The reconstruction of alveolar ridge defects can be challenging, especially when the lesion is large, noncontained, and located in the esthetic region. The present report describes the guided bone regeneration (GBR) procedure and prosthetic rehabilitation of a severe perforation defect in the anterior maxilla. Clinical and radiographic evaluations of the lesion indicated an endodonticperiodontal origin, and biopsy results confirmed the absence of malignancy. GBR was performed with the use of cortical mineralized freeze-dried bone allograft (FDBA) combined with recombinant human platelet-derived growth factor-BB (rhPDGF-BB) and a resorbable collagen membrane without the use of tenting or fixation screws. Six months after GBR, CBCT revealed adequate bone fill for the placement of 4.1 × 10-mm or 4.1 × 12-mm dental implants. The implant surgery was fully guided with a two-stage approach. After 10 months of healing, the implants were loaded with a screw-retained porcelain partial denture. The staged GBR approach, using a combination of FDBA, rhPDGF-BB, and a resorbable membrane without the use of tenting or fixation screws, resulted in significant bone fill, successful implant placement, and a functional and esthetic implant-supported prosthesis. Objectives: Autoimmune activation by COVID-19 infection/vaccination has been postulated to be responsible for initiating or reactivating multiple types of oral mucosal immune disorders. These include: oral lichen planus; oral pemphigoid; either bullous pemphigoid or mucous membrane pemphigoid with oral involvement; pemphigus vulgaris with oral involvement; and Sjögren disease. In addition, chronic conditions such as oral burning, xerostomia, or changes in taste and/or smell have also been linked to COVID-19 infection/vaccination. Data sources: Part 1 (mucosal conditions): an English-language literature review of Pubmed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Embase was performed searching cases of oral lichen planus, oral bullous pemphigoid, mucous membrane pemphigoid, pemphigus vulgaris, and COVID-19 infection/vaccination, with additional cases from the authors’ clinical practice presented. Part 2 (nonmucosal conditions): Cases of initiated or flared Sjögren disease, chronic oral burning, or xerostomia after COVID-19 infection/vaccination from the authors’ clinical practice were aggregated. Results: The literature review discovered 29 cases of oral lichen planus following COVID-19 infection/vaccination. For bullous pemphigoid, 10 cases were identified after infection/vaccination. The number of pemphigus vulgaris cases following infection/vaccination was 28. The majority of mucosal cases were reported after vaccination. Most reported initial disease, but a substantial amount included recurrences of existing diseases. Nonmucosal disease: Sjögren disease, chronic oral burning, or xerostomia after COVID-19 infection/vaccination cases totaled 12 cases identified from the authors’ clinical practice, with the majority occurring after infection. Conclusions: Chronic conditions after infection with COVID-19 or vaccination remain relatively rare and self-limited, yet reinforce the importance of comprehensive history taking involving COVID-19 to differentiate potential etiologic factors for these conditions. This paper is aimed at comprehensively reviewing olfactory and gustatory disorders caused by SARS-CoV-2 in children and adults. An electronic and manual search was done on three data bases: MEDLINE, Embase, and Web of Science. Inclusion criteria included publications written in English, involving humans in the age range of 0 to 99 years that were captured by a controlled vocabulary of thesaurus terms. Olfactory and gustatory disorders rates in COVID-19 ranged from 22% to 71.9% in adults and 16.6% to 25.8% in children. Olfactory and gustatory disorders might appear as the first symptom, and in adults might even be the only symptom (4.8% to 10%). Anosmia is the most common olfactory disorder and hypogeusia is the most common gustatory disorder. In 33% to 89% of cases, olfactory and gustatory disorders resolve spontaneously within a few weeks, coinciding with the resolution of other COVID-19 symptoms, both in adults and children. However, in some patients, olfactory and gustatory disorders persist beyond the resolution of other symptoms. Notably, children generally experience a swifter and more favorable recovery compared to adults. The precise pathogenesis underlying olfactory and gustatory disorders in the context of COVID-19 remains unclear and is likely multifactorial. Presently, no established treatment protocol exists for olfactory and gustatory disorders and current treatments reviewed lack robust evidence and are not readily available for clinical use. Olfactory training represents the only therapy currently recommended by international authorities. Pediatric practitioners and general dental practitioners should be aware of olfactory and gustatory disorders in both pediatric and adult populations, including their biologic mechanisms, treatment options, and recovery rates. ObjectivesMethodsResultsDiscussionConclusionThis systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to estimate the rate of taste disturbance following cochlear implantation.The review was designed according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Included studies psychophysically measured taste. DerSimonian and Laird random-effects models were used. An overall mean from studies reporting a single mean of taste strip performance was calculated using inverse variance method for pooling.Of 380 studies identified, 9 were included across which 55 cases of postoperative taste disturbance were reported in 498 patients. Taste was tested at variable timepoints, from <1 week to ≥6 months postoperatively. The overall rate of postoperative taste disturbance was 13.5% (95% CI, 7.6-20.7%) with high heterogeneity between studies (I2 = 62%).13.5% might indicate a higher prevalence of taste disturbance following cochlear implantation compared to the general population. However, the confidence we can assign to our calculated rate is limited by significant heterogeneity and potential publication bias. Studies reporting mean taste strip scores generally found reduced taste function on the side of the tongue ipsilateral to implantation, but this reduction wasn't statistically significant.Further research, employing more robust and standardised methodologies, is necessary to accurately ascertain the rate and nature of taste disturbance following cochlear implantation. Objectives: The underlying mechanisms of burning mouth syndrome (BMS) remain unclear leading to challenges and unsatisfactory management. Current treatments focus primarily on symptom relief, with few consistently achieving a 50% reduction in pain. This review aims to explore animal models of BMS to gain a better understanding of the underlying mechanisms and to discuss potential and existing knowledge gaps. Methods: A comprehensive review of PubMed®, Google Scholar, and Scopus was performed to assess advances and significant gaps of existing rodent models that mimic BMS‐related symptoms. Results: Rodent models of BMS involve reproduction of dry‐tongue, chorda tympani transection, or overexpression of artemin protein. Existing preclinical models tend to highlight one specific etiopathogenesis and often overlook sex‐ and hormone‐specific factors. Conclusion: Combining aspects from various BMS models could prove beneficial in developing comprehensive experimental designs and outcomes encompassing the multifaceted nature of BMS. Hedgehog pathway inhibitors (HHIs) have broadened the treatment options available for patients with advanced basal cell carcinoma (BCC) for whom traditional therapeutic approaches are not feasible or effective. Sonidegib and vismodegib are oral HHIs that were approved for treatment of patients with advanced BCC after demonstrating promising efficacy in the pivotal Phase II BOLT (NCT01327053) and ERIVANCE (NCT00833417) trials, respectively. However, the incidence and types of treatment-emergent adverse events (AEs) observed with these agents may limit continuous use of HHIs and ultimately impact clinical outcomes. In this review, we summarize the safety and tolerability profiles of sonidegib and vismodegib and discuss potential management strategies for HHI class-effect AEs, including muscle spasms, creatine phosphokinase increase, alopecia, and dysgeusia. These AEs primarily occur early in treatment and can lead to treatment discontinuation. Differences in the pharmacokinetic profiles of sonidegib and vismodegib may contribute to the variability noted in times to onset and resolution of these and other AEs. Evidence suggests that protocol modifications, such as treatment interruptions and dose reductions, are effective ways to manage AEs while maintaining disease control. Nonpharmacologic and pharmacologic interventions may also be considered as part of an AE management strategy. Overall, healthcare providers and patients with advanced BCC should be aware of the HHI class-effect AEs and plan effective management strategies to avoid treatment discontinuation and optimize therapeutic response. Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has caused over 68.7 million infections and 1.35 million deaths in South America. There are limited data on SARS-CoV-2 seropositivity and its determinants from Andean countries prior to mass vaccinations against COVID-19. Objective: To estimate SARS-CoV-2 seropositivity and its determinants before vaccination in occupational groups of adults presumed to have different levels of exposure and associations with potential symptomatology. Methods: We measured seropositivity of anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibodies in a cross-sectional study of vaccine-naïve adults aged 18 years and older, recruited within three occupational risk groups (defined as low [LR], moderate [MR], and high [HR]) between January and September 2021 in two Andean cities in Ecuador. Associations with risk factors were estimated using logistic regression. Results: In a sample of 882 adults, IgG seropositivity for the three different occupational risk groups was 39.9% (CI 95% 35.3–44.6), 74.6% (CI 95% 66.4–81.4), and 39.0% (CI 95% 34.0–44.4) for the HR, MR, and LR groups, respectively. History of an illness with loss of taste and/or smell was significantly associated with seropositivity in all occupational groups, with adjusted ORs of 14.31 (95%CI, 5.83–35.12; p<0.001), 14.34 (95%CI 3.01–68.42; p<0.001), and 8.79 (95%CI 2.69–28.72; p<0.001), for the HR, MR, and LR groups, respectively; while fever was significant for the LR group with an adjusted OR of 1.24 (95%CI, 1.11–4.57; p = 0.025) and myalgia for the HR group with an adjusted OR of 2.07 (95%CI, 1.13–3.81; p = 0.019). Conclusion: Notable proportions of seropositivity were seen in all occupational groups between January and September 2021 prior to mass vaccination. Background: The loss of taste and smell is a common symptom of COVID-19, affecting individuals' quality of life and nutritional status. Detecting sweet thresholds during infection and recovery periods can assist in implementing dietary modifications and nutritional strategies for these patients. Objective: To investigate the changes and differences in sweet detection thresholds of confirmed COVID-19 patients on Day 1, Day 10, and Day 14 of the infection and recovery periods. Methods: The demographic factors such as gender, smoking status, BMI, and age group were abstracted on Excel sheet from the medical health records for confirmed COVID-19 patients, who were admitted to King Fahad General Hospital in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, a COVID-19 care facility, from September 2021 to July 2022. Sweet detection thresholds were determined using a pair-wise comparison procedure and sugar solutions with varying concentrations, arranged in ascending order and presented to participants until the lowest detected concentration was noted after three consecutive positive detections, with the median just noticeable difference (JND) value calculated as the population average threshold. Sensory tests were conducted on COVID-19 patients during their infection and recovery periods to evaluate their taste sensation thresholds. The demographic factors of gender, smoking status, BMI, and age group were considered in the analysis. Results: A total of 37 patients who met the inclusion criteria of the study were enrolled as participants. Significant variances in sweet detection thresholds were observed among the COVID-19 patients, with consistent decreases over the three testing days, indicating increasing sucrose sensitivity. Infected men showed significant returns to sweet detection thresholds on Day 14 compared to women, while infected smokers exhibited greater recoveries than non-smokers. Overweight patients had consistently elevated thresholds and recovery rates that were comparable to those of normal-weight patients by Day 14, while younger patients had lower thresholds than their older counterparts. On Day 14, the thresholds had significantly recovered to a level comparable to that of healthy individuals (approximately 0.23%). Conclusion: These findings suggest that sweet detection thresholds can be used as a marker for assessing the progression and recovery of COVID-19 patients. These findings highlight the importance of recognizing and managing alterations in sweet detection thresholds promptly in COVID-19 patients, as this could positively impact dietary management, nutritional recommendations, and interventions during infection and recovery periods. Taste perception is one of the important senses in mammals. Taste dysfunction causes significant inconvenience in daily life, leading to subhealth and even life‐threatening condition. Aging is a major cause to taste dysfunction, while the underlying feature related to gustatory aging is still not known. Using single‐cell RNA Sequencing, differentially expressed genes between aged and young taste papillae are identified, including upregulated mt‐Nd4l and Xist, as well as downregulated Hsp90ab1 and Tmem59. In the Tmem59−/− circumvallate papillae (CVP), taste mature cell generation is impaired by reduction in the numbers of PLCβ2+ and Car4+ cells, as well as decreases in expression levels of taste transduction genes. Tmem59−/− mice showed deficits in sensitivities to tastants. Through screening by GenAge and DisGeNET databases, aging‐dependent genes and oral disease‐associated genes are identified in taste papillae. In the CVP, aging promotes intercellular communication reciprocally between (cycling) basal cell and mature taste cell by upregulated Crlf1/Lifr and Adam15/Itga5 signaling. By transcriptional network analysis, ribosome proteins, Anxa1, Prdx5, and Hmgb1/2 are identified as transcriptional hubs in the aged taste papillae. Chronological aging‐associated transcriptional changes throughout taste cell maturation are revealed. Aged taste papillae contain more Muc5b+ cells that are not localized in gustatory gland. Background/Objectives: Taste disorders have a negative impact on meal enjoyment, which is essential for maintaining adequate nutrition and quality of life. Japan is a rapidly aging society with an increasing number of individuals with taste disorders. However, despite the increasing prevalence of taste disorders, the correlation between oral frailty and taste sensitivity remains largely unknown. The objective of this study was to assess the relationship between oral health status and taste sensitivity among the Japanese population. Methods: Participants were recruited from Kanagawa Dental University Hospital Medical–Dental Collaboration Center between 2018 and 2021. The exclusion criteria were severe systemic infections, pregnancy, or lactation. Clinical examinations, oral function assessments, and taste tests were conducted using tap water and 1% sweet, 0.3% salty, 0.03% umami, and 0.1% umami tastants. The relationships between oral function, systemic indicators, and taste sensitivity were statistically evaluated. Results: Of the 169 participants included in this cross-sectional study, 39.6% were male and 60.4% were female (median age, 68 years). Participants with low taste sensitivity showed a decline in tongue–lip motor function, independent of age, sex, or smoking status. A multiple logistic regression analysis conducted using two age categories—younger than 65 years and older than 65 years—revealed an association between tongue–lip motor function and taste sensitivity among participants younger than 65 years. Conclusions: Decreased taste sensitivity is associated with tongue–lip motor function. Aims: We report on investigations exploring the P2X3‐receptor antagonist filapixant's effect on taste perception and cough‐reflex sensitivity and describe its pharmacokinetics, including its CYP3A4‐interaction potential. Methods: In a randomized, placebo‐controlled, double‐blind study, 3 × 12 healthy men (18‐45 years) were assigned (3:1) to filapixant (20, 80 or 250 mg by mouth) or placebo twice daily over 2 weeks. A single dose of midazolam (1 mg), a CYP3A4 substrate, was administered with and without filapixant. Assessments included a taste‐strips test, a taste questionnaire, cough challenge with adenosine triphosphate, adverse event reports and standard safety assessments. Results: Taste disturbances were observed mainly in the 250‐mg group: six of nine participants (67%) in this group reported hypo‐ or dysgeusia in the questionnaire; eight participants (89%) reported taste‐related adverse events. Five participants (56%) had a decrease in overall taste‐strips‐test scores ≥2 points (point estimate −1.1 points, 90% confidence interval [−3.3; 1.1]). Cough counts increased with adenosine triphosphate concentration but without major differences between treatments. Filapixant exposure increased proportionally to dose. Co‐administration of filapixant had no clinically relevant effect on midazolam pharmacokinetics. Area under the concentration‐time curve ratios and 90% confidence intervals were within 80‐125%. No serious or severe adverse events were reported. Conclusions: Overall, filapixant was safe and well tolerated, apart from mild, transient taste disturbances. Such disturbances occurred more frequently than expected based on (in vitro) receptor‐selectivity data, suggesting that other factors than P2X3:P2X2/3 selectivity might also play an important role in this context. Gefapixant (MK‐7264, RO4926219, AF‐219) is a first‐in‐class P2X3 antagonists being developed to treat refractory or unexplained chronic cough. The initial single‐ and multiple‐dose safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetics of gefapixant at doses ranging from 7.5 to 1800 mg were assessed in four clinical trials. Following single‐dose administration of 10‐450 mg, the pharmacokinetic (PK) profile of gefapixant in plasma and urine demonstrated low inter‐subject variability and a dose‐proportional exposure. Following administration of multiple doses twice daily, the plasma exposures were dose‐proportional at doses ranging from 7.5 to 50 mg and less than dose‐proportional at doses ranging from 100 to 1800 mg. The time to mean peak drug concentration ranged from 2 to 3 h post‐dose, and steady state was achieved by 7 days after dosing, with an accumulation ratio of approximately 2, comparing data from day 1 to steady state. The mean apparent terminal half‐life ranged