This article reports the development of a versatile high-speed reciprocating drive system (HRDS) with interchangeable probe heads to characterize the edge plasma region of ADITYA-U tokamak. This reciprocating probe drive system consisting of Langmuir and magnetic probe heads, is designed, fabricated, installed, and operated for studying the extent of fuel/impurity gas propagation and its influence on plasma dynamics in the far-edge region inside the last closed magnetic flux surface (LCFS). The HRDS is driven by a highly accurate, easy-to-control, dynamic, brushless, permanently excited synchronous servo motor operated by a PXI-commanded controller. The system is remotely operated and allows for precise control of the speed, acceleration, and distance traveled of the probe head on a shot-to-shot basis, facilitating seamless control of operations according to experimental requirements. Using this system, consisting of a linear array of Langmuir probes, measurements of plasma density, temperature, potential, and their fluctuations revealed that the fuel gas-puff impact these mean and fluctuating parameters up to three to four cm inside the LCFS. Attaching an array of magnetic probes to this system led to measurements of magnetic fluctuations inside the LCFS. The HRDS system is fully operational and serves as an important diagnostic tool for ADITYA-U tokamak.

Experiments on ADITYA-U tokamak show a marked enhancement in the sawtooth period by application of short gas puffs of fuel that cause a modification of the radial density profile. A consequent suppression of the trapped electron modes (TEMs) then leads to an increase in the core electron temperature. This slows down the heat propagation following a sawtooth crash, causing a delay in achieving the critical temperature gradient inside the q = 1 surface required for the next sawtooth crash to happen. The overall scenario has strong similarities with the behavior of sawtooth under electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH). Our findings suggest an alternate, simpler technique for sawtooth control that may be usefully employed in small/medium-sized tokamaks that do not have an ECRH or any other auxiliary heating facility.

High-Performance Computing (HPC) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) workloads typically demand substantial memory bandwidth and, to a degree, memory capacity. CXL memory expansion modules, also known as CXL "type-3" devices, enable enhancements in both memory capacity and bandwidth for server systems by utilizing the CXL protocol which runs over the PCIe interfaces of the processor. This paper discusses experimental findings on achieving increased memory bandwidth for HPC and AI workloads using Micron's CXL modules. This is the first study that presents real data experiments utilizing eight CXL E3.S (x8) Micron CZ122 devices on the Intel Xeon 6 processor 6900P (previously codenamed Granite Rapids AP) featuring 128 cores, alongside Micron DDR-5 memory operating at 6400 MT/s on each of the CPU's 12 DRAM channels. The eight CXL memories were set up as a unified NUMA configuration, employing software-based page level interleaving mechanism, available in Linux kernel v6.9+, between DDR5 and CXL memory nodes to improve overall system bandwidth. Memory expansion via CXL boosts read-only bandwidth by 24% and mixed read/write bandwidth by up to 39%. Across HPC and AI workloads, the geometric mean of performance speedups is 24%.

In this paper, we report the excitation of coherent density and potential fluctuations induced by magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) activity in the edge plasma region of ADITYA-U Tokamak. When the amplitude of the MHD mode, mainly the m/n = 2/1, increases beyond a threshold value of 0.3-0.4 %, coherent oscillations in the density and potential fluctuations are observed having the same frequency as that of the MHD mode. The mode numbers of these MHD induced density and potential fluctuations are obtained by Langmuir probes placed at different radial, poloidal, and toroidal locations in the edge plasma region. Detailed analyses of these Langmuir probe measurements reveal that the coherent mode in edge potential fluctuation has a mode structure of m/n = 2/1 whereas the edge density fluctuation has an m/n = 1/1 structure. It is further observed that beyond the threshold, the coupled power fraction scales almost linearly with the magnitude of magnetic fluctuations. Furthermore, the rise rates of the coupled power fraction for coherent modes in density and potential fluctuations are also found to be dependent on the growth rate of magnetic fluctuations. The disparate mode structures of the excited modes in density and plasma potential fluctuations suggest that the underlying mechanism for their existence is most likely due to the excitation of the global high-frequency branch of zonal flows occurring through the coupling of even harmonics of potential to the odd harmonics of pressure due to 1/R dependence of the toroidal magnetic field.

We developed a method called batch and drift correction method by White Noise Normalization (WiNNbeta) to correct individual metabolites for batch effects and drifts. This method tests for white noise properties to identify metabolites in need of correction and corrects them by using fine-tuned splines. To test the method performance we applied WiNNbeta to LC-MS data from our metabolomic studies and computed CVs before and after WiNNbeta correction in quality control samples.

Planets grow in rotating disks of dust and gas around forming stars, some of which can subsequently collide in giant impacts after the gas component is removed from the disk. Monitoring programs with the warm Spitzer mission have recorded significant and rapid changes in mid-infrared output for several stars, interpreted as variations in the surface area of warm dusty material ejected by planetary-scale collisions and heated by the central star: e.g., NGC 2354-ID8, HD 166191 and V844 Persei. Here we report combined observations of the young (about 300 Myr), solar-like star ASASSN-21qj: an infrared brightening consistent with a blackbody temperature of 1000 K and a luminosity of 4 percent of that of the star lasting for about 1000 days, partially overlapping in time with a complex and deep wavelength-dependent optical eclipse that lasted for about 500 days. The optical eclipse started 2.5 years after the infrared brightening, implying an orbital period of at least that duration. These observations are consistent with a collision between two exoplanets of several to tens of Earth masses at 2 to 16 au from the central star. Such an impact produces a hot, highly-extended post-impact remnant with sufficient luminosity to explain the infrared observations. The rise in popularity of Large Language Models (LLMs) has prompted discussions in academic circles, with students exploring LLM-based tools for coursework inquiries and instructors exploring them for teaching and research. Even though a lot of work is underway to create LLM-based tools tailored for students and instructors, there is a lack of comprehensive user studies that capture the perspectives of students and instructors regarding LLMs. This paper addresses this gap by conducting surveys and interviews within undergraduate engineering universities in India. Using 1306 survey responses among students, 112 student interviews, and 27 instructor interviews around the academic usage of ChatGPT (a popular LLM), this paper offers insights into the current usage patterns, perceived benefits, threats, and challenges, as well as recommendations for enhancing the adoption of LLMs among students and instructors. Voice conversion (VC) models have demonstrated impressive few-shot conversion quality on the clean, native speech populations they're trained on. However, when source or target speech accents, background noise conditions, or microphone characteristics differ from training, quality voice conversion is not guaranteed. These problems are often left unexamined in VC research, giving rise to frustration in users trying to use pretrained VC models on their own data. We are interested in accent-preserving voice conversion for name pronunciation from self-recorded examples, a domain in which all three of the aforementioned conditions are present, and posit that demonstrating higher performance in this domain correlates with creating VC models that are more usable by otherwise frustrated users. We demonstrate that existing SOTA encoder-decoder VC models can be made robust to these variations and endowed with natural denoising capabilities using more diverse data and simple data augmentation techniques in pretraining., Comment: Interspeech 2023 Show and Tell, 2 pp
