Oxygen is a unique molecule that possesses a spin quantum number S=1. In the condensed phases of oxygen, the delicate balance between the antiferromagnetic interaction and van der Waals force results in the various phases with different crystal structures. By applying ultrahigh magnetic fields, the antiferromagnetic coupling between O2 molecules breaks, and novel high-field phases can appear. We have investigated the physical properties of condensed oxygen under ultrahigh magnetic fields and have found that the stable crystal structure of solid oxygen changes around 100 T. Even in liquid oxygen, we observed a strong acoustic attenuation, which indicates the fluctuation of local molecular arrangements. These results demonstrate that magnetic fields can modulate the packing structure of oxygen through spin-lattice coupling. Our study implies the possibility of controlling oxygen-related (bio-)chemical processes by using an external magnetic field.

We report the observation of superconductivity with multiple magnetic ordering and Rashba-type spin-orbit coupling in a layered polar semimetal EuAuBi. Magnetic transition is observed at 4 K, followed by a superconducting transition at 2.2 K, which is sensitive to the crystal surface conditions. The upper critical field Hc2 of 9.8 T for the out-of-plane field is three times higher than that for the in-plane field, which can be associated with the two-dimensional structure or the surface state. On the basis of first-principles calculations, it is found that the characteristic Hc2 possibly reflects the anisotropic modification of the Fermi surface by the effective combination of Rashba-type spin splitting and Zeeman spin splitting enhanced by Eu moments., 12 pages, 5 figures

We discover superconductivity (SC) in LaAgSb$_2$ at ambient pressure and its close correlation with a charge density wave (CDW) under pressure. The superconducting transition temperature ($T_c$) exhibits a sharp peak at the CDW critical pressure of 3.2 GPa. We demonstrate that the carriers inhabiting the Sb-square net is crucial not only in the formation of CDW but also in SC for their relatively strong electron-phonon coupling (EPC). Furthermore, theoretical EPC strength in pristine LaAgSb$_2$ cannot explain the observed peak with $T_c\sim 1$ K, which indicates that an additional mechanism reinforces SC only around the CDW critical pressure.

Square-net-layered materials have attracted attention as an extended research platform of Dirac fermions and of exotic magneto-transport phenomena. In this study, we investigated the magneto-transport properties of LaAgSb$_2$, which has Sb-square-net layers and shows charge density wave (CDW) transitions at ambient pressure. The application of pressure suppresses the CDWs, and above a pressure of 3.2 GPa, a disordered phase with no CDWs is realized. By utilizing a mechanical rotator combined with a high-pressure cell, we observed the angular dependence of the Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillation up to 3.5 GPa and confirmed the notable two-dimensional nature of the Fermi surface. In the disordered phase, we also observed a remarkable field-angular-dependent magnetoresistance (MR), which exhibited a "butterfly-like" polar pattern. To understand these results, we theoretically calculated the Fermi surface and conductivity tensor at the disordered phase. We showed that the SdH frequency and Hall coefficient calculated based on the present Fermi surface model agree well with the experiment. The transport properties in the disordered phase are mostly dominated by the anisotropic Dirac band, which has the highest conductivity owing to linear energy dispersions. We also proposed that momentum-dependent relaxation time plays an important role in the large transverse MR and negative longitudinal MR in the disordered phase, which is experimentally supported by the considerable violation of Kohler's scaling rule. Although quantitatively complete reproduction was not achieved, the calculation showed that the elemental features of the butterfly MR could be reasonably explained as the geometrical effect of the Fermi surface., 12 pages, 9 figures

We have investigated the low-temperature magnetism of sodium superoxide (NaO2), in which spin, orbital, and lattice degrees of freedom are closely entangled. The magnetic susceptibility shows anomalies at T1 = 220 K and T2 = 190 K, which correspond well to the structural phase transition temperatures, and a sudden decrease below T3 = 34 K. At 4.2 K, the magnetization shows a clear stepwise anomaly around 30 T with a large hysteresis. In addition, the muon spin relaxation experiments indicate no magnetic phase transition down to T = 0.3 K. The inelastic neutron scattering spectrum exhibits magnetic excitation with a finite energy gap. These results confirm that the ground state of NaO2 is a spin-singlet state. To understand this ground state in NaO2, we performed Raman scattering experiments. All the Raman-active libration modes expected for the marcasite phase below T2 are observed. Furthermore, we find that several new peaks appear below T3. This directly evidences the low crystal symmetry, namely, the presence of the phase transition at T3.We conclude that the singlet ground state of NaO2 is due to the spin-Peierls instability.

