Coupling between dynamical heterogeneity of ionic liquids and their structural periodicity on different length-scales can be directly probed by quasielastic neutron scattering with polarization analysis. The technique provides the tools to investigate single-particle and cooperative ion motions separately and, thus, dynamics of ion associations affecting the net charge transport can be experimentally explored. The focus of this study is the structure-dynamic relationship in the protic ionic liquid, triethylammonium triflate, characterized by strong hydrogen bonds between cations and anions. The site-selective deuterium/hydrogen-isotope substitution was applied to modulate the relative contributions of different atom groups to the total coherent and incoherent scattering signal. This approach in combination with molecular dynamics simulations allowed us to obtain a sophisticated description of cation self-diffusion and confined ion pair dynamics from the incoherent spectral component by using the acidic proton as a tagged particle. The coherent contribution of the neutron spectra demonstrated substantial ion association leading to collective ion migration that preserves charge alteration on picosecond time scale, as well as correlation of the localized dynamics occurring between adjacent ions.

Design of new functional materials with fast Mg-ion mobility is crucial for the development of competitive solid-state magnesium batteries. Herein, we present new nanocomposites, Mg(BH4)2·1.6NH3-Al2O3, reaching a high magnesium conductivity of σ(Mg2+) = 2.5 × 10-5 S cm-1 at 22 °C assigned to favorable interfaces between amorphous state Mg(BH4)2·1.6NH3; inert and insulating Al2O3 nanoparticles; and a minor fraction of crystalline material, mainly Mg(BH4)2·2NH3. Furthermore, quasi-elastic neutron scattering reveals that the Mg2+-ion mobility in the solid state appears to be correlated to relatively slow motion of NH3 molecules rather than the fast dynamics of BH4- complexes. The nanocomposite is compatible with a metallic Mg anode and shows stable Mg2+ stripping/plating in a symmetric cell and an electrochemical stability of ∼1.2 V. The nanocomposite has high mechanical stability and ductility and is a promising Mg2+ electrolyte for future solid-state magnesium batteries.

Rare earth borohydrides RE (BH4)3 are studied in the context of energy storage, luminescence and magnetic applications. We have investigated the structural behavior of praseodymium borohydride Pr (11BH4)3 containing 11B isotope because of the previously reported negative thermal expansion. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), in-situ variable temperature synchrotron radiation powder X-ray diffraction (SR-PXD) and infrared studies reveal that Pr (11BH4)3 undergoes to a volume contraction during the phase transition from alpha α-Pr (11BH4)3 to rhombohedral r-Pr (11BH4)3 phase upon heating to 493 K. Surprisingly, the phase transition persists upon cooling at room temperature. Vibrational analysis also shows that the stretching frequency of BH4− anion does not change upon heating which indicates that the B–H bond length remains constant during the structural phase transition from α-Pr (11BH4)3 to r-Pr (11BH4)3 phase. Additionally, the energy barrier of reorientation motion of the BH4− anion in the α-phase was estimated to be ca 23 kJ/mol by quasi-elastic neutron scattering (QENS) and Raman spectroscopy.

Inherently chiral, barrel-shaped, macrocyclic hosts such as cyclohexanohemicucurbit[n]urils (cycHC[n]) bind zinc porphyrins and trifluoroacetic acid externally in halogenated solvents. In the current study, we tested a set of eighteen organic guests with various functional groups and polarity, namely, thiophenols, phenols, and carboxylic and sulfonic acids, to identify a preference toward hydrogen bond–donating molecules for homologous cycHC[6] and cycHC[8]. Guests were characterized by Hirshfeld partial charges on acidic hydrogens and their binding by 1H and 19F NMR titrations. Evaluation of association constants revealed the complexity of the system and indirectly proved an external binding with stoichiometry over 2:1 for both homologs. It was found that overall binding strength is influenced by the stoichiometry of the formed complexes, the partial atomic charge on the hydrogen atom of the hydrogen bond donor, and the bulkiness of the guest. Additionally, a study on the formation of complexes with halogen anions (Cl− and Br−) in methanol and chloroform, analyzed by 1H NMR, did not confirm complexation. The current study widens the scope of potential applications for host molecules by demonstrating the formation of hydrogen-bonded complexes with multisite hydrogen bond acceptors such as cycHC[6] and cycHC[8].

Chiral cyclohexanohemicucurbit[n]urils (n = 6, 8) (cycHCs) are able to bind guests through multiple "outer surface interactions", which in the case of planar zinc porphyrins leads to induction of chirality. Crystal structures of complexes of complementary sized hosts revealed social self-sorting, while in the solution phase one cycHC can accommodate up to three porphyrin molecules with log Ktotal 9.

