Background Endometriosis is a condition of the female reproductive system associated with pelvic pain. Chronic pain can affect physical performance by limiting the functional activities, thus, it is hypothesized that women with endometriosis may also present decreased functional capacity, decreased strength, and mobility. The objective of this study is to compare physical performance in women with and without endometriosis. Methods This is a cross-sectional study composed of 115 women equally divided into two groups: the endometriosis group (EG), composed of women with a confirmed diagnosis of the disease by magnetic resonance imaging, and the comparator group (CG), consisting of women without suspicion of the disease. Physical performance (dependent variable) was assessed using hand dynamometry, the 6-min walk test (6MWT), gait speed, and the chair stands test. CG participants performed the tests during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle. Descriptive statistics, unpaired t-tests, and chi-square tests were used to describe and compare the groups. Multiple linear regression tested the associations adjusted for covariates (age, income, education, age at menarche, and body mass index). Results The EG had worse gait speed (mean difference: −0.11; 95% CI: [−0.18 to −0.04]), weaker grip strength (mean difference: −3.32; 95% CI: [−5.30 to −1.33]), shorter distance covered in the 6MWT (mean difference: −83.46; 95% CI: [−121.38 to −45.53]), and a lower number of repetitions in the chair stands test (mean difference: −8.44; 95% CI: [−10.64 to −6.25]) than the CG, even after adjusting for covariates. Conclusion Grip strength, lower limb strength, mobility, and functional capacity were worse in women diagnosed with endometriosis. Women with endometriosis should be encouraged to engage in physical exercise, adopt healthy lifestyle habits, and participate in rehabilitation activities to control pain, with the aim of reducing functional impairments.

The search for sustainability can be understood as a trajectory towards the maintenance of ecosystem services, which includes ways of minimizing the risk of losing them due to some imminent coastal hazard. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the state of key-ecosystem services of provisioning and regulation in the southern coast of the state of Santa Catarina in the face of coastal stressors. For the development of the research, eight types of ecosystems were identified and mapped, according to a key ecosystem service offered by each of them, and the four largest in area were selected to apply the environmental valuation methodologies. The methodologies used were the Avoided Costs Method (ACM) and the Replacement Cost Method (RCM). The ACM calculates the economic value of the benefits that an ecosystem provides that would not be available if it did not exist. In turn, the RCM is based on the replacement cost of a damaged asset. Valuation results for Agriculture and Cattle farming; Continental waters and Marine environment; and Afforestation were respectively 1.74; 2.86; 2.89 million of dollars per year, while results for Dunes, Beaches and Restingas were in the range of USD 3,120–6,240 ha-1 yr-1. These values should be understood as approximations of the true economic dimension of the damages caused by the use of ecosystems, since they correspond to how much the environment is capable of monetarily returning to individuals. Furthermore, these values cannot be used to calculate fines in case of environmental degradation.

Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a gastrointestinal complication of premature infants with high rates of morbidity and mortality. A comprehensive view of the cellular changes and aberrant interactions that underlie NEC is lacking. This study aimed at filling in this gap. We combine single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNAseq), T-cell receptor beta (TCRβ) analysis, bulk transcriptomics, and imaging to characterize cell identities, interactions, and zonal changes in NEC. We find an abundance of proinflammatory macrophages, fibroblasts, endothelial cells as well as T cells that exhibit increased TCRβ clonal expansion. Villus tip epithelial cells are reduced in NEC and the remaining epithelial cells up-regulate proinflammatory genes. We establish a detailed map of aberrant epithelial-mesenchymal-immune interactions that are associated with inflammation in NEC mucosa. Our analyses highlight the cellular dysregulations of NEC-associated intestinal tissue and identify potential targets for biomarker discovery and therapeutics.