Recent interest in topological nature in condensed matter physics has revealed the essential role of Berry curvature in anomalous Hall effect (AHE). However, since large Hall response originating from Berry curvature has been reported in quite limited materials, the detailed mechanism remains unclear at present. Here, we report the discovery of a large AHE triggered by a pressure-induced magnetic phase transition in elemental $\alpha$-Mn. The AHE is absent in the non-collinear antiferromagnetic phase at ambient pressure, whereas a large AHE is observed in the weak ferromagnetic phase under high pressure despite the small averaged moment of $\sim 0.02 \mu_B$/Mn. Our results indicate that the emergence of the AHE in $\alpha$-Mn is governed by the symmetry of the underlying magnetic structure, providing a direct evidence of a switch between a zero and non-zero contribution of the Berry curvature across the phase boundary. $\alpha$-Mn can be an elemental and tunable platform to reveal the role of Berry curvature in AHE.

Electrical resistivity and ac-susceptibility measurements under high pressure were carried out in high-quality single crystals of $\alpha$-Mn. The pressure-temperature phase diagram consists of an antiferromagnetic ordered phase (0, Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

We have measured the temperature dependence of resistivity in single-crystalline CeNiGe$_{3}$ under hydrostatic pressure in order to establish the characteristic pressure-temperature phase diagram. The transition temperature to AFM-I phase $T_{\rm N1}$ = 5.5 K at ambient pressure initially increases with increasing pressure and has a maximum at $\sim$ 3.0 GPa. Above 2.3 GPa, a clear zero-resistivity is observed (SC-I phase) and this superconducting (SC) state coexists with AFM-I phase. The SC-I phase suddenly disappears at 3.7 GPa simultaneously with the appearance of an additional kink anomaly corresponding to the phase transition to AFM-II phase. The AFM-II phase is continuously suppressed with further increasing pressure and disappears at $\sim$ 6.5 GPa. In the narrow range near the critical pressure, an SC phase reappears (SC-II phase). A large initial slope of upper critical field $\mu_0H_{\rm c2}$ and non-Fermi liquid behavior indicate that the SC-II phase is mediated by antiferromagnetic fluctuations. On the other hand, the robust coexistence of the SC-I phase and AFM-I phase is unusual on the contrary to superconductivity near a quantum critical point on most of heavy-fermion compounds., Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures

High magnetic field x-ray diffraction experiments of solid oxygen have been performed at 10 K using DC magnetic fields of up to 5 T as well as pulsed magnetic fields of up to 25 T. The $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ phase of oxygen exhibits no magnetostriction greater than $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}d/d={10}^{\ensuremath{-}4}$ at 5 T, where $d$ and $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}d$ denote a lattice plane spacing and its magnetic field variation, respectively. The $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}d/d$ at higher fields of up to 25 T is found to be smaller than $2\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}3}$. These results contradict the previously reported giant magnetostriction in the $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ phase where the volume magnetostriction $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}V/V$ reaches ${10}^{\ensuremath{-}2}$ at 7.5 T [K. Antiferromagnet Mn_{3}P with Neel temperature T_{N}=30 K is composed of Mn tetrahedrons and zigzag chains formed by three inequivalent Mn sites. Due to the nearly frustrated lattice with many short Mn-Mn bonds, competition of the exchange interactions is expected. We here investigate the magnetic structure and physical properties including pressure effect in single crystals of this material, and reveal a complex yet well-ordered helimagnetic structure. The itinerant character of this materials is strong, and the ordered state with small magnetic moments is easily suppressed under pressure, exhibiting a quantum critical point at ∼1.6 GPa. The remarkable mass renormalization, even in the ordered state, and an incoherent-coherent crossover in the low-temperature region, characterize an unusual electronic state in Mn_{3}P, which is most likely effected by the underlying frustration effect.

