Schizophrenia (SCH) is a major mental illness that causes impaired cognitive function and long-term disability, so the requirements for reliable biomarkers for early diagnosis and therapy of SCH are essential. The objective of this work was an untargeted lipidomic study of serum samples from a Serbian cohort including 30 schizophrenia (SCH) patients and 31 non-psychiatric control (C) individuals by applying liquid chromatography (LC) coupled with high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) and chemometric analyses. Principal component analysis (PCA) of all samples indicated no clear separation between SCH and C groups but indicated clear gender separation in the C group. Multivariate statistical analyses (PCA and orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA)) of gender-differentiated SCH and C groups established forty-nine differential lipids in the differentiation of male SCH (SCH-M) patients and male controls (C-M), while sixty putative biomarkers were identified in the differentiation of female SCH patients (SCH-F) and female controls (C-F). Lipidomic study of gender-differentiated groups, between SCH-M and C-M and between SCH-F and C-F groups, confirmed that lipids metabolism was altered and the content of the majority of the most affected lipid classes, glycerophospholipids (GP), sphingolipids (SP), glycerolipids (GL) and fatty acids (FA), was decreased compared to controls. From differential lipid metabolites with higher content in both SCH-M and SCH-F patients groups compared to their non-psychiatric controls, there were four common lipid molecules: ceramides Cer 34:2, and Cer 34:1, lysophosphatidylcholine LPC 16:0 and triacylglycerol TG 48:2. Cancer is a complex disease that can also affect the younger population; however, it is responsible for a relatively high mortality rate of children and youth, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Besides that, lipidomic studies in this age range are scarce. Therefore, we analyzed blood serum samples from young patients (12 to 35 years) with bone sarcoma (osteosarcoma) and compared their lipidomics to the ones from the control group of samples, named healthy control (HC group), using NMR and LC-MS techniques. Furthermore, differences in the lipidomic profiles between OS patients with and without metastasis indicate higher glycerophosphocholine (GPC) and glycerophospholipid (GPL) levels in osteosarcoma and increased cholesterol, choline, polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), and glycerols during the metastasis. To maximize the reuse of citrus fruit processing waste, which is generated in large amounts due to juice production, this work shows the results of a new renewable approach for the extraction of high‐added‐value compounds present in orange biomass, specifically in orange peels (OP). The method is based on the use of diluted Ca2+, acid, and base solutions for the extraction of hesperidin (HSD), pectin, lignin, and cellulose sequentially, without generating any organic solid waste at the end, and without the need for air drying the starting biomass. Good yields of hesperidin were recovered (~1.56%), with excellent purity (up to 95%), as well as lignin (yield ~2.2%) and cellulose (yield ~12%). Pectin obtained by this process showed a high amount of galacturonic acid (~88%) and a low degree of methylation (~16%). All products were thoroughly characterized by applying Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and solid‐state cross‐polarization/magic angle spinning carbon‐13 nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (CP/MAS 13C‐NMR). Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis is a gram-positive bacterium and is the etiologic agent of caseous lymphadenitis (CL) in small ruminants. This disease is characterized by the development of encapsulated granulomas in visceral and superficial lymph nodes, and its clinical treatment is refractory to antibiotic therapy. An important virulence factor of the Corynebacterium genus is the ability to produce biofilm; however, little is known about the characteristics of the biofilm produced by C. pseudotuberculosis and its resistance to antimicrobials. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are considered as promising antimicrobial agents, and are known to have several advantages, such as a broad-spectrum activity, low resistance induction potential, and antibiofilm activity. Therefore, we evaluate herein the activity of AgNPs in C. pseudotuberculosis, through the determination of minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC), antibiofilm activity, and visualization of AgNP-treated and AgNP-untreated biofilm through scanning electron microscopy. The AgNPs were able to completely inhibit bacterial growth and inactivate C. pseudotuberculosis at concentrations ranging from 0.08 to 0.312 mg/mL. The AgNPs reduced the formation of biofilm in reference strains and clinical isolates of C. pseudotuberculosis, with interference values greater than 80% at a concentration of 4 mg/mL, controlling the change between the planktonic and biofilm-associated forms, and preventing fixation and colonization. Scanning electron microscopy images showed a significant disruptive activity of AgNP on the consolidated biofilms.
