Abstract

The Kuiper Belt is a distant region of the Solar System. On 1 January 2019, the New Horizons spacecraft flew close to (486958) 2014 MU69, a Cold Classical Kuiper Belt Object, a class of objects that have never been heated by the Sun and are therefore well preserved since their formation. Here we describe initial results from these encounter observations. MU69 is a bi-lobed contact binary with a flattened shape, discrete geological units, and noticeable albedo heterogeneity. However, there is little surface color and compositional heterogeneity. No evidence for satellites, ring or dust structures, gas coma, or solar wind interactions was detected. Abstract

The LOng Range Reconnaissance Imager (LORRI) is a panchromatic (360--910 nm), narrow-angle (field of view = 0.29 deg), high spatial resolution (pixel scale = 1.02 arcsec) visible light imager used on NASA's New Horizons (NH) mission for both science observations and optical navigation. Calibration observations began several months after the NH launch on 2006 January 19 and have been repeated annually throughout the course of the mission, which is ongoing. This paper describes the in-flight LORRI calibration measurements, and the results derived from our analysis of the calibration data. LORRI has been remarkably stable over time with no detectable changes (at the 1% level) in sensitivity or optical performance since launch. By employing 4 by 4 re-binning of the CCD pixels during read out, a special spacecraft tracking mode, exposure times of 30 sec, and co-addition of approximately 100 images, LORRI can detect unresolved targets down to V = 22 (SNR=5). LORRI images have an instantaneous dynamic range of 3500, which combined with exposure time control ranging from 0ms to 64,967 ms in 1ms steps supports high resolution, high sensitivity imaging of planetary targets spanning heliocentric distances from Jupiter to deep in the Kuiper belt, enabling a wide variety of scientific investigations. We describe here how to transform LORRI images from raw (engineering) units into scientific (calibrated) units for both resolved and unresolved targets. Abstract

The Pluto system was recently explored by NASA's New Horizons spacecraft, making closest approach on 14 July 2015. Pluto's surface displays diverse landforms, terrain ages, albedos, colors, and composition gradients. Evidence is found for a water-ice crust, geologically young surface units, surface ice convection, wind streaks, volatile transport, and glacial flow. Pluto's atmosphere is highly extended, with trace hydrocarbons, a global haze layer, and a surface pressure near 10 microbars. Pluto's diverse surface geology and long-term activity raise fundamental questions about how small planets remain active many billions of years after formation. Pluto's large moon Charon displays tectonics and evidence for a heterogeneous crustal composition, its north pole displays puzzling dark terrain. Abstract

The New Horizons mission was launched on 2006 January 19, and the spacecraft is heading for a flyby encounter with the Pluto system in the summer of 2015. The challenges associated with sending a spacecraft to Pluto in less than 10 years and performing an ambitious suite of scientific investigations at such large heliocentric distances (> 32 AU) are formidable and required the development of lightweight, low power, and highly sensitive instruments. This paper provides an overview of the New Horizons science payload, which is comprised of seven instruments. Alice provides spatially resolved ultraviolet spectroscopy. The Ralph instrument has two components: the Multicolor Visible Imaging Camera (MVIC), which performs panchromatic and color imaging, and the Linear Etalon Imaging Spectral Array (LEISA), which provides near-infrared spectroscopic mapping capabilities. The Radio Experiment (REX) is a component of the New Horizons telecommunications system that provides both occultation and radiometry capabilities. The Long Range Reconnaissance Imager (LORRI) provides high sensitivity, high spatial resolution optical imaging capabilities. The Solar Wind at Pluto (SWAP) instrument measures the density and speed of solar wind particles. The Pluto Energetic Particle Spectrometer Science Investigation (PEPSSI) measures energetic protons and CNO ions. Abstract

The Kuiper Belt is a distant region of the outer Solar System. On 1 January 2019, the New Horizons spacecraft flew close to (486958) 2014 MU69, a cold classical Kuiper Belt object approximately 30 kilometers in diameter. Such objects have never been substantially heated by the Sun and are therefore well preserved since their formation. We describe initial results from these encounter observations. MU69 is a bilobed contact binary with a flattened shape, discrete geological units, and noticeable albedo heterogeneity. However, there is little surface color or compositional heterogeneity. No evidence for satellites, rings or other dust structures, a gas coma, or solar wind interactions was detected. MU69's origin appears consistent with pebble cloud collapse followed by a low-velocity merger of its two lobes.

