Condensed Matter - Materials Science - Abstract
Germanium is a strong candidate as a laser source for silicon photonics. It is widely accepted that the band structure of germanium can be altered by tensile strain so as to reduce the energy difference between its direct and indirect band gaps. However, the conventional deformation potential model most widely adopted to describe this transformation happens to have been investigated only up to 1 % uniaxially loaded strains. In this work, we use a micro-bridge geometry to uniaxially stress germanium along [100] up to $\varepsilon_{100}$=3.3 % longitudinal strain and then perform electro-absorption spectroscopy. We accurately measure the energy gap between the conduction band at the $\Gamma$ point and the light- and heavy-hole valence bands. While the experimental results agree with the conventional linear deformation potential theory up to 2 % strain, a significantly nonlinear behavior is observed at higher strains. We measure the deformation potential of germanium to be a = -9.1 $\pm$ 0.3 eV and b = -2.32 $\pm$ 0.06 eV and introduce a second order deformation potential. The experimental results are found to be well described by tight-binding simulations. These new high strain coefficients will be suitable for the design of future CMOS-compatible lasers and opto-electronic devices based on highly strained germanium.

Ge under high strain is predicted to become a direct bandgap semiconductor. Very large deformations can be introduced using microbridge devices. However, at the microscale, strain values are commonly deduced from Raman spectroscopy using empirical linear models only established up to 1.2% for uniaxial stress. In this work, we calibrate the Raman-strain relation at higher strain using synchrotron based microdiffraction. The Ge microbridges show unprecedented high tensile strain up to 4.9 % corresponding to an unexpected 9.9 cm-1 Raman shift. We demonstrate experimentally and theoretically that the Raman strain relation is not linear and we provide a more accurate expression., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

We demonstrate the crossover from indirect- to direct band gap in tensile-strained germanium by temperature-dependent photoluminescence. The samples are strained microbridges that enhance a biaxial strain of 0.16% up to 3.6% uniaxial tensile strain. Cooling the bridges to 20 K increases the uniaxial strain up to a maximum of 5.4%. Temperature-dependent photoluminescence reveals the crossover to a fundamental direct band gap to occur between 4.0% and 4.5%. Our data are in good agreement with new theoretical computations that predict a strong bowing of the band parameters with strain., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures

We report on the exchange biasing of self-assembled ferromagnetic GeMn nanocolumns by GeMn-oxide caps. The x-ray absorption spectroscopy analysis of this surface oxide shows a multiplet fine structure that is typical of the Mn2+ valence state in MnO. A magnetization hysteresis shift |HE|~100 Oe and a coercivity enhancement of about 70 Oe have been obtained upon cooling (300-5 K) in a magnetic field as low as 0.25 T. This exchange bias is attributed to the interface coupling between the ferromagnetic nanocolumns and the antiferromagnetic MnO-like caps. The effect enhancement is achieved by depositing a MnO layer on the GeMn nanocolumns., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

Condensed Matter - Materials Science - Abstract
We report on the structural properties of Ge_(1-x)Mn_x layers grown by molecular beam epitaxy. In these layers, nanocolumns with a high Mn content are embedded in an almost-pure Ge matrix. We have used grazing-incidence X-ray scattering, atomic force and transmission electron microscopy to study the structural properties of the columns. We demonstrate how the elastic deformation of the matrix (as calculated using atomistic simulations) around the columns, as well as the average inter-column distance can account for the shape of the diffusion around Bragg peaks., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures

Condensed Matter - Materials Science - Abstract
We have investigated the effect of partial isovalent anion substitution in Ga1-xMnxAs on electrical transport and ferromagnetism. Substitution of only 2.4% of As by P induces a metal-insulator transition at a constant Mn doping of x=0.046 while the replacement of 0.4 % As with N results in the crossover from metal to insulator for x=0.037. This remarkable behavior is consistent with a scenario in which holes located within an impurity band are scattered by alloy disorder in the anion sublattice. The shorter mean free path of holes, which mediate ferromagnetism, reduces the Curie temperature TC from 113 K to 60 K (100 K to 65 K) upon the introduction of 3.1 % P (1% N) into the As sublattice., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures

Significant relations were observed between select infant-care and weaning behaviors and growth in body weight in common marmoset monkeys (Callithrix jacchus). The patterns of these relations suggest that earlier occurrence of developmental milestones, such as cessation of transport (being off carriers) and weaning to solid food, were associated with slower growth during the subsequent period. In contrast, more frequent nursing bouts during the period in which weaning was initiated were associated with higher growth rates. In the case of being off carriers, these effects did not carry over to older ages, suggesting that any deficits in growth were temporary. In the case of earlier, more frequent consumption of solid food, there was some suggestion that there were longer-term effects, followed by catch-up growth. The knee-to-heel length of subjects was not related to the measured behaviors. There was no relation between early weaning to solid food and leanness at day 75, suggesting that, although this behavior was affecting overall weight, it did not affect relative gains of fat versus lean mass. There were, however, significant correlations between cessation of transport or frequency of nursing bouts during the weaning period and leanness, with earlier cessation of transport and less frequent nursing associated with leaner infants, after weaning. Our results differed from those of a previous study that found a relation between linear growth and abuse in this species, with abuse defined as physical injury by other members of the group. We found no differences in growth between abused and nonabused infants. However, abused infants had lower birth weight.

