\mathrm{C}$ materials, analysis of the learning rate suggests either that much more data is needed or that more efficient descriptors are necessary., Comment: 9 pages, 11 figures, accepted to Applied Physics Letters, special issue "Accelerate Materials Discovery and Phenomena"

In recent times, transformer networks have achieved state-of-the-art performance in a wide range of natural language processing tasks. Here we present a workflow based on the fine-tuning of BERT models for different downstream tasks, which results in the automated extraction of structured information from unstructured natural language in scientific literature. Contrary to existing methods for the automated extraction of structured compound-property relations from similar sources, our workflow does not rely on the definition of intricate grammar rules. Hence, it can be adapted to a new task without requiring extensive implementation efforts and knowledge. We test our data-extraction workflow by automatically generating a database for Curie temperatures and one for band gaps. These are then compared with manually-curated datasets and with those obtained with a state-of-the-art rule-based method. Furthermore, in order to showcase the practical utility of the automatically extracted data in a material-design workflow, we employ them to construct machine-learning models to predict Curie temperatures and band gaps. In general we find that, although more noisy, automatically extracted datasets can grow fast in volume and that such volume partially compensates for the inaccuracy in downstream tasks., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures

One-dimensional (1D) organic metal halide hybrids exhibit strongly anisotropic optical properties, highly efficient light emission, and large Stokes shift, holding promises for novel photodetection and lighting applications. However, the fundamental mechanisms governing their unique optical properties and in particular the impacts of surface effects are not understood. Here, we investigate 1D C4N2H14PbBr4 by polarization-dependent time-averaged and time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) spectroscopy, as a function of photoexcitation energy. Surprisingly, we find that the emission under photoexcitation polarized parallel to the 1D metal halide chains can be either stronger or weaker than that under perpendicular polarization, depending on the excitation energy. We attribute the excitation-energy-dependent anisotropic emission to fast surface recombination, supported by first-principles calculations of optical absorption in this material. The fast surface recombination is directly confirmed by TRPL measurements, when the excitation is polarized parallel to the chains. Our comprehensive studies provide a more complete picture for a deeper understanding of the optical anisotropy in 1D organic metal halide hybrids.

We combine structural and magnetic measurements to compare the different magnetic phase diagrams between the pressure and substitution studies in CeTiGe3. We report on the structural, magnetic, and electrical transport properties of single crystals of CeTi1-xVxGe3 (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.9, and 1), and of polycrystalline samples (x = 0.5, 0.6, 0.7, 0.8), as well as structural properties of CeTiGe3 under pressure up to 9 GPa. The ferromagnetic ordering in CeTiGe3 is suppressed with V doping in CeTi1-xVxGe3, and suggests a possible ferromagnetic quantum critical point near x = 0.45. We perform a detailed crystalline electric field (CEF) analysis, and the magnetic susceptibility data in pure CeTiGe3 and CeVGe3 can be well explained by the CEF model. The proposed CEF energy levels suggest that there is a gradual change of the ground state from 5/2 state in CeTiGe3 to 1/2 state in CeVGe3, and a suppression of CEF splitting energies near the quantum critical region. When hydrostatic pressure is used instead of chemical substitution, the quantum critical point is avoided by the appearance of magnetic phases above around 4.1 GPa. In the substitution study, the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic regions are well separated, whereas they touch in the pressure study. We observe a different trend in the temperature dependence of the resistivity maximum in both studies, suggesting that the CEF splitting energy is suppressed by V substitution but enhanced by pressure. We also observe different responses in lattice constants between the two studies, highlighting the fact that substitution effects cannot be reduced to chemical pressure effects only. Nevertheless, when the magnetic phase diagrams of both hydrostatic pressure and substitution are compared, we find a common critical lattice constant c = 5.78 A where the ferromagnetic ordering is suppressed in both studies., Comment: 18 pages, 15 figures, published on Physics Review B

Chemical modifications such as intercalation can be used to modify surface properties or to further functionalize the surface states of topological insulators. Using ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, we report copper migration in $\text{Cu}_{x}\text{Bi}_2\text{Se}_3$, which occurs on a timescale of hours to days after initial surface cleaving. The increase in near-surface copper proceeds along with the oxidation of the sample surface and large changes in the selenium content. These complex changes are further modelled with core-level spectroscopy simulations, which suggest a composition gradient near the surface which develops with oxygen exposure. Our results shed light on a new phenomenon that must be considered for intercalated topological insulators$\unicode{x2014}$and intercalated materials in general$\unicode{x2014}$that surface chemical composition can change when specimens are exposed to ambient conditions.

