Objectives: Endometrial endometrioid carcinoma (EEC) is the most encountered subtype of endometrial cancer (EC). Our study aimed to investigate the factors affecting recurrence in patients with stage 1A and 1B EEC. Material and methods: Our study included 284 patients diagnosed with the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics stage 1A/1B EEC in our center from 2010 to 2018. The clinicopathological characteristics of the patients were obtained retrospectively from their electronic files. Results: The median age of the patients was 60 years (range 31–89). The median follow-up time of the patients was 63.6 months (range 3.3–185.6). Twenty-two (7.74%) patients relapsed during follow-up. Among the relapsed patients, 59.1% were at stage 1A ECC, and 40.9% were at stage 1B. In our study, the one-, three-, and five-year recurrence-free survival (RFS) rates were 98.9%, 95.4%, and 92.9%, respectively. In the multivariate analysis, grade and tumor size were found to be independent parameters of RFS in all stage 1 EEC patients. Furthermore, the Ki-67 index was found to affect RFS in stage 1A EEC patients, and tumor grade affected RFS in stage 1B EEC patients. In the time-dependent receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, the statistically significant cut-off values were determined for tumor size and Ki-67 index in stage 1 EEC patients. Conclusions: Stage 1-EEC patients in the higher risk group in terms of tumor size, Ki-67, and grade should be closely monitored for recurrence. Defining the prognostic factors for recurrence in stage 1 EEC patients may lead to changes in follow-up algorithms.

Platin/5-fluorouracil (PF) combination chemotherapy is the main treatment modality for metastatic gastric cancer patients. Third drug addition to PF is a controversial issue. The aim of this study was to evaluate the predictive role of tumor localization and histopathology on choosing three- or two-drug combination regimens. Methods: This study was designed as a hospital-based retrospective observational case-series study. A total of 516 patients with advanced gastric cancer has been treated at eight different oncology centers in Turkey between 2006 and 2016. Laboratory results and demographic data were collected and analyzed. Results: The median patient age was 59 years (range 25-85). Proximal intestinal and distal intestinal cancers were found in 357 (69.2 %) and 159 (30.8 %) patients, respectively. 5-fluorouracil (5FU) and cisplatin (PF) and cisplatin+5FU+docetaxel (PFtax, also known as DCF) were administered to 240 (46.5%) and 276 (53.5%) patients, respectively. Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is known to undergo metastasis during diagnosis and after a period of primary therapy. Although the lung, liver and spleen are presented as the most metastatic organs, RCC rarely metastasizes to thescalp. Likewise, ulceration and infected scalp lesions should be excised with no lesions and RCC should be evaluated with immunohistochemistry with the suspicion of RCC. Here we presented a rare case of metastatic RCC ulceronodular lesion that led to a deep anemia of dense hemorrhage in the left temporal region 10 years after nephrectomy and discussed the nature of RCC skin metastasis in the light of current literature. For instance, Hamdi Suat took his place in the international medical literature with his article that was published in 1927 based on the scientific data he obtained at his pathology laboratory that he established in 1925. Kazim Ismail published his original work called "The Causes and Treatment of Cancer" in 1926. Moreover, Kazim Ismail published a translated book with the title "Diagnosis of Primary Cancer" with Omer Vasfi in 1928. In addition, Esad Rasit translated and published a book called "The Science of Internal Diseases, Infectious Diseases: Cancer, Care" in the same year. At the Third Turkish National Medical Congress, physicians from different medical specialties dealing with cancer came together and discussed it thematically. Prior to the congress, six articles on cancer, written by German physicians, were published in the special issue of "The Journal of Treatment Notes". Furthermore, Ali Riza and Kazim Ismail handed out the first book on cancer written in Turkish with the Latin alphabet, called "Surgically Treated Skin Cancers", to the physicians participating in the congress for free. Saim Ali Dilemre and Mehmet Lutfi wrote the congress' report on cancer. Annually, more than ten million new cancer cases are diagnosed, and more than six million deaths occur due to cancer. Nonetheless, over 80% of human cancer may be preventable through proper nutrition. Numerous nutritional compounds are effective in preventing cancer. Selenium and zinc are essential micronutrients that have important roles in reducing oxidative stress and protecting DNA from the attack of reactive oxygen species. Selenium is an essential trace element that possesses several functions in many cellular processes for cancer prevention. Meanwhile, zinc may have protective effects on tumor initiation and progression, and it is an essential cofactor of several mammalian proteins. Results show that both selenium and zinc provide an effective progression of DNA repair system; thus, cancer development that originated from DNA damage is decreased. Results mostly focus on the separate effects of these two elements on different cell types, tissues, and organs, and their combined effects are largely unknown. This review aimed to emphasize the joint role of selenium and zinc specifically on DNA repair for cancer prevention.

