Supervised machine learning is widely used in biology and deserves more scrutiny. We present a set of community-wide recommendations (DOME) aiming to help establish standards of supervised machine learning validation in biology. Formulated as questions, the DOME recommendations improve the assessment and reproducibility of papers when included as supplementary material. La caratterizzazione della tossicità potenziale dei sedimenti degli invasi è un'informazione essenziale per programmare adeguatamente le operazioni che implicano il rilascio a valle del materiale depositato e garantire così la funzionalità delle opere di presa delle dighe e il ripristino della capacità utile. È infatti necessario garantire la tutela delle comunità acquatiche nei tratti fluviali a valle, ai sensi della Direttiva Europea sulle Acque 2000/60/EC. Oltre a minimizzare l'impatto fisico, è necessario valutare anche il potenziale effetto ecotossicologico determinato dalla presenza di microinquinanti nei sedimenti. In assenza di riferimenti normativi per i sedimenti d'acqua dolce, l'approccio più cautelativo è quello del peso dell'evidenza sperimentale basata sull'analisi chimica, ecotossicologica, ecologica e, in alcuni casi, anche attraverso la valutazione del bioaccumulo. In questo contributo viene mostrata la caratterizzazione dei sedimenti di un invaso lombardo ai fini della fluitazione secondo il "Protocollo per la caratterizzazione chimica ed ecotossicologica dei sedimenti degli invasi" (PrATo), in fase di sperimentazione.

Il saggio illustra l'interazione storicamente essenziale tra la città di Milano e le eccezionali prerogative idrogeologiche del sistema idrografico di cui si trova è al centro. Legame geografico, quella tra la città e le sue acque, ma soprattutto economico grazie a uno sviluppo agricolo che ha avuto nel sistema delle marcite la sua massima espressione produttiva, specialmente nel caso delle marcite irrigate e fertilizzate con le acque cloacali della roggia Vettabbia, il principale emissario cittadino. Di questo particolare sistema irriguo, come pure del sistema idrografico milanese in generale, viene ricostruito il progressivo degrado nel corso del XX secolo e la sua odierna riabilitazione.

Studies on recent climate trends from the Himalayan range are limited, and even completely absent at high elevation (> 5000 m a.s.l.). This study specifically explores the southern slopes of Mt. Everest, analyzing the time series of temperature and precipitation reconstructed from seven stations located between 2660 and 5600 m a.s.l. during 1994–2013, complemented with the data from all existing ground weather stations located on both sides of the mountain range (Koshi Basin) over the same period. Overall we find that the main and most significant increase in temperature is concentrated outside of the monsoon period. Above 5000 m a.s.l. the increasing trend in the time series of minimum temperature (+0.072 °C yr−1) is much stronger than of maximum temperature (+0.009 °C yr−1), while the mean temperature increased by +0.044 °C yr−1. Moreover, we note a substantial liquid precipitation weakening (−9.3 mm yr−1) during the monsoon season. The annual rate of decrease in precipitation at higher elevations is similar to the one at lower elevations on the southern side of the Koshi Basin, but the drier conditions of this remote environment make the fractional loss much more consistent (−47% during the monsoon period). Our results challenge the assumptions on whether temperature or precipitation is the main driver of recent glacier mass changes in the region. The main implications are the following: (1) the negative mass balances of glaciers observed in this region can be more ascribed to a decrease in accumulation (snowfall) than to an increase in surface melting; (2) the melting has only been favoured during winter and spring months and close to the glaciers terminus; (3) a decrease in the probability of snowfall (−10%) has made a significant impact only at glacier ablation zone, but the magnitude of this decrease is distinctly lower than the observed decrease in precipitation; (4) the decrease in accumulation could have caused the observed decrease in glacier flow velocity and the current stagnation of glacier termini, which in turn could have produced more melting under the debris glacier cover, leading to the formation of numerous supraglacial and proglacial lakes that have characterized the region in the last decades.