from 8.2 to 9.6 h. Gefapixant was primarily excreted unmodified in urine. Gefapixant was well tolerated following single‐dose administration up to 1800 mg and multiple doses up to 1800 mg twice daily; there were no serious adverse events (AEs) reported. Simple Summary: Patients with locally advanced or metastatic urothelial carcinoma have a poor prognosis. Enfortumab vedotin, administered after cisplatin-based chemotherapy and followed by immune checkpoint inhibitors, is widely known to prolong overall survival (OS). However, the predictive factors of enfortumab vedotin treatment that prolong OS remain unclear. In this study, patients who received enfortumab vedotin with shrinking tumors showed a significant increase in OS compared to those who received chemotherapy other than enfortumab vedotin or those who did not receive any treatment. Multivariate analysis identified neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio and dysgeusia as potential predictors of OS. Patients without these factors had a significantly prolonged OS compared to those with both factors. In real-world practice, enfortumab vedotin therapy is effective for patients with locally advanced or metastatic urothelial carcinoma. Randomized phase III trial results have demonstrated enfortumab vedotin (EV), an antibody–drug conjugate (ADC) consisting of an anti-Nectin-4 human IgG1 monoclonal antibody and monomethyl auristatin E, is a useful treatment for patients with locally advanced or metastatic urothelial carcinoma (la/mUC) that progressed after immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) therapies. This multicenter retrospective cohort study aimed to identify predictive factors for the efficacy of EV therapy and prolonged overall survival (OS) of patients in clinical practice. This study included patients with la/mUC who received ICI treatment. Patients who subsequently received EV treatment, those who received non-EV chemotherapy, and those who received no treatment were defined as EV, non-EV, and best supportive care (BSC) groups, respectively. The median OS was 20, 15, and 7 months in the EV, non-EV, and BSC groups, respectively (p < 0.001). Patients with la/mUC who had a complete or partial response after EV treatment had a significantly prolonged OS compared with those with stable or progressive disease. Univariate analysis showed age, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), dysgeusia, and rash as independent predictors of OS improvement. NLR and dysgeusia were independent predictors of OS after EV in multivariate analysis. Patients without these factors had a significantly prolonged OS compared to those with both factors. Even during the endemic phase of the COVID-19 pandemic, the impact of persistent symptoms on patients and healthcare systems remains significant. Thus, a more comprehensive understanding of these symptoms is essential. Using data from the Japan Society and New Tobacco Internet Survey conducted in February 2023, this cross-sectional study investigated the prevalence of, and changes in, persistent COVID-19 symptoms. In total, 21,108 individuals responded to the survey. Of these, 29.1 % (6143) had a history of COVID-19. Our analysis found that arm/leg/joint pain (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]: 1.17; 95 % confidence interval [95 % CI]: 1.03–1.33), back pain (aOR: 1.13; 95 % CI: 1.01–1.27), chest pain (aOR: 1.53; 95 % CI: 1.20–1.96), malaise (aOR: 1.14; 95 % CI: 1.02–1.28), loss of taste (aOR: 2.55; 95 % CI: 1.75–3.72), loss of smell (aOR: 2.33; 95 % CI: 1.67–3.26), memory impairment (aOR: 1.27; 95 % CI: 1.04–1.56), and cough (aOR: 1.72; 95 % CI: 1.38–2.13) were independently associated with a history of COVID-19 contracted more than two months but less than six months previously. Further, back pain (aOR: 1.24; 95 % CI: 1.04–1.47) and loss of taste (aOR: 2.28; 95 % CI: 1.24–4.21) showed independent association with COVID-19 contracted more than 12 months previously. Various symptoms were independently associated with a history of COVID-19. While most patients tend to recover within a year after contracting COVID-19, certain symptoms, such as back pain and loss of taste, persist longer than a year, underscoring public health concerns and emphasizing the need for health care services to support patients suffering from persistent symptoms. Parkinson's disease (PD) is a common multisystem neurodegenerative disorder affecting 1% of the population over the age of 60 years. The main neuropathological features of PD are the loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc) and the presence of alpha synuclein (αSyn)-rich Lewy bodies both manifesting with classical motor signs. αSyn has emerged as a key protein in PD pathology as it can spread through synaptic networks to reach several anatomical regions of the body contributing to the appearance of non-motor symptoms (NMS) considered prevalent among individuals prior to PD diagnosis and persisting throughout the patient's life. NMS mainly includes loss of taste and smell, constipation, psychiatric disorders, dementia, impaired rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, urogenital dysfunction, and cardiovascular impairment. This review summarizes the more recent findings on the impact of αSyn deposits on several prodromal NMS and emphasizes the importance of early detection of αSyn toxic species in biofluids and peripheral biopsies as prospective biomarkers in PD. Postacute symptoms are not uncommon after severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection with pre-Omicron variants. How the Omicron variant and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) booster vaccination influence the risk of postacute symptoms is less clear. We analyzed data from a nationwide Danish questionnaire study, EFTER-COVID, comprising 36 109 individuals aged ≥15 years who were tested between July 2021 and January 2022, to evaluate the associations of the Omicron variant and COVID-19 booster vaccination with postacute symptoms and new-onset general health problems 4 months after infection with SARS-CoV-2. Risk differences (RDs) were estimated by comparing Omicron cases with controls, comparing Omicron cases with Delta cases, and comparing Omicron cases vaccinated with 3 doses with those vaccinated with 2 doses, adjusting for age, sex, body mass index, self-reported chronic diseases, Charlson comorbidity index, health-care occupation, and vaccination status. Four months after testing for SARS-CoV-2 during the Omicron period, cases experienced substantial postacute symptoms and new-onset health problems in comparison with controls; the largest RD was observed for memory issues (RD = 7.4%; 95% CI, 6.4-8.3). However, risks were generally lower than those in the Delta period, particularly for dysosmia (RD = –15.0%; 95% CI, −17.0 to −13.2) and dysgeusia (RD = –11.2%; 95% CI, −13.2 to −9.5). Background: Although patients with advanced pancreatic cancer (PC) often experience dysgeusia with zinc deficiency during chemotherapy, data on zinc supplementation for dysgeusia and its effects on nutritional status are scarce. We aimed to examine the efficacy of zinc supplementation in patients with advanced PC. Methods: Thirty-three patients with unresectable PC who presented with dysgeusia and zinc deficiency during chemotherapy and received zinc acetate hydrate between January 2018 and December 2022 were included. We evaluated the changes in serum zinc levels and the improvement in dysgeusia. Among the 26 patients who received zinc supplementation for 12 weeks, we also compared patient characteristics and changes in serum zinc and albumin levels between patients who showed improvement in dysgeusia (effective group) and those who did not (non-effective group). Results: The serum zinc level increased significantly after zinc supplementation (median: 60 µg/dL at baseline, 99.5 µg/dL at 4 weeks, 101 µg/dL at 8 weeks and 101 µg/dL at 12 weeks). The rate of improvement in dysgeusia increased over time (18.2% at 4 weeks, 33.3% at 8 weeks, and 42.4% at 12 weeks). Comparing the effective group and non-effective group revealed that while the median serum albumin level of the effective group did not change, the non-effective group showed a significant decrease from baseline to 12 weeks (3.2 g/dL to 3.0 g/dL, p = 0.03). Conclusion: Zinc supplementation significantly increased serum zinc levels, improving dysgeusia. Objective: To reveal the clinical features and assess risk factors linked to brain fog and its societal implications, including labor productivity, providing valuable insights for the future care of individuals who have experienced coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19). Methods: We analyzed a comprehensive cohort dataset comprising 1,009 patients with COVID‐19 admitted to Japanese hospitals. To assess brain fog, we analyzed patients who responded to a questionnaire indicating symptoms such as memory impairment and poor concentration. Results: The prevalence of brain fog symptoms decreased 3 months posthospitalization but remained stable up to 12 months. Neurological symptoms such as taste and smell disorders and numbness at hospitalization correlated with a higher frequency of identifying brain fog as a long COVID manifestation. Our findings indicated that advanced age, female sex, a high body mass index, oxygen required during hospitalization, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, and elevated C‐reactive protein and elevated D‐dimer levels were risk factors in patients exhibiting brain fog. Additionally, we demonstrated the negative impact of brain fog on labor productivity by presenteeism scores. Interpretations: This study clarified the clinical characteristics of patients experiencing