Background Exploration of biocides in microbial system becomes increasingly interesting. Among the different microbial systems, the study of endophytes becomes an important field of research because of their agricultural as well as pharmaceutical importance. Bacterial endophytes from two medicinal plants from North Easter states of India had been studied for their potential antibacterial and antifungal properties. Results Bacterial endophytes from two medicinal plant species abundantly available in North Eastern states of India, Chirata (Swertia chirata) and Datura (Datura stramonium), had been isolated and studied for their anti-bacterial and anti-fungal activities. Six bacterial endophytes were isolated from Chirata and 5 from Datura. All these bacterial isolates were initially isolated by observing their colony morphology, and then 9 morphologically distinct bacterial isolates were identified at molecular level by their 16s rRNA sequencing. Among the identified isolates, 5 were found to be belonged to genus Staphylococcus, 2 Bacillus, and one each belonged to Rhodococcus and Cupriavidus. Antibacterial study was carried out against 2 plant pathogenic bacteria, viz., Xanthomonas oryzae and Ralstonia solanacearum. Antifungal study was carried out against 2 plant pathogenic fungi, viz., Fusarium oxysporum and F. solani. Out of 6 bacterial isolates from Chirata, one showed antibacterial as well as antifungal properties, and another one showed antifungal properties only. Likewise, out of 5 bacterial isolates from Datura, one found to have both antibacterial and antifungal properties, and another one has only antifungal properties. Conclusion Few bacterial endophytes isolated from S. chirata and D. stramonium L., abundantly available in North Eastern part of India, had potential antibacterial as well as antifungal properties. This could be considered as the baseline information on potential antibacterial and antifungal agents from bacterial endophytes. Further investigations are required to assess their efficacy against several other bacterial and fungal diseases of economic importance.

The ever increasing human population throughout the world becomes threatening to the fragile ecosystems on the Earth. With the present accelerating human growth rate, it is supposed to surpass nine billion population by the end of 2050. With the advancement of human civilization, the need of the society is also getting changed rapidly. Nature is the only source to fulfill the human need. Thus, human beings are chiefly responsible for environmental degradation and ecological imbalance due to their increase in population, expansion in agriculture and livestock, deforestation, urbanization and industrialization, use of more energy, and advanced technology in most of the sectors to fulfill their increasing need and greed. Population explosion increases demand in many folds for consumable items like food, water, energy, etc., and nonconsumable items like a house, household materials, vehicle, etc. Finally, it is creating problems like shrinkage of freshwater sources, reduction, and contamination of groundwater, loss of soil-fertility and soil-structure, soil erosion, decrease in biodiversity, increase in air pollution and loss of other resources. Again, owing to the changing global climate, all countries are faced with the problems related to the shortage of drinking water, food security and food safety, air and water pollution, and most importantly, its threats to the existence of all living beings on the Earth. In considering the issue of environmental sustainability, environmental management becomes a major policy issue in the international and environmental agenda. Bioeconomy is, thus, a concept that was initially conceived to discuss the specialized environment with reference to environmental management in a sustainable manner. Currently, the “Bioeconomy” or “Green economy” concept is getting importance, because everyone covering from scientists to economists now understands that Bioeconomy is one of the major components to sustain world economy in the long run. Bioeconomy concept is thus searching for practical solutions at local, as well as a global level to improve the quality of living. Agriculture is still the main source of livelihood in almost all countries of the world. Besides food security, it is helping in employment generation, entrepreneurship development, and also contributing a lot to overall development of society. Bioeconomy gives emphasis on the efficient and effective use of all kinds of biological resources from land-to-water that are renewable in nature in a sustainable manner. In this article, we highlight the recent progress and advances on the subject “Bioeconomy” in context with sustainable agriculture, forestry, and fishery.

In the present study, the tick isolates were collected from Assam state, of northeastern region (NER) and characterized using in vitro bioassay, biochemical and molecular assays. Comparing LC50 value of susceptible IVRI-I and larvae of field isolates, revealed that RF against deltamethrin was highest for Morigaon (MGN = 21.8) and lowest for Sonitpur (SNP = 3.3) isolate. The RF against cypermethrin was highest for Nagaon (NGO = 5.0) and lowest for Barpeta (BPT = 1.2) isolate. Against coumaphos, the highest RF of 4.5 was calculated for BPT (4.5) and lowest for NGO (1.3) isolate. While using adults based assay, highest RF of 24.68 against deltamethrin and lowest RF of 4.96 was determined for MGN and SNP isolate, respectively. In contrast to the results obtained using larvae, against cypermethrin, highest RF was recorded for Kamrup Metropolitan (KMP) while it was NGO isolate using larvae. In case of coumaphos, both larvae and adults of BPT isolate were also highly resistant and lowest RF was detected in SNP (2.30) isolate. All the isolates were susceptible to ivermectin. A significant correlation (p < 0.01) between deltamethrin resistance and higher expression of glutathioneS-transferase was observed while no correlation with esterase and monooxygenase enzymes activity was noted. For the development of possible ecofriendly control measure, different accessions of Argemone mexicana and Datura metel plant species were collected, extracted and screened against adult ticks. Two accessions, NEA-03 and NED-06 collected from Amlighat and Diphu (East Karbi Anglong) were more than 90 % effective. Further dose response study of these accessions determined the LC50 values of 4.86 and 3.96 %, respectively.The resistance status of the collected tick isolates was compared with the data generated from other regions having higher livestock population and possibility of exploitation of identified plant species for the development of natural antitick product is discussed.