Abstract Placental function requires organized growth, transmission of nutrients, and an anti-inflammatory milieu between the maternal and fetal interface, but placental factors important for its function remain unclear. Renalase is a pro-survival, anti-inflammatory flavoprotein found to be critical in other tissues. We examined the potential role of renalase in placental development. PCR, bulk RNA sequencing, immunohistochemistry, and immunofluorescence for renalase and its binding partners, PMCA4b and PZP, were performed on human placental tissue from second-trimester and full-term placentas separated into decidua, placental villi and chorionic plates. Quantification of immunohistochemistry was used to localize renalase across time course from 17 weeks to term. Endogenous production of renalase was examined in placental tissue and organoids. Renalase and its receptor PMCA4b transcripts and proteins were present in all layers of the placenta. Estimated RNLS protein levels did not change with gestation in the decidual samples. However, placental villi contained more renalase immunoreactive cells in fetal than full-term placental samples. RNLS co-labeled with markers for Hofbauer cells and trophoblasts within the placental villi. Endogenous production of RNLS, PMCA4b, and PZP by trophoblasts was validated in placental organoids. Renalase is endogenously expressed throughout placental tissue and specifically within Hofbauer cells and trophoblasts, suggesting a potential role for renalase in placental development and function. Future studies should assess renalase’s role in normal and diseased human placenta.

Although extensively used in the academic literature, workaholism as a concept has been explained in different ways, which has influenced the development and use of some measurement tools. As such, this article aims to address the subject through a systematic study review focusing on articles where the main objective was to develop, adapt, or analyze the psychometric properties of a workaholism scale. The main purpose is to describe the state of the art concerning workaholism measurement tools, highlighting trends and research perspectives for further research. In essence, this study may serve as a summary and starting point for scholars interested in measuring workaholism. It was observed that the discrepancy concerning the definition of workaholism has resulted in scales that attempt to evaluate diverging conceptualizations. Moreover, each scale has been readapted when tested in different countries. For further investigations, it is important to converge the concept of workaholism and validate the scales across differing contexts, regarding the industry, culture, and country of the sample.

As life expectancy continues to increase in most EU Member States, smart technologies can help enable older people to continue living at home, despite the challenges accompanying the ageing process. The Innovation Action (IA) SHAPES ‘Smart and Healthy Ageing through People Engaging in Supportive Systems’ funded by the EU under the Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme (grant agreement number 857159) attends to these topics to support active and healthy ageing and the wellbeing of older adults. This protocol article outlines the SHAPES project’s objectives and aims, methods, structure, and expected outcomes. SHAPES seeks to build, pilot, and deploy a large-scale, EU-standardised interoperable, and scalable open platform. The platform will facilitate the integration of a broad range of technological, organisational, clinical, educational, and social solutions. SHAPES emphasises that the home is much more than a house-space; it entails a sense of belonging, a place and a purpose in the community. SHAPES creates an ecosystem – a network of relevant users and stakeholders – who will work together to scale-up smart solutions. Furthermore, SHAPES will create a marketplace seeking to connect demand and supply across the home, health and care services. Finally, SHAPES will produce a set of recommendations to support key stakeholders seeking to integrate smart technologies in their care systems to mediate care delivery. Throughout, SHAPES adopts a multidisciplinary research approach to establish an empirical basis to guide the development of the platform. This includes long-term ethnographic research and a large-scale pan-European campaign to pilot the platform and its digital solutions within the context of seven distinct pilot themes. The project will thereby address the challenges of ageing societies in Europe and facilitate the integration of community-based health and social care. SHAPES will thus be a key driver for the transformation of healthcare and social care services across Europe.

Abstract This paper analyzes mineralogical, geochemical, and geochronological aspects, along with the effect of hydrothermal/metasomatic overprints, to identify the presence of primary phosphate as well as depositional and paleoenvironmental conditions in marble and calcsilicate sequences recrystallized under transitional amphibolite-granulite metamorphic conditions in the Tanque Novo-Ipirá Complex within the Salvador-Curaçá Orogen, northeastern São Francisco Craton, state of Bahia, Brazil. Petrographic studies have identified up to 10 vol.% disseminated apatite and whole-rock P2O5 contents up to 3.2 wt.%. Post-depositional events affected the lithofacies to varying degrees. Late hydrothermalism did not modify the rare earth element and yttrium (REEY) patterns considerably. When normalized to Post-Archean Australian Shale (PAAS), these lithofacies are marked by flat pattern REEY, true negative Ce anomalies, and positive Y and Gd. The highly variable Eu anomalies were inherited from the source composition but may have been affected by interaction with fluids. U-Pb LA-ICP-MS (laser ablation multicollector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry) ages indicate a maximum depositional age of 2128 Ga, as well as Paleoproterozoic and Neoarchean sources. Samples with anomalous phosphorus show Y/Ho ratios >30 and Ce/Ce* anomalies between 0.53 and 1.0 with an average of 0.70, suggesting a sub-oxic environment for phosphate precipitation.