brain fog as a long COVID manifestation, specifically emphasizing neurological symptoms during hospitalization and their correlation with brain fog. There has been an increase of attention and awareness of smell and taste loss due to the impact of COVID-19. However, little is known about the influence of COVID-19 on the number of psychophysical tests performed, the timing of these tests, or the protection protocols employed to protect against virus transmission. This study aimed to explore the changes in examination approaches, types of tests employed, and safety measures adopted by clinicians before and after the COVID-19 pandemic. A survey was distributed to 404 institutes of the Oto-Rhino Laryngological Society of Japan, consisting of otolaryngologists working in university hospitals, general hospitals, and private clinics. The anonymous online survey contained questions related to safety measures and chemosensory assessments performed before and after the COVID-19 pandemic. Specifically, participants were queried on the number and types of examinations conducted, the type of examiners who performed them, the timing of tests in suspected and non-suspected COVID-19 cases, modifications made due to the pandemic, and the protective measures adopted during chemosensory examinations. Of the 201 respondents, representing a 50 % response rate, 49 % were from general hospitals, 48 % from university hospitals, and 3 % from private clinics. The study found a slight decrease in the overall number of chemosensory tests conducted post-COVID-19. In terms of who performed the test, there were no differences pre- and post- COVID-19. Most examinations (52–68 %) for suspected COVID-19 cases were performed 1–2 months after the onset of symptoms. Modifications in testing rooms and personal protective equipment (PPE) were reported by the majority of institutions post-pandemic. While different examination rooms or PPE were not commonly used based on a patient's previous COVID-19 diagnosis, changes were observed in testing practices. Most examinations were conducted in rooms with windows or fans, and PPE usage was high; surgical masks, eye visors or face shields, and disposable gloves being commonly used. Virus transmission from patient to examiner was reported in only one case during T&T olfactometer examination. We investigated the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the number of olfactory and gustatory tests performed, the type of examiner, the examination room, and the use of PPE and found no significant difference before and after the COVID-19 pandemic on these factors. Background Methods Results Conclusions Acne vulgaris is a very common inflammatory skin disease that significantly impacts the quality of life of affected individuals. Previous studies have indicated that individuals with acne vulgaris often have low levels of zinc, selenium, and vitamin D. However, these three nutrients have rarely been collectively examined in a single study. The objective of this study was to compare serum levels of zinc, selenium, and vitamin D in patients with acne vulgaris in comparison to a control group.This case–control study included 100 adult patients with acne vulgaris attending a dermatology clinic, in 2020. A group of 100 patients without acne vulgaris attending the same clinics were evaluated as controls. Participants' sociodemographic characteristics, including age, sex, occupation, alcohol consumption, and tobacco smoking were recorded. In addition, anthropometric indices, such as weight and height, were measured and the body mass index (BMI) was calculated accordingly. Acne severity was determined using Tutakne and Chari's grading system. Serum zinc, selenium, and vitamin D levels were evaluated in peripheral blood samples of all the participants.Acne patients and controls were comparable regarding age, sex, weight, height, BMI, occupation, alcohol consumption, and tobacco smoking (p > 0.05). Serum zinc, selenium, and vitamin D levels were all significantly lower in acne patients than in controls (p < 0.001). Furthermore, the frequency of abnormal zinc and vitamin D levels was significantly higher in acne patients (p = 0.002 and p = 0.001, respectively), but there was no significant difference between the two groups regarding abnormal serum selenium levels (p = 0.228). Also, serum zinc, selenium, and vitamin D levels lower levels in patients with grade 4 acne compared to other disease severity grades (p < 0.001).Patients with acne vulgaris have lower levels of serum zinc, selenium, and vitamin D compared to the control group. Orange juice is a highly nutritious beverage. Traditional pasteurization methods cause nutrient loss and taste changes. Plasma treatment (PT) is an emerging method with a high sterilization rate. This study investigated the effects of corona discharge plasma on the sterilization of orange juice by changes in color difference, total phenol content, and pH value. Single‐factor experiments revealed that higher voltage (40 kV) and longer sterilization time (25 min) had better sterilization effects. Response surface analysis indicated that frequency had the greatest impact on sterilization rates, and the optimal sterilization conditions were a voltage of 44.75 kV, a frequency of 9.46 kHz, and a sterilization time of 25 min. Under these conditions, the sterilization rate reached 97.9%, meeting the national standard of 104 colony‐forming units/mL (GB7101‐2022). Compared to untreated juices, the color difference value was 16.32, the pH value decreased by 0.12, and the total phenol content increased by 0.669 mg/mL. However, the evaporation of water plays an important role in increasing the total phenol co. Moreover, the comparative analysis showed that PT was comparable to pasteurization in terms of sterilization effects, flavor preservation, and the concentration of bioactive components. Simple Summary: Taste and smell alterations (TSAs) are a distressing yet underdiagnosed side effect in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. However, long-term investigations using both questionnaires and chemosensory tests are scarce. We examined the prevalence of quantitative and qualitative TSAs, as well as their connection with clinical characteristics such as age, sex, anorexia, and neuropathy. We also compared patients receiving perpetual or temporary chemotherapy. All patients were examined up to five times within 12 to 24 months, commencing before the beginning of chemotherapy. We found TSAs in approximately 4 out of 5 patients during chemotherapy. The highest prevalence was documented among patients above 60 years of age as well as among those reporting anorexia or presenting signs of neuropathy. Post-therapy, taste and smell function recovered; however, scores did not reach baseline levels within 6 to 12 months. Future investigations will assess potential interventions to prevent or reduce TSAs. Previous data regarding chemotherapy-induced olfactory and gustatory dysfunction (CIOGD) are heterogeneous due to inconsistent study designs and small numbers of patients. To provide consistent, reliable data, we conducted a cohort study using standardized testing. Patients diagnosed with lymphoma, leukemia, or gastrointestinal malignancies were examined up to five times (T1 to T5), beginning prior to chemotherapy. We examined patients receiving temporary treatment up to 12 months post-therapy. Clinical assessment included extensive questionnaires, psychophysical tests of olfactory and gustatory function, and measurement of peripheral neuropathy. Statistical analysis included non-parametric tests to evaluate the longitudinal development of CIOGD. Our data (n = 108) showed a significant decline in olfactory and gustatory testing during chemotherapy (p-values < 0.001). CIOGD appeared stronger among patients above 60 years, while sex did not matter significantly. However, we identified distinct associations between CIOGD and reported anorexia as well as with higher neuropathy scores. Self-assessment appeared less sensitive to chemosensory dysfunction than psychophysical testing. Post-therapy, olfactory and gustatory function regenerated, though baseline levels were not attained within 6 to 12 months. Objective: The novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) virus, responsible for the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, originated in China and swiftly spread globally, resulting in significant mortality worldwide. We aimed to create an overview of the significant symptoms, clinical indicators, and concurrent comorbidities observed in COVID-19 patients that require hospitalization and neurology consultation, adversely affecting the severe course of the disease and leading to mortality. Materials and Methods: We designed our study as a multicenter and cross-sectional survey, which was conducted with patients hospitalized in seven medical centers in Türkiye over six months. Results: A cohort of 504 patients diagnosed with COVID-19 were included in the study. In terms of the complaints at the time of admission, high fever (48%), cough (45%), sore throat (23%), and diarrhea (9%) were the most common symptoms expressed by the patients. The most commonly observed symptoms included myalgia (55%), headache (46%), loss of taste (46%), and loss of smell (39%). Furthermore, 68 patients (13.5%) within the cohort had a history of neurological diseases, distributed as follows: cerebrovascular attack (4%), migraine (2.8%), extrapyramidal disease (1.8%), dementia (1%), polyneuropathy (1%), epilepsy (0.6%), and demyelinating disease (0.6%). In the logistic regression analysis, key factors affecting mortality were identified as body mass index and age. Conclusion: The most common complaints in COVID-19 