We comprehensively studied the magnetotransport properties of LaAgSb$_2$ under high pressure up to 4 GPa, which showed unique successive charge density wave (CDW) transitions at $T_{CDW1}\sim 210$ K and $T_{CDW2}\sim 190$ K at ambient pressure. With the application of pressure, both $T_{CDW1}$ and $T_{CDW2}$ were suppressed and disappeared at the critical pressures of $P_{CDW1}=3.0$--3.4 GPa and $P_{CDW2}=1.5$--1.9 GPa, respectively. At $P_{CDW1}$, the Hall conductivity showed a step-like increase, which is consistently understood by the emergence of two-dimensional hollow Fermi surface at $P_{CDW1}$. We also observed a significant negative magnetoresistance effect when the magnetic field and current were applied parallel to the $c$ axis. Shubnikov--de Haas (SdH) oscillation measurements under pressure directly showed the changes in the Fermi surface across the CDW phase boundaries. In $PP_{CDW1}$, we observed a single frequency of $\sim 48$ T with a cyclotron effective mass of 0.066 $m_0$, whose cross section in the reciprocal space corresponded to only 0.22\% of the first Brillouin zone. Besides, we observed another oscillation component with frequency of $\sim 9.2$ T, which is significantly enhanced in the limited pressure range of $P_{CDW2}, Comment: 15pages, 13 figures

The 5d pyrochlore oxide Cd2Re2O7 exhibits successive phase transitions from a cubic pyrochlore structure (phase I) to a tetragonal structure without inversion symmetry below Ts1 of ~200 K (phase II) and further to another noncentrosymmetric tetragonal structure below Ts2 of ~120 K (phase III). The two low-temperature phases may be characterized by odd-parity multipolar orders induced by the Fermi liquid instability of the spin-orbit-coupled metal. To control the tetragonal domains generated by the transitions and to obtain a single-domain crystal for the measurements of anisotropic properties, we prepared single crystals with the (0 0 1) surface and applied biaxial and uniaxial stresses along the plane. Polarizing optical microscopy observations revealed that inducing a small strain of approximately 0.05% could flip the twin domains ferroelastically in a reversible fashion at low temperatures, which evidences that the tetragonal deformation switches at Ts2 between c > a for phase II and c < a for phase III. Resistivity measurements using single-domain crystals under uniaxial stress showed that the anisotropy was maximum at around Ts2 and turned over across Ts2: resistivity along the c axis is larger (smaller) than that along the a axis by ~25% for phase II (III) at around Ts2. These large anisotropies probably originate from spin-dependent scattering in the spin-split Fermi surfaces of the cluster electric toroidal quadrupolar phases of Cd2Re2O7., 16 pages, 13 figures, J. We succeeded in growing single crystals of SrAl 4 and related compounds with the BaAl 4 -type tetragonal structure by the self-flux method, and measured the electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, Hall coefficient, thermoelectric power, and de Haas–van Alphen (dHvA) effect. A plausible characteristic feature of the charge density wave (CDW) was observed below T CDW = 243 K in SrAl 4 . We also studied an effect of pressure on the electronic state in SrAl 4 by measuring the electrical resistivity and thermoelectric power. T CDW is found to decrease with increasing pressure, with a rate of dT CDW / dP = −12.5 K/GPa. To clarify the Fermi surface nesting, we studied the Fermi surface in SrAl 4 , which is found to be different from the Fermi surfaces of the similar compounds SrGa 4 , BaGa 4 , and BaAl 4 without CDW. The Fermi surfaces in these compounds were determined from the dHvA experiments, together with the energy band calculations.

This study investigates the transport properties of a chiral elemental semiconductor tellurium (Te) under magnetic fields and pressure. Application of hydrostatic pressure reduces the resistivity of Te, while its temperature dependence remains semiconducting up to 4 GPa, contrary to recent theoretical and experimental studies. Application of higher pressure causes structural as well as semiconductor--metal transitions. The resulting metallic phase above 4 GPa exhibits superconductivity at 2 K along with a noticeable linear magnetoresistance effect. On the other hand, at ambient pressure, we identified metallic surface states on the as-cleaved (10$\bar{1}$0) surfaces of Te. The nature of these metallic surface states has been systematically studied by analyzing quantum oscillations observed in high magnetic fields. We clarify that a well-defined metallic surface state exists not only on chemically etched samples that were previously reported, but also on as-cleaved ones., 6 pages, 5 figures

We performed $^{185/187}$Re nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements under pressure to investigate the superconducting properties of noncentrosymmetric superconductor Cd$_{2}$Re$_{2}$O$_{7}$ under various crystal structures. The pressure dependence of superconducting transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$ determined through ac susceptibility measurements is consistent with the results of previous resistivity measurements [T. C. Kobayashi $et al$., J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 80, 023715 (2011).]. Below 2.2 GPa, in the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_{1}$, a clear coherence peak was observed just below $T_{\rm c}$, indicating conventional $s$-wave superconductivity. In contrast, the coherence peak disappears at 3.1 GPa, suggesting a change in superconducting symmetry to the $p$-wave dominant state against pressure., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

