Abstract Imbalance of proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory responses plays a crucial role in the progression of abdominal aortic aneurysms. ILF3, a known modulator of the innate immune response, is involved in cardiovascular diseases. This study aims to investigate the role of ILF3 in abdominal aortic aneurysm formation. Here, we use multi-omics analyzes, transgenic male mice, and multiplex immunohistochemistry to unravel the underlying involvement of ILF3 in abdominal aortic aneurysms. The results show that macrophage ILF3 deficiency attenuates abdominal aortic aneurysm progression, while elevated macrophage ILF3 exacerbates abdominal aortic aneurysm lesions. Mechanistically, we reveal that macrophagic ILF3 increases NF-κB activity by hastening the decay of p105 mRNA, leading to amplified inflammation in macrophages. Meanwhile, ILF3 represses the anti-inflammatory action by inhibiting the Keap1-Nrf2 signaling pathway through facilitating the ILF3/eIF4A1 complex-mediated enhancement of Keap1 translational efficiency. Moreover, Bardoxolone Methyl treatment alleviates the severity of abdominal aortic aneurysm lesions in the context of elevated ILF3 expression. Together, our findings underscore the significance of macrophage ILF3 in abdominal aortic aneurysm development and suggest its potential as a promising therapeutic target for abdominal aortic aneurysms.

Abstract During the operation of the ITER machine, hundreds of MW/Var of active and reactive power will be exchanged with the grid. The E‐STATCOM scheme composed of the Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) and split supercapacitor energy storage has been proposed to improve the power compensation performance of the existing reactive power compensation system in the previous study. However, one of the main technical challenges which is lack of research is to precharge all submodule capacitors and supercapacitors from zero to their nominal voltage values efficiently during a startup process. As the capacitance and operating voltage of supercapacitors are much different from capacitors in each submodule, the startup of E‐STATCOM is a more complicated process. To coordinate the energy exchange between submodule capacitors and supercapacitors, submodule capacitors and the grid, this paper presents an optimized four‐stage AC side startup strategy for the E‐STATCOM. The proposed method minimizes the use of current‐limiting resistors while suppressing the surge current in the zero‐voltage startup process of supercapacitors, in addition to optimizing the energy consumption. The pulse current charging, constant current charging and constant power charging strategies of supercapacitors are adopted in different charging stages, and the detailed coordinated control scheme between submodule capacitors and supercapacitors are described and analyzed. The effectiveness and performance of the proposed method are verified by simulation results and hardware‐in‐the‐loop (HIL) experiments.

Abstract Background The attentional network test (ANT) is widely used to evaluate the performance of three attentional networks: alerting, orienting and executive attention networks. This study aimed to investigate the characteristics of attention functions in HIV-negative patients with early forms of neurosyphilis (NS) and their correlation with abnormalities in brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Methods Thirty patients with early forms of NS, 31 patients with syphilis but without NS (Non-NS) and 35 healthy controls were recruited from an HIV-negative cohort between September 2020 and November 2022. The participants were evaluated with the ANT and the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). Brain MRI was performed in NS and Non-NS patients. Results No significant differences were observed in the MMSE scores among the three groups. However, patients with early forms of NS showed poorer performance in orienting and alerting functions than Non-NS group (F = 6.952, P = 0.011 and F = 8.794, P = 0.004, respectively); No significant difference was observed in executive function between the two groups (F = 0.001, P = 0.980). Multivariate analysis of variance using the Bonferroni post hoc test indicated that patients with NS exhibited less efficient orienting function (P = 0.023), and alerting function (P = 0.003) but not executive function (P = 0.99), compared to Non-NS patients. Abstract Background Osteoclast hyperactivation due to the pathological overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) stimulated by glucocorticoids (GCs) is one of the key drivers behind glucocorticoid-induced osteonecrosis of the femoral head (GIONFH). The insulin degrading enzyme (IDE), a conserved Zn2+ metallo-endopeptidase, facilitates the DNA binding of glucocorticoid receptor and plays a substantial role in steroid hormone-related signaling pathways. However, the potential role of IDE in the pathogenesis of GIONFH is yet undefined. Methods In this study, we employed network pharmacology and bioinformatics analysis to explore the impact of IDE inhibition on GIONFH with 6bK as an inhibitory agent. Further evidence was collected through in vitro osteoclastogenesis experiments and in vivo evaluations involving methylprednisolone (MPS)-induced GIONFH mouse model. Results Enrichment analysis indicated a potential role of 6bK in redox regulation amid GIONFH development. In vitro findings revealed that 6bK could attenuate GCs-stimulated overactivation of osteoclast differentiation by interfering with the transcription and expression of key osteoclastic genes (Traf6, Nfatc1, and Ctsk). The use of an H2DCFDA probe and subsequent WB assays introduced the inhibitory effects of 6bK on osteoclastogenesis, linked with the activation of the nuclear factor erythroid-derived 2-like 2 (Nrf2)-mediated antioxidant system. Furthermore, Micro-CT scans validated that 6bK could alleviate GIONFH in MPS-induced mouse models. Conclusions Our findings suggest that 6bK suppresses osteoclast hyperactivity in GCs-rich environment. This is achieved by reducing the accumulation of intracellular ROS via promoting the Nrf2-mediated antioxidant system, thus implying that IDE could be a promising therapeutic target for GIONFH.