This study highlights the social and labor relations between the liners engaged in domestic services, their former owners and the other workers of the nineteenth century Recife families. These relations were influenced by the different conjunctures arising from the emancipationist politics of the imperial state and from the crisis of slavery in the second half of the nineteenth century. Grounded in paternalism, they produced dependent freedoms and continued exploitation and control, traditionally linked to slave labor, over them. On the other hand, these social relations were not only dictated by paternalism and domesticity. Maids and nurses, especially lining (forro) and free, were able to enjoy more and less autonomy and were part of the contractual logic of work, including demanding in court the payment of unpaid wages.

The Shifting Habitat Mosaic refers to temporal changes in the spatial pattern of habitats, through the flood and dry pulses. This work mapped the dynamics of a Shifting Mosaic associated with the flood and dry pulses in the Environmental Protection Area of the Banhado Grande (EPABG). The research was divided into four stages: i) acquisition of satellite images; ii) obtaining rainfall river basin data from the Gravataí River; iii) identification of the flood and dry pulses; and iv) mapping of the Shifting Mosaic in the wetlands of the EPABG. In large swaths of flooding, a shifting connectivity is established between the AUs of EPABG, providing several interactions among these wetlands, such as nutrient exchange, sediments and living organisms. It was found that in periods where the accumulation of precipitation in the last 30 days is greater than 200 mm, we have the presence of predominantly aquatic mosaic with the presence of predominantly aquatic animals and vegetation; In periods where the cumulative precipitation in the 30 days is less than 200 mm, a terrestrial mosaic predominates, with increase of ciliary vegetation.

Introduction: Boardwalk Cisterns is a government program that aims to attend a population with precarious access to water in Brazil. Developed as part of the Zero Hunger strategy, it intends to increase food security and contribute to the realization of the human right to food. The objective of this study was to assess farmers' perceptions of the Boardwalk Cisterns program and its impact on the food security situation of beneficiary households. Methods: Data were collected through a descriptive cross-sectional quali-quantitative survey. Questionnaires were applied to farming families selected from two municipalities in the state of Alagoas (Northeast Brazil), containing questions on sociodemographic characteristics, production methods, and food security status. The Free Evocation Technique for social representation, analyzed through the software Ensemble of Programs Permettant L'analyze des Évocations, was used to ascertain farmers' perceptions of the program. Results: The study showed a positive perception of the interviewees in relation to the boardwalk cisterns. The program brought some improvement in the agricultural production conditions and, consequently, in the food security situation of the households. Corn, beans and cassava were the most common crops, with almost half of this production (48.3%) destined for consumption by the families themselves. Farmers also reported having more water, allowing them to plant more fruit trees, as well as medicinal and ornamental plants. Nevertheless, 79.1% of the households interviewed were still in a situation of food insecurity, of which 28.1% were classified as mild food insecurity, 26% as moderate food insecurity, and 25% as severe food insecurity. Conclusion: Farmers were correct in their perception that the Boardwalk Cisterns program improved their food security situation. The program resulted in greater access to water, and greater production and consumption of food. However, by itself, the Boardwalk Cisterns program was not enough to raise beneficiary families above their food-insecure status. The program alleviated the problem of food insecurity, but other complementary government interventions are needed to guarantee the food security of families living in extreme poverty.

ABSTRACT Objective: To analyze the experiences of families in the exercise of the rights of children with chronic conditions in public health, education and social assistance institutions. Method: ethnographic multiple case study, with qualitative approach, following the theoretical approach of Boaventura Santos. Experiences of the families of these children in a city were studied through interviews with family members, managers and professionals from social institutions (35), participant observations in social spaces (13) and creation of eco-maps (3). Critical Discourse Analysis was performed. Results: the offer of services is lower than the demand, and exclusion processes persist. Given the hegemony of neoliberal and normality ideologies, meetings between family members and professionals revealed obstacles to civil rights; however, when these ideologies were challenged, the realization of their rights was enhanced. Final considerations: the care to promote civil rights requires family members, managers and professionals to develop subjectivities that overcome neoliberal and normality ideologies, recognizing these children as subjects of law.