Environmental pollution with chiral organic compounds is an emerging problem requiring innovative sensing methods. Amino-functionalized thioureas, such as 2-(dimethylamino)cyclohexyl-(3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)thiourea (Takemoto’s catalyst), are widely used organocatalysts with virtually unknown environmental safety data. Ecotoxicity studies based on the Vibrio fischeri luminescence inhibition test reveal significant toxicity of Takemoto’s catalyst (EC50 = 7.9 mg/L) and its NH2-substituted analog (EC50 = 7.2–7.4 mg/L). The observed toxic effect was pronounced by the influence of the trifluoromethyl moiety. En route to the porphyrin-based chemosensing of Takemoto-type thioureas, their supramolecular binding to a series of zinc porphyrins was studied with UV-Vis and circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy, computational analysis and single crystal X-ray diffraction. The association constant values generally increased with the increasing electron-withdrawing properties of the porphyrins and electron-donating ability of the thioureas, a result of the predominant Zn⋯N cation–dipole (Lewis acid–base) interaction. The binding event induced a CD signal in the Soret band region of the porphyrin hosts—a crucial property for chirality sensing of Takemoto-type thioureas.

The conduction mechanism of Na2(B12H12)0.5(B10H10)0.5, a particularly promising solid-state electrolyte for sodium-ion batteries, is elucidated. We find from electrochemical impedance spectroscopy that the temperature-dependent conductivity is characterized by three distinct regimes of conductivity. In the first regime, at temperatures below −50 °C, conductivity remains low before a glasslike transition identified by X-ray diffraction and calorimetry causes a faster increase of sodium conductivity through site disordering. The second regime of faster diffusion above −50 °C is characterized by an apparent activation energy of 0.6 eV, higher than expected from the local microscopic barrier of 0.35 eV observed by, e.g., 23Na nuclear magnetic resonance spin-lattice relaxation. This mechanism of so-called correlated ion diffusion originates from the coupling of the cation and anion motion due to short-range ion–ion interactions combined with background energy fluctuations, which we can associate through quasi-elastic neutron scattering experiment to fast librations of the anions. In the third regime, at temperatures above 70 °C, the thermal energy increases above the background energy fluctuations and the activation energy decreases to 0.34 eV, reflecting the local energy barrier for noncorrelated ion diffusion. We discuss the link between this behavior and the different frustrations responsible for the high conductivity of closo-borate electrolytes and show that our interpretation can also explain the complex conductivity behavior observed in related compounds.

Systematic molecular dynamics simulations based on an empirical force field have been carried out for samples of triethylammonium trifluoromethanesulfonate (triethylammonium triflate, [TEA][Tf]), covering a wide temperature range 200 K ≤ T ≤ 400 K and analyzing a broad set of properties, from self-diffusion and electrical conductivity to rotational relaxation and hydrogen-bond dynamics. The study is motivated by recent quasi-elastic neutron scattering and differential scanning calorimetry measurements on the same system, revealing two successive first order transitions at T ≈ 230 and 310 K (on heating), as well as an intriguing and partly unexplained variety of subdiffusive motions of the acidic proton. Simulations show a weakly discontinuous transition at T = 310 K and highlight an anomaly at T = 260 K in the rotational relaxation of ions that we identify with the simulation analogue of the experimental transition at T = 230 K. Thus, simulations help identifying the nature of the experimental transitions, confirming that the highest temperature one corresponds to melting, while the one taking place at lower T is a transition from the crystal, stable at T ≤ 260 K, to a plastic phase (260 ≤ T ≤ 310 K), in which molecules are able to rotate without diffusing. Rotations, in particular, account for the subdiffusive motion seen at intermediate T both in the experiments and in the simulation. The structure, distribution, and strength of hydrogen bonds are investigated by molecular dynamics and by density functional computations. Clustering of ions of the same sign and the effect of contamination by water at 1% wgt concentration are discussed as well.

Quasielastic neutron scattering (QENS) in combination with deuterium labeling allows for studying protonated "highlighted" species and extracting detailed information about tangled stochastic processes. This approach has been applied to examine proton dynamics in the protic ionic liquid, triethylammonium triflate. The temperature range covered during the experiments (2-440 K) included two melting transitions correspondingly reflected in the global and localized dynamics of the cation. To focus on the dynamics of the acidic proton, QENS spectra of the sample with the deuterated alkyl side chains were analyzed. The remaining hydrogen atom served as a tagged particle for investigating both global long-range motion of the cation and specific dynamics of the proton and, thus, provided insight into the transport properties of triethylammonium triflate, which is important for designing electrochemical devices.