In this paper the low-temperature properties of two isostructural canonical heavy-fermion compounds are contrasted with regards to the interplay between antiferromagnetic (AF) quantum criticality and superconductivity. For CeCu$_2$Si$_2$, fully-gapped d-wave superconductivity forms in the vicinity of an itinerant three-dimensional heavy-fermion spin-density-wave (SDW) quantum critical point (QCP). Inelastic neutron scattering results highlight that both quantum critical SDW fluctuations as well as Mott-type fluctuations of local magnetic moments contribute to the formation of Cooper pairs in CeCu$_2$Si$_2$. In YbRh$_2$Si$_2$, superconductivity appears to be suppressed at $T\gtrsim~10$ mK by AF order ($T_N$ = 70 mK). Ultra-low temperature measurements reveal a hybrid order between nuclear and 4f-electronic spins, which is dominated by the Yb-derived nuclear spins, to develop at $T_A$ slightly above 2 mK. The hybrid order turns out to strongly compete with the primary 4f-electronic order and to push the material towards its QCP. Apparently, this paves the way for heavy-fermion superconductivity to form at $T_c$ = 2 mK. Like the pressure - induced QCP in CeRhIn$_5$, the magnetic field - induced one in YbRh$_2$Si$_2$ is of the local Kondo-destroying variety which corresponds to a Mott-type transition at zero temperature. Therefore, these materials form the link between the large family of about fifty low-$T$ unconventional heavy - fermion superconductors and other families of unconventional superconductors with higher $T_c$s, notably the doped Mott insulators of the cuprates, organic charge-transfer salts and some of the Fe-based superconductors. We here report magnetostriction measurements under pulsed megagauss fields using a high-speed 100 MHz strain monitoring system devised using fiber Bragg grating (FBG) technique with optical filter method. The optical filter method is a detection scheme of the strain of FBG, where the changing Bragg wavelength of the FBG reflection is converted to the intensity of reflected light to enable the 100 MHz measurement. In order to show the usefulness and reliability of the method, we report the measurements for solid oxygen, spin-controlled crystal, and volborthite, a deformed Kagom\'{e} quantum spin lattice, using static magnetic fields up to 7 T and non-destructive millisecond pulse magnets up to 50 T. Then, we show the application of the method for the magnetostriction measurements of CaV$_{4}$O$_{9}$, a two-dimensional antiferromagnet with spin-halves, and LaCoO$_{3}$, an anomalous spin-crossover oxide, in the megagauss fields., Comment: 9pages, 6 figures, Conference proceedings for MegaGauss16 at Kashiwa, Japan in Sept. 2018

We study the phenomenological implications of the modular symmetry $\Gamma(3) \simeq A_4$ of lepton flavors facing recent experimental data of neutrino oscillations. The mass matrices of neutrinos and charged leptons are essentially given by fixing the expectation value of modulus $\tau$, which is the only source of modular invariance breaking. We introduce no flavons in contrast with the conventional flavor models with $A_4$ symmetry. We classify our neutrino models along with the type I seesaw model, the Weinberg operator model and the Dirac neutrino model. In the normal hierarchy of neutrino masses, the seesaw model is available by taking account of recent experimental data of neutrino oscillations and the cosmological bound of sum of neutrino masses. The predicted $\sin^2\theta_{23}$ is restricted to be larger than $0.54$ and $\delta_{CP}=\pm (50^{\circ}\mbox{--}180^{\circ})$. Since the correlation of $\sin^2\theta_{23}$ and $\delta_{CP}$ is sharp, the prediction is testable in the future. It is remarkable that the effective mass $m_{ee}$ of the neutrinoless double beta decay is around $22$\,meV while the sum of neutrino masses is predicted to be $145$\,meV. On the other hand, for the inverted hierarchy of neutrino masses, only the Dirac neutrino model is consistent with the experimental data., Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures, 5 tables, major modifications