Abstract The cycling stability of O3‐type NaNi1/3Fe1/3Mn1/3O2 (NFM) as a commercial cathode material for sodium ion batteries (SIBs) is still a challenge. In this study, the Ni/Fe/Mn elements are replaced successfully with tantalum (Ta) in the NFM lattice, which generated additional delocalized electrons and enhanced the binding ability between the transition metal and oxygen, resulting in suppressed lattice distortion during charging and discharging. This caused significant mitigation of voltage decay and improved cycle stability within the potential range of 2.0–4.2 V. The optimized Na(Ni1/3Fe1/3Mn1/3)0.97Ta0.03O2 sample achieved a reversible capacity of 162.6 mAh g−1 at a current rate of 0.1 C and 73.2 mAh g−1 at a high rate of 10 C. Additionally, the average charge/discharge potential retention reached 98% after 100 cycles, significantly mitigating the voltage decay. This work demonstrates a significant contribution towards the practical utilization of NFM cathodes in the SIBs energy storage field.

An elevated thunderstorm hail event occurred in Chenzhou and its vicinity in the Nanling region during March 22-23, 2023. A wide range of hail with diameters reaching up to 20 mm was reported, which was rare in elevated convection. In order to enhance the capability of forecasting and early warning of such hail events, this paper uses conventional meteorological observation data and SA-band dual-polarization radar products to analyze its weather conditions and dual-polarization radar echo characteristics. The results are as follows. (1) This event occurred in the cold area on the north side of the surface front, which was a typical elevated thunderstorm process. The hail-falling area was located 140 km to the north side of the surface front, and the large hail of 20 mm in diameter was caused by a supercell storm. (2) The storms that caused large hail in southern Chenzhou can be divided into four stages, which are the initial stage, the rapid development stage, the hail-falling stage, and the weakening stage. During the rapid development stage, the strong echo center increases rapidly and the vertical cumulative liquid water content (VIL) increases sharply. The differential reflectivity (ZDR) column extends to 4~5km above the 0 ℃ layer. A stronger updraft provides favorable conditions for hail development. During the hail-falling stage, with the rapid decrease of the strong echo center, the weak echo region (WER) disappears, and the height of the ZDR column decreases significantly. The values of ZDR and specific differential phase (KDP) gradually increase as the melting hail falls toward the ground. While the footprints of KDP correspond well with the hail-falling region. (3) The three-body scattering (TBSS) characteristics of large hail showed that the ZDR value at the root was large, which then decreased rapidly with the increase of radial distance, and the cross-correlation coefficient (CC) was significantly low. The sidelobal echo features of large hail indicate a low ZDR and low CC signature. These dual polarization features are key concerns for the large hail warning.

Abstract Backgrounds Radical resection is the most effective treatment for perihilar tumors. Biliary tract reconstruction after resection is one of the key steps in this surgery. Mucosa-to-mucosa cholangiojejunostomy is traditionally performed, in which the bile ducts at the resection margin are separately anastomosed to the jejunum. However, this approach is associated with long operative time and high risk of postoperative complications. The present study presents a modified technique of hepatojejunostomy and its outcomes. Methods The data of patients who underwent hepatojejunostomy using the modified technique at the Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery, Daping Hospital, Army Medical University, Chongqing, China, from January 2016 to December 2021, were retrospectively analyzed. Results A total of 13 patients with perihilar tumors underwent R0 resection and bilioenteric reconstruction using the modified hepatojejunostomy technique during the study period. During the operation, the alignment of the bile duct stumps was improved, the posterior wall of the anastomosis was reinforced, internal stents were placed in the smaller bile ducts, external stents were placed in the larger bile ducts, and hepatojejunostomy was performed using 4 − 0 prolene. No serious postoperative complications, such as death or bile leakage, occurred during the hospitalization. Furthermore, there were no cases of biliary stricture or cholangitis after the six-month follow-up period. Conclusion The modified hepatojejunostomy technique is a safe and effective technique of biliary reconstruction after the resection of perihilar tumors. This can be easily performed for difficult cases with multiple bile ducts that require reconstruction after resection.

