1. Fostering sustainability through technological brilliance: a study on the nexus of organizational STARA capability, GHRM, GSCM, and sustainable performance

Abstract

Abstract This study aims to investigate the influence of Organizational Smart Technology, Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, and Algorithms (STARA) capabilities on Green Human Resource Management (GHRM) practices, Green Supply Chain Management (GSCM) practices, and also its direct impact on Sustainable Performance (SP) outcomes within the manufacturing landscape of Bangladesh. A quantitative approach was employed, gathering data from 395 employees in the Bangladeshi manufacturing sector through a survey questionnaire using a seven-point Likert scale. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was utilized to analyze the data, focusing on testing hypotheses related to the relationships between organizational STARA capabilities, GHRM, GSCM, and SP. The study found positive relationships between organizational STARA (OSC) capabilities and GHRM, GSCM, and SP. All hypotheses were accepted, GHRM ← STARA (β = 0.210), GSCM ← STARA (β = 0.247), and SP ← STARA (β = 0.135). Additionally, it revealed that GHRM and GSCM mediate the relationship between organizational STARA capabilities and SP. This research contributes to filling the existing gap in the literature by providing empirical evidence on the integration of STARA capabilities with GHRM and GSCM practices, specifically within the context of the Bangladeshi manufacturing sector. It also highlights the mediating role of GHRM and GSCM in enhancing sustainable performance through STARA capabilities. The findings of this study offer valuable insights for organizations operating in the manufacturing sector, suggesting strategies for leveraging STARA capabilities to enhance sustainability, efficiency, and competitiveness. Policymakers and stakeholders can use these insights to formulate policies and initiatives to promote the adoption of sustainable practices in manufacturing.

Abstract

The study aims to understand the antecedents of customer satisfaction that lead to high purchase intention, encompassing moderating role of system quality to achieve purchase intention. Theoretically, this research employs the technology acceptance model to examine the proposed relationship and complexity theory to employ fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) as a robust complementary method to the partial least squares-structural equation model (PLS-SEM). The proposed conceptual model is measured using data gathered from online customers in Bangladesh's electronic market. A survey of 311 e-commerce customers, using PLS-SEM and fsQCA models, reveals that factors influencing customer satisfaction are strongly linked to achieving purchase intention. The findings from PLS-SEM show that perceived ease of use and perceived enjoyment are highly supported by purchase intention. Similarly, system quality influences purchase intention and acts as a moderator. In the fsQCA analysis, hedonic motivation and perceived enjoyment are necessary conditions to achieve a high purchase intention. The hybrid models add the methodological contribution by combining both symmetric and asymmetric relationships, thereby providing a holistic understanding of system quality as a moderating factor to achieve high purchase intention, especially in the context of the e-commerce market in Bangladesh. This research outlines implications for the theoretical and managerial perspectives to build a better relationship between factors of satisfaction and purchase intention and enable policymakers to contribute better managerial decisions.

3. Revolutionizing Sustainable Fashion: Jute–Mycelium Vegan Leather Reinforced with Polyhydroxyalkanoate Biopolymer Crosslinking from Novel Bacteria

Abstract

Vegan leather derived from mushroom mycelium is a revolutionary technology that addresses the issues raised by bovine and synthetic leather. Jute–mycelium-based vegan leather was constructed using hessian jute fabric, natural rubber solution, and extracted polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) biopolymer from Bacillus subtilis strain FPP-K isolated from fermented herbal black tea liquor waste. The bacterial strain was confirmed using 16S rRNA genomic sequencing. The structural characteristics of sustainable mycelium vegan leather were identified using FTIR, SEM, and TGA methods. To address the functional features of the developed vegan leather, solubility, swelling degree, WVP, WCA, and mechanical strength were also evaluated. Mycelium networking was further validated by micromorphological examination (SEM) of the leather sample’s cross-sectional area. Jute–mycelium leather demonstrated a tensile strength of 8.62 MPa and a % elongation of 8.34, which were significantly greater than the control sample. Vegan leather displayed a strong peak in the O ═ H group of carbohydrates in the examination of chemical bonds. A high-frequency infrared wavelength of 1,462 cm−1 revealed the amide group of protein due to the presence of mycelium, while the absorption peak at 1,703 cm−1 in leather indicated the crosslinking of PHA. Moreover, the TGA study finalized the thermal stability of leather. The enhanced hydrophobicity and reduced swelling degree and solubility also endorsed the water resistance properties of the leather. The results of the investigation substantiated the potential properties of mycelium vegan leather as animal- and environment-free leather.