patients were high fever and sore throat. Fatigue, myalgia, headache, loss of smell, and taste were the most common symptoms. This article examines characteristics and pathogenesis of long COVID in children and adolescents, and their implications for nursing management. Long COVID is a complex set of symptoms that follows a SARS-CoV-2 infection. After the acute phase, children can develop long COVID with symptoms that vary in intensity and duration, and do not necessarily present progressively. Long COVID is a growing health concern among children because its symptoms often overlap and fluctuate. Symptoms depend upon the organ affected, and can consist of shortness of breath, extreme fatigue, headache, and cognitive and memory issues, among many others. Most children with long COVID tend to be adolescents, with females more commonly affected than males. A post-viral autoimmune injury is a probable cause of long COVID syndrome. Nurses need to consider that while physical symptoms are likely foremost, feelings of stress, anxiety, anger, and depression among children and adolescents are also present. Background: This is the largest study in North America investigating olfactory outcomes after pituitary surgery to date. Objective: Characterize factors associated with subjective olfactory dysfunction (OD) and worsened sinonasal quality-of-life (QOL) after endoscopic TSA. Methods: Patients undergoing primary TSA for secreting and non-secreting pituitary adenomas between 2017 and 2021 with pre- and post-operative SNOT-22 scores were included. Subjective OD was determined by the smell/taste dysfunction question on the SNOT-22 (smell-SNOT). Results: 159 patients with pre- and post-operative SNOT-22 scores were included. Average total SNOT-22 scores worsened from pre-operative (16.91 ± 16.91) to POM1 (25.15 ± 20.83, P <.001), with no difference from pre-operative (16.40 ± 15.88) to POM6 (16.27 ± 17.92, P =.936) or pre-operative (13.63 ± 13.54) to POM12 (12.60 ± 16.45, P =.651). Average smell-SNOT scores worsened from pre-operative (0.40 ± 1.27) to POM1 (2.09 ± 2.01, P <.001), and pre-operative (0.46 ± 1.29) to POM6 (1.13 ± 2.45, P =.002), with no difference from pre-operative (0.40 ± 1.07) to POM12 (0.71 ± 1.32, P =.100). Female gender had a 0.9-point (95% CI 0.1 to 1.6) P =.021, increase in smell-SNOT at POM1, resolving by POM6 (0.1 [−0.9 to 1.1], P =.800) and POM12 (0.0 [−1.0 to 0.9], P =.942). Septoplasty with tunnel approach had a 1.1 [0.2 to 2.0] out of 5-point (P =.023) increase in smell-SNOT at POM1, resolving by POM6 (0.2 [−1.1 to 1.6], P =.764) and POM12 (0.4 [−0.9 to 1.6], P =.567). Introduction: Death due to covid‐19 is one of the biggest health challenges in the world. There are many models that can predict death due to COVID‐19. This study aimed to fit and compare Decision Tree (DT), Support Vector Machine (SVM), and AdaBoost models to predict death due to COVID‐19. Methods: To describe the variables, mean (SD) and frequency (%) were reported. To determine the relationship between the variables and the death caused by COVID‐19, chi‐square test was performed with a significance level of 0.05. To compare DT, SVM and AdaBoost models for predicting death due to COVID‐19 from sensitivity, specificity, accuracy and the area under the rock curve under R software using psych, caTools, random over‐sampling examples, rpart, rpartplot packages was done. Results: Out of the total of 23,054 patients studied, 10,935 cases (46.5%) were women, and 12,569 cases (53.5%) were men. Additionally, the mean age of the patients was 54.9 ± 21.0 years. There is a statistically significant relationship between gender, fever, cough, muscle pain, smell and taste, abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia, dizziness, chest pain, intubation, cancer, diabetes, chronic blood disease, Violation of immunity, pregnancy, Dialysis, chronic lung disease with the death of covid‐19 patients showed (p < 0.05). The results showed that the sensitivity, specificity, accuracy and the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve were respectively 0.60, 0.68, 0.71, and 0.75 in the DT model, 0.54, 0.62, 0.63, and 0.71 in the SVM model, and 0.59, 0.65, 0.69 and 0.74 in the AdaBoost model. Conclusion: The results showed that DT had a high predictive power compared to other data mining models. Therefore, it is suggested to researchers in different fields to use DT to predict the studied variables. Dental caries is a highly prevalent oral disease affecting billions of individuals globally. The disease occurs chemically as a result of breakdown of the tooth surface attributed to metabolic activity in colonizing biofilm. Biofilms, composed of exopolysaccharides and proteins, protect bacteria like Streptococcus mutans, which is notable for its role in tooth decay due to its acid-producing abilities. While various antimicrobial agents may prevent biofilm formation, these drugs often produce side effects including enamel erosion and taste disturbances. This study aimed to examine utilization of the Mentha piperita essential oil as a potential antibiofilm activity agent against S. mutans. M. piperita oil significantly (1) reduced bacterial biofilm, (2) exhibited a synergistic effect when combined with chlorhexidine, and (3) did not induce cell toxicity. Chemical analysis identified the essential oil with 99.99% certainty, revealing menthol and menthone as the primary components, constituting approximately 42% and 26%, respectively. Further, M. piperita oil eradicated preformed biofilms and inhibited biofilm formation at sub-inhibitory concentrations. M. piperita oil also interfered with bacterial quorum sensing communication and did not produce any apparent cell toxicity in immortalized human keratinocytes (HaCaT). M. piperita represented an alternative substance for combating S. mutans and biofilm formation and a potential combination option with chlorhexidine to minimize side effects. Abstract Objective This cross‐sectional study aimed to determine the epidemiology of olfactory and gustatory dysfunctions related to COVID‐19 in China. Methods This study was conducted by 45 tertiary Grade‐A hospitals in China. Online and offline questionnaire data were obtained from patients infected with COVID‐19 between December 28, 2022, and February 21, 2023. The collected information included basic demographics, medical history, smoking and drinking history, vaccination history, changes in olfactory and gustatory functions before and after infection, and other postinfection symptoms, as well as the duration and improvement status of olfactory and gustatory disorders. Results Complete questionnaires were obtained from 35,566 subjects. The overall incidence of olfactory and taste dysfunction was 67.75%. Being female or being a cigarette smoker increased the likelihood of developing olfactory and taste dysfunction. Having received four doses of the vaccine or having good oral health or being a alcohol drinker decreased the risk of such dysfunction. Before infection, the average olfactory and taste VAS scores were 8.41 and 8.51, respectively; after infection, they decreased to 3.69 and 4.29 and recovered to 5.83 and 6.55 by the time of the survey. The median duration of dysosmia and dysgeusia was 15 and 12 days, respectively, with 0.5% of patients having symptoms lasting for more than 28 days. The overall self‐reported improvement rate was 59.16%. Recovery was higher in males, never smokers, those who received two or three vaccine doses, and those that had never experienced dental health issues, or chronic accompanying symptoms. Conclusions The incidence of dysosmia and dysgeusia following infection with the SARS‐CoV‐2 virus is high in China. Incidence and prognosis are influenced by several factors, including sex, SARS‐CoV‐2 vaccination, history of head‐facial trauma, nasal and oral health status, smoking and drinking history, and the persistence of accompanying symptoms.

Abstract Background Non-motor symptoms in myasthenia gravis (MG) are rarely confirmed. Although there are some small cohort studies, a large-systemic survey has not yet been performed. Methods We investigated the incidence and clinical characteristics of patients with MG who had taste disorders and alopecia using data of 1710 patients with MG enrolled in the Japan MG Registry 2021. Results Among them, 104 (6.1%) out of 1692 patients and 138 (8.2%) out of 1688 patients had histories of taste disorders and alopecia, respectively. Among the patients with MG, taste disorders were significantly more common in women, those with severe symptoms, refractory MG, or thymoma-associated MG, and were less common in those with ocular MG. The taste disorders often occurred after the onset of MG and often responded to MG treatments. Alopecia was more common in MG patients with a history of bulbar palsy and thymoma, and it often occurred before the onset of MG and sometimes responded to MG treatments. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed taste disturbance was associated with worst quantitative MG score and thymoma-associated MG; and alopecia was associated with thymoma-associated MG. Conclusion Clinicians should be aware of the non-motor symptoms in MG, especially in patients with severe myasthenic symptoms and thymoma-associated MG.