The exposure of organic UV filters has been increasingly confirmed to induce adverse effects on humans. However, the critical exposure pathway and the vulnerable population of organic UV filters are not clearly identified. This paper attempts to evaluate the health risk of commonly used organic UV filters from various exposure routes based on comprehensive analysis strategy. The estimated daily intakes (EDI) and hazard quotient (HQ) values of organic UV filters through four pathways (dermal exposure, indoor dust, indoor air, and drinking water) for various age groups were determined. Although the total HQ values (0.01–0.4) from comprehensive exposure of organic UV filters were below risk threshold (1.0), infants were identified as the most vulnerable population, with EDI (75.71 ng/kg-bw/day) of 2–3 times higher than that of adults. Additionally, the total EDI values of individual exposure pathways were estimated and ranked as follows: indoor air (138.44 ng/kg-bw/day) > sunscreen application (37.2 ng/kg-bw/day) > drinking water (21.87 ng/kg-bw/day) > indoor dust (9.24 ng/kg-bw/day). Moreover, we successfully tailored the Sankey diagram to depict the EDI proportion of individual organic UV filters from four exposure pathways. It was noted that EHMC (ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate) and EHS (ethylhexyl salicylate) dominated the contribution of EDI (72 %) via indoor air exposure routes. This study serves as a crucial reference for enhancing public health risk awareness concerning organic UV filters, with a special focus on the vulnerable populations such as infants and children.

Ribonucleic acid is a crucial biomolecule in living organisms, with various types. To promote the research process of ribonucleic acid function, this study is for analyzing the utilization of heuristic algorithms on the ground of fusion dynamic programming in predicting the secondary structure of ribonucleic acid. Research on novel use of tree models for RNA secondary structure comparison, and use heuristic algorithms to optimize the multi branch structure comparison of tree models. Firstly, this study utilized dynamic programming algorithms to construct a comparison matrix and successfully found the backtracking path in the matrix. Meanwhile, for ensuring that the structural information of ribonucleic acid is not lost during the comparative analysis process, the study applies the idea of heuristic algorithms to calculate the optimal comparison between multi branched loops. Finally, the weights are adjusted using neural network algorithms to predict the optimal alignment structure. The results showed that the fusion dynamic programming heuristic algorithm achieved generalization performance of 0.928, 0.856, 0.842, and 0.793 on the target base data test sets of humans, mice, yeast, and spotted fish, respectively. Compared with the SimTree algorithm, the generalization performance has been improved by 15.13 %, 27.38 %, 27.77 %, and 38.88 %, respectively. In summary, the application of heuristic algorithms integrating dynamic programming in predicting the secondary structure of ribonucleic acid has good predictive performance. This has reference value for a deeper understanding of the structure and function relationship of ribonucleic acid.

Background: Increased osteoclast activity constitutes the primary etiology of excessive bone erosion in postmenopausal osteoporosis. ERp57, otherwise referred to as protein disulfide isomerase A3 (PDIA3), plays a crucial role in the regulation of intracellular calcium signaling. This is documented to exert a profound impact on osteoclast differentiation and functionality. Methods: To ascertain the potential role of ERp57 in disease progression, prevention, and treatment, network pharmacology and bioinformatics analyses were conducted in relation to postmenopausal osteoporosis and ERp57 inhibitor (Loc14). Then, subsequent experimental verifications were employed in vitro on osteoclast and osteoblast, and in vivo on ovariectomy (OVX) mice models. Results: Multiple enrichment analyses suggested that the “calcium signaling pathway” may constitute a potential avenue for therapeutic intervention by Loc14 in the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis. In vitro experiments demonstrated inhibition of ERp57 could block osteoclast differentiation and function by interfering with the expression of osteoclast marker genes (Traf6, Nfatc1, and Ctsk). Further mechanisms studies based on calcium imaging, qPCR, and WB established that ERp57 inhibitor (Loc14) could obstruct calcium oscillation in osteoclast precursor cells (OPCs) by limiting the entry sources of cytosolic Ca2+ and interfering with calmodulin/calcineurin/Nfatc1 pathway. Evidence from Micro-CT scanning and double calcein labeling confirmed that the application of Loc14 in vivo could alleviate bone loss and partially reversed the osteogenic impairment caused by OVX in mice. Conclusions: Our findings proved the suppressive effects of Loc14 on osteoclastogenesis via attenuating calcium oscillation and associated singling pathways, providing ERp57 as a potential therapeutic target for postmenopausal osteoporosis.