Abstract

Abstract Background Little is known about parental coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccine hesitancy in children with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD). This survey estimated the prevalence and predictive factors of vaccine hesitancy among parents of children with NDD. Methods A nationally representative cross-sectional survey was conducted from October 10 to 31, 2021. A structured vaccine hesitancy questionnaire was used to collect data from parents aged ≥ 18 years with children with NDD. In addition, individual face-to-face interviews were conducted at randomly selected places throughout Bangladesh. Multiple logistic regression analysis was conducted to identify the predictors of vaccine hesitancy. Results A total of 396 parents participated in the study. Abstract

Obesity is a pandemic which adds greatly to health care costs through its association with type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease, and cancers. The aim of this research is to investigate the effects of different concentrations of butyric acid on changes of body weight, blood biochemical parameters, and liver histo-texture in mice. Total twenty Swiss albino mice were divided into 4 groups viz Group A, B, C and D. Group A act as control while Group B, Group C and Group D were received 3 mM, 5 mM, and 7 mM/kg b.wt butyric acid respectively, throughout the experimental period. On the 60th day, blood and liver samples were collected for biochemical analysis and histopathology respectively. Abstract

Background: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) requires mass immunization to control the severity of symptoms and global spread. Data from developed countries have shown a high prevalence of parental COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy. However, parental vaccine hesitancy data in low- and middle-income countries are scarce. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of parental vaccine hesitancy and identify subgroups with higher odds of vaccine hesitancy in parents in Bangladesh. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on the parents of children aged Results: Data from 2,633 eligible parents were analyzed. Overall, 42.8% reported COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy for their youngest child. The final model suggested the following factors were associated with hesitancy: children's age; parent's age, religion, occupation, monthly household income, permanent address, living location, status of tobacco use, adherence with regular government vaccination programs (other than COVID-19), perceptions of COVID-19 vaccine efficacy among Bangladeshi children, self-vaccination intentions, reported family members' illness or death from COVID-19, and perceived threat of COVID-19 were the independent predictors of parental COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy. Conversely, participants who were not tobacco users, parents who were very likely to believe that their children or family members could be infected with COVID-19 in the following year and who were very concerned about their children or a family member contracting COVID-19 in the next year had significantly lower odds of COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy. Conclusions: Our study suggested that vaccine hesitation varied based on sociodemographic characteristics, religion, behavior, and perceived COVID-19 threat. Therefore, interventions focused on addressing vaccine hesitancy among specific subgroups are warranted.

Abstract

Objectives Paediatric cancer is a leading cause of death for children. Children in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) were four times more likely to die than children in high-income countries (HICs). This study aimed to test the hypothesis that the COVID-19 pandemic had affected the delivery of healthcare services worldwide, and exacerbated the disparity in paediatric cancer outcomes between LMICs and HICs.Design A multicentre, international, collaborative cohort study.Setting 91 hospitals and cancer centres in 39 countries providing cancer treatment to paediatric patients between March and December 2020.Participants Patients were included if they were under the age of 18 years, and newly diagnosed with or undergoing active cancer treatment for Acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma, Wilms’ tumour, sarcoma, retinoblastoma, gliomas, medulloblastomas or neuroblastomas, in keeping with the WHO Global Initiative for Childhood Cancer.Main outcome measure All-cause mortality at 30 days and 90 days.Results 1660 patients were recruited. 219 children had changes to their treatment due to the pandemic. Patients in LMICs were primarily affected (n=182/219, 83.1%). Abstract

This research uses waste textile cotton (WTC) from the textile industry as a raw material to synthesize sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) by adapting a modified etherification methodology. Yields of technical CMC (TCMC), semipurified CMC (SPCMC), and purified CMC (PCMC) were 3.45±0.17 g, 2.49±0.08 g, and 1.51±0.016 g, respectively, per gram of cotton waste. Degree of substitution (DS) values of PCMC, SPCMC, and TCMC was 0.998±0.007, 0.79±0.031, and 0.561±0.029, respectively. For PCMC, SPCMC, and TCMC, the purity of the prepared different grades of CMC was 98.59±0.12%, 78.56±1.93%, and 61.59±2.31%, respectively. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) peak values were 3437 cm-1, 1609 cm-1, and 1427 cm-1, proving WTC conversion to CMC. Furthermore, 2θ values of X-ray diffraction (XRD) peaks were 9.7 and 20.5, confirming the transformation of WTC to CMC as well. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) have been assessed to define CMC’s thermal stability and morphology, respectively.

