Catalytic co-pyrolysis of biomass and plastics (HDPE (high density polyethylene), PP (polypropylene) and PET (polyethylene terephthalate)) has been performed in a fixed-bed reactor in presence of cobalt based alumina, ceria and ceria-alumina catalysts to analyze the product distribution and selectivity. Catalysts are synthesized using co-precipitation method and characterized by BET (Brunauer-Emmett-Teller) surface area and XRD analysis. The effect of catalytic co-pyrolysis at different temperature with product distribution has been evaluated. The results have clearly shown the synergistic effect between biomass and plastics, the liquid products gradually increases forming with rise in the plastic content in the blend. Gaseous products have yielded most during pyrolysis of blend having biomass/plastics ratio of 5:1 with the presence of 40% Co/30% CeO2/30% Al2O3 catalyst with hydrogen gas production touched its peak of 47 vol%. Catalytic performance enhanced with increase with the cobalt loading, with best performance attributing to 40% Co/30% CeO2/30% Al2O3 catalyst. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Metal micro-/nano hollow spheres have been widely applied in numerous fields during the last decade. This review will only focus on the synthetic strategies to synthesize hollow spherical structures in the enhancement of their electrocatalytic activity, especially the metal hollow spherical materials. We present a comprehensive overview of synthetic strategies for metal hollow spherical structures which have been approached specifically in electrochemical reactions. These synthetic methods are mainly categorized as hard templates, soft templates, sacrificial templates and without templates. The review further includes electrocatalytic approaches of hollow spherical metals in different electrochemical processes, especially the methanol electro-oxidation reaction for methanol fuel cell application and hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions in water electrolyzer, as metal hollow spherical materials are especially applied in these specific reactions.

The present study evaluates the synthesis by solvo-thermal method and electrocatalytic activity of nickel nano-particles encapsulated in hollow carbon sphere, in hydrogen and oxygen evolution reaction in PEM water electrolyzer. The XRD patterns have ascertained the formation of nickel metal with different planes in face centered cubic (fcc) and hexagonal closed pack (hcp) form. SEM and TEM images have confirmed the nickel nano-particles with diameter of 10-50 nm inside the 0.2 mu m sized hollow carbon spheres. The BET surface area values gradually decreased with greater encapsulation of nickel; although the electrochemical active surface area (ECSA) values have been calculated as quite higher. It confirms the well dispersion of nickel in the materials and induces their electrocatalytic performance through the active surface sites. The cyclic voltammetric studies have evaluated hydrogen desorption peaks as five times more intense in nickel encapsulated materials, in comparison to the pure hollow carbon spheres. The anodic peak current density value has reached the highest level of 1.9 A cm(-2) for HCSNi10, which gradually decreases with lesser amount of nickel in the electrocatalysts. These electrocatalysts have been proved electrochemically stable during their usage for 48 h long duration under potentiostatic condition. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In recent days, enormous numbers of research groups are working on Perovskite solar cell attaining huge attention in application purposes. This chapter emphasizes on the recent developments in terms of synthetic approach of materials with their various fabrication techniques. This chapter covers the recent works on perovskite solar cells with carbon-based nanomaterials semitransparent photovoltaics and tandem solar cells. We will discuss on the difficulties due to the presence of toxic metals and problems faced during the fabrication of large area and/or flexible devices. The future aspects in wide-scale applications of these devices will also be taken into account with accountability of their stability.

Carbon micro-/nano-hollow spheres have enormously been applied in numerous fields during the last decade. This chapter will focus on the important synthetic strategies of nano-carbon hollow spheres which will make those materials more appropriate toward carbon-free energy applications. We include few results of their electrocatalytic activity in PEM water electrolyzer. The content present in this chapter will be a great exposure toward the scientific community by knowing that hollow carbon spheres with greater porosity and metal nanoparticle encapsulation can be potential candidate in the field of electrochemical science.

Alginate polyurethane hybrid materials are prepared by varying mole ratio of 2, 4-TDI as a di-isocyanate and alginic acid as a polyol in presence of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as a solvent. FT-IR and 13C one-dimensional (1D) solid state NMR (SSNMR) spectroscopy indicates that alginic acid is converted into alginate-polyurethane hybrid material via urethane linkage. Surface morphology of alginate-polyurethane hybrids changes by varying alginic acid: TDI ratio. The peak at near 221 °C in DSC thermogram of alginic acid (Alg) is shifted to higher temperature in alginate-polyurethane hybrid (Algpu1 and Algpu2). TGA study shows that alginate-polyurethane hybrid prepared using alginic acid: TDI = 1:1 (Algpu2) is more stable than alginic acid: TDI = 1:0.5 (Algpu1) at 300 °C. Kinetic analysis was performed to fit with TGA data, where the entire degradation process has been considered as three consecutive 1st order reactions. This study shows that thermal stability of alginate-polyurethane hybrid material was increased by adjusting mole ratio of 2, 4-TDI and alginic acid.

