3. Endorsement of Money Ethic and Protestant Work Ethic among Three Groups of Welfare Recipients.

Abstract

Endorsement of the money ethic and the Protestant work ethic among past and present welfare recipients was examined in a study of three groups: 164 current recipients of Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC); 159 individuals receiving AFDC while enrolled in various training programs; and 158 past AFDC recipients who are now employed. The 30-item Money Ethic Scale and Blood's 4-item scale measuring endorsement of the Protestant work ethic were administered to all three groups. Demographic data were also collected. The responses to both scales were subjected to exploratory factor analyses. Four factors determined money attitudes: good, success, evil, and budget. Employed welfare recipients tended to have higher incomes, longer job tenures, and more positive attitudes toward money than did welfare recipients regardless of whether they were in training. Most welfare recipients did not value money; rather, they took money for granted and considered it evil. Employed past welfare recipients no longer consider money evil. Welfare recipients in training programs had the strongest belief that money spent is money lost (wasted). As expected, employed past welfare recipients endorsed the Protestant work ethic more highly than the other two groups did. (Contains 49 references.) (MN)

4. Attitudes toward Money, Intrinsic Job Satisfaction, and Voluntary Turnover.

Abstract

A study was conducted to determine whether employees' attitudes toward money (money ethic endorsement) moderates the relationships between intrinsic job satisfaction on the one hand and thoughts of withdrawal and voluntary turnover on the other. Data were collected from workers in the Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation in a southeastern state in the United States. At the beginning of the study, 155 workers were surveyed, with a 56 percent return rate. Eighteen months later, 82 of the employees were rated as stayers (62) or leavers (20). Employees' demographic variables such as age, education, sex, tenure in the organization, and annual income, and their attitudes toward money and intrinsic job satisfaction were measured using rating scales. The study found that, for employees with high money ethic endorsement, there was a negative and nonsignificant relationship between intrinsic job satisfaction and turnover: workers with high money ethic endorsement tend to have higher turnover behavior regardless of their intrinsic job satisfaction. Employees with low money ethic endorsement and low intrinsic job satisfaction tend to have the lowest actual turnover, perhaps because they burn out and withdraw psychologically, developing an "indifferent" personality orientation. Opportunity and money ethic were the highest predictors of voluntary job turnover. (13 references) (KC)

5. Pay Differentials Revisited: CEOs and the Five Highest-Paid Employees at Private Colleges and Universities.

Abstract

This study compared the salary differentials of college chief executive officers (CEOs), college presidents, and the five highest-paid employees at 190 private colleges and universities. The pay differential in total compensation for CEOs and the highest-paid professor at liberal arts institution was significantly higher than that at doctorate-granting institutions, which in turn was higher than that at research institutions. The pattern of pay differentials was reversed for the highest-paid and second highest-paid employee at research institutions and at liberal arts institutions. Other differentials failed to reach significance across institutions. Implications concerning institutions' internal consistency and external competitiveness are discussed. (Contains 34 references.) 6. The Importance of Human Needs during Retrospective Peacetime and the Persian Gulf War: University Students in the United States.

Abstract

The importance of human needs during the retrospective peacetime in 1990 and the Persian Gulf War in 1991 was examined among 564 college students in the United States. Results of factor analyses showed that during peacetime, two factors (higher-order and lower-order needs) were identified. During the war, all needs were rated as more important and only one factor was identified. During peacetime, the safety of one's own life was significantly more important than the safety of the country, which was rated as the least important need. During the war, the safety of the country became significantly more important and was as important as the safety of one's own life. Students who had a spouse, family members, or friends in the Middle East during Desert Storm differed significantly from those who did not in war-related stress and the importance of several needs. 8. A Correlational Study of Students' Evaluations of Faculty Performance and Their Self-Ratings in an Instructional Setting.

Abstract

Student evaluation of professors is increasingly accepted as a normal part of higher education. To examine whether students' involvements and participation in an instructional setting would be positively correlated with their evaluations of faculty performance, 66 college students were given a Likert type rating scale to rate their own behaviors in an instructional setting and to evaluate faculty performance. Eight dimensions of the instructor's performance were rated: (1) knowledge of subject matter; (2) ability to answer student questions; (3) ability to explain, demonstrate, and present material clearly; (4) ability to stimulate student interest; (5) willingness to talk with students outside of class; (6) clarity of course requirements; (7) clarity of grading criteria; and (8) knowledge gained by student in class. Correlations among student behaviors and faculty performance ratings were examined. The results showed that students' self-reported behaviors in an instructional setting were significantly correlated with their faculty evaluations. Further, 33 out of 36 intercorrelations among the eight dimensions of the instructor's performance reached significance, suggesting a strong halo effect in students' evaluations. The present results supported the notion that ratings may give a better indication of a rater's schemata than they do a ratee's actual level of performance. (NB)

11. The love of money, pay satisfaction and academic tenure: professors in a public institution of higher education

Abstract

This study tests a model of pay satisfaction using a sample of 207 American professors, treats academic tenure as a moderator, and investigates the model across tenured (n = 126) and non-tenured (n = 77) professors simultaneously. The direct path examines the relationship between income and pay satisfaction, whereas the indirect path consists of income, the love of money, pay comparison, and pay satisfaction. For the whole sample, results supported the direct path in that income led to pay satisfaction. When both the direct and indirect paths were examined simultaneously, income led to low pay satisfaction. Income enhanced the love of money that was used to frame referent pay comparison that had an impact on pay satisfaction. For tenured professors, the indirect path was significant and the direct path approached significance. For non-tenured professors, the referent comparison to pay satisfaction path was significant. Our research contributes to our new insights and understanding of pay satisfaction among tenured and non-tenured professors in a public institution of higher education. 20. Effects of Leadership Status and Performance Feedback on Self and other Attributions and Task Performance

Abstract

Subjects' attributions of self and others were examined as a function of leadership status (supervisor vs subordinate) and feedback on performance (positive, negative, or no feedback). Each group had one supervisor and two subordinates (one confederate and one subordinate-subject). Bogus performance feedback was given to each group at random. In their attribution of success, subjects rated confederates as having more success on the task than themselves, so they presented themselves modestly in a social context. Supervisors assigned much less responsibility to themselves than to confederates and subordinates. However, subordinates' attributions of responsibility for self and others were not significantly different. Supervisors and subordinates performed equally well on “quantity” of performance, yet the former were able to maintain a significantly better “qualify” of performance than the latter. Generalization from a laboratory study to actual work situations is not appropriate until justified by appropriate field work.