Observation of coral spawning times is valuable to detect spawning patterns and identify the potential mechanisms behind coral reproduction. Although large amount of data on global coral spawning records have become available over the past decades, information on coral spawning in the northern South China Sea remains scarce. In this study, we investigated the spawning patterns of scleractinian corals in Luhuitou fringing reef, Hainan Island, China, from 2009 to 2021 in relation to lunar cycles (month and day). The spawning times of 22 coral species from five genera (Acropora, Montipora, Platygyra, Dipsastraea, and Galaxea) within three families (Acroporidae, Merulinidae, and Euphylliidae) were recorded, with spawning occurring from lunar February to May 2009–2021. Recorded spawning events started at a period of increasing seawater temperature. Acropora, the most documented genus, spawned between lunar February and April, but primarily in lunar March. Importantly, the spawning time of Acropora was delayed for one lunar month in 2016 most likely due to a rapid decrease in monthly mean seawater temperature in lunar February. Spawning lunar days before, on or after full moon of corals in the Luhuitou Reef, including those of the Acropora species, were highly variable between years even for the same species. No predictable pattern of spawning times can thus be detected. Nonetheless, our results fill up an information gap on coral spawning patterns in the northern South China Sea that may be useful for further understanding of the reproductive biology of scleractinian corals throughout the Indo–West Pacific.

Airborne microorganisms, an emerging global health threat, have attracted extensive studies. However, few attentions have been paid to the seasonal distribution of airborne pathogens, in particular their associations with antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). To this end, two-week daily PM2.5 samples were consecutively collected from Nanchang in four seasons, and the human-to-human pathogens were screened based on high-throughput sequencing. The results showed that there were 20 pathogenic taxa in PM2.5 in Nanchang, and the highest relative abundance of pathogens was observed in winter (5.84%), followed by summer (3.51%), autumn (2.66%), and spring (1.80%). Abstract In this study, we conducted an assembly and analysis of the organelle genomes of Aconitum carmichaelii. Our investigation encompassed the examination of organelle genome structures, gene transfer events, and the environmental selection pressures affecting A. carmichaelii. The results revealed distinct evolutionary patterns in the organelle genomes of A. carmichaelii. Especially, the plastome exhibited a more conserved structure but a higher nucleotide substitution rate (NSR), while the mitogenome displayed a more complex structure with a slower NSR. Through homology analysis, we identified several instances of unidirectional protein-coding genes (PCGs) transferring from the plastome to the mitogenome. However, we did not observe any events which genes moved from the mitogenome to the plastome. Additionally, we observed multiple transposable element (TE) fragments in the organelle genomes, with both organelles showing different preferences for the type of nuclear TE insertion. Divergence time estimation suggested that rapid differentiation occurred in Aconitum species approximately 7.96 million years ago (Mya). This divergence might be associated with the reduction in CO2 levels and the significant uplift of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) during the late Miocene. Selection pressure analysis indicated that the dN/dS values of both organelles were less than 1, suggested that organelle PCGs were subject to purification selection. However, we did not detect any positively selected genes (PSGs) in Subg. Aconitum and Subg. Lycoctonum. This observation further supports the idea that stronger negative selection pressure on organelle genes in Aconitum results in a more conserved amino acid sequence. In conclusion, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of organelle evolution in Aconitum species and provides a foundation for future research on the genetic mechanisms underlying the structure and function of the Aconitum plastome and mitogenome.