This paper presents a synthesis of the most important studies performed on the deep insubrian lakes (Maggiore, Lugano, Como, Iseo and Garda). Samples taken continuously over the last decades form the basis for a description of the trophic evolution of the lakes, inferred from concentrations of algal nutrients and dissolved oxygen. The results show an improvement in the condition of Lake Maggiore, currently approaching oligotrophy, and in that of lakes Como and Lugano, which are still nevertheless in an unacceptable eutrophic state. Lake Garda has been affected by an increase in mean P concentration since the 1970s, but it has stabilised in recent years. Also in Lake Iseo P concentration has not changed in the last twenty years, but the lake still remains in an eutrophic condition. Il presente capitolo descrive sinteticamente lo sta to della situazione, della quantità e della qualità , delle risorse idriche in Italia e fornisce una valu tazione dei maggiori impatti cui saranno soggette tali risorse. Si sofferma sulle principali fonti d' incertezza legate alle valutazioni di scenario, descrive i sistemi di approvvigionamento e gli indi catori utili a valutarli e fornisce un quadro delle principali criticità dei settori idroesigenti. Dopo aver descritto il sistema legislativo, istituziona le e di governance, pone attenzione su un elemento chiav e delle politiche di adattamento: la strategia cosiddetta del mainstreaming, ossia del veicolare l e misure di adattamento in modo integrato nelle politiche settoriali più pertinenti e già esistenti ; questo vale, ovviamente per quelle sulle risorse idriche, ma anche per quelle relative al rischio id rogeologico, e per quelle energetiche e agricole. D'altro canto, le misure di adattamento riguardanti le risorse idriche sono, in effetti, di volta in volta mirate a ridurre la vulnerabilità e/o la sens ibilità dell'apparato socio-economico, l'esposizione del sistema idrologico e/o incrementa rne la capacità adattativa. Nel capitolo sono poi illustrati alcuni esempi di g estione delle risorse idriche considerando possibili cambiamenti climatici e tipologie di misu re di adattamento, ed è descritta a scopo esemplificativo una proposta operativa di sistema d i supporto alle decisioni per l'adattamento ai cambiamenti climatici, utilizzabile via Web e basat a su un'analisi multi-criteri. Il capitolo si focalizza inoltre sulle complesse in terazioni esistenti tra i cambiamenti climatici e i fattori non direttamente dipendenti dal clima, in p articolare quelli socio-economici, che fanno sì che la valutazione degli impatti sia affetta da un' incertezza la cui entità può essere in alcuni casi molto elevata. Si evidenzia quindi il fatto che le strategie e le misure di adattamento non potranno che ispirarsi al principio precauzionale, nei limit i delle conoscenze disponibili, in un'ottica di minimizzazione dei rischi di un "cattivo adattament o" (maladaptation) e dei possibili effetti collaterali negativi, anche grazie all'adozione di accurate procedure di previsione del clima futuro. Allo stesso modo, è necessario che anche le politic he legate direttamente o indirettamente a quelle idriche siano valutate per la loro validità (o per lo meno neutralità) rispetto alle necessità di adattamento (climate proofing). Infine, si rileva, che anche se fino a oggi l'adatt amento ai cambiamenti climatici ha avuto una scarsa rilevanza e di conseguenza la ricerca specif ica è ancora poco sviluppata, esistono tuttavia una vastissima letteratura e un'adeguata dotazione di mezzi applicativi che possono essere utilizzati quale riferimento per l'identificazione di misure di adattamento, rifacendosi ai principi della gestione integrata delle risorse idriche, che richiedono solamente di essere rivisti in un'ottic a dinamica, basata su analisi di scenario e con una p articolare attenzione alla gestione dell'incertezza.

The internal wave-field of a Y-shaped lake (Lake Como, North Italy) was investigated over a 3-year long period applying wavelet time-frequency analysis to temperature and wind data time series, recorded at the edge of each of the three arms. The comparison with the results from a modal model allowed to identify the presence of both first and second vertical modes of oscillations. The field data analysis underlined a heterogeneous baroclinic response with the eastern arm decoupled from the remaining part of the lake constituted by the northern and western arms (north-south west transect). This disjoined response is expected to enhance the water exchange between the northern and the western arm, with relevant consequences on the inter-basins water exchanges and on the distribution of chemical and biological species. In the north-south west transect the analysis of the low power signals in winter underlined a residual internal wave activity ascribed to the first vertical free mode of oscillation (V1H1).

Despite the huge increase in the number of quantitative modeller studies undertaken, little attention in the literature has been given to the communication process among modellers, the researchers and local stakeholders. However, such communication is necessary to ensure that this research effort becomes a useful tool in the decision-making process. The work described here is based on the systems paradigm, and combines scientific environmental analysis and ecosystem modeller (the hard-system approach) with soft-system participatory processes. The development of concept maps is the main tool of the methodology proposed here: combining soft and hard approaches, concept maps are first developed with the involvement of local people and local experts and then used to guide the design of quantitative models. This paper discusses how concept maps and quantitative models were developed to capture the complexity of social and ecological systems in a declarative, systems oriented and user-friendly manner, assisting stakeholders to increase the knowledge of problems and make decisions. Finally, advantages and disadvantages of the proposed methodology are discussed.
