BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Stroke is the second leading cause of mortality in the worldwide. After a stroke, many neurons in the ischemic penumbra will undergo apoptosis. The aim of this study was investigation of effects of iron oxide nanoparticles and magnetic field on apoptosis reduction after ischemic reperfusion in rat model. METHODS: In this experimental study, 50 male Wistar rats weighing 220-250g were randomly divided into five groups of 10 rats each: including control, sham (ischemic reperfusion model), ischemic reperfusion + iron oxide nanoparticles (10mg/kg), ischemic reperfusion +magnetic field (1 Tesla, 20 min in 4 days), and ischemic reperfusion + iron oxide nanoparticles and magnetic field groups. Injections were performed intraperitoneally. The American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) consensus statement (CS) provides guidelines for patient selection for accelerated partial breast irradiation (APBI) following breast conserving surgery. The purpose of this study was to evaluate recurrence rates based on ASTRO CS groupings. A single institution review of 238 early stage breast cancer patients treated with balloon-based APBI via balloon based brachytherapy demonstrated a 4-year actuarial ipsilateral breast tumor recurrence (IBTR) rate of 5.1%. There were no significant differences in the 4-year actuarial IBTR rates between the “suitable,” “cautionary,” and “unsuitable” ASTRO categories (0%, 7.2%, and 4.3%, resp.,P=0.28). ER negative tumors had higher rates of IBTR than ER positive tumors. The ASTRO groupings are poor predictors of patient outcomes. Further studies evaluating individual clinicopathologic features are needed to determine the safety of APBI in higher risk patients.

We reviewed our single-institution experience with APBI in patients considered “cautionary” by ASTRO to determine patterns of recurrence. An institutional review board-approved, retrospective chart review was conducted from January 2004 to November 2009. We identified 106 “cautionary” patients with 109 BC. The purpose of this case is to describe a patient who had a stroke preceding a chiropractic appointment and was unaware that the cerebrovascular event had occurred.An 85-year-old established patient presented for chiropractic treatment of pain in the left side of the neck, hip, and low back associated with known advanced degenerative spinal disease and lumbar stenosis. On the day of presentation, the patient reported morning nausea, double vision, and right-sided vision loss; she related that she had collided into a car while driving to the appointment. Review of her medical history divulged residual neurological deficits related to a previous subdural hematoma, resulting in craniotomy. Examination revealed a right inferior quadrantanopia in the right eye and right nasal hemianopia in the left eye. Nystagmus was present in the left eye with saccadic intrusion on pursuit right to left.The patient was transported immediately to an emergency room,where diagnosis of an Acute infarct in the left cerebrum at the junction of the left occipital, parietal and temporal lobes in the watershed area was confirmed.Patients with signs and symptoms of stroke in progress may occasionally present for chiropractic care. It is imperative to complete a thorough history and examination prior to care.

We report a case of a 13-year-old female dancer with spinous process apophysitis following repetitive microtrauma during end-range hyperextension movements. Following appropriate rest and limitation of hyperextension, she was able to return to her previous level of training. It is important to recognize that numerous diagnostic possibilities arise when presented with a young dancer with back pain. The intention of this case report is to compare and contrast the pertinent clinical and radiologic findings of spinous process apophysitis and its more common and debilitating mimic, spondylolysis. The correct diagnosis is paramount in cases of this sort due to the variable treatment requirements of each disorder.

Fe/TaO (x) /Co trilayers were grown on Si(100)/SiO2 substrates and on tantalum buffer layers by a high vacuum magnetron sputtering system. The effects of both Ta buffer layer and tantalum-oxide barrier layer thickness on the structural and magnetic properties and the coupling of the ferromagnetic layers have been studied. It was observed that Ta improves the structural properties of the Fe layer resulting in an increased coercive field. For a barrier thickness of 4 nm a weak decoupling starts to appear between the ferromagnetic layers and a clear step formation is observed with increasing thickness. The minor hysteresis loops predict an interlayer coupling for thin barriers. The annealing of trilayers up to 250A degrees C shows an increased coercivity for only the Fe layer. Annealing further at 400A degrees C has the opposite effect of decreasing the coercivity, indicating intermixing at the interfaces of the Fe. The refractive index of the insulator barrier shows that the barrier layer is not totally in the form of tantalum-pentoxide.
