Abstract: Compositionally homogeneous Si0.52Ge0.48 bulk crystals were grown under a mild temperature gradient using a Si(seed)/Ge/Si(feed) sandwich structure for thermoelectric (TE) applications. The furnace temperature was kept constant for 300h for the growth of homogeneous Si1−x Ge x bulk crystal with various temperature gradients. The temperature gradient of 0.4°C/mm resulted in homogeneous Si0.52Ge0.48 bulk crystals of 22mm length with a Ge compositional fluctuation of about 0.0023/mm. The compositions of the grown crystals were determined by means of Electron Probe Micro‐Analysis (EPMA). Electrical resistivity and Seebeck coefficient of the prepared samples were measured using in-house built measurement system. It was found that the compositional fluctuation of Ge was decreased as the temperature gradient of the furnace decreased. The prepared Si0.52Ge0.48 sample showed high Seebeck coefficient compared to that of pure Si and Ge crystals. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The recovery time of the motor evoked potential (MEP) amplitude following a neuromuscular blockade (NMB) during surgery is useful for interpreting low-amplitude waveforms or selecting the baseline waveform. In this study, the MEP data of 195 orthopedic cases who received a bolus dose of rocuronium at the beginning of surgery, between June 2009 and January 2016 were used. A non-linear regression analysis was applied to MEP amplitude data of multiple patients. The time taken for 90% of the maximum-amplitude recovery was estimated from the identified time series model. The 90% amplitude recovery time was 88.6 min in the pharmacological model and 89.4 min in the logistic model. These results were included in the 95% confidence interval of the previous studies. Although MEP amplitude is relatively unstable because of anesthesia, the averaged time series model of MEP amplitude can be estimated by using a large number of data., (© 2020. Springer Nature B.V.)

Purpose: The predictive values of the C-reactive protein (CRP) and procalcitonin (PCT) levels for postoperative infectious complications were investigated in patients who underwent elective laparoscopic resection of colorectal cancer., Methods: A total of 154 consecutive patients who underwent elective laparoscopic resection for colorectal cancer (CRC) were prospectively studied. The CRP and PCT levels on the first postoperative day (POD1) and the fourth postoperative day (POD4) were measured. Any correlations between the CRP and PCT levels on POD1 and POD4 with the occurrence of infectious complications were examined., Results: Infectious complications occurred in 18 (11.7%) patients. CRP on POD1 and CRP and PCT on POD4 were significantly higher in patients who developed infectious complications than in those who did not. The areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves of CRP on POD1 and CRP and PCT on POD4 were 0.597, 0.763 and 0.768, respectively. The cut-off values of CRP and PCT levels on POD4 were 14.33 mg/dl and 0,264 ng/ml, respectively. Whereas the positive predictive value of an elevated CRP level was high, the negative predictive value of an elevated PCT was high., Conclusion: The CRP and PCT levels on POD4 are both considered to be useful for the early detection of infectious complications after laparoscopic resection of CRC.

Objective : Brain functional connectivity measures are often used to study interactions between brain regions in various neurological disorders such as epilepsy. In particular, functional connectivity measures derived from high resolution electrophysiological signal data have been used to characterize epileptic networks in epilepsy patients. However, existing signal data formats as well as computational methods are not suitable for complex multi-step methods used for processing and analyzing signal data across multiple seizure events. To address the significant data management challenges associated with signal data, we have developed a new workflow-based tool called NeuroIntegrative Connectivity (NIC) using the Cloudwave Signal Format (CSF) as a common data abstraction model. Method : The NIC compositional workflow-based tool consists of: (1) Signal data processing component for automated pre- processing and generation of CSF files with semantic annotation using epilepsy domain ontology; and (2) Functional network computation component for deriving functional connectivity metrics from signal data analysis across multiple recording channels. The NIC tool streamlines signal data management using a modular software implementation architecture that supports easy extension with new libraries of signal coupling measures and fast data retrieval using a binary search tree indexing structure called NIC-Index. Result and Conclusion : We evaluated the NIC tool by processing and analyzing signal data for 28 seizure events in two patients with refractory epilepsy. The result shows that certain brain regions have high local measure of connectivity, such as total degree, as compared to other regions during ictal events in both patients. In addition, global connectivity measures, which characterize transitivity and efficiency, increase in value during the initial period of the seizure followed by decrease towards the end of seizure. The NIC tool allows users to efficiently apply several network analysis metrics to study global and local changes in epileptic networks in patient cohort studies., (©2020 AMIA - All rights reserved.)

