The mapping and dynamic monitoring of large-scale cropland erosion rates are critical for agricultural planning but extremely challenging. In this study, using field investigation data collected from 20,155 land parcels in 2817 sample units in the National Soil Erosion Survey, as well as land use change data for two decades from the National Land Use/Cover Database of China (NLUD-C), we proposed a new point-to-surface approach to quantitatively assess long-term cropland erosion based on the CSLE model and non-homologous data voting. The results show that cropland in Yunnan suffers from serious problems, with an unsustainable mean soil erosion rate of 40.47 t/(ha·a) and an erosion ratio of 70.11%, which are significantly higher than those of other land types. Engineering control measures (ECMS) have a profound impact on reducing soil erosion; the soil erosion rates of cropland with and without ECMs differ more than five-fold. Over the past two decades, the cropland area in Yunnan has continued to decrease, with a net reduction of 7461.83 km2 and a ratio of −10.55%, causing a corresponding 0.32 × 108 t (12.12%) reduction in cropland soil loss. We also quantified the impact of different LUCC scenarios on cropland erosion, and extraordinarily high variability was found in soil loss in different basins and periods. Conversion from cropland to forest contributes the most to cropland erosion reduction, while conversion from grassland to cropland contributes 56.18% of the increase in soil erosion. Considering the current speed of cropland regulation, it is the sharp reduction in land area that leads to cropland erosion reduction rather than treatments. The choice between the Grain for Green Policy and Cropland Protecting Strategy in mountainous areas should be made carefully, with understanding and collaboration between different roles. Inappropriate soil management accelerates soil erosion and thus poses a serious threat to food security and biodiversity. Due to poor data availability and fragmented terrain, the landscape pattern of garden erosion in tropical Xishuangbanna is not clear. In this study, by integrating multi-source satellite imagery, field investigation and visual interpretation, we realized high-resolution mapping of gardens and soil conservation measures at the landscape scale. The Chinese Soil Loss Equation (CSLE) model was then performed to estimate the garden erosion rates and to identify critical erosion-prone areas; the landscape pattern of soil erosion was further discussed. Results showed the following: (1) For the three major plantations, teas have the largest degree of fragmentation and orchards suffer the highest soil erosion rate, while rubbers show the largest patch area, aggregation degree and soil erosion ratio. (2) The average garden erosion rate is 1595.08 t·km−2a−1, resulting in an annual soil loss of 9.73 × 106 t. Soil erosion is more susceptible to elevation and vegetation cover rather than the slope gradient. Meanwhile, irreversible erosion rates only occur in gardens with fraction vegetation coverage (FVC) lower than 30%, and they contribute 68.19% of total soil loss with the smallest land portion, indicating that new plantations are suffering serious erosion problems. (3) Garden patches with high erosion intensity grades and aggregation indexes should be recognized as priorities for centralized treatment. For elevations near 1900 m and lowlands (<950 m), the decrease in the fractal dimension index of erosion-prone areas indicates that patches are more regular and aggregated, suggesting a more optimistic conservation situation. An overview of the commonly applied evapotranspiration (ET) models using remotely sensed data is given to provide insight into the estimation of ET on a regional scale from satellite data. Generally, these models vary greatly in inputs, main assumptions and accuracy of results, etc. Besides the generally used remotely sensed multi-spectral data from visible to thermal infrared bands, most remotely sensed ET models, from simplified equations models to the more complex physically based two-source energy balance models, must rely to a certain degree on ground-based auxiliary measurements in order to derive the turbulent heat fluxes on a regional scale. We discuss the main inputs, assumptions, theories, advantages and drawbacks of each model. Moreover, approaches to the extrapolation of instantaneous ET to the daily values are also briefly presented. In the final part, both associated problems and future trends regarding these remotely sensed ET models were analyzed to objectively show the limitations and promising aspects of the estimation of regional ET based on remotely sensed data and ground-based measurements. Soluble salts in saline soil often exist in the form of salt base ions, and excessive water-soluble base ions can harm plant growth. As one of the water-soluble base ions, Na+ ion, is the main indicator of the degree of soil salinization. The pretreatment of visible, near infrared and short-wave infrared (VNIR-SWIR) spectroscopy data is the key to establishing a high-precision inversion model, and a proper pretreatment method can fully extract the effective information hidden in the hyperspectral data. Meanwhile, different degrees of human activity stress will have an impact on the ecological environment of oases. However, there are few comparative analyses of the data pretreatment effects for soil water-soluble base ions on the environment under different human interference conditions. Therefore, in this study, the difference in the degree of soil disturbance caused by human activities was used as the basis for dividing the experimental area into lightly disturbed area (Area A), moderately disturbed area (Area B) and severely disturbed zone (Area C). The Grünwald-Letnikov fractional-order derivative (FOD) was used to preprocess the VNIR-SWIR spectroscopic data measured by a FieldSpec®3Hi-Res spectrometer, which could fully extract the useful information hidden in the FOD of the VNIR-SWIR spectroscopy results and avoid the loss of information caused by the traditional integer-order derivative (1.0-order, 2.0-order) pretreatment. The spectrum pretreatment was composed of five transform spectra (R, R , 1/R, lgR, 1/lgR) and 21 FOD methods (step size is 0.1, derivative range is from 0.0- to 2.0-order). In addition, this manuscript compares and analyzes the pretreatment advantages between fractional-order and integer-order. The main results were as follows: (1) Grünwald-Letnikov FOD can reveal the nonlinear characteristics and variation laws of the field hyperspectral of saline soil, namely, due to the continuous performance of the order selection, the FOD accurately depicts the details of spectral changes during the derivation process, and improves the resolution between the peaks of the hyperspectral spectrum. (2) There is a big difference in the shape of the correlation coefficient curve between the original hyperspectral and Na+ at different FOD. The correlation coefficient curve has a clear outline in rang of the 0.0- to 0.6-order, and the change trend is gentle, which presents a certain gradual form. With the continuous increase of the order of the FOD, the change range of the correlation coefficient curve is gradually increased, and the fluctuation is greater between the 1.0-order and the 2.0-order. (3) Regardless of the transformation spectrum and different interference regions, the improvement effect of the FOD on the correlation between hyperspectral and Na+ is significantly better than that of the integer-order derivative. The commonly applied surface temperature–vegetation index (T s–VI) triangle method is used to estimate regional evapotranspiration (ET) in arid and semi-arid regions. A practical algorithm based on the T s–VI triangle method is developed to determine quantitatively the dry and wet edges of this triangle space. First, the T s–VI triangle method is reviewed. Assumptions involved in this method are highlighted, and advantages, disadvantages and applicability are discussed. Then, an experimental use of the T s–VI triangle method is developed and applied to several MODIS/TERRA datasets acquired during the Heihe Field Experiment from May 20th to August 21st, 2008. The sensible heat fluxes retrieved using MODIS data from a grassland located in the middle reach of Heihe river basin, Northwest China, are in good agreement with those measured from a Large Aperture Scintillometer (LAS). The Root Mean Square Error of this comparison is 25.07W/m2. It is shown that determination of dry and wet edges using the proposed algorithm is accurate enough at least in most cases of our study for the estimates of regional surface ET.