Abstract

The application of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) as vital components for plant growth promotion against biotic and abiotic stresses could be a promising strategy to improve crop production in areas vulnerable to increasing salinity. Here, we isolated Seventy-five endophytic bacteria from roots of healthy Oryza sativa grown in a saline environment of the southern coastal region of Bangladesh. The endophytes in a culture of ~108 CFU/ml showed arrays of plant growth-promoting (PGP) activities: phytohormone (Indole acetic acid) production (1.20–60.13 μg/ ml), nutrient (phosphate) solubilization (0.02–1.81 μg/ml) and nitrogen fixation (70.24–198.70 μg/ml). Four genomically diverse groups were identified namely, Enterobacter, Achromobacter, Bacillus, and Stenotrophomonas using amplified ribosomal DNA restriction analysis followed by their respective 16S rDNA sequence analyses with that of the data available in NCBI GenBank. These four specific isolates showed tolerance to NaCl ranging from 1.37 to 2.57 mol/L in the nutrient agar medium. Under a 200 mmol/L salt stress in vitro, the bacteria in a culture of 108 CFU/ml exhibited competitive exopolysaccharide (EPS) production: Stenotrophomonas (65 μg/ml) and Bacillus (28 μg/ml), when compared to the positive control, Pseudomonas spp. (23.65 μg/ml), a phenomenon ably supported by their strong biofilm-producing abilities both in a microtiter plate assay, and in soil condition; and demonstrated by images of the scanning electron microscope (SEM). Overall, the isolated endophytic microorganisms revealed potential PGP activities that could be supported by their biofilm-forming ability under salinity stress, thereby building up a sustainable solution for ensuring food security in coastal agriculture under changing climate conditions.

Abstract

Vegan leather derived from mushroom mycelium is a revolutionary technology that addresses the issues raised by bovine and synthetic leather. Jute--mycelium-based vegan leather was constructed using hessian jute fabric, natural rubber solution, and extracted polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) biopolymer from Bacillus subtilis strain FPP-K isolated from fermented herbal black tea liquor waste. The bacterial strain was confirmed using 16S rRNA genomic sequencing. The structural characteristics of sustainable mycelium vegan leather were identified using FTIR, SEM, and TGA methods. To address the functional features of the developed vegan leather, solubility, swelling degree, WVP, WCA, and mechanical strength were also evaluated. Mycelium networking was further validated by micromorphological examination (SEM) of the leather sample's cross-sectional area. Jute--mycelium leather demonstrated a tensile strength of 8.62 MPa and a % elongation of 8.34, which were significantly greater than the control sample. Vegan leather displayed a strong peak in the O=H group of carbohydrates in the examination of chemical bonds. A highfrequency infrared wavelength of 1,462 cm-1 revealed the amide group of protein due to the presence of mycelium, while the absorption peak at 1,703 cm-1 in leather indicated the crosslinking of PHA. Moreover, the TGA study finalized the thermal stability of leather. The enhanced hydrophobicity and reduced swelling degree and solubility also endorsed the water resistance properties of the leather. Abstract

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a group of neurodevelopmental disabilities that are not curable but may be ameliorated by early interventions. We gathered early-detected ASD datasets relating to toddlers, children, adolescents and adults, and applied several feature transformation methods, including log, Z-score and sine functions to these datasets. Various classification techniques were then implemented with these transformed ASD datasets and assessed for their performance. We found SVM showed the best performance for the toddler dataset, while Adaboost gave the best results for the children dataset, Glmboost for the adolescent and Adaboost for the adult datasets. The feature transformations resulting in the best classifications was sine function for toddler and Z-score for children and adolescent datasets. After these analyses, several feature selection techniques were used with these Z-score-transformed datasets to identify the significant ASD risk factors for the toddler, child, adolescent and adult subjects. The results of these analytical approaches indicate that, when appropriately optimised, machine learning methods can provide good predictions of ASD status. This suggests that it may possible to apply these models for the detection of ASD in its early stages.

Abstract

The poly(brilliant cresyl blue) (PBCB)-modified activated glassy carbon electrode (AGCE) shows the catalytic activity toward the oxidation of hydroquinone (HQ) and catechol (CT). The modified electrode can also separate the oxidation peaks of HQ and CT in their mixture, which is not possible with bare GCE. These properties of the modified electrode can be utilized to fabricate an electrochemical sensor for sensitive and simultaneous detection of HQ and CT. In this study, an attempt is made to control the sensitivity of the modified electrodes. This can be accomplished by simply changing the activation condition of the GCE during electropolymerization. GCE can be activated via one-step (applying only oxidation potential) and two-step (applying both oxidation and reduction potential) processes. When we change the activation condition from onestep to twosteps, a clear enhancement inpeak currents of HQ and CT is observed. This helps us to fabricate a highly sensitive electrochemical sensor for the simultaneous detection of HQ and CT. The molecular dynamics (MD) simulation is carried out to explain the experimental data. The MD simulations provide the insight adsorption phenomena to clarify the reasons for higher signals of CT over HQ due to having meta-position –OH group in its structure.

