Exotic annual grasses are transforming native arid and semi-arid ecosystems globally by accelerating fire cycles that drive vegetation state changes. Cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum), a particularly widespread and aggressive exotic annual grass, is a key management target in national parks of the western United States due to its impacts on wildfire and biodiversity loss. Cheatgrass is known for its high interannual variability and can grow in a wide range of conditions. The objectives were to (1) map the presence and persistence of cheatgrass in national park units across a 11-year period using remote sensing, and (2) identify the biophysical parameters that correlate with cheatgrass persistence. We used remote sensing and GIS tools to develop a systematic model to characterize the status and environmental correlates of cheatgrass invasions in seven national park units in the western United States. On average cheatgrass covered 3.8% of park areas, each park ranging from 0.8 to 24.8% coverage. Where cheatgrass was detected, persistent populations across time (hotspots) made up on average 13% of cheatgrass areas. Hotspots were found in areas with deeper plant-available water, lower elevations, colder mean winter temperatures, flatter slopes, higher soil clay content, and lower mean fall precipitation. Study results identified spatiotemporal patterns of plant invasions and key environmental drivers that influence invasion patterns. GIS tool development and analysis from this study were used to generate invasion maps for each park, which can be used to mitigate wildfire and biodiveristy loss.

The spread of invasive grasses across Earth are modifying fire cycles resulting in state changes in arid ecosystems. Disturbance, biotic resistance of native biological communities and propagule pressure, are likely the important factors influencing the spread of invasive grasses and their influence on changing fire regimes. Over a 5‐year period (2011–2016), we tested how the potential loss of biotic resistance of native plant and native rodent communities related to fire and rodent exclusion treatments, in concert with increased propagule pressure affected the establishment of Bromus tectorum L. (cheatgrass) and the spread of secondary fires. Our study results suggest that native plant and native rodent communities contribute to biotic resistance against cheatgrass invasion and that fire and high propagule pressure act to diminish biotic resistance by native communities. Five years into the study, cheatgrass establishment was 11‐fold greater in burned plots than in unburned plots (with native plant communities still intact), 2.4‐fold greater in rodent exclusion plots than rodent access plots and 1.8‐fold greater with increased propagule pressure. In arid and semiarid ecosystems, invasion by exotic grasses may be driving state changes in vegetation defined by losses of native shrub communities. Changes in wildfire regimes and fall precipitation timing related to climate change may promote fluctuations in resource availability that reinforces invasion and state changes in vegetation. The objective of this study was to investigate how earlier fall precipitation timing and fire affected the germination, establishment, and growth of the dominant native shrub Wyoming big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata subsp. wyomingensis), and one of the most problematic invaders, cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum L.) in the Great Basin. We extracted soil cores from Rush Valley, Utah (UT), USA, on the eastern side of the Great Basin ecoregion and placed them in a common garden in Provo, UT, and planted seeds of sagebrush and cheatgrass in individual cores. We measured the response of sagebrush and cheatgrass to experimental fire and two fall precipitation timing pulses in a full factorial design. Water was added for two weeks in early September (early fall treatment) and mid‐October (late fall treatment). We measured seedling emergence, plant height, biomass, density, seed production, and survival. Early fall precipitation did not significantly affect the amount of cheatgrass or sagebrush seedling emergence. Early fall precipitation significantly increased cheatgrass density, height, biomass, and seed production, and sagebrush height and biomass, but not density. Surprisingly, cheatgrass did not respond positively to fire. In contrast, fire increased sagebrush density (twofold) and survival. These findings indicate that fire can have positive impacts on sagebrush establishment. The data suggest that projected increases in fall moisture in the Great Basin due to climate change are likely to have positive impacts on both cheatgrass and sagebrush. However, additional studies are needed to identify how fall precipitation timing and fire might impact competitive interactions between sagebrush and cheatgrass and the bearing on invasion success at influencing state changes in the Great Basin.