The magnetic-field-temperature phase diagram of solid oxygen is investigated by the adiabatic magnetocaloric effect (MCE) measurement with pulsed magnetic fields. Relatively large temperature decrease with hysteresis is observed at just below the $\ensuremath{\beta}\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ and $\ensuremath{\alpha}\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\beta}$ phase-transition temperatures owing to the field-induced transitions. The magnetic field dependence of these phase boundaries are obtained as ${T}_{\ensuremath{\beta}\ensuremath{\gamma}}(H)=43.8\ensuremath{-}1.55\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}3}{H}^{2}$ K and ${T}_{\ensuremath{\alpha}\ensuremath{\beta}}(H)=23.9\ensuremath{-}0.73\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}3}{H}^{2}$ K. The magnetic Clausius-Clapeyron equation quantitatively explains the $H$ dependence of ${T}_{\ensuremath{\beta}\ensuremath{\gamma}}$, but does not ${T}_{\ensuremath{\alpha}\ensuremath{\beta}}$. The MCE curve at ${T}_{\ensuremath{\beta}\ensuremath{\gamma}}$ is of typical first order, while the curve at ${T}_{\ensuremath{\alpha}\ensuremath{\beta}}$ seems to have both characteristics of first- and second-order transitions. We discuss the order of the $\ensuremath{\alpha}\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\beta}$ phase transition and propose possible reasons for the unusual behaviors.

The $5d$-transition-metal pyrochlore oxide $\mathrm{C}{\mathrm{d}}_{2}\mathrm{R}{\mathrm{e}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{7}$, which was recently suggested to be a prototype of the spin-orbit-coupled metal [Phys. Rev. Lett. 115, 026401 (2015)], exhibits an inversion-symmetry-breaking (ISB) transition at 200 K and a subsequent superconductivity below 1 K at ambient pressure. We study the crystal structure at high pressures up to 5 GPa by means of synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction. A rich structural phase diagram is obtained, which contains at least seven phases, and is almost consistent with the electronic phase diagram determined by previous resistivity measurements. Interestingly, the ISB transition vanishes at $\ensuremath{\sim}4\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\mathrm{GPa}$ where the enhancement of the upper critical field was observed in resistivity. Moreover, it is shown that the point groups at 8 K, probably kept in the superconducting phases, sequentially transform into piezoelectric, ferroelectric, and centrosymmetric structures on the application of pressure.

Comprehensive magnetic-field-temperature ($H$-$T$) phase diagram of solid oxygen including the $\theta$ phase is discussed in the context of the ultrahigh-field measurement and the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) measurement. The problems originating from the short duration of the pulse field, non-equilibrium condition and MCEs, are pointed out and dealt with. The obtained phase diagram manifests the entropy relation between the phases as $S_\theta \sim S_\alpha, Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

Dissipation inevitably occurs in first order phase transitions, leading to the irreversible heating. Conversely, the irreversible heating effect could be a clue for the first order phase transition. We measured the temperature change at the magnetic-field-induced alpha-theta phase transition of solid oxygen. The significant temperature increase from 13 to 37 K, amounting to 700 J/mol, is observed due to the irreversible heating at the first order phase transition. We argue that the hysteresis loss of the magnetization curve and the dissipative structural transformation account for the irreversible heating. The measurement of the irreversible heating can be utilized for detecting the first-order phase transition in good combination with the ultrahigh magnetic fields generated in microseconds., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Optical absorption spectra of solid oxygen α phase and liquid oxygen were measured in high magnetic fields over 100 T using a single turn coil method. The absorption originates from the bimolecular transition was observed. The spectra strongly reflect the local magnetic interaction between two oxygen molecules. The shape of the absorption spectrum of the α oxygen changed dramatically with increasing magnetic fields, even though the absorption intensity of liquid oxygen simply declined. This difference cannot be explained by only the local magnetic interaction, and we speculate that the field induced lattice distortion plays an important role in the solid oxygen α phase.

An overview of the crystal structures and physical properties of the recently discovered iron-platinum-arsenide superconductors, Ca10(PtnAs8)(Fe2-xPtxAs2)5 (n = 3 and 4), which have a superconducting transition temperature up to 38 K, is provided. The crystal structure consists of superconducting Fe2As2 layers alternating with platinum-arsenic layers, PtnAs8. The upper critical field Hc2, hydrostatic pressure dependence of superconducting transition temperature Tc, and normal-state magnetic susceptibility are reported., 7 pages, 6 figures

Adsorption isotherms of N 2 , O 2 , CO 2 , and Xe on a flexible microporous coordination polymer, CPL-2 [Cu 2 (pzdc) 2 (bpy)]·(pzdc = pyrazine-2,3-dicarboxylate; bpy = 4,4'-bipyridine), possessing bellows-shaped one-dimensional channels were measured. A nonintegral number of each of the N 2 , O 2 , CO 2 , and Xe molecules can be accommodated in each unit pore, which indicates that all guest molecules are accommodated in the so-called "incommensurate fashion". In situ synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction patterns of CPL-2 with guest molecules were recorded. The unit cells were determined from each pattern. It was found that the host CPL-2 exhibits different crystal transformation with the accommodation of each guest molecule. This indicates that, even in the case of incommensurate adsorption, the flexible framework of a microporous coordination polymer can transform each pore to suit different guest molecules.