Alginic acid and metal (sodium) alginates was prepared from fresh algae using hot extraction method. Calcium alginates are also prepared from sodium alginate by varying calcium ion (calcium chloride) concentrations. FTIR spectra indicate that alginic acid is converted into metal alginate. Surface morphology as well as total intrusion volume, porosity (%) and pore size distribution changes by changing calcium ion (cross-linker) concentrations. Thermal degradation of calcium alginates showed a stepwise weight loss during thermal sweep, indicating different types of reactions during degradation. Calcium alginate (Calg0.6) prepared at low calcium ion concentration is least stable whereas at highest calcium ion concentration, the alginate sample (Calg20) is most stable at final degradation temperature (800 °C). Kinetic analysis was performed to fit with TGA data, where the entire degradation process has been considered as four consecutive 1st order reactions.

Alginates, extracted from algae are linear unbranched polymers containing β-(1→4)-linked d-mannuronic acid (M) and α-(1→4)-linked l-guluronic acid (G) residues. The conversion of alginic acid into the metal alginate is confirmed using FTIR spectroscopy. Asymmetric and symmetric stretching of free carboxyl group present in metal alginate occurs almost at the same position in various solvent compositions. Total intrusion volume of metal alginate prepared in propanol (0.0742 mL/g) is greater compared to those in ethanol (0.0648 mL/g) and methanol (0.0393 mL/g) as solvent. Surface morphology as well as porosity and pore size distribution of metal alginate are greatly influenced by solvent. It can be seen from thermal analysis results that calcium alginate prepared using different solvent compositions started decomposing at 100 °C, but rapid degradation started around 200 °C. The results showed a stepwise weight loss during thermal sweep, indicating different types of reactions during degradation. First and second step of rapid degradation was situated around 200–300 and 300–550 °C, respectively; whereas the final step is situated around 550–650 °C. The trend of degradation was similar for all the solvents, although the amount of final residue varied from one solvent to another. At the same time, lower thermal stability was also observed with higher heating rates. Additionally, a kinetic analysis was performed to fit with TGA data, where the entire degradation process has been considered as three consecutive first order reactions.

Total intrusion volume, porosity (%) and pore size distribution also changes by changing cross-linker and cross-linker concentration. Thermal degradation results reveals that zinc and cadmium alginates started decomposing at 100 °C, but rapid degradation started around 300 °C and showed a stepwise weight loss during thermal sweep, indicating different types of reactions during degradation. Kinetic analysis was performed to fit with TGA data, where the entire degradation process has been considered as two or three consecutive 1st order reactions.

Alginic acid and metal alginates are prepared from fresh algae using extraction method. A FTIR spectrum indicates that alginic acid is converted into the metal alginate. Comparing calcium and cobalt alginates, asymmetric stretching of free carboxyl group of calcium alginate at 1630 cm−1 is shifted to 1585 cm−1 in cobalt alginate, due to the change of charge density, radius and atomic weight of the cation, creating a new environment around the carbonyl group. The strong exothermic peak of alginic acid in DSC thermogram indicates the decomposition of biopolymer, whereas strong exothermic peak of metal alginate in DSC thermogram attributed to the decomposition of biopolymer and formation of respective carbonate. Based on DSC study, the decomposition of cobalt alginate occurs at higher temperature comparing to those of sodium and calcium alginate, which may conclude into the higher stability of cobalt alginate. TGA results reveal that, cobalt alginate is more stable than calcium and sodium alginate at 300 °C temperature. Surface morphology (at same magnification), as well as porosity (%) and pore size distribution results change with metals present in different metal alginates.

Functional, macroporous, beaded copolymers containing epoxy groups were synthesized for immobilization of polyphenol oxidase (PPO) from edible mushroom (Agaricus bisporus). The effect of incorporation of two different sets of monomers such as glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) and allyl glycidyl ether (AGE) and the effect of cross-linking agent ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDM) with varying cross-link densities on binding and expression of mushroom PPO activity were studied. The effect of porogen viz. cyclohexanol and hexanol on PPO immobilization was studied. AGE copolymers with hexanol as a porogen were found to give higher binding and expression of PPO activity than GE polymers. Cross-linking of amino groups of enzyme with 5% glutaraldehyde for 6 h gave a stable binding of PPO on AGE-75(Hex) polymer with storage half-life of approximately 25 days. Under optimum conditions, AGE-75(Hex) polymer gave 70.3% of activity yield while percent retention of PPO activity was found to be 83.5%. Immobilized PPO showed a broader pH, higher temperature and excellent storage stability.

A simple and selective one-step solid-phase extraction procedure using chemically modified polymer resin (Amberlite XAD-4) with crown ether was investigated for the measurement of urinary catecholamines. After loading the urine samples (adjusted to pH 4) on the synthesized adsorbent cartridge, the column was washed with methanol followed by water and then the adsorbed catecholamines were eluted by 1.0 mL of 6.0 M acetic acid. The effectiveness of sample clean-up method was demonstrated by reversed-phase ion-pair high-performance liquid chromatography with electrochemical detection. Under optimal condition, the recoveries of epinephrine, norepinephrine, and dopamine from spiked urine sample were >86% for all catecholamines. The detection limits (n = 5) for epinephrine, norepinephrine, and dopamine were 37, 52, and 46 nmol/L, respectively.