Plant traits—the morphological, anatomical, physiological, biochemical and phenological characteristics of plants—determine how plants respond to environmental factors, affect other trophic levels, and influence ecosystem properties and their benefits and detriments to people. Plant trait data thus represent the basis for a vast area of research spanning from evolutionary biology, community and functional ecology, to biodiversity conservation, ecosystem and landscape management, restoration, biogeography and earth system modelling. Since its foundation in 2007, the TRY database of plant traits has grown continuously. It now provides unprecedented data coverage under an open access data policy and is the main plant trait database used by the research community worldwide. Increasingly, the TRY database also supports new frontiers of trait-based plant research, including the identification of data gaps and the subsequent mobilization or measurement of new data. To support this development, in this article we evaluate the extent of the trait data compiled in TRY and analyse emerging patterns of data coverage and representativeness. Best species coverage is achieved for categorical traits—almost complete coverage for ‘plant growth form’. However, most traits relevant for ecology and vegetation modelling are characterized by continuous intraspecific variation and trait–environmental relationships. These traits have to be measured on individual plants in their respective environment. Despite unprecedented data coverage, we observe a humbling lack of completeness and representativeness of these continuous traits in many aspects. We, therefore, conclude that reducing data gaps and biases in the TRY database remains a key challenge and requires a coordinated approach to data mobilization and trait measurements. This can only be achieved in collaboration with other initiatives., publishedVersion

- Abstract
While intensive efforts have been devoted to studying the nature of the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI), little attention has been paid to understanding its role in the mechanical failures of electrodes. Here we unveil the impact of SEI inhomogeneities on early-stage defect formation in Si electrodes. Buried under the SEI, these early-stage defects are inaccessible by most surface-probing techniques. With operando full field diffraction X-ray microscopy, we observe the formation of these defects in real time and connect their origin to a heterogeneous degree of lithiation. This heterogeneous lithiation is further correlated to inhomogeneities in topography and lithium-ion mobility in both the inner- and outer-SEI, thanks to a combination of operando atomic force microscopy, electrochemical strain microscopy and sputter-etched X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Our multi-modal study bridges observations across the multi-level interfaces (Si/LixSi/inner-SEI/outer-SEI), thus offering novel insights into the impact of SEI homogeneities on the structural stability of Si-based lithium-ion batteries.

The application of high values of strain to Ge considerably improves its light emission properties and can even turn it into a direct band gap semiconductor. Raman spectroscopy is routinely used for strain measurements. Typical Raman-strain relationships that are used for Ge were defined up to ~1% strain using phonon deformation potential theory. In this work, we have studied this relationship at higher strain levels by calculating and measuring the Raman spectral shift-strain relations in several different strain configurations. Since differences were shown between the usual phonon deformation potential theory and ab-initio calculations, we highlight the need for experimental calibrations. We have then measured the strain in highly strained Ge micro-bridges and micro-crosses using Raman spectroscopy performed in tandem with synchrotron based micro-diffraction. High values of strain are reported, which enable the calibration of the Raman-strain relations up to 1.8% of in plane strain for the (001) biaxial stress, 4.8% strain along 〈100〉, and 3.8% strain along 〈110〉. For Ge micro-bridges, oriented along 〈100〉, the nonlinearity of the Raman shift-strain relation is confirmed. For the 〈110〉 orientation, we have shown that an unexpected non-linearity in the Raman-strain relationship has also to be taken into account for high stress induction. This work demonstrates an unprecedented level of strain measurement for the 〈110〉 uniaxial stress and gives a better understanding of the Raman-strain relations in Ge. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
A six-month laboratory scale study was carried out to investigate the effect of biochar and compost amendments on complex chemical mixtures of tar, heavy metals and metalloids in two genuine contaminated soils. An integrated approach, where organic and inorganic contaminants bioavailability and distribution changes, along with a range of microbiological indicators and ecotoxicological bioassays, was used to provide multiple lines of evidence to support the risk characterisation and assess the remediation end-point. Both compost and biochar amendment (p = 0.005) as well as incubation time (p = 0.001) significantly affected the total and bioavailable concentrations of the total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) in the two soils. Specifically, TPH concentration decreased by 46% and 30% in Soil 1 and Soil 2 amended with compost. These decreases were accompanied by a reduction of 78% (Soil 1) and 6% (Soil 2) of the bioavailable hydrocarbons and the most significant decrease was observed for the medium to long chain aliphatic compounds (EC16–35) and medium molecular weight aromatic compounds (EC16–21). Compost amendment enhanced the degradation of both the aliphatic and aromatic fractions in the two soils, while biochar contributed to lock the hydrocarbons in the contaminated soils. Neither compost nor biochar affected the distribution and behaviour of the heavy metals (HM) and metalloids in the different soil phases, suggesting that the co-presence of heavy metals and metalloids posed a low risk. Strong negative correlations were observed between the bioavailable hydrocarbon fractions and the ecotoxicological assays suggesting that when bioavailable concentrations decreased, the toxicity also decreased. This study showed that adopting a combined diagnostic approach can significantly help to identify optimal remediation strategies and contribute to change the over-conservative nature of the current risk assessments thus reducing the costs associated wi

We have grown Ge
3 Mn5 clusters by codepositing germanium and manganese atoms on Ge(001) substrates using low temperature molecular beam epitaxy and further annealing the films at high temperature. Clusters are spherical and randomly distributed in the germanium film in epitaxial relationship with the diamond lattice. They exhibit a broad size distribution. By performing a careful x-ray diffraction analysis, we could find that 97% of Ge3 Mn5 clusters have their c-axis perpendicular to the film plane while 3% exhibit in-plane c-axis. We could also show a slight in-plane distortion of the Ge3 Mn5 lattice leading to a reduction of uniaxial magnetic anisotropy. These observations are well confirmed by complementary superconducting quantum interference device and electron paramagnetic resonance measurements. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published