Abstract Chronic rotator cuff injuries (CRCIs) still present a great challenge for orthopaedics surgeons. Many new therapeutic strategies are developed to facilitate repair and improve the healing process. However, there is no reliable animal model for chronic rotator cuff injury research. To present a new valuable rat model for future chronic rotator cuff injuries (CRCIs) repair studies, and describe the changes of CRCIs on the perspectives of histology, behavior and MRI. Sixty male Wistar rats were enrolled and underwent surgery of the left shoulder joint for persistent subacromial impingement. They were randomly divided into experimental group (n = 30, a 3D printed PEEK implant shuttled into the lower surface of the acromion) and sham operation group (n = 30, insert the same implant, but remove it immediately). Analyses of histology, behavior, MRI and inflammatory pain-related genes expression profiles were performed to evaluate the changes of CRCIs. After 2-weeks running, the rats in the experimental group exhibited compensatory gait patterns to protect the injured forelimb from loading after 2-weeks running. After 8-weeks running, the rats in the experimental group showed obvious CRCIs pathological changes: (1) acromion bone hyperplasia and thickening of the cortical bone; (2) supraspinatus muscle tendon of the humeral head: the bursal-side tendon was torn and layered with disordered structure, forming obvious gaps; the humeral-side tendon is partially broken, and has a neatly arranged collagen. Partial fat infiltration is found. The coronal T2-weighted images showed that abnormal tendon-to-bone junctions of the supraspinatus tendon. The signal intensity and continuity were destroyed with contracted tendon. At the nighttime, compared with the sham operation group, the expression level of IL-1β and COX-2 increased significantly (P = 0063, 0.0005) in the experimental group. The expression of COX-2 in experimental group is up-regulated about 1.5 times than that of daytime (P = 0.0011), but the expression of IL-1β, TNF-a, and NGF are all down-regulated (P = 0.0146, 0.0232, 0.0161). This novel rat model of chronic rotator cuff injuries has the similar characteristics with that of human shoulders. And it supplies a cost-effective, reliable animal model for advanced tissue engineered strategies and future therapeutic strategies.

Abstract Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) ranks as one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Despite the prominence and effectiveness of kinase-target therapies in NSCLC treatment, these drugs are suitable for and beneficial to a mere ~30% of NSCLC patients. Consequently, the need for novel strategies addressing NSCLC remains pressing. Deubiquitinases (DUBs), a group of diverse enzymes with well-defined catalytic sites that are frequently overactivated in cancers and associated with tumorigenesis and regarded as promising therapeutic targets. Nevertheless, the mechanisms by which DUBs promote NSCLC remain poorly understood. Through a global analysis of the 97 DUBs’ contribution to NSCLC survival possibilities using The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database, we found that high expression of Josephin Domain-containing protein 2 (JOSD2) predicted the poor prognosis of patients. Depletion of JOSD2 significantly impeded NSCLC growth in both cell/patient-derived xenografts in vivo. Mechanically, we found that JOSD2 restricts the kinase activity of LKB1, an important tumor suppressor generally inactivated in NSCLC, by removing K6-linked polyubiquitination, an action vital for maintaining the integrity of the LKB1-STRAD-MO25 complex. Notably, we identified the first small-molecule inhibitor of JOSD2, and observed that its pharmacological inhibition significantly arrested NSCLC proliferation in vitro/in vivo. Our findings highlight the vital role of JOSD2 in hindering LKB1 activity, underscoring the therapeutic potential of targeting JOSD2 in NSCLC, especially in those with inactivated LKB1, and presenting its inhibitors as a promising strategy for NSCLC treatment.

Synchronous condensers (SCs) are generally used at the receiving-end stations of ultra-high-voltage direct current (UHVDC) transmission systems due to their strong reactive power support and flexible regulation of reactive power according to the interconnected grids operating conditions. In this paper, different starting control schemes of a SC integrated power grid are investigated providing four main contributions: 1) The principle of reactive power support of the SC on the interconnected power grid is analytically studied, providing the establishment of mathematical models. 2) Four different starting control schemes are developed for the initialization and SC integration, i.e. in Scheme 1, a preset initial falling speed is directly utilized without initialization; in Scheme 2, a black start sequential control approach with a static frequency converter (SFC) is proposed; in Scheme 3, PI/PD/PID controllers are respectively applied for the excitation device at the speed-falling stage; in Scheme 4, a pre-insertion approach of an energy absorption component with R/L/RL is utilized to suppress the surges at the SC integration instant. 3) The dynamic behaviors of four different starting schemes at specific operating stages are evaluated. 4) The success rate of SC integration is analyzed to evaluate starting control performance. Performance of the SC interconnected system with four different starting control schemes is evaluated in the time-domain simulation environment PSCAD/EMTDC™. The results prove the superiority of the proposed starting control approach in Scheme 4.

