Abstract

In this demonstration paper we present SmartLab1, an architecture for managing a cluster of both Android Real Devices (ARDs) and Android Virtual Devices (AVDs) via an intuitive web-based interface. Our architecture consists of several exciting components for re-programming and instrumenting smartphones to perform application testing and data gathering in a facile manner, as well as executing mockup experiments by 'feeding' the devices with GPS/sensor readings. We will particularly demonstrate the various components of our architecture that encompasses smartphone sensor data collected by mobile users and organized in our distributed NoSQL document store. The given datasets can then be replayed on our testbed comprising of real and virtual smartphones accessible to developers through our Web 2.0 user interface. Abstract

Intensive rabbit breeding normally involves the use of small collective cages housing from 2 to 8 rabbits according to the surface area of the cage. Average density normally lies between 15 and 18 rabbits/m2. Increased interest in safeguarding animal welfare in livestock farming and the need to reduce intensive rabbit production costs have led in recent years to studying alternative housing to the classic cage. In this context, rabbit breeding in colonies could represent an interesting alternative to the classic cage. Colonial breeding and greater space availability appear to better satisfy the behavioural needs of rabbits and their welfare (Ferrante et al., 1997). Abstract

Since the large multicenter DIG trial has shown no effects of digitalis on the all-cause mortality of patients with chronic heart failure (HF), the broad prescription of this drug in patients with HF appears to be at the very least, questionable. The aims of this study were: to analyze prescription patterns of digitalis, from 1995 to 2000, in a large group of outpatients with HF; to analyze the independent predictors of digitalis prescription and to evaluate the impact of the results of the DIG trial on the prescription rate of this drug.From 1995 to 2000, 11 070 HF outpatients (mean age 64 +/- 12 years, ejection fraction 35 +/- 12%) were enrolled in a large Italian database.Out of 11 070 patients, 7198 (65%) were treated with digitalis. At multivariate analysis, the following variables were independently associated with digitalis prescription; atrial fibrillation (odds ratio [OR] 3.3, 95% confidence interval [CI] 2.9-3.8), ejection fraction30% (OR 1.7, 95% CI 1.5-1.9), NYHA class III-IV vs II-III (OR 1.3, 95% CI 1.2-1.5), admission for HF during the previous year (OR 1.4, 95% CI 1.2-1.5). After the publication of the DIG trial, there was a significant reduction in the rate of digitalis prescription: the percentage of patients taking digitalis fell from 68% in 1996-1997 to 61% in 1998-1999 (p0.001).Over 60% of Italian outpatients with HF were treated with digitalis; as expected, patients with a low ejection fraction, atrial fibrillation and in a more advanced stage of HF are more likely to receive this drug. Finally, after the publication of the DIG trial, the rate of digitalis prescription significantly decreased.

36. Coccidioidomycosis Transmission Through Organ Transplantation: A Report of the OPTN Ad HocDisease Transmission Advisory Committee

Abstract

Donor-derived coccidioidomycosis has caused unexpected morbidity and mortality in transplant recipients. All proven or probable reports of donor-derived coccidioidomycosis to the Disease Transmission Advisory Committee between 2005 and August 2012 were reviewed. Six reports of proven or probable coccidioidomycosis were discovered. In four of six, the infection was first detected at autopsy in the recipient. In two cases it was first identified in the donor. Twenty-one recipients received organs from these six donors. Transmission occurred in 43% at a median of 30 days posttransplant with a mortality rate of 28.5%. Eleven recipients received preemptive antifungals, seven did not receive treatment, and treatment information was not reported for three recipients. Five of seven who did not receive prophylaxis/treatment died and all 11 who received early therapy survived. Six deaths occurred 14 to 55 days after transplant, with a median of 21 days. For exposed recipients, donor-derived coccidioidomycosis is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality. Evidence of infection in one recipient should prompt immediate evaluation for treatment of all other recipients from the same donor as preemptive treatment was effective. Further studies are needed to decide whether all donors from endemic areas should have routine serologic screening.

40. EFFECT OF COLLECTION FREQUENCY ON RABBIT SEMEN PRODUCTION

Abstract

[EN] The effect of collection frequency on the volume, concentration, motility and live sperm of rabbit semen was studied. Ten crossbreed Hyla bucks were used in two groups (five per group} during 17 weeks. In the extensive rhythm, two ejaculates per male were collected 10-15 minutes apart on one day each week. In the semi-intensive group two ejaculates per day were collected on two consecutive days each week, The proportion of useful ejaculates obtained decreased as collection frequency increased (O. 75 and 0.58 for the extensive and semi-intensive rhythms, respectively). Among the ejaculate characteristics studied - volume/ejaculate, sperm concentration, motility, live sperm - only volume/ejaculate showed significant differences between rhythms (0.68±0.06 and 0.57±0.01 mi for the extensive and semi-intensive rhythms, respectively). The number of doses (20 million spermatozoa) produced per ejaculate decreased as collection frequency increased, but the number of doses produced per week was higher in the semi-intensive than in the extensive rhythms (28.8±1.5 and 23.3±2.0 doses/week, respectively). These results suggest that semi-intensive rhythms should be used, at least at times of the year that are less favourable for male libido, in arder to obtain a larger number of doses per week., [FR] Les conséquences de 2 rythmes de prélevement de la semence ont été étudiées sur le volume, la concentration, la moti lité et le taux de spermatozo'ides vivants, en utilisant 1 O lapins adultes de génotype Hyla. Pendant 17 semaines, 5 sujets ont été prélevés deux fois de suite, un jour par semaine (rythme extensif) et les 5 autres lapins ont été prélevés deux fois de suite, deux jours consécutifs (rythme semi-intensif). La proportion d'éjaculats utilisables pour l'insémination artificielle est plus faible en rythme semi-intensif qu'en rythme extensif (0.58 vs 0.75). 41. EFFECT OF LYSINE AND METHIONINE ON LIBIDO AND SEMEN CHARACTERISTICS OF BUCKS