Background: Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is an autosomally dominant inherited disorder characterized by multiple pigmented skin spots (café-au-lait spots) and neurofibroma. NF1 is associated with a wide variety of benign or malignant tumors. We report a NF1 patient who received surgical treatment for rectal carcinoma and multifocal small intestinal gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs)., Case Presentation: A 70-year-old female patient with NF1 was referred to our hospital after a positive fecal occult blood test. Locally advanced rectal carcinoma was detected in the upper rectum using colonoscopy. A submucosal tumor 20 mm in diameter was detected in the duodenal bulb during the upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. The biopsy specimen from the duodenum was GIST with positive immunostaining of KIT and CD34 microscopically. Laparoscopic low anterior resection for rectal carcinoma and local excision of the duodenal GIST were performed successfully. During the operation, five white small nodules were found on the serosa of the jejunum. One nodule was excised for histological examination. The resected rectal tumor was a well-differentiated adenocarcinoma with multiple lymph nodes metastases according to the histology. The duodenal tumor was found to be low-risk GIST. Moreover, the nodule from the jejunum was very low risk GIST. An excised skin wart was neurofibroma according to the histology., Conclusions: GIST or carcinomas have been reported to occasionally occur in the digestive tract of the patients with NF1. We present a rare case of a NF1 patient with GISTs and colorectal carcinoma.

We review the techniques and outcomes of the intragastric resection for gastric submucosal tumors (GSTs) using laparoscope and oral endoscope. In the literature, the mean operation time, intraoperative blood loss, pathological size of the tumor and postoperative hospital stay were 134 min, minimal, 31 mm and 6.4 d, respectively. There were no particular perioperative complications during the follow-up period (mean: 121.3 mo). Intragastric surgery using laparoscopy and oral endoscopy can be considerably beneficial for patients with GSTs locating in the upper third of the stomach between 2-5 cm in diameter and < 8 cm(2) in cross-sectional area and located in the upper third of the stomach.

The kinetics and mechanism of the thermal dehydration of magnesium acetate tetrahydrate were investigated as a typical example of the glass formation process via the thermal decomposition of solids. Formation of an intermediate fluid phase was identified as the characteristic phenomenon responsible for the formation of anhydrous glass. Thermal dehydration from the surface fluid layer regulates the zero-order-like rate behavior of the mass-loss process with an apparent activation energy E(a) ≈ 70-80 kJ mol(-1). Because of variations in the mechanism of release of the water vapor with changes in the reaction temperature range, the mass-loss behavior is largely dependent on the particle size of the sample and heating conditions. The formation of hollow anhydrous glass is the novel finding of the present study. The mechanism of formation is discussed in terms of complementary interpretations of the morphological changes and kinetic behavior of the thermal dehydration. On further heating, the as-produced anhydrous glass exhibits a glass transition phenomenon at approximately 470 K with an E(a) ≈ 550-560 kJ mol(-1), and subsequently crystallizes via the three-dimensional growth of nuclei controlled by diffusion. The crystallization process is characterized by an E(a) ≈ 280 kJ mol(-1) and an enthalpy change ΔH = -13.3 kJ mol(-1), resulting in the formation of smaller, rounded particles of crystalline anhydrate.

A new series of 1,4-benzoxazepine derivatives was designed, synthesized, and evaluated for binding to 5-HT1A receptor and cerebral anti-ischemic effect. A lot of compounds exhibited nanomolar affinity for 5-HT1A receptor with good selectivity over both dopamine D2 and alpha1-adrenergic receptors. Among these compounds, 3-chloro-4-[4-[4-(2-pyridinyl)-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridin-1-yl]butyl]-1, 4-benzoxazepin-5(4H)-one (50: SUN N4057 (Piclozotan) as 2HCl salt) showed remarkable neuroprotective activity in a transient middle cerebral artery occlusion (t-MCAO) model.

A series of new piperidinyl- and 1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridinyl-pyrimidine derivatives were synthesized. Among these compounds, 4-methyl-2-(1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridin-4-yl)pyrimidine derivative 23 (SUN N5147) exhibited sub-nanomolar affinity for 5-HT1A receptor with 1000-fold selectivity over both dopamine D2 and alpha1-adrenergic receptors and remarkable neuroprotective activity in a transient middle cerebral artery occlusion (t-MCAO) model.