The superconducting pyrochlore oxide Cd2Re2O7 is revisited with a particular emphasis on the sample-quality issue. The compound has drawn attention as the only superconductor (Tc = 1.0 K) that has been found in the family of {\alpha}-pyrochlore oxides since its discovery in 2001. Moreover, it exhibits two characteristic structural transitions from the cubic pyrochlore structure, with the inversion symmetry broken at the first one at 200 K. Recently, it has attracted increasing attention as a candidate spin-orbit coupled metal (SOCM), in which specific Fermi liquid instability is expected to lead to an odd-parity order with spontaneous inversion-symmetry breaking [L. Fu, Phys. Rev. Lett. 115, 026401 (2015)] and parity-mixing superconductivity [V. Kozii and L. Fu: Phys. Rev. Lett. 115 (2015) 207002; Y. Wang et al., Phys. Rev. B 93 (2016) 134512]. The effects of pressure on antiferromagnetic (AFM) and superconducting phase transitions of 112-type Ca$_{1-x}$La$_{x}$FeAs$_{2}$ were studied, and the in-plane electrical resistivity $\rho_{ab}$ was measured with an indenter-type pressure cell. The AFM phase transition temperatures of $T_{\rm N}$ = 47, 63, and 63 K at ambient pressure for $x$ = 0.18, 0.21, and 0.26 was suppressed by applying pressure $P$, with superconductivity emerging at critical pressures of $P_{\rm c}$ $\simeq$ 0, 1.5, and 3.4 GPa, respectively. Correspondingly, the slope of $T_{\rm N}$ against $P$ decreased as $dT_{\rm N}/P$ $\simeq$ $-$15 and $-$2 K/GPa for $x$ = 0.21 and 0.26, respectively. We report pressure-induced superconductivity in antiferromagnetic cerium compounds and a ferromagnetic uranium compound, focusing on the relation between the superconducting state and the Fermi surface instability in CeRhIn5 and the huge upper critical eld Hc2 in CeIrSi3 without inversion symmetry in the crystal structure. The pairing interaction is well correlated with ferromagnetism, as well as antiferromagnetism or antiferromagnetic uctuations. In the recently discovered superconductor NpPd5Al2, superconductivity is found to be located in the vicinity of an antiferromagnetically ordered state. The upper critical eld Hc2 is strongly supressed by the large paramagneic e ect, and the corresponding magnetization curve indicates a step-like increase at Hc2, producing a rst-order phase transition.

We have succeeded in observing the de Haas–van Alphen effect in PrOs 4 P 12 which shows no anomaly down to 50 mK in contrast to PrFe 4 P 12 and PrRu 4 P 12 . The Fermi surface (FS) topology is reasonably explained by the energy band structure calculation based on a full potential linearized augmented-plane-wave method within the local-density-approximation. Whereas the localized nature of 4 f -electrons, we have confirmed a highly enhanced cyclotron effective mass up to 18 m 0 in PrOs 4 P 12 , which is enhanced 3.8 times compared to that of LaOs 4 P 12 . No nesting property with q =(1,0,0) in the FS of PrOs 4 P 12 has been confirmed, which suggests both the 4 f -electron's contribution and the FS nesting property play the role for the phase transitions in PrFe 4 P 12 and PrRu 4 P 12 .

We studied the change of the Fermi surface properties in antiferromagnets CeIn 3 and CeRhIn 5 via the dHvA experiments under pressure. We found the abrupt change of the Fermi surface at the critical pressure P c , where the magnetic ordering state changes to the paramagnetic one. The change of the Fermi surface indicates that the 4f-electron character is changed from localized to itinerant in CeIn 3 and CeRhIn 5 at P c . Namely, the 4f-electron contributes to the volume of the Fermi surface above P c . Interestingly, the pressure-induced heavy fermion state with large effective mass was observed around P c , where the pressure-induced superconductivity appears. We also discuss the Fermi surface properties in the system without inversion symmetry in the crystal structure as in CePt 3 Si and CeTX 3 (T:Co, Ir, Rh, X:Si, Ge). The spin–orbit interaction due to the lack of inversion symmetry brings about a splitting of the Fermi surface, which is important for considering the formation of Cooper pair.