Abstract

[EN] The aim of this experiment was to study the influence of dietary lysine and methionine levels on the libido and semen quality of bucks. Forty crossbred Hyla HYLA rabbit males (10-12 months old) were subjected to four diets (15% crude protein) differing in lysine and methionine content (diet A 0.64 and 0.58%; diet B 0.75 and 0.58%; diet C 0.64 and 0.65%; diet D 0.75 and 0.65 of lysine and methionine +cystine, respectively). Two successive ejaculates were collected once a week for 12 consecutive months. Semen evaluations of for volume, colour, pH, motility, concentration and percentage of live spermatozoa were performed every two weeks. Dietary supplementation with lysine and methionine affected few parameters and there was little variation in the values. never experienced large oscillations. Diets with higher lysine contents increased live sperm concentration from 77.1 to 78.2% in the second ejaculate and reduced the necessary interval between mating and ejaculation (sec. 20.8 vs 21.3 and 22.6 vs 23.1 for ejaculates 1 and 11, respectively). Supplementation with methionine increased the motility of ejaculate 11 (72.7 vs 71.2%) and reduced libido at the first sampling (sec. 21.4 vs 20.6 sec.). No significan! differences in the reproduction parameters (fertility -75.2% on average-, total born/litter and born alive itter - 7.7 alive on average) were found for does inseminated with the semen of bucks undergoing dietary treatments (100 Al /treatment)., [FR] Le but de cette étude a été d'étudier l'influence du taux de lysine et de méthionine dans l'alimentation des lapins males sur leur libido et la qualité de leur sperme. Quarante males croisés Hyla (agés de 1 O a 12 mois) ont re9u 4 aliments (15 % de protéines brutes) dont les taux de lysine et de méthionine différaient (aliment A : 0,64 et 0,58% ; aliment B : 0,75 et 0,58 % ; aliment C : 0,64 et 0,65 % ; aliment D : 0,75 et 0,65 % de lysine et méthionine + cystine, respectivement. Deux éjaculats successifs ont été récoltés 1 fois par semaine pendan! 12 mois consécutifs. L'évaluation du volume, de la couleur, du pH, de la motilité, de la concentration et du pourcentage de spermatozo"ides vivants du sperme a été effectuée toutes les deux semaines. L'addition de lysine et de méthionine dans l'aliment affecte peu de paramétres et les valeurs ne montrent jamais de grandes variations. Les aliments contenant le plus de lysine entralnent une augmentation de la concentration en spermatozo"ides vivants de 77,1 a 78,2 pour le second éjaculat et réduit l'intervalle nécessaire entre le début du comportement de saillie et l'éjaculation (20,8 sec. vs 21,3 et 22,6 vs 23, 1 pour les éjaculats 1 et 2 respectivement). L'addition de méthionine augmente la motilité de l'éjaculat 2 (72, 7 vs 71,2 %) mais réduit la libido au premier prélévement ( 21,4 vs 20,6 sec). 11 n'y a pas eu de différence significative enregistrée, concernant la fertilité (75,2% en moyenne), le nombre total de lapereaux nés et le nombre de nés vivants par portée (7,7), chez les lapines inséminées avec le sperme des males ayant re9u les aliments expérimentaux (100 IA par lot).

48. DonorNet and the Potential Effects on Organ Utilization

Abstract

The evolution of communication as donor data flows from organ procurement organization to transplant centers has evolved with the incorporation of DonorNet 2007®into the UNetSMsystem. The ensuing study looks at DonorNet's impact on this process. We established defined time periods for comparison purposes. The study looked at match number for organ placement and overall organ utilization with a focus on ischemia time and graft outcomes. The results of the study demonstrate no significant change in the median match number of organ placement in liver or kidney transplantation. Changes in discard rates were varied amongst transplanted organs and there were noticeable changes in organ sharing with an increase in local allocation for kidney and liver and an ensuing decrease in regional and national distribution. There were no significant differences in the outcomes of livers and kidneys with low offer numbers compared with those with high offer numbers. Overall the study suggests a modest impact by DonorNet on organ placement and utilization, but a longer term study would need to be done to fully evaluate its impact.