In response to COVID-19 emergency outbreak, several countries took unprecedented measures and lockdown was implemented worldwide to minimize the drastic consequences. To reduce the damage, collaboration and acquiescence of people is needed to limit the spread of the virus. This study attempted to assess the knowledge, attitudes and precautions taken against COVID-19 among the Bangladeshi people. An online survey was carried out between 12th April and 4th May, 2020 using a snowball sampling technique in which 424 Bangladeshi residents participated. Descriptive statistics, chi-square test, fisher’s exact test, one-way ANOVA, binary logistic regression, t-tests have been carried out. Most of the participants were concerned about the risk of COVID-19 as more than 80% people took 14 out of 18 precautions to avoid COVID-19. The attitudes toward COVID-19 showed people’s willingness to follow government guidelines on isolation (96.7%) and quarantine (97.6%). The overall mean knowledge score was 3.11 out of 4. Abstract

Germination parameters and seedling growth of three varieties of boro rice (V1 = BRRI dhan28, V2 = Sylhet Boro and V3 = Bere Ratna) were studied in three concentrations of NaCl {S0 = control (distilled water), S1 = 75 mM NaCl and S2 = 150 mM NaCl}. Germination test was performed following Petri dish method with Completely Randomized Design (CRD) in three replications. Data were collected on germination (%) and shoot and root lengths. There was a wide variation in germination parameters and shoot and root growth among the rice varieties. In all the germination parameters Bere Ratna was found superior, followed by Sylhet Boro. Generally shoot length of the rice varieties gradually decreased with increasing salinity. The highest shoot length (5.53 cm) was found in Sylhet Boro in control. The lowest shoot length (1.30 cm) was found in BRRI dhan28 at 75 mM NaCl. However, root growth was not influenced by salinity. Root and shoot length were negatively related to salt levels.

Abstract

Thyroid cancer (TC) is one of the fastest-growing cancers in the world. Thyroid dysfunction has an influence on chronic kidney disease (CKD), but the possible relations between TC and CDK have not been explored yet. The present study aimed to identify shared candidate genes and pathways between TC and CKD from the transcriptomics datasets to identify important clues to the pathological mechanisms in these diseases. The gene expression datasets of TC and CKD were obtained from Gene Expression Omnibus and analyzed to identify common genes between TC and CKD. We have detected 84 common differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between TC and CKD.We have integrated the DEGs with protein-protein interaction (PPI) network and identified ten significant hub proteins (TLE1, CTNNA1, TEK, TPM2, FGFR2, MMP2, SDC2, NRP1, TCF7L1, GSN) based on topological analysis. The integration of DEGs with biomolecular networks revealed transcription factors (FOXC1, GATA2, FOXL1, HINFP, LIMK2, E2F1, POU2F2, TFAP2A, YY1, RERE) and microRNAs (mir-335–5p, mir-26b-5p, mir-124–3p, mir-181a-5p, mir-98–5p, mir-16–5p, mir-7-5p, mir-129–5p, mir-8485, mir-1827). The present study identified biomolecules shared by TC and CKD at protein levels (hub proteins, transcription factors), and RNA levels (mRNAs, microRNAs). Abstract

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neuro-developmental disorder that affects social skills, language, speech and communication. Early detection of ASD individuals, especially children, could help to devise and strategize right therapeutic plan at right time. Human faces encode important markers that can be used to identify ASD by analyzing facial features, eye contact, and so on. In this work, an improved transfer-learning-based autism face recognition framework is proposed to identify kids with ASD in the early stages more precisely. Therefore, we have collected face images of children with ASD from the Kaggle data repository, and various machine learning and deep learning classifiers and other transfer-learning-based pre-trained models were applied. We observed that our improved MobileNet-V1 model demonstrates the best accuracy of 90.67% and the lowest 9.33% value of both fall-out and miss rate compared to the other classifiers and pre-trained models. Furthermore, this classifier is used to identify different ASD groups investigating only autism image data using k-means clustering technique. Thus, the improved MobileNet-V1 model showed the highest accuracy (92.10%) for k = 2 autism sub-types. We hope this model will be useful for physicians to detect autistic children more explicitly at the early stage.