We report bulk magnetization measurements and spatially resolved measurements of magnetic domains in Co3Sn2S2 single crystals. The results indicate that a previously reported magnetic anomaly around 130 K is due to an anomalous domain wall depinning upon cooling. Our measurements also reveal a hysteresis between field-cooled-cooling (FCC) and field-cooled-warming (FCW) magnetization curves acquired under a constant magnetic field below 300 Oe. This observation rules out the possibility that the anomaly stems from a second-order phase transition. Our results further suggest that changes in the shape of hysteresis loops from 5 K to 170 K are caused by an unusual temperature-dependent domain nucleation field that changes sign around 130 K. The Kerr rotation images of the magnetic domains confirm that the domain walls depin between 120 K and 140 K., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

We report on a solution-growth based method to synthesise single crystals of Y$_2$Co$_3$ and on its structural and magnetic properties. We find that Y$_2$Co$_3$ crystallizes in the La2Ni3-type orthorhombic structure with space group Cmce (No. 64), with Co forming distorted kagome lattices. Y$_2$Co$_3$ orders antiferromagnetically below $T_N$ = 252 K. Magnetization measurements reveal that the moments are primarily aligned along the b axis with evidence for some canting. Band-structure calculations indicate that ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic orders are nearly degenerate, at odds with experimental results. Magnetization measurements under pressure up to 1 GPa reveal that the N/'eel temperature decreases with the slope of -1.69 K/GPa. We observe a field-induced spin-flop transition in the magnetization measurements at 1.5 K and 21 T with magnetic field along the b direction. The magnetization is not saturated up to 35 T, indicating that the antiferromagnetic ordering in Y$_2$Co$_3$ is quite robust, which is surprising for such a Co-rich intermetallic.

Sub-oxides with the anti-perovskite structure constitute a large part of the interstitial stabilized compounds with novel chemical and physical properties, especially in the systems containing rare earth elements and/or early transition metal elements. A new sub-oxide compound, (Ce$_{0.85}$Ti$_{0.15}$)Ge$_3$O$_{0.5}$, is synthesized by flux growth. The compound crystallizes in a cubic structure which can be considered as an ordered vacancy variant of anti-perovskite-structure or an ordered interstitial variant of the Cu$_3$Au type, with a space group of Fm-3m (225). The structure is refined from X-ray single crystal methods. The compound may be considered as a compound stabilized by chemical pressure generated by the substitution and the interstitials atoms. The stability of the compounds in RTr$_3$ systems (R = rare earth elements except Pm and Sc, Tr = tetrel elements such as Si, Ge, Sn, Pb) seem to be highly correlated to the ratio of the rare earth elements' radii to the main group elements' atomic radii. The magnetic property of the compound confirms the 4$^+$ valence of the Ce atoms. Unconventional superconductors have Cooper pairs with lower symmetries than in conventional superconductors. In most unconventional superconductors, the additional symmetry breaking occurs in relation to typical ingredients such as strongly correlated Fermi liquid phases, magnetic fluctuations, or strong spin-orbit coupling in noncentrosymmetric structures. In this article, we show that the time-reversal symmetry breaking in the superconductor LaNiGa$_2$ is enabled by its previously unknown topological electronic band structure. Our single crystal diffraction experiments indicate a nonsymmorphic crystal structure, in contrast to the previously reported symmorphic structure. The nonsymmorphic symmetries transform the $k_z=\pi/c$ plane of the Brillouin zone boundary into a node-surface. Band-structure calculations reveal that distinct Fermi surfaces become degenerate on the node-surface and form Dirac lines and a Dirac loop at the Fermi level. Two symmetry related Dirac points remain degenerate under spin-orbit coupling. ARPES measurements confirm the calculations and provide evidence for the Fermi surface degeneracies on the node-surface. These unique topological features enable an unconventional superconducting gap in which time-reversal symmetry can be broken in the absence of other typical ingredients. LaNiGa$_2$ is therefore a topological crystalline superconductor that breaks time-reversal symmetry without any overlapping magnetic ordering or fluctuations. Our findings will enable future discoveries of additional topological superconductors.

Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ is a magnetic Weyl semimetal, in which ferromagnetic ordering at 177K is predicted to stabilize Weyl points. We perform temperature and spatial dependent angle--resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements through the Curie temperature ($T_c$), which show large band shifts and renormalization concomitant with the onset of magnetism. We argue that Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ evolves from a Mott ferromagnet below $T_c$ to a correlated metallic state above $T_c$. To understand the magnetism, we derive a tight-binding model of Co-$3d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbitals on the kagome lattice. At the filling obtained by first-principles calculations, this model reproduces the ferromagnetic ground state, and results in the reduction of Coulomb interactions due to cluster effects. Using a disordered local moment simulation, we show how this reduced Hubbard-$U$ leads to a collapse of the bands across the magnetic transition, resulting in a correlated state which carries associated characteristic photoemission signatures that are distinct from those of a simple lifting of exchange splitting. The behavior of topology across $T_c$ is discussed in the context of this description of the magnetism., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures

New determination of the magnetic anisotropy from single crystals of (Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$B alloys are presented. The anomalous temperature dependence of the anisotropy constant is discussed using the standard Callen-Callen theory, which is shown to be insufficient to explain the experimental results. A more material specific study using first-principles calculations with disordered moments approach gives a much more consistent interpretation of the experimental data. Since the intrinsic properties of the alloys with $x=0.3-0.35$ are promising for permanent magnets applications, initial investigation of the extrinsic properties are described, in particular the crystallization of melt spun ribbons with Cu, Al, and Ti additions. Previous attempts at developing a significant hysteresis have been unsuccessful in this system. Our melt-spinning experiment indicates that this system shows rapid crystallization.

Solid state ionic approaches for modifying ion distributions in getter/oxide heterostructures offer exciting potentials to control material properties. Here we report a simple, scalable approach allowing for total control of the superconducting transition in optimally doped YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-{\delta}}$ (YBCO) films via a chemically-driven ionic migration mechanism. Using a thin Gd capping layer of up to 20 nm deposited onto 100 nm thick epitaxial YBCO films, oxygen is found to leach from deep within the YBCO. Progressive reduction of the superconducting transition is observed, with complete suppression possible for a sufficiently thick Gd layer. These effects arise from the combined impact of redox-driven electron doping and modification of the YBCO microstructure due to oxygen migration and depletion. This work demonstrates an effective ionic control of superconductivity in oxides, an interface induced effect that goes well into the quasi-bulk regime, opening up possibilities for electric field manipulation., Comment: 26 pages, 5 figures

The Ce$_{3-x}$Mg$_x$Co$_{9}$ system evolves from a Pauli paramagnetic ground state for $x = 0$ to a ferromagnetic ground state for $x\approx0.80$ in single phase, polycrystalline samples [Phys. Rev. Applied 9, 024023 (2018)]. In order to better understand this behavior, single crystalline samples of Ce$_{3-x}$Mg$_x$Co$_{9}$ for \textit{x} = 0.01, 0.16, 0.24, 0.35, 0.43 and 0.50 were grown using the flux growth technique, and electrical transport and magnetic properties were studied. The \textit{T}$_C$-\textit{x} phase diagram we infer shows that the system has a quantum phase transition near \textit{x} = 0.35, transforming to a ferromagnetic ground state., Comment: 13 pages, 13 figures

We have grown a series of nickel substituted single crystals of the layered ferromagnet (FM) Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$. The large single crystalline samples of (Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$)$_3$GeTe$_2$ with $x = 0-0.84$ were characterized with single crystal X-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistance and muon spin spectroscopy. We find Fe can be continuously substituted with Ni with only minor structural variation. In addition, FM order is suppressed from $T_\mathrm{C}=212$~K for $x=0$ down to $T_\mathrm{C}=50$~K for $x=0.3$, which is accompanied with a strong suppression of saturated and effective moment, and Curie-Weiss temperature. Beyond $x=0.3$, the FM order is continuously smeared into a FM cluster glass phase, with a nearly full magnetic volume fraction. We attribute the observed change in the nature of magnetic order to the intrinsically disordered structure of Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$ and subsequent dilution effects from the Ni substitution.

