4. Variation in leaf N allocation and mesophyll conductance to CO2 in four tree species under low soil P stress in subtropical China.

Abstract

Low P (LP) levels in leaves can affect their photosynthetic N-use efficiency (PNUE), internal N allocation, and mesophyll conductance to CO2 (gm). The changes in leaf internal N allocation and gm in N-fixing trees and the consequent changes in PNUE under low soil P treatments are not well understood. In this study, we exposed seedlings of Dalbergia odorifera, Erythrophleum fordii (N-fixing trees), Castanopsis hystrix, and Betula alnoides (non-N-fixing trees) to three levels of soil P. The effects were not consistent among species, and LP had no specific effect on N-fixing species. Saturated net CO2 assimilation rate (Asat) values in D. odorifera and C. hystrix were remarkably lower under LP than under high P (HP) because Cc in D. odorifera and Vcmax and Jmax in C. hystrix were reduced. Narea values in D. odorifera and C. hystrix were also reduced under LP, and the degree of reduction of Narea was larger than that of Asat, which resulted in decreased PNUE in these species. PR and gm in D. odorifera and PR, PB, and gm in C. hystrix significantly decreased under LP and were internal factors affecting the variation in PNUE in these two trees. PCW was significantly and linearly related to PR only in C. hystrix, indicating that more N was invested in the cell walls to resist the damage caused by low soil P, at the expense of Rubisco N. Abstract

The volatile organic compounds emitted by plants significantly impact the atmospheric environment. The impacts of drought stress on the biogenic volatile organic compound (BVOC) emissions of plants are still under debate. In this study, the effects of two drought–rehydration cycle groups with different durations on isoprene emissions from Populus nigra (black poplar) seedlings were studied. The P. nigra seedlings were placed in a chamber that controlled the soil water content, radiation, and temperature. The daily emissions of isoprene and physiological parameters were measured. The emission rates of isoprene (Fiso) reached the maximum on the third day (D3), increasing by 58.0% and 64.2% compared with the controlled groups, respectively, and then Fiso significantly decreased. Photosynthesis decreased by 34.2% and 21.6% in D3 in the first and second groups, respectively. After rehydration, Fiso and photosynthesis recovered fully in two groups. However, Fiso showed distinct inconsistencies in two groups, and the recovery rates of Fiso in the second drought group were slower than the recovery rates of Fiso in the first groups. The response of BVOC emissions during the drought-rehydration cycle was classified into three phases, including stimulated, inhibited, and restored after rehydration. The emission pattern of isoprene indicated that isoprene played an important role in the response of plants to drought stress. A drought–rehydration model was constructed, which indicated the regularity of BVOC emissions in the drought–rehydration cycle. BVOC emissions were extremely sensitive to drought, especially during droughts of short duration. Parameters in computational models related to BVOC emissions of plants under drought stress should be continuously improved. © 2022 by the authors.

Abstract

Studying community phylogenetic diversity within forest stands of different diameter classes (i.e. size classes) is helpful for understanding relationships among species at different ages while at the same time community phylogenetic structure. However, little research has been focused on the influence of species abundance on phylogenetic structure of community. This study was conducted in the Jianfengling tropical montane rainforest on Hainan Island. First, we assessed the impact of species abundance on four widely used phylogenetic diversity indices at different size classes. Next, two of the indices (i.e. net relatedness index, •研究报告• 618 生 物 多 样 性 Biodiversity Science 第 24 卷 NRI and nearest taxon index, NTI) were standardized and used to quantify phylogenetic relatedness of woody plants at different size classes across a series of local habitat types. The results showed that: (1) The unweighted MPD (mean pairwise distance) index significantly overestimated phylogenetic diversity relative to MPD weighted according to species abundance. This overestimation when using unweighted MPD was greatest for small trees and shrubs (1 cm≤DBH 0).