Abstract Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a leading cause of irreversible vision loss in working-age populations. Fat mass and obesity-associated protein (FTO) is an N6-methyladenosine (m6A) demethylase that demethylates RNAs involved in energy homeostasis, though its influence on DR is not well studied. Herein, we detected elevated FTO expression in vitreous fibrovascular membranes of patients with proliferative DR. FTO promoted cell cycle progression and tip cell formation of endothelial cells (ECs) to facilitate angiogenesis in vitro, in mice, and in zebrafish. FTO also regulated EC-pericyte crosstalk to trigger diabetic microvascular leakage, and mediated EC–microglia interactions to induce retinal inflammation and neurodegeneration in vivo and in vitro. Mechanistically, FTO affected EC features via modulating CDK2 mRNA stability in an m6A-YTHDF2-dependent manner. FTO up-regulation under diabetic conditions was driven by lactate-mediated histone lactylation. FB23-2, an inhibitor to FTO’s m6A demethylase activity, suppressed angiogenic phenotypes in vitro. To allow for systemic administration, we developed a nanoplatform encapsulating FB23-2 and confirmed its targeting and therapeutic efficiency in mice. Collectively, our study demonstrates that FTO is important for EC function and retinal homeostasis in DR, and warrants further investigation as a therapeutic target for DR patients.

A high front-to-back ratio (FBR) microstrip patch antenna with small ground plane size is proposed and studied in this article. In order to suppress the serious back lobe brought by such a small ground, a hybrid loading technique consisting of coupled branch (CB) and resistor-loaded ground slot (RLGS) is introduced. Through the hybrid loading, extra magnetic currents on the ground are excited, by which the backward radiation of the original patch could be cancelled. In addition, the joint regulation mechanism of CB and RLGS is expressed as an equivalent circuit model, which provides more physical insight. The realized FBR of the proposed antenna reaches over 38 dB, as a result, the specific absorption rate (SAR) of the antenna under wearable conditions is suppressed, and the radiation efficiency is nearly unaffected by the human body, which is highly demanded by wearable devices.

ABSTRACTIn this study, Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy components were prepared using wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM). Through multi-scale characterisation technology, performance testing and slow strain rate tensile (SSRT) testing, the microstructure, mechanical properties and stress corrosion cracking (SCC) susceptibility of WAAM Al-Zn-Mg-Cu components were studied, revealing the generation mechanism of inhomogeneity and anisotropy. The results show that with the increase of WAAM thermal cycles, the matrix precipitates (MPs), grain boundary precipitates (GBPs) and precipitation-free zones (PFZ) evolve in different paths and increase to varying degrees, resulting in performance decrease and increase in stress corrosion susceptibility, so the inhomogeneity is mainly attributed to differences in precipitated phases. The Inter-layer inclined to the scanning direction and the Inner-layer inclined to the building direction led to anisotropy in tensile strength and SCC behaviour, so the anisotropy is mainly attributed to the grain orientation and fracture mode.

A bony Bankart lesion is a condition where the labroligamentous complex is detached from the anterior glenoid rim, often accompanied by a fracture. It is a common occurrence found in up to 70% of traumatic shoulder dislocations. Arthroscopic surgery has become the mainstream approach for treating this condition. However, the commonly used techniques, such as labrum alone, transosseous, and double-row, can encounter difficulties passing sutures and may cause damage to the surrounding tissues, especially when dealing with large bony fragments. In this technical note, we describe our preferred technique for fixing bony Bankart lesions, which involves fixing the bony Bankart fragment through the bone tunnel using an all-suture anchor. The surgery is performed with the patient in the lateral decubitus position. Our technique offers a reliable and effective approach to treat bony Bankart lesions while minimizing the risks of complications associated with conventional techniques.

BackgroundPolycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is both a common endocrine syndrome and a metabolic disorder that results in harm to the reproductive system and whole-body metabolism. This study aimed to investigate differences in the serum metabolic profiles of patients with PCOS compared with healthy controls, in addition to investigating the effects of compound oral contraceptive (COC) treatment in patients with PCOS.Materials and methods50 patients with PCOS and 50 sex-matched healthy controls were recruited. Patients with PCOS received three cycles of self-administered COC treatment. Clinical characteristics were recorded, and the laboratory biochemical data were detected. We utilized ultra-performance liquid chromatography–high-resolution mass spectrometry to study the serum metabolic changes between patients with PCOS, patients with PCOS following COC treatment, and healthy controls.ResultPatients with PCOS who received COC treatment showed significant improvements in serum sex hormone levels, a reduction in luteinising hormone levels, and a significant reduction in the levels of biologically active free testosterone in the blood. Differential metabolite correlation analysis revealed differences between PCOS and healthy control groups in N-tetradecanamide, hexadecanamide, 10E,12Z-octadecadienoic acid, and 13-HOTrE(r); after 3 months of COC treatment, there were significant differences in benzoic acid, organic acid, and phenolamides. Using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry to analyse blood serum in each group, the characteristic changes in PCOS were metabolic disorders of amino acids, carbohydrates, and purines, with significant changes in the levels of total cholesterol, uric acid, phenylalanine, aspartic acid, and glutamate.ConclusionFollowing COC treatment, improvements in sex hormone levels, endocrine factor levels, and metabolic levels were better than in the group of PCOS patients receiving no COC treatment, indicating that COC treatment for PCOS could effectively regulate the levels of sex hormones, endocrine factors, and serum metabolic profiles.