Background: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), a global public health crisis, continues to pose challenges despite preventive measures. The daily rise in COVID-19 cases is concerning, and the testing process is both time-consuming and costly. While several models have been created to predict mortality in COVID-19 patients, only a few have shown sufficient accuracy. Machine learning algorithms offer a promising approach to data-driven prediction of clinical outcomes, surpassing traditional statistical modeling. Leveraging machine learning (ML) algorithms could potentially provide a solution for predicting mortality in hospitalized COVID-19 patients in Ethiopia. Therefore, the aim of this study is to develop and validate machine-learning models for accurately predicting mortality in COVID-19 hospitalized patients in Ethiopia. Methods: Our study involved analyzing electronic medical records of COVID-19 patients who were admitted to public hospitals in Ethiopia. Specifically, we developed seven different machine learning models to predict COVID-19 patient mortality. These models included J48 decision tree, random forest (RF), k-nearest neighborhood (k-NN), multi-layer perceptron (MLP), Naïve Bayes (NB), eXtreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), and logistic regression (LR). We then compared the performance of these models using data from a cohort of 696 patients through statistical analysis. To evaluate the effectiveness of the models, we utilized metrics derived from the confusion matrix such as sensitivity, specificity, precision, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC). Results: The study included a total of 696 patients, with a higher number of females (440 patients, accounting for 63.2%) compared to males. The median age of the participants was 35.0 years old, with an interquartile range of 18–79. After conducting different feature selection procedures, 23 features were examined, and identified as predictors of mortality, and it was determined that gender, Intensive care unit (ICU) admission, and alcohol drinking/addiction were the top three predictors of COVID-19 mortality. On the other hand, loss of smell, loss of taste, and hypertension were identified as the three lowest predictors of COVID-19 mortality. The experimental results revealed that the k-nearest neighbor (k-NN) algorithm outperformed than other machine learning algorithms, achieving an accuracy of 95.25%, sensitivity of 95.30%, precision of 92.7%, specificity of 93.30%, F1 score 93.98% and a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) score of 96.90%. These findings highlight the effectiveness of the k-NN algorithm in predicting COVID-19 outcomes based on the selected features. Conclusion: Our study has developed an innovative model that utilizes hospital data to accurately predict the mortality risk of COVID-19 patients. The main objective of this model is to prioritize early treatment for high-risk patients and optimize strained healthcare systems during the ongoing pandemic. By integrating machine learning with comprehensive hospital databases, our model effectively classifies patients' mortality risk, enabling targeted medical interventions and improved resource management. Among the various methods tested, the K-nearest neighbors (KNN) algorithm demonstrated the highest accuracy, allowing for early identification of high-risk patients. Through KNN feature identification, we identified 23 predictors that significantly contribute to predicting COVID-19 mortality. The top five predictors are gender (female), intensive care unit (ICU) admission, alcohol drinking, smoking, and symptoms of headache and chills. This advancement holds great promise in enhancing healthcare outcomes and decision-making during the pandemic. By providing services and prioritizing patients based on the identified predictors, healthcare facilities and providers can improve the chances of survival for individuals. Taste disorders (TDs) are common among systemically treated cancer patients and negatively impact their nutritional status and quality of life. The novel food approved by the European Commission (EFSA), dried miracle berries (DMB), contains the natural taste-modifying protein miraculin. DMB, also available as a supplement, has emerged as a possible alternative treatment for TDs. The present study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of habitual DMB consumption in malnourished cancer patients undergoing active treatment. An exploratory clinical trial was carried out in which 31 cancer patients were randomized into three arms [standard dose of DMB (150 mg DMB/tablet), high dose of DMB (300 mg DMB/tablet) or placebo (300 mg freeze-dried strawberry)] for three months. Patients consumed a DMB tablet or placebo daily before each main meal (breakfast, lunch, and dinner). Throughout the five main visits, electrochemical taste perception, nutritional status, dietary intake, quality of life and the fatty acid profile of erythrocytes were evaluated. Patients consuming a standard dose of DMB exhibited improved taste acuity over time (% change right/left side: −52.8 ± 38.5/−58.7 ± 69.2%) and salty taste perception (2.29 ± 1.25 vs. high dose: 2.17 ± 1.84 vs. placebo: 1.57 ± 1.51 points, p < 0.05). They also had higher energy intake (p = 0.075) and covered better energy expenditure (107 ± 19%). The quality of life evaluated by symptom scales improved in patients receiving the standard dose of DMB (constipation, p = 0.048). The levels of arachidonic (13.1 ± 1.8; 14.0 ± 2.8, 12.0 ± 2.0%; p = 0.004) and docosahexaenoic (4.4 ± 1.7; 4.1 ± 1.0; 3.9 ± 1.6%; p = 0.014) acids in erythrocytes increased over time after DMB intake. The standard dose of DMB increased fat-free mass vs. placebo (47.4 ± 9.3 vs. 44.1 ± 4.7 kg, p = 0.007). Importantly, habitual patients with DMB did not experience any adverse events, and metabolic parameters remained stable and within normal ranges. In conclusion, habitual consumption of a standard 150 mg dose of DMB improves electrochemical food perception, nutritional status (energy intake, fat quantity and quality, fat-free mass), and quality of life in malnourished cancer patients receiving antineoplastic treatment. Snoezelen Multisensory Stimulation (SMSS) is a non‐pharmacological intervention that provides controlled multisensorial environments to stimulate the primary senses: sight, hearing, smell, touch, taste, proprioceptive and vestibular. Even though the use and potential of SMSS have been widespread in the literature regarding certain target populations (autism, developmental disabilities) and settings (e.g. leisure, therapeutic), its effectiveness in older adults with neurocognitive disorders (e.g. dementia, mild cognitive impairment) and other pathologies (e.g. psychiatric disorders, oncological diseases) is still unclear. Therefore, a systematic review of the literature was conducted to address this issue. The recommendations of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐Analyses (PRISMA) and of the Cochrane Collaboration were followed. An initial search on PubMed and Scopus databases resulted in 86 articles of which 14 met inclusion criteria and were reviewed in detail. The outcomes showed that most of the studies (n = 13) focused on the effects of SMSS on behaviour and mood in older adults with major cognitive disorders (i.e. dementia). Although there is scarce literature on its impact on cognition, psychophysiological measures (e.g. heart rate, oxygen saturation), daily living functionality and quality of life, this type of intervention seems to contribute to delaying the worsening in severity of the neurocognitive disorders from the mildest to the most severe stages. Likewise, it is legitimate to consider the possibility of potential benefits to older adults with less severe neurocognitive disorders or other pathologies, but more research is needed. A preserved sense of smell and taste allows us to understand many environmental "messages" and results in meaningfully improvements to quality of life. With the COVID-19 pandemic, it became clear how important these senses are for social and nutritional status and catapulted this niche chemosensory research area towards widespread interest. In the current exploratory work, we assessed two groups of post-COVID-19 patients who reported having had (Group 1) or not (Group 2) a smell/taste impairment at the disease onset. The aim was to compare them using validated smell and taste tests as well as with brain magnetic resonance imaging volumetric analysis. Normative data were used for smell scores comparison and a pool of healthy subjects, recruited before the pandemic, served as controls for taste scores. The majority of patients in both groups showed an olfactory impairment, which was more severe in Group 1 (median UPSIT scores: 24.5 Group 1 vs 31.0 Group 2, p = 0.008), particularly among women (p = 0.014). No significant differences emerged comparing taste scores between Group 1 and Group 2, but dysgeusia was only present in Group 1 patients. However, for taste scores, a significant difference was found between Group 1 and controls (p = 0.005). No MRI anatomical abnormalities emerged in any patients while brain volumetric analysis suggested a significant difference among groups for the right caudate nucleus (p = 0.028), although this was not retained following Benjamini–Hochberg correction. Background: There is no consistent framework for patient-centric drug product design, despite the common understanding that drug product acceptability and preferences influence adherence and, therefore, drug product effectiveness. The aim of this review was to assess current understanding of patient acceptability and preferences for solid oral dosage form (SODF) drug product attributes, and the potential impact of these attributes on patient behaviors and outcomes. Patients and Methods: A scoping review was conducted. Embase, Ovid MEDLINE®, and PubMed® were searched for full-text articles published between January 2013 and May 2023. Following screening and assessment against predefined inclusion criteria, data were analyzed thematically. Results: Nineteen studies were included. Four overarching domains