The Gravity Probe-B (GP-B) spacecraft, designed to test predictions of general relativity, will fly in the mid 1990s. It will carry four electrostatically suspended gyroscopes in a cryogenic environment and will have a drag-free control system to minimize disturbances on the gyroscopes. The Stanford Test of Equivalence Principle (STEP) spacecraft, to fly later, will carry a set of test masses under very similar conditions. The possibility of using differential measurements of the GP-B gyroscopes suspension forces and the STEP tests mass displacement readout to form single-axis gravity gradiometers is explored. It is shown that the noise in the suspension systems is sufficiently small in the relevant frequency range, and that enough information is collected to compensate for the spacecrafts' attitude motion. Finally, using Breakwell's flat-earth approximation, these experiments are compared to other geodesy experiments and predict the contribution they can make to the knowledge of the Earth's geopotential.

18. IMAGE, the First of the NEW MIDEX Missions

Abstract

The Imager for Magnetopause-to-Aurora Global Exploration (IMAGE) mission will be the first of the new Mediumclass Explorer (MIDEX) missions to fly. Led by Southwest Research Institute with oversight from the Explorers Project Office at NASA GSFC, IMAGE is the first satellite mission dedicated to imaging the Earth's magnetosphere. IMAGE will utilize a combination of ultraviolet and neutral atom imaging instruments plus an RF sounder to map and image the temporal and spatial features of the magnetosphere. The eight science sensors are mounted to a single deckplate. The deckplate is enveloped in an eight-sided spacecraft bus, 225 cm across the flats, developed by Lockheed Martin Missiles and Space Corporation. Constructed of laminated aluminum honeycomb panels, covered extensively by Gallium Arsenide solar cells, the spacecraft structure is designed to withstand the launch loads of a Delta 7326-9.5 ELV. Attitude control is via a single magnetic torque rod and passive nutation damper with aspect information provided by a star camera, sun sensor, and three-axis magnetometer. A single S-band transponder provides telemetry and command functionality. Interfaces between the self-contained payload and the spacecraft are limited to MIL-STD-1553 and power. This paper describes the IMAGE mission as well as the engineering details of the spacecraft.

32. A Preliminary Investigation of Myostatin Gene ( MSTN ) Variation in Red Deer ( Cervus elaphus ) and Its Implications for Venison Production in New Zealand.

Abstract

Myostatin (MSTN), also known as growth differentiation factor 8 (GDF-8), is a negative regulator of lean muscle tissue growth. Variation in the gene has been studied in many domesticated species, because of its potential to dramatically increase muscle mass. It has, however, not been investigated in red deer ( Cervus elaphus ). In this study, variation in MSTN intron 1 was investigated in 211 male New Zealand red deer, for which phenotypic measurements of M. Longissimus dorsi (eye muscle) (width, depth, and area, together with 12-month weight) were recorded. Two sequence variants (named A and B ) differing by one nucleotide (c.373 + 224) were identified in the intron 1 region of the gene resulting in three genotypes ( AA , AB, and BB ; frequencies of 63.5%, 30.8%, and 5.7%, respectively), but no association between this variation and any of the quantitative measurements was detected. These results suggest that the deer MSTN is less variable than for other livestock species and that its activity may be controlled to maintain a size-growth equilibrium.

Abstract

Pain is a multifaceted experience with physical, psychological, social and spiritual components. Dementia, which is often accompanied by impaired communication, complicates the assessment and treatment of pain. Although older people with dementia share the same age-related pathology as other older people, they do not experience the same access to pain relief as their cognitively-unimpaired counterparts. Tools have been developed to enhance self-reporting of pain by people with dementia and the objective observation of non-verbal signs of pain. The first step, however, is awareness that pain might be present and can be responsible for otherwise unexplained distress and behaviour change. Recognition of pain should trigger the appropriate and timely use of pain assessment tools. Pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical measures to relieve pain should be used as appropriate. Evaluation of the efficacy of these methods is needed on an ongoing basis. People living with dementia deserve to be listened to, no matter how they choose to express pain, and to have their pain minimised effectively and efficiently.

Abstract

Nurses caring for older patients across diverse settings will provide care for people with dementia approaching the end of their lives. Demographic changes mean that the number of people dying with dementia will increase, however nurses and other healthcare professionals may be unprepared to meet their needs. Factors that are essential to provide compassionate and dignified end of life care for people with dementia include effective communication with those with cognitive impairment and an awareness of likely causes of anxiety, fear and resistance to care when carrying out interventions. Accurate assessment and pain relief are required to ensure good end of life care. Knowledge of challenging and complex issues around maintenance of nutrition and hydration requirements, and communication skills to discuss the issues with families and carers are also required.