BackgroundThe pathogenesis of vitiligo remains elusive. Emerging evidence suggests that vitiligo is an immune-mediated disorder, in which a plethora of immune cells play pivotal roles. However, the association between circulating immune cells and vitiligo continues to be enigmatic.Materials and methodsWe extracted single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with immune circulating cells at a genome-wide significance level from the BLOOD CELL CONSORTIUM’s genome-wide association study (GWAS) dataset. Summary data for 385,801 cases of vitiligo were obtained from a large-scale Finnish genome-wide association study (ncases=292, ncontrols=385,509). The inverse variance weighted (IVW) method was employed as the primary analytical approach for Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis. Additionally, heterogeneity was assessed using Cochran’s Q value, and horizontal pleiotropy was evaluated using MR-Egger Mendelian Randomization Pleiotropy RESidual Sum and Outlier and leave-one-out analyses.ResultsThe risk of vitiligo was found to increase with the elevation of 4 circulating immune cells, as evidenced by the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs): basophils (OR=1.81; 95% CI: 1.01–3.24, p=0.0450), monocytes (OR=1.67; 95% CI: 1.23–2.26, p=0.0009), eosinophils (OR=1.78; 95% CI: 1.22–2.59, p=0.0028), and neutrophils (OR=1.65; 95% CI: 1.08–2.54, p=0.0208). After removing outliers, the sensitivity analysis of the above indicators did not show heterogeneity and pleiotropy.ConclusionOur findings illuminate the association between circulating immune cells and vitiligo, offering insights that could guide clinical practices in the treatment of vitiligo.

Abstract To investigate the effects of neutrophil elastase inhibitor (sivelestat sodium) on gastrointestinal function in sepsis. A reanalysis of the data from previous clinical trials conducted at our center was performed. Septic patients were divided into either the sivelestat group or the non‐sivelestat group. The gastrointestinal dysfunction score (GIDS), feeding intolerance (FI) incidence, serum levels of intestinal barrier function and inflammatory biomarkers were recorded. The clinical severity and outcome variables were also documented. A total of 163 septic patients were included. The proportion of patients with GIDS ≥2 in the sivelestat group was reduced relative to that in the non‐sivelestat group (9.6% vs. 22.5%, p = 0.047) on the 7th day of intensive care unit (ICU) admission. The FI incidence was also remarkably reduced in the sivelestat group in contrast to that in the non‐sivelestat group (21.2% vs. 37.8%, p = 0.034). Furthermore, the sivelestat group had fewer days of FI [4 (3, 4) vs. 5 (4–6), p = 0.008]. Sediment bacterial communities are decisive drivers of nutrient cycling processes in aquaculture ecosystems and are readily affected by surrounding environmental factors. However, the knowledge of sediment nutrient accumulations and bacterial community structure is limited in the emerging polyculture systems. Herein, we investigated the profiles of sediment properties and bacterial communities in six typical polyculture ponds and primarily explored the influence of total nitrogen and phosphorus on the bacterial species and diversity. In almost all sediment samples, Proteobacteria, Chloroflexi, and Bacteroides were the dominant species at the phylum level, and the five most abundant bacterial genera were Sulfurovum, Woeseia, Ilumatobacter, Robiginitalea, and Cyanobium_PCC-6307. A clear different bacterial community was observed with the most dominant bacterial phylum Firmicutes and the lowest bacterial diversity in TZ1 pond sediment; meanwhile, the TZ1 pond also showed the highest TN and TP concentrations. Notably, sediments from WZ1 and WZ2 ponds in low-latitude regions exhibited higher bacterial richness and diversity. Based on Pearson’s correlation analysis, bacterial α-diversity indices showed significant negative correlation with sediment TP content, and TN content contributed the most to the abundance of sediment dominant bacterial genus, indicating that the bacterial community is highly associated with sediment nutrient concentrations. Moreover, co-occurrence network analysis further revealed some keystone taxa that exhibited high correlations with other bacterial species, especially the high-abundance genus Robiginitalea bridging a large number of connections. Compared to traditional mono-mariculture pattern, our study provided direct evidence of lower nutrient loadings and different bacterial communities in the polyculture ponds. This could assist polyculture practitioners in developing effective strategies for detailed nutritional management.