As an extension of our previous investigation, a series of 7-aminoalkylpyrrolo[2,3-c]azepine derivatives was synthesized and evaluated as alpha1-adrenergic- and serotonin 2 (5-HT2)-receptor antagonists, with the aim of finding a novel potent antihypertensive agent with both activities. Among the compounds obtained in this study, (E)-1-ethyl-7-[3-[4-(4-fluorophenyl)piperazin-1-yl]propyl]-4-hy droxyimino-1,4,5,6,7,8-hexahydropyrrolo[2,3-c]azepin-8-on e (16d) displayed potent alpha1-adrenoceptor blocking activity (pA2=7.83+/-0.20) and 5-HT2-receptor blocking activity (pA2=9.47+/-0.17) in isolated guinea pig arteries. At 3 mg/kg oral administration, compound 16d exhibited antihypertensive activity more potent than that of doxazosin in deoxycorticosterone acetate (DOCA)-salt hypertensive dogs. Furthermore, this compound reduced the rate of mouse acute pulmonary thromboembolytic death induced by collagen and serotonin at oral doses of 0.3 mg/kg or more, and its effect lasted for at least 6 h at 3 mg/kg.

A series of 1-aminoalkyl-pyrrolo[2,3-c]azepin-8-one derivatives was synthesized and evaluated as alpha 1 adrenergic and serotonin 2 (5-HT2) receptor antagonists, with the aim of finding a novel antihypertensive agent potently exhibiting both activities. Some compounds with a 4-[4-(4-fluorobenzoyl)piperidino]butyl group at the 1-position exhibited both activities, and varied significantly in terms of the substituents at the 4-position of the pyrroloazepine ring. Among the compounds obtained in this study, (E)-1-[4-[4-(4-fluorobenzoyl)piperidino]-butyl]-4-hydroxyimino-7- methyl-1,4,5,6,7,8-hexahydropyrrolo[2,3-c]azepin-8-one (15a, SUN9221) displayed potent alpha 1-adrenergic antagonistic activity (pA2 = 8.89 +/- 0.21) and 5-HT2 antagonistic activity (pA2 = 8.74 +/- 0.22) in isolated guinea pig arteries. This compound exhibited antihypertensive activity and a duration of action equivalent to orally administered prazosin or doxazosin, 3 mg/kg, in conscious spontaneously hypertensive rats, as well as potent antiplatelet aggregation activity.

Two new series of 2-arylmethyl-1,4-benzoquinones (2 and 3) were synthesized for evaluation of their pharmacological activities. These compounds showed significant inhibition of platelet aggregation and some of them possessed a protective against endothelial cell injury. Structure-activity relationship studies indicated that 2b, 2d and 3b are potent inhibitors of platelet aggregation induced by arachidonic acid (AA) with an IC50 in the range of 1-10 micrograms/ml. Among them, 3b showed a significant inhibitory activity against endothelial cell injury caused by hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) at 1 microM.

These compounds showed significant inhibition of platelet aggregation induced by arachidonic acid (AA) and some of them possessed a protective effect against endothelial cell injury caused by hydrogen peroxide.

Two new series of 1-(1,4-benzoquinon-2-yl)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalenes (3,4) were synthesized for evaluation of their pharmacological activities. These compounds showed significant anti-lipid peroxidation (ALP) activities with rat brain homogenate and some of them possessed a protective effect against hypobaric hypoxia in mice.

A new series of 4-(1,4-benzoquinon-2-yl)-4-phenylbutanamides (2) were synthesized for evaluation of their pharmacological activities. All these compounds synthesized showed significant antilipidperoxidation (ALP) activities with brain homogenate in rats and some of them possessed a protective effect against hypobaric hypoxia in mice. Especially, a thiomorpholine derivative (2l, SUN-4757) showed a wide efficacy spectrum to a variety of experimental screening assays designed for cerebral protective agents, and it had a high LD50 value.

A series of 4,4-diarylbutylamine and 4,4-diarylbutanamide derivatives has been synthesized and evaluated for their antilipidperoxidation (ALP) activity and acute toxicity (LD50). Some of them were found to have significant ALP activity.
