13. The Antecedents and Outcomes of Public Service Motivation: A Meta-Analysis Using the Job Demands–Resources Model.

Abstract

Understanding what drives public service motivation and its impacts is crucial for improving public sector performance. This meta-analysis synthesized the antecedents and outcomes of public service motivation based on the job demands–resources (JD-R) model. Incorporating 177 studies and 179 independent samples, with a total of 319 effect sizes, the results indicated the following: (1) Job resources and personal resources were positively related to public service motivation, while hindrance demands were negatively related to it. (2) Public service motivation had a positive relationship with overall job attitudes, job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and work engagement. It also had a positive relationship with overall job performance, in-role performance, and extra-role performance. (3) In terms of the antecedents, individualism/collectivism moderated the relationship between job resources and public service motivation, as well as the relationship between hindrance demands and public service motivation. As for the outcomes, individualism/collectivism moderated the relationship between public service motivation and both job attitudes and job performance. This study contributes to a comprehensive understanding of the antecedents and outcomes of public service motivation, offering valuable insights for future research and serving as a reference for theory development and practical application. Abstract

Nitrate is a common groundwater contaminant, primarily caused by the leaching of fertilizers. It poses a risk to human health, prompting the USEPA to set a drinking water limit of 10 mg L−1. Membrane-based bioelectrochemical systems (MBES) are effective treatment mechanisms for remediation of nitrate-rich groundwater. However, there is a knowledge gap surrounding how chloride ions as competing ions impact nitrate removal mechanisms and kinetics. In this study, nitrate-rich groundwater was fed into the cathode side of an MBES equipped with an anion exchange membrane (AEM). Nitrate ions were subsequently transported to the anolyte, where microbe-mediated reduction to N2was achieved. The system performance was evaluated under varied catholyte nitrate and chloride concentrations as well as with different applied current densities. The MBES consistently achieved nitrate removal efficiencies of at least 85% with catholyte nitrate concentrations ranging from 14 mg L−1NO3−-N to 56 mg L−1NO3−-N. Notably, the highest nitrate removal rate of 8.28 ± 0.01 mg NO3−-N L−1h−1was achieved when the catholyte influent nitrate concentration was 56 mg L−1NO3−-N. The nitrate removal behavior in the MBES can be characterized as a pseudo-first-order reaction. The presence of chloride ions, acting as model competing ions to nitrate, was found to decrease the rate of nitrate removal. Additionally, we found that diffusion is the primary driving force for nitrate removal, with electromigration slightly enhancing nitrate transport across the membrane in the MBES. When actual groundwater was used as the catholyte, 90.6 ± 12.1% nitrate was removed and the removal rate reached 5.3 ± 0.4 mg L−1h−1NO3−-N, demonstrating the high efficiency of this MBES in treating nitrate-contaminated groundwater.

Abstract

Asphalt aging is one of the key factors affecting the service life of asphalt pavement. Asphalt materials are prone to irreversible performance degradation under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. In this study, a ternary composite carbon nitride modifier (CN-Bi-Tr-DC) with excellent compatibility with asphalt binder was prepared. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and ultraviolet visible near infrared spectroscopy (UV–Vis-NIR) were used to characterize the micro morphology and light absorption rate of the modifier. The results showed that the long organic chains were successfully grafted onto the surface of the ternary composite carbon nitride modifier. In addition, the ultraviolet absorption rate of CN-Bi-Tr-DC is 65%. Dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) was used to investigate the high and low temperature performance and fatigue resistance of CN-Bi-Tr-DC modified asphalt. CMAI, G-RAI, ICO and ISO were used to evaluate the long-term aging performance of CN-Bi-Tr-DC modified asphalt. The test results demonstrated that the addition of CN-Bi-Tr-DC could improve the anti-ultraviolet aging performance of asphalt binder, and the improvement effect was most obvious when the content of CN-Bi-Tr-DC was 2–4%.

Abstract

Abstract: Electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 to formate on carbon based electrodes is known to suffer from low electrochemical reaction activity and product selectivity. Pd/three‐dimensional graphene (Pd/3D‐RGO), In/3D‐RGO and Pd‐In/3D‐RGO for the electrochemical reduction of CO2 were prepared by a mild method that combines chemical and hydrothermal. The metal/3D‐graphenes (metal/3D‐RGO) were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X‐ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Cyclic voltammetry and the ion chromatography were performed to investigate the electrochemical performance of the metal/3D‐RGO. The morphology and dispersion of metal/3D‐RGO are 3D structure with amount of interconnected pores with metal NPs loading on the fold. And the Pd0.5‐In0.5/3D‐RGO show excellent surface performance with well dispersion and smallest particle size (12.8 nm). XPS reveal that binding energy of Pd (In) NPs is shifted to negative energy, for the metal lose electrons in metal and combine with C, which is demonstrated in the HNO3 experiment. The peak potential of Pd0.5‐In0.5/3D‐RGO is −0.70 V (vs. Ag/AgCl), which is more positive than In1.0/3D‐RGO (−0.73 V) and Pd1.0/3D‐RGO (−1.2 V). The highest faradaic efficiency (85.3 %) happens in Pd0.5‐In0.5/3D‐RGO at −1.6 V vs. Ag/AgCl. In these experiments, the special structure that metal NPs combine with C and the bimetal NPs give a direction to convert CO2 to formate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
