This study presents the design of a small grid-connected power generation unit for farming systems to support the Bio-Circular-Green Economic Model (BCG) in Thailand. We focus on using the remaining agriculture waste resources to be reused according to the circular economy in the BCG model. Biogas was used as the primary fuel for an internal combustion engine, with gasoline and LPG as the immediate emergency reserves. We have integrated an engine to transmit power to a self-excited induction generator and designed a grid-connected inverter control strategy based on PQ control for the power conversion of the system by using digital signal processing. Using interface-based Internet of Things, devices can be wirelessly connected for control and logging data via a dashboard application.

This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the harmonic sources of the single-phase grid-connected voltage source converter (VSC), which leads to an alternative approach for DC bus voltage control of the VSC under grid voltage distortion with a significant switching dead time. A selective current harmonic controller with the zero-reference structure plays a vital role in rejecting the harmonic components in the grid reference current created by the bus voltage control loop and the harmonic components in the grid voltage and in the VSC caused by the switching dead time. Therefore, the bus voltage control can adopt a conventional proportional-integral regulator tuned at a fast bandwidth. The proposed control scheme implemented in the multiple unbalanced synchronous reference frames was validated with a bidirectional 2-kVA VSC under grid voltage distortion and a significant dead time. Furthermore, the proposed control scheme exhibited the transient response and grid current quality superior to the conventional bus voltage control methods with a notch filter and a low-pass filter. The proposed control scheme has inherent frequency adaption.

This study developed a grid-connected biogas power generation system for a rural community using a 3-phase 2.2 kW squirrel-cage induction machine as the self-excited induction generator. The generator was driven by a 196 cc single-cylinder spark-ignition engine fueled by biogas. We developed a back-to-back converter that consists of a 3-phase PWM rectifier as the generator-side converter and a single-phase LCL-filtered grid-connected inverter. The generator-side converter transferred the active power to the grid-side converter and supplied the reactive power control back to the generator. The notch filter-based bus voltage control on the generator side mitigated the inter-harmonics in the generator current. The injected grid current complied with the IEEE 1547 standard because of the multi-frequency unbalanced synchronous reference frame control. The proposed system was validated with biogas produced from pig manure at a pig farm in central Thailand, which found a maximum output of 1.2 kW with a thermal system efficiency of 10.7%. The proposed system was scheduled to operate at 1.2 kW for 8 h per day with a levelized cost of 0.07 US$/kWh, 42% cheaper than the retail electricity price, and a payback period of 2.76 years. The proposed system is suitable for a farm with a minimum of 34 pigs.

This paper elaborates on a development technique for the grid-connected voltage source converter (VSC). We propose a simulation technique in the MATLAB/Simulink environment that emulates the operation of the discrete-time controlled grid-connected VSC. The switched-circuit modeling approach is used for simulation of the power stage in the continuous-time domain with the physical unit scale. The discrete-time control algorithm is implemented in an interpreted MATLAB function in the per-unit scale, which synchronizes with the switching period. Such a control algorithm is easily translated into the C language for programing of the 32-bit C2000 DSP controller with the same regulators’ parameters. The proposed platform was validated with a hardware-in-the-loop real-time simulator and with a 5-kVA 3-phase LCL-filtered grid-connected VSC. The discrete-time control scheme was implemented in the synchronous reference frame control with proportional-integral with multi-resonant controllers at harmonic orders 6th and 12th for suppression of the grid voltage harmonic orders 5th, 7th, 11th, and 13th. The experimental results closely agreed with the simulation results. The experimental grid currents complied with the IEEE 1547 standard thanks to the multi-resonant controllers. The proposed platform provides a smooth transition from implementation to a near-commercial prototype with a low investment cost in simulation and rapid prototyping tools.