Resource availability and biotic interactions control opportunities for the establishment and expansion of invasive species. Studies on biotic resistance to plant invasions have typically focused on competition and occasionally on herbivory, while resource-oriented studies have focused on water or nutrient pulses. Through synthesizing these approaches, we identify conditions that create invasion opportunities. In a nested fully factorial experiment, we examined how chronic alterations in water availability and rodent density influenced the density of invasive species in both the Mojave Desert and the Great Basin Desert after fire. We used structural equation modeling to examine the direct and mediated effects controlling the density of invasives in both deserts. In the first 2 years after our controlled burn in the Great Basin, we observed that fire had a direct effect on increasing the invasive forb Halogeton glomeratus as well as a mediated effect through reducing rodent densities and herbivory. 4 years after the burn, the invasive annual grass Bromus tectorum was suppressing Halogeton glomeratus in mammal exclusion plots. There was a clear transition from years where invasives were controlled by disturbance and trophic interactions to years were resource availability and competition controlled invasive density. Similarly, in the Mojave Desert we observed a strong early influence of trophic processes on invasives, with Schismus arabicus benefitted by rodents and Bromus rubens negatively influenced by rodents. In the Mojave Desert, post-fire conditions became less important in controlling the abundance of invasives over time, while Bromus rubens was consistently benefitted by increases in fall rainfall.

Invasions of exotic grasses are increasing the spatial extent and temporal frequency of wildfire. Mitigation efforts to prevent wildfire depend on understanding the biophysical agents that drive spatial and temporal distributions of exotic grasses. We examined the growth and reproduction of the exotic grass red brome (Bromus rubens L.) in response to precipitation timing in the fall period, fertile-island topography, and fire history in the Mojave Desert. Tiller density, shoot height, shoot biomass, and seed production were measured. Early precipitation timing (mid-October versus late November) triggered early germination and led to greater red brome density (1.5-fold), shoot height (1.9-fold), shoot biomass (6.8-fold) and seed production (3.9-fold). Soil cores collected from beneath shrubs (fertile-islands) versus shrub inter-spaces also produced red brome with enhanced shoot height (1.5-fold), and seed production (1.9-fold). The legacy effect of wildfires on soils (10 years after the fires) had no significant effect on the growth or reproduction of red brome. Soils beneath shrubs had significantly less gravel and higher mineral nitrogen (N) concentrations than soils from shrub inter-spaces. Soil gravel % was negatively correlated with red brome density, height, biomass and seed production while mineral N tended to have weak positively correlations with red brome density and seed production. These results suggest that the growth and reproduction of red brome is influenced by fall precipitation timing and soil characteristics. Management planning for fire intervention should consider fall precipitation patterns, soil characteristics and shrub topography as important determinants of red brome growth and fire potential.

Biological invasions are responsive to changing wildfire regimes related to human activities that are altering biological communities. Our objective was to investigate how fire, rodent activity, and competition among plant species modify plant community structure, invasion patterns, and vulnerability to altered fire regimes. We imposed experimental fires, and reduced rodent density using fencing in a full factorial design and quantified competitive interactions among plant species in the northeast Mojave Desert that has experienced dramatic increases in plant invasion and fire in recent years. Vegetation surveys were conducted in the experimental plots to determine plant density, cover, and biomass of herbaceous plants over a 5-year period. Rodent exclusion increased the density, cover, and biomass of Bromus rubens, an invasive annual grass, and density of forb species. In contrast, rodent exclusion decreased the density, cover, and biomass of Schismus spp. another dominant annual invader. Fire increased Schismus spp. and forb species density, cover, and biomass but decreased B. rubens density. Negative spatial correlation between B. rubens and Schismus spp., and forbs indicated interspecific competition among the dominant plant species. Fire reduced rodent community diversity (Shannon’s) 2.5-fold, which was correlated with increases in B. rubens cover and biomass, and native forb diversity. Fire, high rodent diversity, and competition from the other plant species may decrease fire potential in our study system by reducing the density and biomass of B. rubens, which because of its taller growth form tends to ignite and carry fire better than Schismus spp. and forbs.