The phase diagram of solid oxygen in the magnetic-field-temperature ($B\ensuremath{-}T$) plane is revealed by magnetization and magnetotransmission measurements. The high-field phase of solid oxygen, which we term the $\ensuremath{\theta}$ phase, is induced at the temperature below 42 K. The transition fields at the $\ensuremath{\alpha}\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\theta}$ and $\ensuremath{\beta}\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\theta}$ transitions are almost temperature independent, with the phase boundary being very steep. This phase boundary indicates that the entropy change is very small at the $\ensuremath{\alpha}\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\theta}$ and $\ensuremath{\beta}\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\theta}$ transitions, in contrast to the entropy-driven $\ensuremath{\beta}\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ transition at zero field. We argue that the $\ensuremath{\theta}$ phase differs from the high-temperature $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ phase in terms of entropy; the molecular rotation is inhibited in the $\ensuremath{\theta}$ phase, whereas permitted in the $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ phase. This finding consolidates the novelty of the $\ensuremath{\theta}$ phase.

The mineral tetrahedrite Cu$_{12}$Sb$_{4}$S$_{13}$ exhibits a first-order metal--insulator transition (MIT) at $T_{\rm MI}$ = 85 K and ambient pressure. We measured the $^{63}$Cu-NMR at ambient pressure and the resistivity and magnetic susceptibility at high pressures. $^{63}$Cu-NMR results indicate a nonmagnetic insulating ground state in this compound. The MIT is monotonically suppressed by pressure and disappears at $\sim1.0$ GPa. Two other anomalies are observed in the resistivity measurements, and the pressure -- temperature phase diagram of Cu$_{12}$Sb$_{4}$S$_{13}$ is constructed., Comment: 5 pages, 7 figures

AC susceptibility measurements in mechanically alloyed (MA) Ni–20 at% Mn were made under hydrostatic pressures up to 7.5 GPa. The results were compared with a bulk alloy made by the conventional method of melting. The Curie temperature decreased with pressure at the rate of −6.9 and −8.0 K/GPa in MA and the bulk alloy, respectively. The transition temperature to the reentrant spin glass state increased at the rate of 1.2 and 1.7 K/GPa in MA and the bulk alloy, respectively. The results were explained by assuming a Gaussian distribution of concentration fluctuation.

High-pressure AC-susceptibility measurement has been carried out in UIr. Three series of peaks corresponding to the successive ferromagnetic transitions indicate the existence of three ferromagnetic phases FM1-3. The phase boundary between FM2 and FM3 was not realized in the resistivity measurement. The Meissner effect is observed successfully in the pressure range of 2.63–2.74 GPa where the peak of AC-susceptibility survives. This result indicates that the superconducting phase is embedded in the FM3 phase with the ordered moment less than 0.05 μ B /U and adjoins the quantum critical point.

We measured the pressure dependence of in-plane resistivity ${\ensuremath{\rho}}_{ab}$ in the recently discovered iron-based superconductor ${\mathrm{Ca}}_{10}({\mathrm{Ir}}_{4}{\mathrm{As}}_{8}){({\mathrm{Fe}}_{2\ensuremath{-}x}{\mathrm{Ir}}_{x}{\mathrm{As}}_{2})}_{5}$, which shows a unique structural phase transition in the absence of magnetic ordering, with a superconducting transition temperature ${T}_{\mathrm{c}}=16$ K and a structural phase transition temperature ${T}_{\mathrm{s}}\ensuremath{\simeq}100$ K at ambient pressure. ${T}_{\mathrm{c}}$ and ${T}_{\mathrm{s}}$ are suppressed on applying pressure and disappear at approximately 0.5 GPa, suggesting a relationship between superconductivity and structure. ${\mathrm{Ca}}_{10}({\mathrm{Ir}}_{4}{\mathrm{As}}_{8}){({\mathrm{Fe}}_{2\ensuremath{-}x}{\mathrm{Ir}}_{x}{\mathrm{As}}_{2})}_{5}$ is a rather rare example in which the superconductivity appears only in a low-temperature ordered phase. The fact that the change in the crystal structure is directly linked with superconductivity suggests that the crystal structure as well as magnetism are important factors governing superconductivity in iron pnictides.