Quasielastic neutron scattering with polarized neutrons allows for an experimental separation of single-particle and collective processes, as contained in the incoherent and coherent scattering contributions. This technique was used to investigate the dynamical processes in the pyridinium-based ionic liquid 1-butylpyridinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)-imide. We observed two diffusion processes with different time scales. The slower diffusional process was present in both the coherent and the incoherent contribution, meaning that this process has at least a partial collective nature. The second faster localized process is only present in the incoherent scattering contribution. We conclude that it is a true single-particle process on a shorter time scale.

Lithium amideborohydrides Li[BH4](1x)[NH2](x) possess liquid-like Li superionic conductivity at nearly ambient temperature. The fast Li+ diffusion facilitated by the localized motions of the anions is proposed to occur through a network of vacant tetrahedral sites, acting as conduction channels. To study the reorientational dynamics of the anions, we have performed quasielastic neutron scattering experiments on samples with different compositions (x = 2/3, 0.722, 0.737, 3/4) over a broad temperature and time range. To unambiguously disentangle the contributions of the two species, [BH4](-) and [NH2](-), we took advantage of deuterium labeling and could clearly demonstrate that the quasielastic broadening is mainly determined by the [BH4](-) reorientations. With the help of a newly developed model, supported by ab initio molecular dynamics calculations, we have identified three relaxation components, which account for generally anisotropic C-3-rotations of the [BH4](-) tetrahedra including jumps by a small angle from the equilibrium position.

Neutron scattering is an excellent tool to study the dynamics of hydrogen-rich materials. In the present work we subsume our results on pyridinium-based ionic liquids. We have performed inelastic, quasielastic and elastic. Neutron scattering is an excellent tool to study the dynamics of hydrogen-rich materials. In the present work we subsume our work on pyridinium-based ionic liquids. We have performed inelastic, quasielastic and elastic neutron scattering experiments aiming to understand the different dynamical processes that occur at different temperatures in ionic liquids. Using quasielastic scattering we obtained data that can be described as a superposition of localized dynamical processes and long range diffusion. The localized processes, which originate from the alkyl chain and the pyridinium ring of the cation, have been modelled in terms of the so-called Gaussian model. The influence of the length of the alkyl chain, attached to the cation, on the dynamical processes is discussed in detail. Furthermore we show neutron backscattering data, obtained on partially deuterated samples, that clearly demonstrate the melting of the alkyl chain and the activation of methyl end-group rotations at low temperatures. Finally, the power of deuterium labelling is evidenced for inelastic neutron scattering data.

Changing the number of carbon atoms in the substituents of ionic liquids (ILs) is a way to shift the balance between Coulomb and van der Waals forces and, thus, to tune physicochemical properties. Here we address this topic on the microscopic level by employing quasielastic neutron scattering (QENS) and provide information about the stochastic ionic motions in the N-alkylpyridinium based ILs in a relatively expanded time range, from short time (subpicosecond) particle rattling to long time diffusive regime (hundreds of picoseconds). We have systematically investigated the effect of the alkyl chain length on the picosecond dynamics by employing partial deuteration of the samples and varying the number of carbon atoms in the alkyl substituent. The localized dynamics of the side groups have appeared to be enhanced for bulkier cations, which is opposite to the trend observed for the translational motion. This result highlights the role of the conformational flexibility of the alkyl group on the dynamical properties of ILs.

Quasielastic neutron scattering (QENS) has been used to study the cation dynamics in the pyridinium based ionic liquid (IL) 1-N-butylpyridinium bis((trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl)imide (BuPy-Tf(2)N). This IL allows for a detailed investigation of the dynamics of the cations only, due to the huge incoherent scattering cross section of the cation (σ(inc)(cation)σ(inc)(anion)). The measured spectra can be decomposed into two Lorentzian lines, indicative of two distinct dynamic processes. The slower of these two processes is diffusive in nature, whereas the faster one can be attributed to localized motions. The temperature dependence of the diffusion coefficient of the slow process follows an Arrhenius law, with an activation energy of E(A) = 14.8 ± 0.3 kJ/mol. Furthermore, we present here results from experiments with polarized neutrons. These experiments clearly show that the slower of the two observed processes is coherent, while the faster one is incoherent in nature.

We have investigated stochastic motions of the cations of the pyridinium based ILs (1-butylpyridinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide [BuPy][Tf2N], 1-dodecylpyridinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide [C12Py][Tf2N]) with different length of the alkyl substituent attached to the pyridinium ring. The accessible observation time at the instrument enabled us to consider the slower long-range motion and the faster localized one. Both of the processes are affected by the length of the alkyl chain. For better understanding of the localized process the quasielastic neutron scattering (QENS)-spectra of partially deuterated samples have been analyzed as well.