In this paper, we present a coupled experimental/theoretical investigation of pressure effect on the ferromagnetism of LaCrGe3 and LaCrSb3 compounds. The magnetic, electronic, elastic and mechanical properties of LaCrGe3 and LaCrSb3 at ambient condition are studied by first-principles density functional theory calculations. The pressure dependences of the magnetic properties of LaCrGe3 and LaCrSb3 are also investigated. The ferromagnetism in LaCrGe3 is rather fragile with a ferro- to paramagnetic transition at a relatively small pressure (around 7 GPa from our calculations, and 2 GPa in experiments). The key parameter controlling the magnetic properties of LaCrGe3 is found to be the proximity of the Cr DOS to the Fermi surface, a proximity that is strongly correlated to the distance between Cr atoms along the c-axis, suggesting that there would be a simple way to suppress magnetism in systems with one dimensional arrangement of magnetic atoms. By contrast, the ferromagnetism in LaCrSb3 is not fragile. Our calculation results are consistent with our experimental results and demonstrate the feasibility of using first-principles calculations to aid experimental explorations in screening for materials with fragile magnetism.

We report on the synthesis of single crystalline and polycrystalline samples of Ce$_{3-x}$Mg$_x$Co$_9$ solid solution ($0\leq x \lesssim 1.4$) and characterization of their structural and magnetic properties. The crystal structure remains rhombohedral in the whole composition range and Mg partially replaces Ce in the 6\textit{c} site of the CeCo$_3$ structure. Ferromagnetism is induced by Mg substitutions starting as low as $x=0.18$ and reaching a Curie temperature as high as $450$\,K for $x=1.35$. Measurements on single crystals with $x=1.34$ and $T_\textrm{C}=440$\,K indicate an axial magnetic anisotropy with the anisotropy field of $6$\,T and a magnetization of $6$\,$\mu_B/$f.u. at $300$\,K. Coercicity is observed in the polycrystalline samples consistent with the observed axial magnetic anisotropy. Our discovery of ferromagnetism with large axial magnetic anisotropy induced by substituting a rare-earth element by Mg is a very promising result in the search of inexpensive permanent-magnet materials and suggests other non-magnetic phases, similar to CeCo$_3$, may also conceal nearby ferromagnetic phases., Comment: Physical Review Applied 2018

We report the temperature-pressure-magnetic field phase diagram of the ferromagnetic Kondo-lattice CeTiGe$_3$ determined by means of electrical resistivity measurements. Measurements up to $\sim$ 5.8 GPa reveal a rich phase diagram with multiple phase transitions. At ambient pressure, CeTiGe$_3$ orders ferromagnetically at $T_\text{C}$ = 14 K. Application of pressure suppresses $T_\text{C}$, but a pressure induced ferromagnetic quantum criticality is avoided by the appearance of two new successive transitions for $p$ $>$ 4.1 GPa that are probably antiferromagnetic in nature. These two transitions are suppressed under pressure, with the lower temperature phase being fully suppressed above 5.3 GPa. The critical pressures for the presumed quantum phase transitions are $p_1$ $\cong$ 4.1 GPa and $p_2$ $\cong$ 5.3 GPa. Above 4.1 GPa, application of magnetic field shows a tricritical point evolving into a wing structure phase with a quantum tricritical point at 2.8 T at 5.4 GPa, where the first order antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic transition changes into the second order antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic transition.