We have studied a change of the Fermi surface in an antiferromagnet CeIn 3 via the de Haas–van Alphen experiment under pressure up to 3 GPa. With increasing pressure P , the Neel temperature T N =10 K decreases and becomes zero at a critical pressure P c ≃2.6 GPa. In the pressure region P > P c , we have observed a large main Fermi surface named a , which indicates that the electronic state of 4 f electron in CeIn 3 changes from localized to itinerant at P c , as observed in the similar antiferromagnets CeRh 2 Si 2 and CeRhIn 5 . The cyclotron effective mass m c * of this main Fermi surface is extremely enhanced around P c : m c * ≃60 m 0 at 2.7 GPa for the magnetic field along the direction.

We report nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurement at ambient pressure and resistivity measurement under high pressure in the new heavy fermion (HF) compound SmOs 4 Sb 12 . The NQR spectrum and the nuclear spin–lattice relaxation rate (1/ T 1 ) clearly demonstrate the bulk nature of ferromagnetic ordering below T C ∼2 K. The temperature dependence of 1/ T 1 exhibits the characteristic behaviors of a Kondo lattice. The application of pressure decreases Kondo temperature and stabilizes the magnetic ordering, which is the same tendency as that found in some Yb-based compounds. The obtained phase diagram indicates SmOs 4 Sb 12 to be in the vicinity of its ferromagnetic critical point.

We have succeeded in growing a high-quality single crystal of an antiferromagnet UPdGa 5 by the Ga-flux method with the off-stoichiometric composition of U : Pd : Ga = 1 : 2 : 7.3. The Neel temperature T N = 30.5 K is found to increase with increasing the residual resistivity ratio (RRR) and becomes constant for a high-quality single crystal sample whose RRR is larger than 50. The electronic state has been investigated by the de Haas–van Alphen experiment, indicating the similar cylindrical Fermi surfaces as in an antiferromagnet UPtGa 5 . We have also studied the pressure effect by measuring the electrical resistivity. The Neel temperature decreases with increasing pressure and becomes zero at 3.1 GPa. The antiferromagnetic state is changed into the paramagnetic state above 3.1 GPa.

The magnetic properties of O2 adsorbed in nanochannels of porous metal-organic solids CPL-1 and CPL-p1 have been investigated by means of high-field magnetization process measurement. The contribution from adsorbed O2 shows the metamagnetic-like behavior in both compounds. We propose “the field-induced rearrangement mechanism” as the explanation for the metamagnetic-like behavior. It is known for the O2-O2 dimer that the magnetic interaction depends strongly on the intermolecular distance and the orientation of molecular axes. It is considered naturally that the stable arrangement with saturated magnetic moment in the sufficient high field is different from the H-structure which is stable at zero field.

Molecules and atoms confined in a nanospace may have properties distinctly different from those of the bulk fluid, owing to the formation of a specific molecular array characteristic of nanospace. In situ synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction measurements have been used to observe confined guest molecules such as N2, O2, Ar, and CH4 in the well-regulated ultramicropore of a copper coordination polymer, 1 ([Cu2(pzdc)2pyz]: pzdc = 2,3-pyrazinedicarboxylate and pyz = pyrazine). The obtained crystal structures indicate that guest molecules are confined in a linear fashion to form crystalline-like regular ordered arrays, in contrast to the situation in the gas and liquid state, even at temperatures above the boiling point, and the ordered arrays are characteristic of the kind of gas molecule and the geometrical and potential properties of the ultramicropore of 1.

We report similarities and differences of the transport features in the spin density wave (SDW) and in the field-induced SDW (FISDW) phases of the quasi-one-dimensional compound (TMTSF)2PF6. As temperature decreases below ≈2 K, the resistance in both phases exhibits a maximum and a subsequent strong drop. However, the characteristic temperature of the R(T) maximum and its scaling behavior in different magnetic fields B are evidence that the nonmonotonic R(T) dependences have different origin in SDW and FISDW regions of the phase diagram. We also found that the borderline T0(B, P) which divides the FISDW region of the P-B-T phase diagram into the hysteresis and nonhysteresis domains terminates in the N=1 subphase; the borderline thus has no extension to the SDW N=0 phase.
