8. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes growth by chemical vapour deposition: effect of precursor flowing path and catalyst size

Abstract

Carbon nanomaterials have been found to have promising performance in various applications. However, the complexity and high operation cost during the fabrication still limit the mass production. In this study, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were grown on nickel oxide (NiO) via chemical vapour deposition (CVD) with ethanol as the carbon precursor. The NiO catalyst was fabricated from a nickel nitrate – ethanol mixture. The particle size of NiO was altered through high-energy ball milling for 0, 4, and 7 h. The influence of precursor flowing path (D) and NiO catalyst size during the MWCNTs growth have been investigated. The Raman spectra showed that the crystallite size of MWCNTs (La) increased from 16.97 to 18.00 nm as the NiO milling time increased. Furthermore, NiO-catalysed MWCNTs at D = 12 cm achieved the highest carbon yield (80.54%), with an ID/IG ratio of 1.134. Also, SEM and TEM revealed that the larger size of NiO catalyst produced fewer layers of MWCNTs. These findings are significant to aid researchers and manufacturers in optimising the CVD process towards large-scale MWCNTs fabrication.

Abstract

Carbon nanomaterials (CNMs) have been a remarkable material and impacted today's technology in various fields, such as enhancing agents for host material and environment-related applications. Green synthesis of CNMs gains attention as it requires low cost and less energy during the fabrications. In addition, the starting material is either environmental-friendly or a waste carbon compound that can be obtained from the household or catering industry. In this research, CNMs such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphitic carbon layers were synthesised using barbeque grease as carbon precursor via the chemical vapour deposition technique (CVD). The oil waste was analysed with gas chromatograph-mass spectrometry (GC–MS), and it showed that the oil waste contained a high amount of hydrocarbon chain such as pentadecane and 1-nonadecene, which decomposed into simple hydrocarbon bonding during the deposition and grew CNMs on the catalyst. SEM and TEM results showed that the CNTs with a diameter range of 42 ± 17 nm (outer) and 3.5 ± 0.5 nm (inner) were synthesised using the Ni catalyst. Raman and SEM revealed that the graphitic carbon layers with a D to G peak intensity ratio (ID/IG) is 0.9898 were fabricated using Cu foil as the substrate. This research aims to discover novel and low-cost carbon precursors for the CVD system, to produce high-quality CNMs.

Abstract

Abstract Fe-doped ZnO nanoneedles (NDs) were fabricated by an Ar+ ion sputtering technique operated at room temperature. The as-grown samples show both ferromagnetic and lasing properties. The saturated magnetization moment was measured from 0.307 to 0.659 emu cm−3 at the field of 10 kOe with various Fe concentrations. Intense ultraviolet random lasing emission was observed from Zn1 − x Fe x O NDs at room temperature. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy result reveals that the doped Fe atoms occupy the Zn sites and lead to a decrease in oxygen deficiency.

Abstract

We synthesize ferromagnetic Co nanowire, and Co/Pd multisegment nanowires encapsulated inside multi-walled carbon nanotubes CNTs (MWCNTs) by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD). High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), selected area electron diffraction (SAED) patterns and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) were used to characterize the microstructures and elemental analyses of the nanowires. Quantitative magnetization measurements of Co nanowires encapsulated inside MWCNTs were experimentally established by TEM off-axis electron holography at room temperature. The MWCNTs grew up to 100-110 nm in diameter and 1.5-1.7 [micro]m in length. The typical bright-field TEM images revealed both Co nanowire and Co/Pd multisegment nanowires encapsulated inside vertically aligned MWCNTs on the same substrate. The composition of metal encapsulated inside MWCNTs were characterized by EDS. Experimental results revealed that the Co nanowire encapsulated inside MWCNT was always presented as the face-centered-cubic (fcc) Co structure. The component of magnetic induction was then measured to be 1.2 [+ or -] 0.1 T based on TEM off-axis electron holography results, which is lower than the expected saturation magnetization of fcc Co bulk of 1.7 T. The partial oxidation of the ferromagnetic metal during the process and the magnetization direction may play an important role in the determination of the quality of the remanent states. The ferromagnetic metal nanowires encapsulated inside CNTs demonstrate very high potential in providing the required magnetic properties, low dimensionality, and small volume for future nanoscale devices.
