Abstract

Best Measurement Paper Award; International audience; In this paper, we present a small, yet realistic, vehicular cell-free massive MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) architecture deployed at the University of Lille in a typical suburban environment under both Line-of-Sight (LOS) and obstructed LOS (OLOS) shadowing conditions. The radio channels were acquired with a distributed RF-over-Fiber (RoF) upgrade of the real-time channel sounder MaMIMOSA. The system operates at 5.89 GHz with an 80 MHz bandwidth, which corresponds to the ITS frequency band offered by the ITS-G5 and C-V2X technologies. Four omnidirectional receive antennas were placed on the roof of a van moving at a speed of 25 km/h. The propagation channel was measured for various transmit antenna configurations, ranging from co-located antennas to fully distributed antennas. The measurement results show a significant gain in the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) as well as a more uniform coverage and smaller delay spread values with the distributed scenarios compared to the centralized ones. Finally, the path loss measurement results obtained for the cell-free network provide deployment guidelines for the distributed antennas.

Abstract

This paper describes the results of the experimental vehicle-to-infrastructure radio channel sounding campaign at 1.35 GHz performed in a suburban environment in Lille, France. Based on the channel measurements acquired in vertical and horizontal polarizations, a multitaper estimator is used to estimate the local scattering function for sequential regions in time, from which Doppler and delay power profiles are deduced. We analyze second order statistics such as delay and Doppler spreads, as well as small-scale fading amplitude. A similar behavior between both polarizations is observed. In both cases, the statistical distributions of the RMS delay and Doppler spreads are best fitted to a lognormal model. The small-scale fading of the strongest path is found to be Rician distributed, while the later delay taps show occasional worse-than-Rayleigh behavior.

Abstract

This paper describes the results of the experimental radio channel sounding campaign performed in an arched road tunnel in Le Havre, France. The co-polar and cross-polar channels measurements are carried out in the closed side lane, while the lane along the center of the tunnel is open to traffic. We investigate the channel characteristics in terms of: path loss, fading distribution, polarization power ratios and delay spread. All these parameters are essential for the deployment of vehicular communication systems inside tunnels. Our results indicate that, while the H-polar channel gain attenuates slower than the V-polar channel due to the geometry of the tunnel, the mean delay spread of the H-polar channel is larger than that of the V-polar channel.

Abstract

In this study, path loss measurements were performed in a train environment at five frequencies used in present and future wireless communication technologies, considering various transmitter (Tx) - receiver (Rx) configurations. First, a one-slope path-loss model was constructed for each frequency. Path loss exponents below 1.5 at lower frequencies (similar to 1 GHz) indicate a waveguide effect, while the influence of the seats on the propagation at higher frequencies (similar to 2 GHz) results in exponents larger than 2. Finally, a single, frequency-dependent path-loss model was fitted to the total data pool, resulting in a model with a coefficient of determination, R-2, of 0.77.

Abstract

This paper presents performance results of three high-resolution parameters estimation algorithms: ESPRIT, SAGE and RiMAX. MIMO indoor radio channels which include measurement-based time-delay diffuse multipath scattering (DMC) were emulated to evaluate the estimation performance of both algorithms. The impact of the DMC on the parameter estimation accuracy is studied by adjusting its power with respect to the specular component. For all discussed scenarios, it is clearly demonstrated that RiMAX outperforms ESPRIT and SAGE which do not include DMC estimation into their data model. The preliminary results clearly highlight the importance of DMC and the necessity to account for its presence in data models to accurately estimate the channel parameters. Otherwise, very poor estimates of the coherent component parameters are expected which would in turn result in wronged propagation prediction models.

Abstract

In this paper, directional MIMO measurements in an indoor office environment are presented. A 5-D ESPRIT estimation algorithm is used to extract parameters associated with discrete propagation paths, such as their azimuth of arrival, azimuth of departure, delay, and power. The estimated path parameters are grouped into clusters using the statistical K-power-means algorithm. Statistical distributions are determined for the path parameters within individual clusters and for their change between clusters. To validate the distributional choices, the goodness-of-fit to the proposed distributions is verified using statistical hypothesis tests with sufficient power.

Abstract

Real-time wireless capsule endoscopy offers more flexibility and more precise screening options over commercially available passive endoscopy systems by allowing physicians to steer endoscopy capsules in real time. Yet, this requires reliable uninterrupted high frame-rate video streaming. In this contribution, we present a wearable repeater relay system that overcomes the impairments of the in-to-out body propagation channel and reliably relays implant data to a remote access point. The system consists of a set of wearable textile repeater nodes, exploiting receive diversity to provide a sufficiently large instantaneous carrier-to-noise ratio for live video streaming. Each wearable node, combining a dedicated receive antenna capturing the implant signal, an amplifier and an off-body transmit antenna, is fully implemented in textile materials, such that the comfort of the patient is not disturbed by the relay system. After outlining the design steps for the wearable relay node, in particular demonstrating stable robust antenna characteristics for the textile receive antenna oriented towards the body, we experimentally verify that a 6th-order diversity system provides the best compromise between user comfort and signal quality.