Summary: Previous observations suggest the existence of ‘Active sleep’ in cephalopods. To investigate in detail the behavioral structure of cephalopod sleep, we video-recorded four adult specimens of Octopus insularis and quantified their distinct states and transitions. Changes in skin color and texture and movements of eyes and mantle were assessed using automated image processing tools, and arousal threshold was measured using sensory stimulation. Two distinct states unresponsive to stimulation occurred in tandem. The first was a ‘Quiet sleep’ state with uniformly pale skin, closed pupils, and long episode durations (median 415.2 s). The second was an ‘Active sleep’ state with dynamic skin patterns of color and texture, rapid eye movements, and short episode durations (median 40.8 s). ‘Active sleep’ was periodic (60% of recurrences between 26 and 39 min) and occurred mostly after ‘Quiet sleep’ (82% of transitions). These results suggest that cephalopods have an ultradian sleep cycle analogous to that of amniotes.

ABSTRACT Objectives: to identify predisposing and enabling factors as well as the health needs associated with the discontinuance of outpatient follow-up of newborns who were hospitalized at neonatal intensive care unit. Methods: cross-sectional study, using the behavioral model of health services use. The study was composed of 358 mothers and newborns referred to the outpatient follow-up after discharge. Characterization, perception of social support, postnatal depression, and attendance to appointments data were collected, analyzed by the R software (3.3.1). Results: outpatient follow-up was discontinued by 31.28% of children in the first year after discharge. In multiple regression analysis, the chance of discontinuance was higher for newborns who used mechanical ventilation (OR = 1.68; 95%CI 1.04-2.72) and depended on technology (OR = 3.54; 95%CI 1.32-9.5). Conclusions: predisposing factors were associated with the discontinuance of follow-up; enabling factors and health needs did not present a significant association. Children with more complex health conditions require additional support to participate in follow-up programs, thus ensuring the continuity of care.

As people age, they are more likely to develop multiple chronic diseases and experience a decline in some of their physical and cognitive functions, leading to the decrease in their ability to live independently. Innovative technology-based interventions tailored to older adults’ functional levels and focused on healthy lifestyles are considered imperative. This work proposed a framework of active and healthy ageing through the integration of a broad spectrum of digital solutions into an open Pan-European technological platform in the context of the SHAPES project, an EU-funded innovation action. In conclusion, the SHAPES project can potentially engage older adults in a holistic technological ecosystem and, therefore, facilitate the maintenance of a high-quality standard of life.

ABSTRACT Objective: to identify aspects that contribute to the discontinuation of outpatient follow-up of newborns from Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU) from the perspective of mothers. Method: exploratory, qualitative study, whose theoretical framework was Symbolic Interactionism. Fifteen mothers of children with NICU who discontinued outpatient follow-up in Belo Horizonte-MG were included in a semi-structured interview. Data were analyzed based on the proposal of Hsieh and Shannon. Results: distance from the health service, absence of family support, difficulty in leaving work, maternal health status, organization of the health service itself and deficiency of public transportation were predisposing factors for outpatient abandonment. Mothers understand that their children do not need differentiated care of children at usual risk. Conclusion: service organization, socioeconomic status of the family and social support perceived by mothers were related with the lack of compliance with outpatient follow-up.