of drug product attributes were identified and summarized in a framework: appearance, swallowability, palatability, and handling. Each domain was informed by specific drug product attributes: texture, form, size, shape, color, marking, taste, mouthfeel, and smell. The most frequently studied domains were swallowability and appearance, while the most studied attributes were size, shape, and texture. Smell, marking, and mouthfeel were the least studied attributes. Texture intersected all domains, while form, shape, and size intersected appearance, swallowability, and handling. Swallowability and size appeared to be the key domain and attribute, respectively, to consider when designing drug products. Few studies explored the impact of drug product attributes on behaviors and outcomes. Conclusion: While existing studies of drug product attributes have focused on appearance and swallowability, this review highlighted the importance of two less well-understood domains—palatability and handling—in understanding patients' acceptability and preferences for SODF drug products. The framework provides a tool to facilitate patient-centric design of drug products, organizing and categorizing physical drug product attributes into four overarching domains (appearance, swallowability, palatability, and handling), encouraging researchers to comprehensively assess the impact of drug product attributes on patient acceptability, preferences, and outcomes. However, patients are rarely involved in designing the medicines that they take. In this study, researchers summarized 19 studies published between 2013 and 2023. They wanted to understand how different factors, like size and shape, affect patients' preferences, ability, and willingness to take medicines. Researchers focused on the "physical" aspects of medicines and found 4 common themes: 1) what they look like (appearance), 2) how easy they are to swallow (swallowability), 3) how they taste and feel in the mouth (palatability), and 4) how easy they are to handle (handling). Eight factors were also found: color, markings, shape, size, smell, taste, texture, and how a medicine feels in the mouth (mouthfeel). Most studies focused on what medicines look like and how easy they are to swallow. The factors that researchers mostly looked at were the size, shape, and texture of medicines. The design of medicines can impact patients of different ages, though there may be specific needs for certain groups of patients, including children, older adults, and people with certain diseases. Background: Understanding how symptoms are associated with SARS‐CoV‐2 culture positivity is important for isolation and transmission control guidelines. Methods: Individuals acutely infected with SARS‐CoV‐2 in Tennessee and their household contacts were recruited into a prospective study. All participants self‐collected nasal swabs daily for 14 days and completed symptom diaries from the day of illness onset through day 14 postenrollment. Nasal specimens were tested for SARS‐CoV‐2 using RT‐qPCR. Positive specimens with cycle threshold values < 40 were sent to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for viral culture. First, we modeled the association between symptoms and the risk of culture positivity using an age‐adjusted generalized additive model (GAM) accounting for repeated measurements within participants and a symptom‐day spline. Next, we investigated how timing of symptom resolution was associated with the timing of culture resolution. Results: In a GAM restricted to follow‐up days after symptoms began, the odds of a specimen being culture positive was significantly increased on days when wheezing, loss of taste or smell, runny nose, nasal congestion, sore throat, fever, or any symptom were reported. For all symptoms except sore throat, it was more common for participants to have culture resolution before symptom resolution than for culture to resolve after or on the same day as symptom resolution. Conclusions: Overall, symptomatic individuals were more likely to be SARS‐CoV‐2 viral culture positive. For most symptoms, culture positivity was more likely to end before symptoms resolved. Recently, smell and taste disorders have seen renewed interest, as these symptoms are frequent complications of SARS-CoV-2 infection, since approximately 60% of patients affected by COVID-19 have shown olfactory and gustatory alterations. Otolaryngology pays attention to taste and smell abnormalities (TSAs), especially when associated with oncology. TSAs are common symptoms in people affected by cancer, yet they are ignored and underestimated. The clinical outcome of TSAs in cancer evidences the importance of identifying them with chemotherapy or radiotherapy in general, and they are associated with many types of cancer. We recognize the findings of the literature on TSAs in cancer, evaluating how it is important to consider and identify these disorders concerning reduced food enjoyment or inappropriate nutrient intake, and modulating the nutritional status, quality of life, and impact of therapy. Despite the fact that the global COVID-19 pandemic has officially ended, we continue to feel its effects and discover new correlations between SARS-CoV-2 infection and changes in the organism that have occurred in patients. It has been shown that the disease can be associated with a variety of complications, including disorders of the nervous system such as a characteristic loss of smell and taste, as well as less commonly reported incidents such as cranial polyneuropathy or neuromuscular disorders. Nervous system diseases that are suspected to be related to COVID-19 include Guillain–Barré syndrome, which is frequently caused by viruses. During the course of the disease, autoimmunity destroys peripheral nerves, which despite its rare occurrence, can lead to serious consequences, such as symmetrical muscle weakness and deep reflexes, or even their complete abolition. Since the beginning of the pandemic, case reports suggesting a relationship between these two disease entities have been published, and in some countries, the increasing number of Guillain–Barré syndrome cases have also been reported. This suggests that previous contact with SARS-CoV-2 may have had an impact on their occurrence. This article is a review and summary of the literature that raises awareness of the neurological symptoms' prevalence, including Guillain–Barré syndrome, which may be impacted by the commonly occurring COVID-19 disease or vaccination against it. Background: Olfactory and gustatory disorders are common problems encountered during the COVID-19 pandemic with a significant impact on the patient's quality of life: The aim of this study was to assess the olfactory and gustatory functions in COVID-19 patients with correlation between them and clinical and laboratory markers. This was a cross-sectional study conducted on 63 subjects recruited from the COVID-19 clinics at Police Authority and Menoufia University hospitals. The patients were assessed using history taking, anterior rhinoscopy, endoscopic examination, computed tomography, and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test. Olfactory functions were assessed using the alcohol threshold test. Gustatory functions were assessed using the three-drop method. The olfactory and gustatory functions were correlated with age, gender, and laboratory parameters. Also, the recovery of smell and taste disorders was correlated with our assessed laboratory markers. Results: The prevalence of olfactory dysfunction among study participants was 41 patients (65%) of the participants including 12 patients (19.1%) having mild hyposmia, 10 patients (15.8%) having moderate hyposmia, 9 patients (14.3%) having severe hyposmia, and 10 patients (15.8%) having complete anosmia. The prevalence of gustatory dysfunction among study participants was 24 patients (38.1%). Age, gender, and laboratory parameters did not show any statistically significant difference between those who experienced olfactory dysfunction or gustatory dysfunction and those who did not. However, there was a significant positive correlation between the total leucocytic count, serum level of CRP, and serum level of D-dimer and the degree of olfactory dysfunction (0.049, 0.03, and 0.02, respectively). There was a nonsignificant correlation between recovery of olfactory and gustatory dysfunction and laboratory markers. Conclusion: Olfactory and gustatory dysfunction are established clinical presentations among COVID-19-positive patients. The laboratory markers had no correlation with the incidence of these dysfunctions or their recovery. INTRODUCTION Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is a worldwide infection characterized by various symptoms. Few studies have examined its oral manifestations. However, there is insufficient information on the oral manifestations of patients with COVID-19 who use tobacco products. Therefore, this cross-sectional study investigated oral symptoms of tobacco-using patients with mild-to-moderate COVID-19. METHODS This study used a convenience sample of non-hospitalized patients (aged ≥18 years) with mild-to-moderate COVID-19 diagnosed by polymerized chain reaction (PCR). This study excluded pregnant or lactating women or patients with serious COVID-19 complications, including those who required hospitalization or were on specific medications (antiviral, corticosteroid, antimicrobial, or immunosuppressive). Oral examinations were performed, including labial, buccal, and gingival mucosa, tongue, floor of the mouth, and palate, for any newly developed lesions associated with the onset of COVID-19. The salivary flow was determined using the passive drool collection technique. RESULTS Lip dryness, gingivitis, tongue