Introduction : Small cell lung cancer(SCLC) is the most aggressive form of lung cancer. Recent studies showedthat inflammation plays an important role in carcinogenesis. In this study, we investigated the survival impact ofpre-treatment multiple inflammatory and hematological blood parameters and their relation between each other inSCLC.Material and Method: This retrospective study enrolled 110 SCLC patients. The patients underwent platinumbased combination chemotherapy as a first-line treatment between 2012-2015. Untreated patients' hematologicaltests were taken into evaluation at initial diagnosis. Neutrophil, lymphocyte, platelet, hemoglobin (HGB), meancorpuscular volume (MCV), and mean platelet volume (MPV) values were collected. neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio(NLR)and the platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), immune-inflammation index (SII) were calculated. Overall survivalof patients (OS) was calculated until to January 2017. All analyses were conducted by SPSS v23.0 statisticalsoftware.Results: Favorable prognostic factors were found to be age 65 years, limited stage, presence of curativeradyotherapy and good performans status. In univariate analysis showed that neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio(NLR)5, and mean corpuscular volume (MCV)85 fl predicted better survival outcomes in extensive-stage SCLCpatients. In our study; patients at extensive-stage with platelet-lymphocyte ratio(PLR)250 or systemic immuneinflammation index (SII)1,600x109/L had longer overall survival (OS) but statistical significance could not beachieved. COX regression analyses showed that age (65 years), NLR5, and MCV85 fl were independentunfavorable prognostic factors for OS in extensive-stage. However mean platelet volume(MPV), MPV/plateletratio and hemoglobin have no effect on survival in all stage SCLC patients.Conclusion: Our study demonstrates that NLR and MCV could help to predict poor prognosis in extensive-stage,treatment naive SCLC patients. WOS: 000412418500003 The aim of this study was to evaluate the information in the book about the usage of radium for treatment purposes in the light of current scientific knowledge by abbreviating and translating it into modern-day Turkish. With this study, Turkish Medical History will acquire a new source document. First, the book that was the subject of this work, was reviewed by the researchers. After the first evaluation, it was re-read by an academician, who is an expert in Turkish Language and Literature, and it was abbreviated in order to make it more articulate. Finally, after this process, the obtained information was interpreted in the light of current scientific knowledge. The book, which was written by a Turkish physician, covers utilization areas of radium, mechanism of effect and comparison with x-ray treatment. Written in the Young Turkish Republic about "modern medicine" practices, the book is considerably detailed and shows parallels with other practices of that period in the world. In addition to the brief theoretical information about the atom and radium, the application methods of radium treatment are covered by the book. Summarized information about the benefits and the risks of the treatment and warnings related to the practice can also be found in the book. The common feature of the medical books about x-ray and radium written almost a century ago is that they cover the theoretical information or the story of the discovery of x-ray and radium. On the other hand, "Radyumla Tedavi Esaslari (The Principles of Radium Treatment)" was a unique pioneering work of its time covering the utilization methods of radium and x-ray, the advantages and disadvantages of these methods and the comparison of the two methods. It also discusses the administration methods of x-ray and radium, the pros and cons of these methods and the comparison of the two methods made it exclusive.

Methods: An 18-item questionnaire survey was applied in cancer patients and their relatives. Results: A total of 1106 patients (male, 37.3%, and female, 62.7%) and their relatives were included in the study. The responders had been using internet to obtain health information about oncological diseases, once a month (34.2%), 1-2 times a week (27.4%) or 2-3 times a month (21.9%). After diagnosis of cancer was made, participants more frequently (64.4%) investigated health-related issues, while 64.9% of them considered internet as an important search tool, and 16.7% of them had thought to give up cancer therapy under the influence of inter net information. Some (33.1%) participants had used herbal medicine, and 16.7% of them had learnt these herbal products from internet Still 12.7% of them had not questioned the accuracy of internet information, while 26.9% of them indicated that they had not shared the internet information about cancer with their physicians, and 13 % of them searched information in internet without asking their physicians. Conclusion: Cancer patients and their relatives showed a higher tendency to use health-related internet information which may mislead them, and can result in treatment incompliance. Health professionals should offer evidence-based information to the patients and their relatives through internet.

WOS: 000369355100024 PubMed ID: 26854455 Purpose: To investigate the prognostic value of weight loss before diagnosis in patients with advanced stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) treated with first-line chemotherapy. Methods: A total of 81 NSCLC patients with stages IIIB/IV were included in this retrospective cross-sectional study. Study variables were weight loss in the last 3 months before diagnosis, patient demographic, clinical and laboratory characteristics and histological features of the tumor before administering first-line chemotherapy. Then, the patients were stratified into 4 groups based on their weight loss before being diagnosed with NSCLC. Results: The patients were predominantly male (68%), with a smoking history (62%), 5 to 10 kg weight loss in the last 3 months (31%), and had metastatic disease (64%) and adenocarcinoma (40%) at the time of diagnosis. On the other hand, most of the patients with 5 to 10 kg weight loss in the last 3 months before diagnosis had squamous cell carcinoma (44%), stage IV disease (56%), and the first disease progression was in the brain (64%). Pre-diagnosis weight loss had a negative impact on progression-free survival (PFS), independent from weight loss during first-line chemotherapy, but no such effect was noticed on overall survival (OS). Conclusions: Pre-diagnosis weight loss was found to have a negative impact on PFS in patients with NSCLC treated by first-line chemotherapy. Similar studies in larger patient series are warranted.

The most important obstacles for clinical trials in Turkey may be listed as financial problems, difficulties of working conditions, time limitation due to work intensity, inadequate experienced/trained man-power, absence of assistance team at all steps of a scientific trial, difficulties faced during project planning and ethics committee submissions, and lack of motivation. In this article, we, as young oncologists, aimed to discuss the place of Turkey in areas of scientific and clinical trials in the world; underlying causes for inadequate number, type and quality of national studies and possible solution proposals in our country.

Cutaneous metastasis may occur synchronously or metatochronously. In the present case, the patient had chronic lymphocytic leukemia, which was being treated with an alkylating agent (chlorambucil) when the patient developed skin metastasis from gallbladder adenocarcinoma during post- cholecystectomy follow-up. Given the fact that secondary malignancies occur in chronic lymphocytic leukemia; this clinical setting warrants attention. We aimed to discuss secondary malignancy in chronic lymphocytic leukemia patients and gallbladder adenocarcinoma with skin metastasis, based on a review of the literature and the presented case.