Electric submersible pump (ESP) systems are commonly used as an artificial lift technique by the petroleum industry. Operations of ESPs in oil wells are subjected to performance degradation due to the effect of oil viscosity. To understand this effect a numerical study to simulate the flow in three stages of a multistage mixed-flow type ESP operating with a wide range of fluid viscosities, flow rates, and rotational speeds was conducted. The problem was solved by using a commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software. The numerical model was validated with experimental head curves from the literature at different viscosities and rotational speeds available for the same ESP model used in this study, and good agreement was found. Performance degradation was evaluated by analyzing the effect of viscosity on head and flow rate. In addition, a flow field analysis to compare the flow behavior when the pump operates at different viscosities was carried out. The interaction between stages was also analyzed, and the influence of a previous stage on the upstream flow was evidenced. The flow field was analyzed at a curved surface that follows the complex mixed-flow geometry of the stages. CFD proved to be useful for exploring this kind of feature, a task whose accomplishment by means of experimental methods is not trivial. Such analysis helps to understand the flow pattern behind head and flow rate degradation when the Reynolds number is decreased. The results from this work are helpful as they provide a basis to estimate performance degradation for general scenarios.

ABSTRACT CONTEXT: Complex karyotypes in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) are characterized by an overall low response rate with frequent relapses after clinical treatment. CASE REPORT: Here, we describe the case of a 61-year-old obese female with clinically diagnosed AML who presented a complex karyotype involving an uncommon abnormality: ring chromosome 11. Immunophenotypic analysis confirmed the diagnosis. Classical and molecular cytogenetic analyses, using GTG banding and FISH (fluorescence in situ hybridization), revealed the presence of complex structural rearrangement involving r(11), add(12)(p13), der(5) and der(13). CONCLUSIONS: Molecular cytogenetic analysis is suitable for better identification and characterization of chromosomal rearrangements in AML. Case reports like this, as well as population-based studies, are necessary for understanding the karyotypic changes that occur in humans.

A paciente tinha insuficiência venosa crônica e a lesão respondeu bem ao uso de bandagens elásticas e repouso com a perna elevadaAcroangiodermatitis, often known as pseudo-Kaposi sarcoma, is an uncommon angioproliferative entity related to chronic venous insufficiency, arteriovenous fistulae, paralysed limbs, amputation stumps, vascular syndromes and conditions associated with thrombosis. It presents most frequently as purple macules, papules or plaques in the dorsal aspects of the feet, especially the toes, and the malleoli. We report a case of acroangiodermatitis in the plantar aspect of the foot, misdiagnosed for two years, in which haematoxylin-eosin hystopathological stain and immunolabeling with CD34 histochemistry examination were decisive for diagnosis. Patient had chronic venous insufficiency. The lesion responded well to the treatment with a combination of leg elevation and compression

This study aims to discuss and support the activities of social workers in social services that assist children and adolescents with cancer, as well as their families, in palliative care. It also aims to contribute to teaching and research in the area. Based on a literature review, the article discusses the following lines of analysis: the role of Social Work and health care for families, features of childhood cancer and palliative care and how illness and death in childhood represent a tragedy for their families. It is necessary to understand who these families are, and how the impacts brought by the current economic system affect the relations among it ́s members during the time of treatment. Considering this background, there are challenges for Social Work, such as the integration of social policies for intervention in health care as well as streightening Social Workers Professional activity and also putting into practice Political and Ethical Projects in interdisciplinary practices. Considering these highlights some activities for professional intervention were proposed in the end of the paper.

PURPOSE: To compare the viability of human hepatocytes dissociated by the ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid and collagenase techniques. METHODS: Hepatocytes were prepared by dissociation of liver fragments obtained from hepatectomies performed for therapeutic purposes at the Service of Digestive Tract Surgery, Federal University of Triângulo Mineiro. RESULTS: During the first 4 days of the experiment, 70% of the cells presented birefringent membranes and were not stained with 2% erythrosine, and were therefore considered to be viable. During the first 3 days, hepatocyte viability was on average 71% in the EDTA group and 76% in the collagenase group, with no significant difference between groups. No significant difference was observed between groups at any time. The secretion of albumin by the cultured hepatocytes was preserved up to the seventh day. Mean albumin secretion during the first 3 days was 50 µg/ml in the two groups and a reduction of albumin production was observed from the fourth to the seventh day. Again, no significant difference was observed between groups at any time. CONCLUSION: Cell viability and preservation of albumin secretion by hepatocytes are similar for the EDTA and collagenase techniques.OBJETIVO: Comparar a viabilidade dos hepatócitos humanos dissociados pelas técnicas do ácido etilenodiaminotetracético e da colagenase.