We report the growth, structure and characterization of BaZnGa, identifying it as the sole known ternary compound in the Ba-Zn-Ga system. Single crystals of BaZnGa can be grown out of excess Ba-Zn and adopt a tI36 structure type. There are three unique Ba sites and three M\,=\,Zn/Ga sites. Using DFT calculations we can argue that whereas one of these three M sites is probably solely occupied by Ga, the other two M sites, most likely, have mixed Zn/Ga occupancy. Temperature dependent resistivity and magnetization measurements suggest that BaZnGa is a poor metal with no electronic or magnetic phase transitions between 2\,K and 300\,K.

The pressure dependence of the structural, magnetic and superconducting transitions and of the superconducting upper critical field were studied in sulfur-substituted Fe(Se$_{1-x}$S$_{x}$). Resistance measurements were performed on single crystals with three substitution levels ($x$=0.043, 0.096, 0.12) under hydrostatic pressures up to 1.8 GPa and in magnetic fields up to 9 T, and compared to data on pure FeSe. Our results illustrate the effects of chemical and physical pressure on Fe(Se$_{1-x}$S$_{x}$). On increasing sulfur content, magnetic order in the low-pressure range is strongly suppressed to a small dome-like region in the phase diagrams. However, $T_s$ is much less suppressed by sulfur substitution and $T_c$ of Fe(Se$_{1-x}$S$_{x}$) exhibits similar non-monotonic pressure dependence with a local maximum and a local minimum present in the low pressure range for all $x$. The local maximum in $T_c$ coincides with the emergence of the magnetic order above $T_c$. At this pressure the slope of the upper critical field decreases abruptly. The minimum of $T_c$ correlates with a broad maximum of the upper critical field slope normalized by $T_c$.

We report the temperature-pressure phase diagram of CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ established using high pressure electrical resistivity, magnetization and high energy x-ray diffraction measurements up to 6 GPa. With increasing pressure, both resistivity and magnetization data show that the bulk superconducting transition of CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ is suppressed and then disappears at $p$ $\gtrsim$ 4 GPa. High pressure x-ray data clearly indicate a phase transition to a collapsed tetragonal phase in CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ under pressure that coincides with the abrupt loss of bulk superconductivity near 4 GPa. The x-ray data, combined with resistivity data, indicate that the collapsed tetragonal transition line is essentially vertical, occuring at 4.0(5) GPa for temperatures below 150 K. Band structure calculations also find a sudden transition to a collapsed tetragonal state near 4 GPa, as As-As bonding takes place across the Ca-layer. Bonding across the K-layer only occurs for $p$ $\geq$ 12 GPa. These findings demonstrate a new type of collapsed tetragonal phase in CaKFe$_4$As$_4$: a half-collapsed-tetragonal phase.

ZrMnP and HfMnP single crystals are grown by a self-flux growth technique and structural as well as temperature dependent magnetic and transport properties are studied. Both compounds have an orthorhombic crystal structure. ZrMnP and HfMnP are ferromagnetic with Curie temperatures around $370$~K and $320$~K respectively. The spontaneous magnetizations of ZrMnP and HfMnP are determined to be $1.9$~$\mu_\textrm{B}$/f.u. and $2.1$~$\mu_\textrm{B}$/f.u. respectively at $50$~K. The magnetocaloric effect of ZrMnP in term of entropy change ($\Delta S$) is estimated to be $-6.7$ kJm$^{-3}$K$^{-1}$ around $369$~K. The easy axis of magnetization is [100] for both compounds, with a small anisotropy relative to the [010] axis. At $50$~K, the anisotropy field along the [001] axis is $\sim4.6$~T for ZrMnP and $\sim10$~T for HfMnP. Such large magnetic anisotropy is remarkable considering the absence of rare-earth elements in these compounds. The first principle calculation correctly predicts the magnetization and hard axis orientation for both compounds, and predicts the experimental HfMnP anisotropy field within 25 percent. More importantly, our calculations suggest that the large magnetic anisotropy comes primarily from the Mn atoms suggesting that similarly large anisotropies may be found in other 3d transition metal compounds.