38. Effectiveness of jute cellulose nanocrystal reinforcement into bio-packaging ‘Sonali Bag’

Abstract

In an age marked by environmental consciousness, ‘Sonali Bag’ has emerged as a promising substitute for single-use plastic bags, invented in Bangladesh. It is a jute cellulose-based, totally biodegradable, compostable, recyclable, and environment-friendly biopolymer. However, certain physical limitations have hindered its widespread consumer appeal. To address these challenges, this study pioneers the integration of jute cellulose nanocrystals (JCNCs) into Sonali Bag, with the objective of enhancing their physical properties. JCNC, obtained through a meticulous 64% concentrated sulfuric acid hydrolysis process, has been reinforced with Sonali Bag at varying loadings (0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4 wt.%). The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis showed spherical cellulose nanocrystals with high crystallinity and distinctive tear-like features on the nanoparticle’s surface. Furthermore, the SEM micrographs depicted that JCNC loading up to 0.2% helped reduce the pore formation of biocomposite. Moreover, the thermal properties increased significantly, and tensile strength increased by approximately 37% MPa after reinforcing JCNC with Sonali Bag. The water-resistant capacity of 0.2% CNC-reinforced film was about 30% better than other compositions. The JCNC-reinforced composite materials were found to moderate the degradation rate, contributing to the prolonged sustainability of these biodegradable solutions.

This experiment was carried out at the rooftop garden of the Department of Agricultural Botany, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU), Dhaka-1207, Bangladesh from October 2017 to March 2018 to evaluate the response of tomato to different plant growing structures and composition of growing media in the rooftop garden. The experiment had two factors, factor A- two plant growing structures, viz., S1 = Plastic pot, S2 = Earthen pot and factor B - six different plant growing medium viz. M0 = Soil 100% (w/w) + inorganic fertilizer (IF)/(control), M1 = Soil 80% (w/w) + 20% cowdung (w/w) + IF, M2 = Soil 70% (w/w) + 30% cowdung (w/w) + IF, M3 = Soil 90% (w/w) + 10% vermicompost (w/w) + IF, M4 = Soil 80% (w/w) + 20% vermicompost (w/w) + IF, M5 = Soil 80% (w/w) + 10% cowdung (w/w) + 10% vermicompost (w/w) + IF. The factorial experiment was laid out in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with four replications. The experimental results yield contributing characters and yield of tomato significantly influenced by different plant growing structures and various composition of plant growing media and also their combination. Considering plant growing structures, the S1 gave the highest flower clusters per plant, flowers per plant, fruit length and fruit breadth. The maximum yield of fruits per plant (1.69 kg) was also obtained from plastic pot. The M5 had the highest flower clusters per plant, flowers per plant, fruit length and fruit diameter. The maximum yield of fruits per plant (2.17 kg) was recorded from the M5. The highest yield of fruits per plant (2.15 kg) was obtained from the treatment combination of S1M5. This experimental results suggest that S1M5 be able to increase the fruit yield of BARI tomato14 for rabi season in the rooftop garden.

Abstract

ObjectivesPaediatric cancer is a leading cause of death for children. Children in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) were four times more likely to die than children in high-income countries (HICs). This study aimed to test the hypothesis that the COVID-19 pandemic had affected the delivery of healthcare services worldwide, and exacerbated the disparity in paediatric cancer outcomes between LMICs and HICs.DesignA multicentre, international, collaborative cohort study.Setting91 hospitals and cancer centres in 39 countries providing cancer treatment to paediatric patients between March and December 2020.ParticipantsPatients were included if they were under the age of 18 years, and newly diagnosed with or undergoing active cancer treatment for Acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma, Wilms’ tumour, sarcoma, retinoblastoma, gliomas, medulloblastomas or neuroblastomas, in keeping with the WHO Global Initiative for Childhood Cancer.Main outcome measureAll-cause mortality at 30 days and 90 days.Results1660 patients were recruited. 219 children had changes to their treatment due to the pandemic. Patients in LMICs were primarily affected (n=182/219, 83.1%). Relative to patients with paediatric cancer in HICs, patients with paediatric cancer in LMICs had 12.1 (95% CI 2.93 to 50.3) and 7.9 (95% CI 3.2 to 19.7) times the odds of death at 30 days and 90 days, respectively, after presentation during the COVID-19 pandemic (pConclusionsThe COVID-19 pandemic has affected paediatric oncology service provision. It has disproportionately affected patients in LMICs, highlighting and compounding existing disparities in healthcare systems globally that need addressing urgently. However, many patients with paediatric cancer continued to receive their normal standard of care. This speaks to the adaptability and resilience of healthcare systems and healthcare workers globally.