lesions, and taste loss were the most commonly reported oral symptoms in patients with mild-to-moderate COVID-19. The most common general symptoms were tiredness and headache (63.9%), followed by dry cough, myalgia, sore throat, and fever. This study found 139 occurrences of oral symptoms, of which 52 were dry lips (27 tobacco non-users, and 25 tobacco users), and 11 were gingivitis (five non-users, and six tobacco users), and 12 tongue changes (eight non-users, and four tobacco users). Ageusia, or loss of taste sensation, was most commonly reported with or without other oral COVID-19 symptoms (55 occurrences: 36 non-users and 19 tobacco users). No significant differences were found in oral symptoms between tobacco non-users and tobacco users. CONCLUSIONS There is a need to expand the routine examination protocol for patients during future respiratory pandemics, as monitoring oral health allows dentists to improve the management of oral sequelae during a pandemic. Simple Summary: Cancer cachexia (CC) is a complex syndrome requiring a multimodal approach. Although a universally accepted definition and staging criteria for cancer cachexia remains elusive, there is general consensus regarding the importance of elements such as weight loss, muscle wasting, and poor appetite. Epidemic trends of obesity and overlapping conditions such as sarcopenia and frailty further complicate CC definition, staging, and relevant outcome measures. Despite progress in understanding the molecular mechanisms of CC, there is no single, consistently effective pharmacotherapy for CC and, unsurprisingly, there are variations among guidelines regarding management. Current pharmacologic research is focused on promising targeted treatments; however, a multimodal approach is likely to be more effective than any single therapeutic agent. This narrative review provides an update on non-pharmacologic and pharmacologic treatment and proposes a theoretical model for management of CC, which includes a multimodal therapeutic approach directed at the various mechanisms contributing to CC. Despite a better understanding of the mechanisms causing cancer cachexia (CC) and development of promising pharmacologic and supportive care interventions, CC persists as an underdiagnosed and undertreated condition. CC contributes to fatigue, poor quality of life, functional impairment, increases treatment related toxicity, and reduces survival. The core elements of CC such as weight loss and poor appetite should be identified early. Currently, addressing contributing conditions (hypothyroidism, hypogonadism, and adrenal insufficiency), managing nutrition impact symptoms leading to decreased oral intake (nausea, constipation, dysgeusia, stomatitis, mucositis, pain, fatigue, depressed mood, or anxiety), and the addition of pharmacologic agents when appropriate (progesterone analog, corticosteroids, and olanzapine) is recommended. In Japan, the clinical practice has changed based on the availability of Anamorelin, a ghrelin receptor agonist that improved lean body mass, weight, and appetite-related quality of life (QoL) compared to a placebo, in phase III trials. Other promising therapeutic agents currently in trials include Espindolol, a non-selective β blocker and a monoclonal antibody to GDF-15. In the future, a single therapeutic agent or perhaps multiple medications targeting the various mechanisms of CC may prove to be an effective strategy. Purpose: To evaluate the alterations in the psycho-physical tests, contrast sensitivity (CS) and hue discrimination (total estimation score, TES) in COVID-19 patients. Methods: A prospective case-control study was undertaken in 2021-22 to look at CS and TES among COVID-19 patients and RT-PCR negative normal subjects by a mobile app "smart optometry" and X-Rite's free online version of Farnsworth-Munsell 100 hue test. Strict visual acuity (minimum of 6/9 equivalent on Snellen) and other clinical parameters were used as exclusion criteria to filter potentially confounding pre-receptoral co-morbid conditions. The effect of mismatch in recruiting age and sex matched controls during the pandemic were analyzed by multivariate linear regression. Result: One-way ANOVA ruled out any influence of gender on CS and TES; however, there was significant difference in the TES on Mann Whitney U test (TES- 2.95 +/- 3.8 for cases; 0.30 +/- 1.1 for controls; p <0.001) and it persisted after accounting for age. Six controls with breakthrough infections had a significant deterioration in TES (Mean scores -3.0; 95% CI = -5.89 to -0.11; p = 0.04) on paired t test. Qualitative analysis showed that S-cone mediated deficiencies outnumber those affecting M-L cone mediated deficiencies. Among 53 subjects exhibiting three sensory features, anosmia, loss of taste and dyschromatopsia, nine (16.98%) had all features concurrently. Conclusion: The study demonstrates that COVID-19 infection leads to altered TES representing dyschromatopsia -an ocular counterpart of anosmia, with little difference on CS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To investigate the clinical characteristics associated with measured gustatory dysfunction in patients with chemosensory (smell and taste) discomfort. Study design: Retrospective study. Design: Hospital‐based cohort. Setting: The clinical characteristics associated with the measured diagnosis of gustatory dysfunction were statistically analysed. Participants: Patients who underwent all the psychophysical olfactory and chemical gustatory function tests (YSK olfactory function test and chemical gustometry exam) and the subjective questionnaires between October 2021 and February 2023. Main outcome measures: YSK olfactory function test and chemical gustometry results, subjective questionnaire score about chemosensory (smell and taste) functions. Results: A total of 219 patients were enrolled; 180 were diagnosed as having normal gustatory function, and 39 were diagnosed as having gustatory dysfunction. Subjective recognition of gustatory function was not associated with the measured gustatory function. Age, sex, measured olfactory function and the threshold and discrimination scores for the olfactory function test were significant factors in the multivariate analysis. When the patients were further divided according to age, the threshold test scores rather than other subsets in the olfactory function test were significantly associated with measured gustatory dysfunction in patients 60 and older. Background: Symptoms after novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) recovery by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 strains are unspecified. Methods: This self-administered questionnaire-based study was conducted to investigate symptoms after COVID-19 recovery at one of the main hospitals for COVID-19 treatment in Hiroshima, Japan, from September 2020 to March 2022 for patients who visited follow-up consultations after COVID-19. Study subjects were divided into four groups (Wild-type, Alpha, Delta, and Omicron periods) according to COVID-19 onset date. Hierarchical cluster analysis was performed to determine symptom clusters and investigate risk factors for each symptom cluster using multivariate analysis. Results: Among 385 patients who enrolled in this study, 249 patients had any persistent symptoms at a median of 23.5 (interquartile range, 20-31) days after COVID-19 onset. Among patients with any persistent symptoms, symptom clusters including olfactory or taste disorders, respiratory symptoms, and cardiac symptoms were found. Respiratory symptoms were more frequent among patients infected in the Omicron period compared to the Wild-type period (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] 3.13; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.31-7.48). Compared to patients who recovered from mild COVID-19, patients who needed oxygen or ventilation support suffered fewer post-COVID-19 respiratory symptoms (AOR 0.46; 95% CI, 0.22-0.97) but more post-COVID-19 cardiac symptoms among them (AOR 2.67; 95% CI, 1.26-5.65). Olfactory or taste disorders were fewer among patients infected in the Omicron period compared to the Wild-type period (AOR 0.14; 95% CI, 0.04-0.46). Background: Anosmia and dysgeusia are symptoms associated with COVID-19 infection following the announcement of the disease as a pandemic. Moreover, there is no effective treatment for the disease. Garlic is a well-known herb with antimicrobial and antiviral properties. This study evaluates the potential therapeutic effect of garlic consumption on reducing the recovery time from anosmia and dysgeusia symptoms among participants with COVID-19. Methods: 388 Jordanian participants with COVID-19 infection were enrolled in an online computer-assisted web survey during the period from 20th September 2021 to 20th January 2022. The survey consisted of three constructs; socio-demographic profile, symptoms associated with COVID-19, and frequency of garlic and onion consumption used during the infection. Results: The results of this study showed that almost half of the participants were between 20-40 (193, 49.7%); most of them complained about fever, fatigue, anosmia, and dysgeusia and used onion (20, 93%) and garlic (29, 23%) to alleviate symptoms of the disease. In total, 40.7% of garlic-using participants recovered from anosmia within the first 11-15 days, whereas 35.3% recovered between 6-10 days. Results also revealed that there was no correlation between garlic consumption and recovery from dysgeusia. Hence, there was a weak inverse association between garlic consumption and recovery time from anosmia. Conclusion: The authors concluded that consumption of garlic will enhance immune system during the fight against COVID-19.