The superconductor FeSe is of intense interest thanks to its unusual non-magnetic nematic state and potential for high temperature superconductivity. But its Cooper pairing mechanism has not been determined. Here we use Bogoliubov quasiparticle interference imaging to determine the Fermi surface geometry of the bands surrounding the $\Gamma = (0,0)$ and $X=(\pi / a_{Fe}, 0)$ points of FeSe, and to measure the corresponding superconducting energy gaps. We show that both gaps are extremely anisotropic but nodeless, and exhibit gap maxima oriented orthogonally in momentum space. Moreover, by implementing a novel technique we demonstrate that these gaps have opposite sign with respect to each other. We determined on the temperature-pressure-magnetic field ($T$-$p$-$H$) phase diagram of the ferromagnet LaCrGe$_3$ from electrical resistivity measurements on single crystals. In ferromagnetic systems, quantum criticality is avoided either by a change of the transition order, becoming of the first order at a tricritical point, or by the appearance of modulated magnetic phases. In the first case, the application of a magnetic field reveals a wing-structure phase diagram as seen in itinerant ferromagnets such as ZrZn$_2$ and UGe$_2$. In the second case, no tricritical wings have been observed so far. Our investigation of LaCrGe$_3$ reveals a double-wing structure indicating strong similarities with ZrZn$_2$ and UGe$_2$. But, unlike these, simpler systems, LaCrGe$_3$ is thought to exhibit a modulated magnetic phase under pressure which already precludes it from a pressure-driven paramagnetic-ferromagnetic quantum phase transition in zero field. As a result, the $T$-$p$-$H$ phase diagram of LaCrGe$_3$ shows both the wing structure as well as the appearance of new magnetic phases, providing the first example of this new possibility for the phase diagram of metallic quantum ferromagnets.

We study the evolution of the Kondo effect in heavy fermion compounds, Yb(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$Zn$_{20}$ (0$\leqslant$ x $\leqslant$ 1), by means of temperature-dependent electric resistivity and specific heat. The ground state of YbFe$_2$Zn$_{20}$ can be well described by a Kondo model with degeneracy $N$ = 8 and a $T_K\sim$30 K. In the presence of a very similar total CEF splitting with YbFe$_2$Zn$_{20}$, the ground state of YbCo$_2$Zn$_{20}$ is close to a Kondo state with degeneracy $N$ = 2 and a much lower $T_K\sim$ 2 K. Upon Co substitution, the coherence temperature of YbFe$_2$Zn$_{20}$ is suppressed, accompanied by an emerging Schottky-like feature in specific heat associated with the thermal depopulation of CEF levels upon cooling. For 0.4$\lesssim$ x $\lesssim$ 0.9, the ground state remains roughly the same which can be qualitatively understood by Kondo effect in the presence of CEF splitting. There is no clear indication of Kondo coherence observable in resistivity within this substitution range down to 500 mK. The coherence re-appears at around x$\gtrsim$ 0.9 and the coherence temperature increases with higher Co concentration levels., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

We consider the phase diagram of a ferromagnetic system driven to a quantum phase transition with a tuning parameter $p$. Before being suppressed, the transition becomes of the first order at a tricritical point, from which wings emerge under application of the magnetic field $H$ in the $T$-$p$-$H$ phase diagram. We show that the edge of the wings merge with tangent slopes at the tricritical point.

Systematic measurements of temperature dependent magnetization, resistivity and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) at ambient pressure as well as resistivity under pressures up to 5.25 GPa were conducted on single crystals of CrAuTe$_4$. Magnetization data suggest that magnetic moments are aligned antiferromagnetically along the crystallographic $c$-axis below $T_\textrm{N}$ = 255 K. ARPES measurements show band reconstruction due to the magnetic ordering. Magnetoresistance data show clear anisotropy, and, at high fields, quantum oscillations. The Neel temperature decreases monotonically under pressure, decreasing to $T_\textrm{N}$ = 236 K at 5.22 GPa. The pressure dependencies of (i) $T_\textrm{N}$, (ii) the residual resistivity ratio, and (iii) the size and power-law behavior of the low temperature magnetoresistance all show anomalies near 2 GPa suggesting that there may be a phase transition (structural, magnetic, and/or electronic) induced by pressure. For pressures higher than 2 GPa a significantly different quantum oscillation frequency emerges, consistent with a pressure induced change in the electronic states.

