1. TERMS OF INCLUSION: NOTES ON THARU INDIGENOUS ACTIVISM AFTER 2015.

Abstract

This article explores the state of contemporary Tharu indigenous activism in western Tarai. It reviews the historical evolution ofTharu activism since the mid-twentieth century and up to the Tikapur incident in 2015 and provides ethnographic analyses of contemporary activities aimed at reinvigorating Tharu cultural practices. The article discusses writings on Tikapur incident immediately after the event, and the ways in which the words, "identity" and "rights," were used in them. Terence Turner's anthropological understanding of universal human rights and the politics of indigenous people's struggles is discussed, in order to reexamine the relationship between claims ofcollective identity and human rights. The article presents ethnographic sketches from contemporary western Tarai, including those relating to everyday interactions between the Tharu and non-Tharu, and a public speech made by a Tharu activist advocating the official recognition of a Tham system of local self- governance called badghar pratha. Following Turner 's argument, the article seeks to understand these contemporary Tharu activities as attempts to exercise their human capacity for the production of cultural difference-a "universal right to difference"-and argues that social inclusion should be understood as a process in which heterogeneous elements are included in a wider society while retaining their heterogeneity and differences. Abstract

This book engages with the concept, true value, and function of democracy in South Asia against the background of real social conditions for the promotion of peaceful development in the region.In the book, the issue of peaceful social development is defined as the conditions under which the maintenance of social order and social development is achieved – not by violent compulsion but through the negotiation of intentions or interests among members of society. The book assesses the issue of peaceful social development and demonstrates that the maintenance of such conditions for long periods is a necessary requirement for the political, economic, and cultural development of a society and state. Chapters argue that, through the post-colonial historical trajectory of South Asia, it has become commonly understood that democracy is the better, if not the best, political system and value for that purpose. Additionally, the book claims that, while democratization and the deepening of democracy have been broadly discussed in the region, the peace that democracy is supposed to promote has been in serious danger, especially in the 21st century.A timely survey and re-evaluation of democracy and peaceful development in South Asia, this book will be of interest to academics in the field of South Asian Studies, Peace and Conflict Studies and Asian Politics and Security.

Abstract

Tasty, convenient, and cheap, instant noodles are one of the most remarkable industrial foods ever. Consumed around the world by millions, they appeal to young and old, affluent and impoverished alike. The authors examine the history, manufacturing, marketing, and consumption of instant noodles. By focusing on three specific markets, they reveal various ways in which these noodles enable diverse populations to manage their lives. The first market is in Japan, where instant noodles have facilitated a major transformation of post-war society, while undergoing a seemingly endless tweaking in flavors, toppings, and packaging in order to entice consumers. The second is in the United States, where instant noodles have become important to many groups including college students, their nostalgic parents, and prison inmates. The authors also take note of'heavy users,'a category of the chronically hard-pressed targeted by U.S. purveyors. The third is in Papua New Guinea, where instant noodles arrived only recently and are providing cheap food options to the urban poor, all the while transforming them into aspiring consumers. Finally, this study examines the global'Big Food'industry. As one of the food system's singular achievements, the phenomenon of instant noodles provides insight into the pros and cons of global capitalist provisioning.

Abstract

Focusing primarily, but not exclusively, on urban and periurban Papua New Guinea (PNG), we discuss the significance of instant ramen noodles to those now known as the “bottom of the pyramid” (BOP). Although instant noodles are remarkable in that they are eaten by virtually everyone in the world, albeit in different amounts and for different reasons, they are marketed in PNG specifically as a “popularly positioned product” (PPP) for the BOP. Cheap, convenient, tasty, filling, and shelf stable, they are a modern addition to Sidney Mintz's classic “proletarian hunger killers” of sugar, tea, and coffee. But, we argue, instant noodles have a distinctive contemporary role: they do more than sustain the poor; they transform them into the aspiring consumers of the BOP. As such, instant noodles can be viewed as an antifriction device, greasing the skids of capitalism as it extends its reach.

Abstract

Japan and the Nordic countries have emerged as major donors in Nepal over the past three decades. During this time, development co-operation, or foreign aid as it is more commonly known in Nepal, has consolidated its position as a major component of the Nepalese state’s finances and gained increasing political influence. On the surface, Nepal has become a highly aid-dependent country and its relationship with its donors appears asymmetrical. However, the partner relationships forged during this time have created spaces for different working modalities and the Nepalese have actually exercised a considerable degree of ‘ownership’ both in their basic political choices and in various aspects of aid management. This chapter suggests that this has been a long, and by no means unfinished, learning process on both sides. While the donors have gained insights into the complexities of Nepalese society and polity, the Nepalese have learned to cope with the different and continually changing approaches of different donors. Both sides have been seeking the limits of their influence. To understand this complex relationship the chapter takes a closer look at the histories of Japanese and Nordic aid relationships in Nepal.