Abstract Background The development and progression of cancer cachexia are connected to systemic inflammation and physical performance. However, few relevant studies have reported the survival outcomes prediction of systemic inflammation and physical performance in patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) cachexia. This study investigated the prognostic prediction value of systemic inflammation and performance status in patients with CRC cachexia. Methods This multicentre cohort study prospectively collected 905 patients with CRC (58.3% males, 59.3 ± 11.5 years old). Cancer cachexia was diagnosed according to the 2011 Fearon Cachexia Diagnostic Consensus. The prognostic value of systematic inflammatory indicators was determined using the area under the curve, concordance index, and multivariate survival analysis. Performance status was evaluated with Eastern Coopertive Oncology Group performance score (ECOG‐PS). Survival data were analysed using univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses. Results The area under the curve, concordance index and survival analysis showed that C‐reactive protein (CRP), lymphocyte to CRP ratio (LCR) and CRP to albumin ratio (CAR) were more stable and consistent with the survival of patients with CRC, both in non‐cachexia and cachexia populations. Among patients with CRC cachexia, high inflammation [low LCR, hazard ratio (HR) 95% confidence interval (95% CI) = 3.33 (2.08–5.32); high CAR, HR (95% CI) = 2.92 (1.88–4.55); high CRP, HR (95% CI) = 3.12 (2.08–4.67)] indicated a worse prognosis, compared with non‐cachexia patients [low LCR, HR (95% CI) = 2.28 (1.65–3.16); high CAR, HR (95% CI) = 2.36 (1.71–3.25); high CRP, HR (95% CI) = 2.58 (1.85–3.60)]. Similarly, among patients with CRC cachexia, high PS [ECOG‐PS 2, HR (95% CI) = 1.61 (1.04–2.50); ECOG‐PS 3/4, HR (95% CI) = 2.91 (1.69–5.00]) indicated a worse prognosis, compared with patients with CRC without cachexia [ECOG‐PS 2, HR (95% CI) = 1.28 (0.90–1.81); ECOG‐PS 3/4, HR (95% CI) = 2.41 (1.32–4.39]). Patients with CRC cachexia with an ECOG‐PS score of 2 or 3–4 and a high inflammation had a shorter median survival time, compared with patients with an ECOG‐PS score of 0/1 and a low inflammation. Conclusions The systemic inflammatory markers LCR, CAR and CRP have stable prognostic values in patients with CRC. The ECOG‐PS may be an independent risk factor for CRC. Combined evaluation of systemic inflammation and ECOG‐PS in patients with CRC cachexia could provide a simple survival prediction.

Abstract Climate change, such as temperature and precipitation changes, is becoming increasingly obvious, and in this context, planting designs need to urgently consider future climate change in advance. A field experiment was conducted in Beijing, China, where the future precipitation is predicted to increase, and extra irrigation was used to simulate the future precipitation increase. The species richness of sown meadows, including spontaneous plants and sown plants, and the adaptive strategies of the communities were recorded under different types of design models and substrates. The results showed that precipitation increased the diversity of sown plants and resource-demanding spontaneous plants but had no significant effect on the dry matter content of the entire community of species. Moreover, the interactions among precipitation and substrate, especially the design models, were significant. Of the models, the three-layer model had the highest species richness and least invasive plants. In addition, increased precipitation significantly changed the functional strategy of the plant community away from ruderals and towards competitor-stress tolerant species. This study provides guidance for the design and management of naturalistic plant communities under climate change.

Independent lightning rods are often installed in substation grounding systems for lightning protection. The concentrated discharge channel formed when a lightning current flows to the ground through a grounding electrode will cause electromagnetic interference to the directly buried secondary cable. And the three-dimensional structure of the discharge channel will affect the transient electromagnetic field distribution, thereby affecting the electromagnetic transients on cable shields. In order to explore the influence of soil discharge phenomena on the electromagnetic interference of the directly buried secondary cable, in this paper, we carried out experiments on cables in two different grounding modes, single-ended and double-ended grounding, and captured image of soil discharge channels. The results show that the cable grounding mode will affect the coupling mode that causes the shielding layer current. The relative spatial position of the soil discharge channel and the cable has a significant impact on the magnitude of the shielding layer current under both grounding modes. The water content and salt content of the soil also have different degrees of influence on the coupling current of the shielding layer in different grounding modes.