The temperature-pressure phase diagram of the ferromagnet LaCrGe$_3$ is determined for the first time from a combination of magnetization, muon-spin-rotation and electrical resistivity measurements. The ferromagnetic phase is suppressed near $2.1$~GPa, but quantum criticality is avoided by the appearance of a magnetic phase, likely modulated, AFM$_Q$. Our density functional theory total energy calculations suggest a near degeneracy of antiferromagnetic states with small magnetic wave vectors $Q$ allowing for the potential of an ordering wave vector evolving from $Q=0$ to finite $Q$, as expected from the most recent theories on ferromagnetic quantum criticality. Our findings show that LaCrGe$_3$ is a very simple example to study this scenario of avoided ferromagnetic quantum criticality and will inspire further study on this material and other itinerant ferromagnets.

We investigate the effect of isotope substitution on the electron-phonon interaction in the multi-band superconductor MgB2 using tunable laser based Angle Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy. The kink structure around 70 meV in the $\sigma$ band, which is caused by electron coupling to the E2g phonon mode, is shifted to higher binding energy by ~3.5 meV in Mg(10)B2 and the shift is not affected by superconducting transition. These results serve as the benchmark for investigations of isotope effects in known, unconventional superconductors and newly discovered superconductors where the origin of pairing is unknown., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

The synthesis and crystallographic, thermodynamic and transport properties of single crystalline Rh$_{9}$In$_4$S$_4$ were studied. The resistivity, magnetization and specific heat measurements all clearly indicate bulk superconductivity with a critical temperature, $T_{c}\sim$ 2.25 K. The Sommerfeld coefficient $\gamma$ and the Debye temperature($\varTheta_{\textrm{D}}$) were found to be 34 mJ mol$^{-1}$ K$^{-2}$ and 217 K respectively. The observed specific heat jump, $\Delta C/\gamma T_{c}$ = 1.66, is larger than the expected BCS weak coupling value of 1.43. Ginzburg-Landau (GL) ratio of the low temperature GL-penetration depth, $\lambda_\text{GL}$$\approx$ 5750\AA, to the GL-coherence length, $\xi_\text{GL}$$\approx$ 94\AA, is large: $\kappa$ $\sim$ 60. Furthermore, we observed a peak effect in the resistivity measurement as a function of both temperature and magnetic field.

The pressure dependence of the upper critical field, $H_\textrm{c2,c}$, of single crystalline FeSe was studied using measurements of the inter-plane resistivity, $\rho_{\textrm{c}}$ in magnetic fields parallel to tetragonal $c$-axis. $H_\textrm{c2,c}(T)$ curves obtained under hydrostatic pressures up to $1.56$ GPa, the range over which the superconducting transition temperature, $T_\textrm{c}$, of FeSe exhibits a non-monotonic dependence with local maximum at $p_1\approx$ 0.8 GPa and local minimum at $p_2\approx$ 1.2 GPa. The slope of the upper critical field at $T_\textrm{c}$, $\left(\textrm{d}H_\text{c2,c}/\textrm{d}T\right)_{T_\textrm{c}}$, also exhibits a non-monotonic pressure dependence with distinct changes at $p_1$ and $p_2$. For $pp_2$ the slope is in good quantitative agreement with a single band, orbital Helfand-Werthamer theory with Fermi velocities determined from Shubnikov-de Haas measurements. This finding indicates that Fermi surface changes are responsible for the local minimum of $T_\textrm{c}(p)$ at $p_2\approx$ 1.2 GPa., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We study magnetic domains in Nd2Fe14B single crystals using high resolution magnetic force mi- croscopy (MFM). Previous MFM studies and small angle neutron scattering experiments suggested the presence of nano-scale domains in addition to optically detected micrometer-scale ones. We find, in addition to the elongated, wavy nano-domains reported by a previous MFM study, that the micrometer size, star shape fractal pattern is constructed of an elongated network of nano-domains ~20 nm in width, with resolution-limited domain walls thinner than 2 nm. While the microscopic domains exhibit significant resilience to an external magnetic field, some of the nano-domains are sensitive to the magnetic field of the MFM tip., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures
