In-Person Game

We consider signals of opportunity. These are already existing signals that can be used for a different purpose than originally intended. Two types of such signals are discussed: music and signals from aircraft in the ADS-B standard. Due to the masking effect of human hearing, sounds that are close in frequency to a loud sound are not perceived. We exploit this effect to transmit data in music without the data transmission being perceived as disturbing to listeners. A smartphone can record the music with the microphone and decode the embedded data again. This allows communication over several meters without any configuration. By optimizing the system for a high data rate, we achieve over 900 bits/s without the embedded data being very noticeable to listeners. Additionally, we also try to optimize the method to completely hide the data from listeners and achieve data rates of up to 400 bit/s. The second type of signals we are looking at are messages transmitted by aircraft in the ADS-B standard. Aircraft regularly transmit information for air traffic surveillance, including information about an aircraft's identity, position, and velocity. However, these messages can also be used to determine the position of a mobile receiver. Through a system of distributed receivers, messages sent by aircraft are collected on a server. To determine the position of a mobile receiver, we search for the location where the received signal matches best with the actual messages sent by the aircraft. This method does not require the messages to be decodable at the mobile receiver and works in difficult reception conditions. We also explore the possibility of using deep learning to decode these messages. The proposed system detects whether a message exists in a short window. Then, the exact time of arrival is determined and finally the individual bits of the message are decoded. The results show that this receiver can decode additional messages that were not detected with a classical receiver. Lastly, this work also looks at the security of the messages sent by aircraft. An attacker could transmit additional messages or even alter genuine messages sent by aircraft. This study, by presenting a focused view on books in the Research Excellence Framework 2014, has delivered empirical evidence that may be used to support or contest previously held experiential perspectives. By covering the whole REF2014 and focusing in on Panel D for Arts and Humanities there is a depth of data not previously investigated for this purpose. The results of this study will be of use to: policy makers; academics; publishers, editors and publishing organizations; university decision makers and libraries.

The Balanced Value Impact Model (BVI Model) draws evidence from a wide range of sources to provide a compelling account of the means of measuring the impact of digital resources and using evidence to advocate how change benefits people. The aim is to provide key information and a strong model for the following primary communities of use: the cultural, heritage, academic or creative industries.For the purposes of this report, the definition of Impact is:The measurable outcomes arising from the existence of a digital resource that demonstrate a change in the life or life opportunities of the community for which the resource is intended.The outcome of this cross disciplinary research is a new and targeted model of Impact Assessment for the primary communities of use identified above. The Balanced Value Impact Model brings together aspects from disparate Impact Assessment communities into a cohesive and logical process for Impact Assessment.The Balanced Value Impact Model is intended to aid the thinking and decision making of those wishing to engage in Impact Assessment. It also acts as a guide through the process of Impact Assessment to enable the core values most appropriate to the assessment to be brought to the fore and given a balanced consideration when evaluating outcomes. It presumes that the assessment will be measuring change within an ecosystem for a digital resource.

This study explores the cost and policy models adapted by US arts museums in arriving at pricing structures for delivering imaging and rights services. It examines the new market realities and opportunities cultural institutions face due to the transition to digital collections.One hundred US art museums were surveyed and in-depth interviews were carried out with 20 museums.
